Android TV became immensely popular over the last two years with a wide range of companies opting the platform. A lot of TV manufacturers use Android TV without making any changes to the user interface. For example, the Smart TVs from Nokia, Motorola and Xiaomi (if you want to disable PatchWall UI) offer a stock version of Android TV. Google today announced a major revamp to Android TV’s home screen. Android TV now displays three new tabs on the home screen: Home, Discover and Apps. The Discover tab is the most exciting one because it gives you personalised recommendations based on the content you watch. And yes, the home screen of Android TVs is now similar to that of Google TV. Continue reading to know more about what’s new on Android TV.

Android TV Homescreen Gets a Facelift: Check What’s New

Google isn’t rolling any major software update, instead, the company announced a home screen update to the existing Android TV interface that helps you easily discover new favourites. The new Android TV home screen will present you with three tabs: Home, Discover and Apps.

The Home tab continues to be the default home screen that pops up when you turn on the Android TV device. The Home tab offers quick access to your favourite apps and channels. And as the name itself suggests, the Apps tab gives a dedicated space to access all the installed apps.

The biggest addition to Android TV’s home screen is the ‘Discover’ tab. Google first introduced the Discover tab with Google TV which is basically Android TV with a new home screen for Google devices like the Chromecast 2020. Now, the same home screen is being ported to Android TV across several countries. The Discover tab provides you with personalised recommendations based on what you watch and what might interest you, alongside displaying what’s trending on Google. The Discover tab brings movie, show and Live TV recommendations from the apps installed on your Android TV device.

Google has already started rolling out the new Android home screen interface in several countries like the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany and France. The update will roll out to more countries in the coming weeks, including India.

Indian telecom operator Bharti Airtel on Thursday stated that it will be shutting down its copper infrastructure within a year, leaving the only option to be fibre-based broadband. This move comes with an aim to offer broadband via the LCO partnership model in over 1000 cities, in contrast to the current 120 cities. Gopal Vittal, Bharti Airtel’s CEO during a meet announced that Airtel has added 1.4 million fibre home passes during the current quarter, with a scale of this rollout being at a historic high. He added that Airtel was in fact in the process of rapidly upgrading their older legacy copper assets to fibre.

He stated that he believed within a year or so, Bharti Airtel would have to shut down the company’s copper infrastructure and move to completely fibre at homes. This would be game-changing, according to Vittal.

Bharti Airtel Sees Decent Growth in Wired Broadband Sector

According to Bharti Airtel, the home business segment has also seen a growth of approximately 2.3% YoY with the highest numbers ever in terms of customer additions, with over 215,000 during the quarter amassing to a total of 2.79 million customers.

Bharti Airtel’s digital services offerings also saw robust growth, with the CEO stating that MAUs increased to over 190 million across our key digital assets thanks to XStream and Wynk.

In other analytics, Vittal said that there are over 1.2 million retailers transacting per day on the Mitra App, with online recharges continuing to contribute to around 50% of overall revenues.

To add to all this, the CEO said that Bharti Airtel’s revenues and margins contracted for the Broadband sector were primarily because of the flow-through impact of pricing decisions taken by the company in the previous quarter.

He further went on to say that the company recalibrated its offerings and launched XStream bundles with content and uncapped internet so as to add to the market penetration.

The company also added that its Enterprise Business continues to add to all of its momenta with a 9.2% YoY growth, primarily due to demand for connectivity and solutions all across both global and domestic businesses. Furthermore, it is also making decent strides and expanding in areas such as  Data centres, Cybersecurity, Customer relationship management platforms, video-conferencing and more.

airtel-broadband-connection-opposes-bifs

Early on Thursday, telecom provider, Bharti Airtel raised accusations against a local internet service provider for repeatedly damaging its network infrastructure.

This in some ways impacts the ability of the telco to provide continuous, undisturbed broadband services in areas in and around Gurugram. The FIR has been lodged with the accused having been charged for stealing Bharti Airtel’s underground cables, stated the Police.

