Facebook Inc. on Wednesday announced that its messaging service, Messenger will be coming to Oculus Quest handsets by the end of this week. For those of you unaware, Oculus is a Facebook-owned venture that focuses on Virtual Reality (VR) and gaming, with the company being a renowned seller of its Quest lineup of VR handsets.

How Will Messenger on Quest Work?

The users who are logged in to their Quests and Quest 2 VR headsets through their personal Facebook account can use the Messenger service as is used normally, but this time whilst using the headsets. This is not limited to a headset requirement criteria, meaning if the other person does not own a VR headset, there will be no issues and the user on the other side will receive the message without any issues.

To add to this, the Messenger functions available for Quest VR users includes an option for the user to create an Oculus party on the Messenger service, in order to play games with their friends, meaning all the fun of gaming in VR, with all of your friends included.

Furthermore, users can type out a message that they wish to send to someone else who has the Messenger service activated using VR, send pre-existing or messages that are already written, for common remarks so as to save time and, even use the voice to text feature, in case one needs to send a message but is busy gaming, allowing them to type without their inputs.

This announcement came to users through a blog post by Oculus. According to Facebook, it stated that it believes in Virtual Reality’s (VR) power and the ability that it has to brings its users closer, that too during a global pandemic, when one cannot go out a lot. This is done to ensure ease of use and, the company also stated that it has built tools so as to ensure a much smoother experience, with a focus on accessibility.

Facebook further went on to state that users would still be capable of messaging their friends and gaming buddies through Oculus chats, provided that they have an account. The particular user’s previous user name is also retained.

Should one wish to opt-out of Messenger on Oculus, all they need to do is sign out of Messenger through the settings for the same. This can also be done in case one lends their VR handset, with the login process being easy, as the user would be required to select their pre-existing profile and enter the password set by them during the creation of the account.

Bharti Airtel today released its quarterly report for the period October 1, 2020, to December 31, 2020. The telecom operator posted its highest-ever consolidated quarter revenues of Rs 19,007 crore- an increase of 25.1% YoY. Over the last few quarters, we saw Bharti Airtel adding more subscribers than Reliance Jio, which also resulted in ARPU increase. At the end of Q3 FY21, Airtel’s 4G subscriber base stood at 165.6 million whereas ARPU increased to Rs 166. Reliance Jio posted an ARPU of Rs 151 at the end of the same quarter, so Airtel is still ahead in the ARPU front. Airtel ended the quarter with around 336 million overall subscriber base. Besides the wireless business, Bharti Airtel also witnessed highest-ever customers additions in both broadband and DTH sectors. The telco has added an impressive seven lakh postpaid customers during the quarter.

Bharti Airtel ARPU Boosted by Strong Postpaid Additions in Q3 FY21

Talking about the financial numbers first, Airtel’s revenues for Q3 FY21 stood at Rs 19,007 crore, up by 25.1% YoY. The mobile revenues of Bharti Airtel increased by 32.4% YoY on account of the improved realisations as well as strong customer addition. The consolidated revenues for Q3'21 at Rs 26,518 crore grew 24.2% YoY.

As for the usage, the consolidated mobile data traffic stood at 8,191 PBs in the quarter with a decent YoY growth of 52.9%. The ARPU for the quarter came in at Rs 166 compared to Rs 135 in Q3 FY20, thanks to strong customer additions. The average data usage per data customer was 16.4GB per month, while voice usage was 1,027 minutes per customer per month. Compared to Q2 FY21, the ARPU saw an increase of just Rs 4 from Rs 162 to Rs 166. But still it is a decent number and better than that of Reliance Jio.

As noted, Airtel continues to garner new 4G customers. 4G data customers on the network increased by 33.8% YoY to 165.6 million. Over the last four quarters, Airtel has added around 42 million 4G customers.

