| WhatsApp UPI Transaction Volume Dips in January; PhonePe Extends Lead at the Top Posted: 08 Feb 2021 07:33 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/whatsapp-upi-transaction-volume-january/334459/, WhatsApp UPI Transaction Volume Dips in January; PhonePe Extends Lead at the Top
Facebook-owned WhatsApp continues to witness poor response for its payments service in India. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) released UPI data for the month of January 2021. PhonePe continues to lead the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) payments market in India with an overall transaction volume of 968.72 million and Rs 1,91,973.77 crore transaction value. Google Pay is second on the list, followed by Paytm Payments Bank App, Axis Bank Apps and Amazon Pay. The NPCI data revealed shows WhatsApp’s January 2021 UPI transaction volume witnessed a massive dip, but the overall transaction value of WhatsApp Pay increased. Overall, UPI registered 2302.73 million transactions in the month accounting for Rs 4,31,181.89 crore transaction value. UPI Transactions in India Reach All-Time High in January 2021In contrast, the overall UPI transactions registered in December 2020 were 2,234.16 million and it saw an increase to 2302.73 million during the first month of 2021. The transaction value also saw an increase to Rs 4,31,181.89 crore from Rs 4,16,176.21 crore. PhonePe is leading the chart with 968.72 million transaction volume and Rs 1,91,973.77 crore overall transaction value. On the other hand, Google Pay is on a steady ship with 853.53 overall transaction volume and Rs 1,77,791.47 crore transaction value. In December, WhatsApp clocked 0.81 million transactions accounting for Rs 29.72 crore transaction value. This is down to 0.56 million transaction value in January and Rs 36.44 crore overall transaction value. PhonePe managed to beat Google Pay for the second consecutive month- both in terms of overall transaction value & volume. Google Pay users are facing a lot of issues while transferring money, whereas PhonePe is as swift as possible. WhatsApp would be disappointed looking at its payments services in India. That said, the instant messaging platform is late to the party, thanks to pending approvals from NPCI. WhatsApp is now rolling out full-fledged payments service to its users across the country. Since users are inclined towards Google Pay and PhonePe in India, the growth for WhatsApp Pay seems unlikely. |

Chinese smartphone giant Xiaomi on Monday released its latest flagship, the Mi 11 in Europe. Having previously been launched in China, the device marked the debut for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 chipset. The device also ditched the charger in the box, which made headlines, that being said, the company is offering an option to get the charger in the box if one wishes for a charger, free of charge. The Mi 11 includes some stand out features such as a 108MP sensor, 120Hz display and up to 55W GaN-based fast charging. Here are the specifications for the same. Xiaomi Mi 11: Specifications and FeaturesThe Mi 11 was part of the headlines mainly due to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 SoC, which is paired with LPDDR5 based RAM and UFS 3.1 storage. This makes the device a powerhouse, capable of handling everything that a user wishes to throw at the device. In terms of the display, the smartphone sports a 6.81-inch WQHD+ panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz, paired with a 480Hz touch sampling rate. The display also has a peak brightness of 1500 nits, which indicates that outdoor usage will not be impacted due to any lack of brightness.