Claims from Bharti Airtel officials state that for the entirety of the past month, their optical fibre network was being repeatedly damaged by the accused, whose name has not been disclosed as of now.

This has led to a bit of a disruption when it comes to the uninterrupted broadband service that Airtel wishes to provide to its users. Furthermore, the accused was recently caught in the act, as a CCTV picked up their image whilst they were causing the damages.

Talking about this, OP Galhotra, the group director (Security division) stated that of late they have come across several incidents of deliberate damage to Bharti Airtel’s assets in NCR.

He further went on to state that the company wishes to provide exceptional customer service and it hurtful to see these attempts to prevent Airtel from providing good broadband to its customers, that too at a time when the internet is a pivotal feature for most, if not all tasks.

He also stated that due to this disruption, many children are having to face issues that too during the exam session, when one expects their internet to function well, as most exams have moved to the online medium. Those working from home are also unable to work to their full potential. Hence, we have decided to urge the authorities, so as to take strict action against this deliberate sabotage said Galhotra.

Talking about this case, Gurgaon Police spokesperson Subash Boken stated that on the basis of the company’s complaint, a case has been registered under Section 379 (which is related to theft) of the Indian Penal Code against the unnamed accused, at the police station located in New Colony. The Cops are scanning the footage and an investigation is underway, he added.

Fiber Broadband Internet Will Change The Way You Do Online Gaming

fiber-broadband-internet-will-online-gaming

The craze for online gaming has shot up. This is because now online gaming isn't just restricted to consoles or computers/laptops, but also available in smartphones. Games such as PUBG Mobile have changed the way people look at online gaming today. More and more streamers have crept up and taken over YouTube, making a fortune by gaming online. But one thing which is of prime importance when you are looking at online gaming is speed, latency, and the stability of your internet connection. If you are wondering how you can get all of this, the answer is fiber broadband internet connection.

Broadband Internet Advantages for Online Gaming

Broadband internet is of huge advantage to people who game online. It is because of multiple reasons.

First is you get a reliable internet connection. With normal cable internet or mobile data, most gamers’ only issue is an unreliable internet connection. People face a lot of connection drops because of which their gaming or streaming experience is impacted negatively. But all that can be solved with the help of a fiber broadband internet connection. You get not only a stable internet experience but also a super-fast connection.

This brings us to our second point. With fiber broadband, you can get speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Of course, you don't need all that speed to game smoothly, but this is just an example of what you can get with a fiber connection. There are broadband plans available with 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps, and more speeds which you can utilise to game online.

Next point, which is the third one is that you will get less latency on the network. Less latency is very important for keeping things in real-time. The higher the latency, the more distortion you will see. Games such as PUBG Mobile and other online multiplayer games rely a lot on less latency. Without that, your gaming experience will be ruined.

But just understand that simply getting a fiber broadband internet connection is not enough. You need to optimise it in case you are facing any issues with online gaming. Check if the speed is enough for you in case there are multiple devices connected to the same network. Then ensure that the hardware or the modem you are using is of the right type for facilitating high-speed. Lastly, make sure that you keep updating the firmware of your router from time to time so that everything is fine with your connection.

BSNL Rs 18 Voucher Now Offers 1GB Daily Data With Unlimited Calling

bsnl-rs-18-voucher-offers-1gb-daily-data-unlimited-calling

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has revised the offering of its Rs 18 voucher recently. It is one of the most popular short-term vouchers offered by the state-run telco. The Rs 18 voucher is now said to be offering 1GB daily fair usage policy (FUP) data instead of the 1.8GB/day data it used to offer earlier. As per a report from KeralaTelecom, BSNL is also offering SMS benefits with the Rs 18 voucher but has reduced the data offering significantly for the users — more details on the story ahead.