Airtel also said it continues to witness strong traction in its postpaid business, adding around 7 lakh postpaid customers this quarter. Furthermore, the telco has over 18 million customers using VoWi-Fi service. VoWi-Fi is being rolled out by Bharti Airtel across all the devices.

Airtel Broadband and DTH Segment Also Witnesses Growth

Airtel has been adding new broadband users every month, the monthly data revealed by Trai also said. At the end of Q3 FY21, Airtel Broadband has a user base of 2.79 million.

As for the Digital TV business, it witnessed a growth of 5.8% YoY on the back of strong customer additions of 4,85,000 during the quarter. Lastly, the digital services of Airtel like Airtel Thanks, Wynk and Xstream combinedly have MAUs of 190 million.

Huawei is Going to Revolutionise Foldable Phones Again, Here’s Why We Think So

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/huawei-mate-x2-might-be-revolutionary/333017/, Huawei is Going to Revolutionise Foldable Phones Again, Here’s Why We Think So

Huawei Mate X

Huawei might just revolutionise the tech industry, once again. For those of you in the dark, the Chinese company has always offered top quality products on the bleeding edge of design and innovation. From its telephoto cameras to its foldables, Huawei has time and again set the bar when it comes to both consumer tech as well as concepts.

One such product was the Huawei Mate X, the company’s first proper foldable, which was also available to consumers. As of Wednesday, the company has announced the launch of the Mate X’s successor, the Huawei Mate X2. Here’s why we think the company is going to break its own standards with the same.

Before we begin, we need to discuss the Mate X2’s predecessor, the one that started it all, the Mate X and how it was leaps and bounds ahead of what the competitors had to offer, fueling our expectations of the second version of Huawei’s foldable repeating the same leap forward.

Huawei Mate X: Light-years Ahead

The Mate X was the embodiment of what a foldable should be, at least as per Huawei. When the competition was stuck with either big, dated bezels or a design that looked far too similar to a late 90’s phone, the Mate X was light years ahead.

The main competitor, featuring a slightly similar method of folding, the Samsung Galaxy Fold (first gen) featured massive bezels to the front of the display, with the inside of the smartphone, which housed the main panel featuring a sizeable notch to the top, that too in a weird position, making it that much harder to ignore it whilst enjoying content or even during a spot of light reading. Meanwhile, the alternate style of folding displays, which resembled flip phones of the past offered better innovation, in the form of a small punch-hole on the Z Flip from Samsung and the visible yet less intrusive Motorola Razr (2020)

Z Fold 2

This is where the Mate X truly showcases why we write Light-years ahead as part of the heading of this segment. The Mate X took the alternative route when it came to the book like opening style of folding designs. Rather than open like a book, where the user was to take one side of the screen and fold it flat to provide access to the entirety of the display, the Mate X did the exact opposite.

It required the user to pull the display closer to themselves so as to access the larger footprint and, once the user was done with using the larger panel, the user would need to fold a part of the display to it’s back, much like one would do to a book. This allowed for many additions, but, this also posed a threat to the phone, since when the device would be in its compact shape, a sizeable amount of it would be exposed, making it susceptible to scruffs and scrapes, with the chances of the display being ruined higher than a typical foldable such as the Fold, which used up a tiny amount of the front when the device would be folded.

All of this being said, the method used by Huawei was quite striking, offering a foldable with a design that truly seemed like a piece of the future, with the prices being in line with this thought, with the device retailing for $2,400 dollars or 16,999 Yuan.

Why the Mate X2 Will Build on this Innovation

As of the day of writing this article, Huawei has announced that it will be unveiling the successor to the Mate X, the Mate X2 on Feb 22nd, making the waiting period quite short and, causing some buzz in relation to what it might have to offer this time. As per a leakster on Weibo, the Mate X2 will come featuring an improved design, a 5nm chipset, and a new, impressive kind of technology.

What set the Mate X apart from the crowd was its display, which at the time of it’s launch was leaps and bounds ahead in comparison to the competition. That being said, two years have passed since the Mate X was originally slated to launch and, in these two years, we have seen consumer tech taking a radical shift. Consider, for example, Samsung.