BSNL Rs 18 Voucher Revised Offerings

To really understand how the benefits of the Rs 18 voucher from BSNL have changed, let's take a look at what the voucher used to offer earlier. Users got unlimited voice calling, unlimited video calling, and 1.8GB/day data for two days. If the user consumed all the FUP data before the expiry of the voucher, the speed would drop to 80 Kbps.

After the revision, the unlimited video calling and voice calling is there, but the data has been reduced to 1GB/day, and users get an added benefit of 100 SMS/day. The validity of the voucher will remain the same at 2 days. The speed would again drop to 80 Kbps after exhausting the FUP data.

The new offering with the voucher will come into effect from February 5, 2021, and will be applicable in all the telecom circles.

BSNL Rs 18 Voucher: How to Activate?

There are multiple ways in which you can recharge the Rs 18 voucher of BSNL. The first is to do it online. It is very easy and convenient since you can do that practically from anywhere by going to the website of the telco or through any of the recharge applications such as Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay, and more.

The second is to go to a retail shop and pay in cash for the same. The third and the last way to recharge the Rs 18 voucher is to send SMS 'STV COMBO18' to 123 or use the USSD code '*444*18#'.

We are not really sure if a lot of users would appreciate this change. Since the culture of sending SMSes has dropped to an all-time low. We assume that most of the users would have wanted the extra 800MB/day data instead of the 100 SMS/day with the Rs 18 voucher.

What do you think about this voucher revision from BSNL? Do you prefer the current benefits or the new ones that will come into effect tomorrow?

Apple earlier this week rolled out macOS 11.2 to its users, with the update bringing fixes and updates to Bluetooth reliability so as to ensure reduced disconnections as well as fixing issues in relation to the display and external displays. ProRAW and iCloud based fixes were also part of this update.

Another issue in relation to System Preferences not unlocking when entering administration password in certain cases has been fixed with macOS 11.2. The Globe key not displaying the Emoji and Symbols pane when pressed has also been tackled.

Within a day of the launch of macOS 11.2, the Cupertino based tech company released the beta version of Big Sur 11.3, giving the developers a look into what the users can expect from this update.

The rollout will take some time to occur, so don’t get too excited just yet. That being said, macOS 11.3 does bring some changes that will help out users in both minor and major aspects of the interface.

What’s New in macOS 11.3

As per a report that was released by MacRumours, macOS Big Sur 11.3 beta brings with it newer and far more advanced customisations for Safari, including various ways of rearranging different sections that are part of the Start Page. To add to this, the new update fixes some apps running on M1 chips so as to make the applications better optimised for the new silicon.

Additional updates to the interface consist of a new preference pane that can allow the users to set keyboard shortcuts for touch commands on iPad. Furthermore, iPadOS apps will launch on larger windows, with a caveat of as to whether or not your Mac display allows for this.

The Reminders app is also receiving a new version, with developers being capable of sorting reminders based on multiple factors such as due date, priority and date of creation. As of now, developers can also print out their reminders.

Apple Music is also getting a shortcut for a Made for You playlist and live or future events will be showcased in the For You Tab. Apple has also said that the Apple News app will get some new updates, with the company having redesigned the Apple News+ tab, which now offers a For You section and a Browse tab.

Vodafone Idea Upgrading Network to Offer 4G-Only Services in Kerala

Posted: 03 Feb 2021 09:23 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/vodafone-idea-4g-only-services-kerala/333221/, Vodafone Idea Upgrading Network to Offer 4G-Only Services in Kerala

Vodafone Idea which is currently in the process of phasing out the 3G network across the country says it is upgrading the network in Kerala circle. Vi is informing this news to its customers in Kerala via an SMS, but what’s more interesting is the mentioning of ‘4G-only’ services. For the unaware, Vi has already refarmed 3G spectrum for 4G in four circles- Delhi & NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Gujarat. However, in these cities, the telco just phased out 3G services and retained 2G services. That seems to be not the case with Kerala circle as the telco might be completely moving to 4G. But again, we are not sure of the exact development, so there are chances that Vi is just conducting 3G spectrum refarm for 4G in Kerala similar to other circles.