They went from a mediocre product, in the form of the original Fold to a product that has made such strides in comparison to its predecessor that the shift was almost unbelievable to some. All major aspects of the device were fixed and improved, resulting in a great successor to a mediocre first try.

Things have taken a turn this time in terms of the leaks, meaning we are not as aware of what the X2 might bring to the table as we were during the Mate X’s launch. However, as mentioned earlier, tech changes and, in this fast-paced world, one needs to innovate and make changes so as to ensure that it can sustain its business and stay in the market.

We might not see a radical shift, but, what we will see is an improvement, much like Samsung, where the product that was capable of dropping jaws but not cash has become so radically different and improved that customers are willing to spend as much as required. This change might come in the form of the hinge, a common issue when it comes to foldables in general, or in terms of the camera since Huawei’s name is held highly in terms of cameras.

All this having been said, the time for the unveil is approaching, albeit slowly and we will at the end of the day have to say what changes Huawei has made, so as to attract potential customers and helping the foldable market grow, much like Samsung has been able to achieve with its foldable lineup.

Reliance Jio Increased Focus on Infrastructure Set to Hurt Indus Towers

jio-increased-focus-infrastructure-to-hurt-indus
Motilal Oswal Financial Services on Monday said that the "increased focus on infrastructure" by Reliance Jio may "weaken" the positioning of Indus Towers. The Indian diversified firm engaged in the financial services in a report said that the "long-term overhang of business viability continues" for Indus Towers, a company that offers infrastructure services to wireless services providers. The report is on the heels of Indus Towers announcing its third-quarter financial results for the period ended December 31, 2020, with the company recording Rs 6736 crore in consolidated revenues.

Long Term Concerns Prevail for Indus Towers

Indus Towers said that the consolidated revenues recorded in its third-quarter translate to a 5% year-over-year (YoY) increase. The company is said to have a total tower base of 175,510 as of December 31, 2020, while it recorded Rs 1360 crore in net profit, translating to a 2% YoY increase.

"This was a milestone quarter for the Company with the completion of the merger between Bharti Infratel Limited and erstwhile Indus Towers," Bimal Dayal, managing director and CEO of Indus Towers said in a release on Thursday. "The two companies have come together with zero disruption with customers and other stakeholders in the last few months, a testament to the strength of the people that have been working collaboratively across teams."

Dayal also said that the "potential for passive infrastructure remains vibrant" due to the "newer technologies and developments in the telecom space."

"Operationally, we have witnessed strong network rollouts across the country and the Company has reported its highest ever net tower additions in a quarter," Dayal said in the release on Thursday.

Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio are the "largest customers" of Indus Towers with the company said to have a presence in all 22 telecom circles across India.

"The company is revalidating its growth strategy and believes future growth is hinged on small cells, smart cities, fiber, WiFi, data centers and the macro tower business," Motilal Oswal said in a report on Monday. "However, given that VIL (Vodafone Idea) is a significant contributor to the company's revenue, which is facing liquidity risk due to its huge cash obligations, long term concerns still prevail."

Vodafone Idea Struggles to Impact Indus Towers

Similarly, Dolat Capital, a firm engaged in the financial markets on Sunday said that the "strong tower additions, tenancy growth" aided Indus Towers in the third quarter of the current financial year. Crucially, the firm said that the scenarios such as the Vodafone Idea shutdown may "significantly impact the business of Indus."

"VIL's struggle with fund-raise and lack of tariff hikes increases this risk," Dolat Capital said in a report on Sunday.

Dolat Capital also highlighted that the 3416 tower additions by Indus Tower in its third quarter of the current financial year was its highest since its listing in 2012.

In its quarterly report, Indus Towers said that it has "assured future revenues and cash flows" due to multiple factors including "long term contracts" with leading wireless operators in India. The company highlighted that the contracts offer "visibility" on its future revenues. Indus Towers also highlighted Qualcomm and Reliance Jio expanding their efforts on 5G solutions as a "key industry development" in the country.