Vi Likely to Become 4G-Only Operator in Kerala

Reliance Jio is the first LTE-only operator in India. Bharti Airtel phased out its 3G network across the country, and it was recently followed by Vodafone Idea as well. As mentioned above, Vi officially confirmed that the 3G spectrum refarming already completed in four circles- Delhi & NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru and Gujarat.

In the latest development, Vi is sending the following SMS to its customers in Kerala. “Hello! We're upgrading our network to 4G-only to provide seamless connectivity and high-speed data experience. We request you to kindly select 4G data preferred network type in the network settings of your mobile handset to continue using our services. Dial 199 if you need any further assistance.” This news was first posted by our reader Araving Unni.

As you can see, the SMS clearly says Vi will soon become an LTE-only operator in Kerala. The telco currently has 2G, 3G and 4G services. After its merger with Idea Cellular in 2017, Vodafone’s network got a major boost in Kerala. In early 2019, Vi deployed band 40 spectrum in Kerala which resulted in faster speeds compared to the band 3 LTE the telco used in the past.

As part of its 3G spectrum refarming process, Vodafone Idea is deploying additional 5 MHz of 2100 Mhz band spectrum to increase the total 4G bandwidth in select circles. If Vi becomes 4G-only operator in Kerala, customers might see a boost in 4G speeds and also improved services.

Parler CEO John Matze Terminated by the Company’s Board

Popular social media platform Parler, which is favoured by the United States conservatives on Wednesday dismissed its CEO John Matze, stated the ex-CEO. This comes at a time when the platform is largely offline owing to an attack on the US Capitol and the supposed use of the platform in orchestrating the same. John Matze confirmed this move of termination via text to Reuters. He stated that on January 29, 2021, the Parler Board, which is controlled by Rebekah Mercer had decided to immediately terminate his position as the Chief Executive Officer of Parler.

He further went on to state that he did not participate in this decision and the meeting in relation to it, as is stated in a memo he sent to Parler staff, as was originally reported by Fox News.

Parler was founded back in 2018 with the driving force for users being the free-speech-driven space that the application has to offer. The application attracted mostly US conservatives, who wished to stay away from other forms of social media and did not wish to adhere to rules in relation to content imposed by the likes of Facebook Inc and Twitter.

This decision comes a few days after Amazon stopped hosting the company’s service as part of Amazon Web Services, owing to the violent messages and content present on the application.

Parler investor, as well as right-wing commentator Dan Bongino, claimed that after being removed from Amazon Web Services, Parler could have been back in action if the company were to agree to, as he puts it, ridiculous Apple edicts to become a heavy moderation site, towards the right of Twitter.

He then went on to state that Parler did not wish to feature any kind of wrong messages, but, it was and, still is a free speech site and the board wishes to keep it so for the foreseeable future.

Talking about Matze and his lay-off, he said that the company’s vision and the CEO’s vision were quite different and it was not the CEO’s vision that the platform wished to follow. Furthermore, talking about Matze’s sudden revelation, he said that the company was handling the issue like gentlemen, but John decided to go public.

Microsoft Edge 90 Brings With It Redefined Download Interface, Bug Fixes

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/microsoft-edge-version-90-fixes/333215/, Microsoft Edge 90 Brings With It Redefined Download Interface, Bug Fixes

Microsoft Edge

Microsoft’s Edge Browser has been the talk of the town for quite some time. Users who wish to use a less RAM intensive browser that also does not drain the battery as if the laptop was running intensive games (we are looking at you Chrome) Edge has been the go-to recommendation. Having said that, in comparison to Chrome, Edge surely has some shortcomings. These have usually been heard to by the company and resolved swiftly with regular updates, with this instance fixing a particular issue that has bugged users for quite some time.

What’s new in Microsoft Edge Version 90

The major headlining change for version 90 comes in the form of a new download interface for the browser. With users having updated to V90, they will see a new section that will be visible at the right of the browser, towards the to half, indicating all the active downloads being conducted at the point of time of the user checking the downloads pane. This new fix reduces the screen space that was earlier captured by the downloads option and is much more easily removable, meaning once you are done, a click of a button will get rid of the additional download data that the user does not require.

Edge Downloads tab

The button that is part of the downloads section features a progress ring, which is helpful in quite some ways, primary allowing the user to keep a check on the overall downloads being conducted and their progress that too from the toolbar, without having to open a separate tab. This will also allow the user to switch to the full-screen view, in case they wish to do the same.

Do note, this update as of now is part of certain channels, namely Canary and Dev channels, as was stated by a Microsoft Exec in a community post.

Explaining the reason for the new downloads interface, the writer of the post explained that users had criticised the current method of showing the user the progress of their download since at times it was tough to notice any new downloads within the tray located below the window. Add to this the con wherein if the user closed the tray to make additional room for content, they could no longer see the progress.

Edge V90 Changelog

  • Fixed an issue wherein many EdgeUpdates could be seen running at the same time in Windows Task Manager
  • Fixed a crash whilst copying URLs from the address bar.
  • Fixed a tab opening crash
  • Fixed a crash when using the new Favorites/History group
  • Fixed a crash while making use of speech recognition.
  • Fixed a crash when the user is using search engine shortcuts to search for something from the address bar.
  • Fixed an issue where opening Edge via certain shortcuts causes manual updates to fail.

BSNL Rs 199 Postpaid Plan Revised, Takes on Jio With Truly Unlimited Calling Benefit

Posted: 03 Feb 2021 05:33 PM PST

This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bsnl-rs199-postpaid-plan-unlimited-calling/333202/, BSNL Rs 199 Postpaid Plan Revised, Takes on Jio With Truly Unlimited Calling Benefit

BSNL has revised the Rs 199 postpaid plan once again to match the similarly priced plan of Reliance Jio. Revised in December 2020, BSNL used to offer unlimited on-net calling and just 300 off-net minutes for an entire month. After the latest revision, the Rs 199 BSNL postpaid plan will offer truly unlimited voice calling to any network within India including Mumbai and Delhi in MTNL network. Other benefits of the Rs 199 plan remain the same- 100 SMSes per day and 25GB of data with rollover up to 75GB. Reliance Jio also revised its Rs 199 postpaid plan to offer unlimited voice calling to all networks across the country. So the revision from BSNL comes at a good time and it might help the telco adding more subscribers in the coming months. The revised postpaid plan is already effective from February 1, 2021.

BSNL Rs 199 Postpaid Plan Now Offers Unlimited Calling Without Any Limit

To recall, BSNL started offering unlimited voice calling with all the plans in January 2021. However, the Rs 199 postpaid plan was left off for some reason. BSNL’s postpaid plans priced at Rs 399 and above received the revision immediately. BSNL used to limit the voice calls to 250 minutes per day with all the plans above Rs 399. The Rs 199 plan, however, offered unlimited on-net calling and 300 off-net minutes, along with the 250 minutes daily limit.

As per the latest update, the Rs 199 postpaid plan will now offer unlimited on-net and off-net calling benefit. After the removal of Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC), Reliance Jio is also offering unlimited voice calling to any network with the Rs 199 postpaid plan.

With this new change, BSNL beats Reliance Jio comfortably. Both the plans come with unlimited calling, 25GB data and 100 SMSes per day. While BSNL also has data rollover facility in place, there’s nothing as such on the Jio Rs 199 postpaid plan. But the Mukesh Ambani-led telco provides complimentary access to its content apps like JioTV and JioCinema, whereas BSNL users do not get any such benefits.

Customers opting for the Rs 199 postpaid plans from telecom operators generally lookout for basic benefits, especially the unlimited calling. And it is good to see BSNL making the customer-centric changes that will help it gain more subscribers.