The telecom infrastructure segment in India has gained significant traction in the past year with multiple companies expanding their presence across the country. Similar to most other operators, Reliance Jio has inked deals with multiple other companies including American Tower Corporation (ATC) for infrastructure. It also has to be noted that GIC, a sovereign wealth fund alongside Brookfield Infrastructure Partners acquired a 100% stake in a tower company from Reliance Industrial Investments and Holdings Limited in late 2020. GIC along with Brookfield Infrastructure Partners in return received a portfolio of around 135,000 communication towers across India forming the infrastructure backbone of Reliance Jio's telecommunications network.

Sam Pollock, the chief executive officer of Brookfield Infrastructure Partners in the third-quarter earnings call said that the company is expecting a "significant growth" to come out of the acquisition. The Brookfield CEO also said that the company is planning to construct roughly 40,000 towers at a capital expenditure of US$1.5 billion.

"We are hopeful that as they (Reliance Jio) continue to grow their franchise across India, and today, they are, I think, by far, the largest company in the country, we see opportunities to do more things with them," Pollock said in the third-quarter earnings call in November. "So we’ll continue to look for that, but there’s nothing that we can tell you today that’s in the works."

Similarly, ATC in early November 2020, said that it was on track to build around 3500 new tower sites in India by the end of 2020. ATC is said to own and operate 74,569 tower sites in India as of September 30, 2020. Airtel, Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio are said to be major telecom operators to be engaged with ATC in India.

The companies offering the infrastructure to the wireless operators in India including GIC and Indus Towers are positive about the growth potential due to the increase in data consumption and data users across the country.

Picture this, you join a meeting only to find out that your camera is not connected, or your mic is failing. This issue is something that has become increasingly common with each and every passing day, with video calls and Zoom/Google Meet based meetings becoming the new norm.

If you are in an official meeting just to discover that some aspect of your setup is not working, it is far less than ideal. Today, Google Meet announced “Green Room”, a unique way of checking that everything works before the user joins a particular meeting or call. As per Google, the user can make use of this new functionality to confirm that the peripheral devices that are part of one’s setup and fully working and connected, so as to ensure that there will be no issues during the call.

The user can also check as to whether their internet connection is fast and check the noise being picked up by your mic whilst on a call, making sure that unwanted chatter is not picked up by your mic in the middle of a meeting.

If during the said test the Green Room picks up any discrepancies, a warning pops up to help the user understand the problem and cater to the same. The rollout for this feature has begun, with Google stating that it might take a maximum of 15 days for this new feature to appear for most users.

How Does Green Room Work?

Once the user clicks on the meeting link, instead of transferring the user directly to the call, the app will show an option to ‘Check your audio and video’ as a prompt below the meeting screen. Tapping on this option will result in the opening of a green room, wherein the user can see a preview of themselves, make changes to the mic and speaker setup and adjust the camera, making tweaks to the position and more.

The feature which has been available on Zoom for some time is finally going to be present in Google Meet, aiding in making the chances of a goof-up during a particular meeting far less likely.

Moved to Signal? Here’s How You Can Move Your Groups From WhatsApp

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/how-to-transfer-whatsapp-groups-to-signal/332757/, Moved to Signal? Here’s How You Can Move Your Groups From WhatsApp

Facebook, and its privacy-related concerns have haunted the company for years, if not all of its lifetime. From users refraining from using its app to the various allegations levied on the company. Tough times have become the norm for the social media giant. To add to all of these problems, the company’s instant messaging service, WhatsApp was under a lot of fire for a new privacy policy that shares user data with Facebook.

What resulted was a global call for privacy which saw previous Facebook executives’ application Signal shoot to a catastrophic rise. If you are like countless others (myself included) moved to the far more superior and privacy-focused Signal messaging service, you might be wondering as to how you can move your pre-existing WhatsApp groups to Signal. Here’s how.

WhatsApp and its group chats feature is quite regarded as a simple method of talking to a bunch of people. Widely used for official work, family chats and socialising, the groups are a key reason for sticking to the messaging service.

That being said, with the new privacy policy, which has been delayed to take effect in May, it is clear that these chats might be under the monitor and no one wants their personal data to be at the hands of a global company.

Do note that, transferring the messages and media files present in the group chat to Signal is not possible by any means. It is only possible to bring all your Group Members to Signal Messenger, thus creating a new group.

How to Move WhatsApp Groups to Signal

Step 1: To begin the process of moving your group to Signal from WhatsApp, you need to open the Signal app. Once you do so, you will see the ‘Compose’ button to the bottom of the application.

Step 2: Once you enter the compose section, you will see the ‘New Group‘ option, present at the top,

Step 3: After you select the New group option, you will be required to choose the contacts that you wish to be a part of the group in question. Select the previous members of your WhatsApp group and click ‘Next’. Do note that the users are required to be on Signal. Otherwise, they will not be added to the group.

Step 4: Post pressing the next option, you will see a prompt requiring you to enter the name of the Group. After selecting the name of your choice, tap on "Create" option.

Step 5: Pressing the Create button creates the group. Once this is done, the user needs to scroll down to the ‘Group Link’ button, which will give the user access to the group’s link for sharing related purposes. Click on the button.

Step 6: Group Link on Signal is, however disabled by default. In order to enable the same, one needs to turn on the toggle, which can be found nearby Manage and Share Screen options.

Step 7: Locate the share button and click on it.

Step 8: Amongst the options present once the share button is tapped,  the user needs to press the 'Copy' button to copy the group link to their smartphone’s clipboard.

Step 9: Activate your WhatsApp group and drop the copied link there.

Step 10: Once the link is sent, you need to ask users to click on the link, which would add them to the newly created group on Signal.

Poco launched its latest budget smartphone- the Poco M3 in India yesterday. During the launch event, the company detailed its product lineup and the most interesting part is the presence of Poco F series. Yes, the Poco F series is alive and will be the company’s flagship series going forward. For those unaware, the Poco F2 is one of the much-anticipated smartphones in recent years (2019 and 2020). Poco began its operations back in 2018 under Xiaomi with the Poco F1. And the company did not launch any smartphone till February 2020. It made a comeback as an independent brand with the Poco X2 exactly a year ago. But a lot Poco fans still ask this question- when is the Poco F2 launching? Well, it seems to be happening very soon.

Poco F2 Might Be on the Cards

Right now, Poco has four smartphone series- the Poco F series which will have flagship devices with top-of-the-line hardware, the Poco X series to deliver ‘Flagship Xperience’ in the mid-range segment, followed by the mid-range Poco M and budget Poco C series. The Poco M3 is the third smartphone in Poco M series after the launch of Poco M2 and Poco M2 Pro last year.

Coming to the Poco F2, we can see the phone launching in this year, finally. The handset might feature the Snapdragon 870 chipset and could retail with a lighter price tag. Xiaomi already confirmed that it is bringing flagship devices with Snapdragon 888 5G and Snapdragon 870 5G SoCs to India very soon. Since Poco is rebranding a lot of Redmi phones, we can see the Snapdragon 870-powered Redmi phone launching under Poco brand in India.

Having said that, Poco India executives in the past stated the Poco F2 would not be a rebranded phone, but there are no leaks whatsoever regarding the smartphone as of now. The Poco F1 with Snapdragon 845 SoC was launched at a starting price of Rs 20,999. If Poco F2 launches for under Rs 25,000 in India, it will script the same success story as its predecessor.

In other news, Poco just launched the budget Poco M3 in India with Snapdragon 662 SoC, 6000mAh battery, unique design and 6GB of RAM at just Rs 10,999.