As for the camera side of things, the device features a triple camera setup towards the rear, consisting of a 108MP primary sensor, paired with a 13MP ultra-wide sensor and a third 5MP macro sensor. For selfies, the device relies on a 20MP sensor. To top everything off, the device comes with a 4600mAh battery with support for 55W wired fast charging and up to 50W wireless charging. There is a 55W GaN charger inside the box (Europe). As for the audio, the device consists of dual stereo speakers, which indicate towards good, if not great content consumption capabilities. Dual headphone support is also present on the Mi 11. Xiaomi Mi 11: Pricing and Availability
The Mi 11 is priced at EUR 749 (approx. Rs 65,700) for the base 8GB+128GB storage model. Xiaomi is also offering 2-years of free warranty on the phone and 1-year screen replacement, adding to the customer’s satisfaction and reducing their worry in case of any damage. The device comes in three color variants, namely Cloud White, Midnight Green and Horizon Blue. In contrast, the china pricing of the Mi 11 was a bit lower, with the base variant (8+128GB) being priced at CNY 3,999 (approx. Rs. 45,300) and the 8GB+256GB priced at CNY 4,299 (approx. Rs 48,700). The topmost variant, featuring 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage is priced at CNY 4,699 (approx. Rs 53,200). An India launch is expected soon, but no hints in relation to the same have surfaced, so we cannot predict a date for the Mi 11’s debut in the Indian market. |

| Bharti Airtel Stays Ahead of Reliance Jio in Postpaid Market Posted: 08 Feb 2021 12:29 AM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/bharti-airtel-ahead-reliance-jio-postpaid-market/334391/, Bharti Airtel Stays Ahead of Reliance Jio in Postpaid Market
Bharti Airtel is miles ahead of Reliance Jio when it comes to the postpaid market. It is fair to say that Reliance Jio is quite new to the segment, but its offerings aren't much different from Airtel's and were expected to uproot the existing postpaid user base of the telco. However, postpaid customers are generally considered more loyal to their operators, and it has been proved once again. Airtel added a record number of postpaid users in the previous two-quarters leaving Reliance Jio far behind. This is a good sign for Airtel since its goal of acquiring 'premium' users is going strong — more details on the story ahead. Reliance Jio Postpaid Plans Made Negligible Impact on the MarketAccording to a report from ET Telecom, Airtel added 7,00,000 users in the December quarter of 2020. In the last six months, the telco added a total of 14,00,000 users which is also near a decade high meaning Reliance Jio's postpaid offerings had a negligible impact on the market. Reliance Jio launched its postpaid plans in September 2020, so it has been around six months only. But the plans introduced by Jio were on the cheaper side with more data and benefits. Yet it is Airtel which is ahead in the postpaid segment adding the most number of users in the previous two quarters. One of the reasons behind Airtel being ahead of Jio in the postpaid market is its 'superior market execution'. The telco's primary postpaid customers are enterprises that don't focus a lot on the plans’ pricing, instead focus on the quality of services they get. In the December quarter, Airtel's mobile revenues were Rs 14,779 crore, which indicated a sequential growth of 6.8%. The telco reported its postpaid user base to be around 16 million users in the previous quarter. It further reported a higher average data usage per month by the users to 16.4GB and voice calling to 1,027 minutes. |
| 5G in India to be Delayed Because of ‘Poor Planning’ from the Government: Report Posted: 07 Feb 2021 11:31 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/5g-in-india-delayed-because-the-government/334370/, 5G in India to be Delayed Because of 'Poor Planning' from the Government: Report
According to a report by the Parliamentary Panel on IT, the next-generation connectivity technology, '5G' will not arrive India any time soon. The report has blamed the 'poor planning and execution' by the government to introduce 5G in India. The estimated Rs 54,000 crore, which is expected to be the government’s revenue from the telecom sector in FY22 doesn't include any proceeds from 5G. The government hasn't even mapped out a timeline for the 5G spectrum auctions in the country — more details on the story ahead. Sufficient Preparatory Work Not Done for Launch of 5GThe Parliamentary Panel on IT was led by the Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The panel has said that the government hasn’t done sufficient preparatory work to launch and implement 5G in the country. However, some government officials close to the matter told Hindustan Times that 5G trials are expected to start soon. Firstly, 5G will be rolled out in the metro cities to test and then be expanded around the country in a phased manner. The report suggests that 5G will not arrive in India until the end of 2021 or early 2022. Even when it does arrive, the deployment of the technology will be partial. Mukesh Ambani led Reliance Jio has claimed that it will be able to bring 5G to India by the second half of 2021. Bharti Airtel is also expected to launch its 5G services in the country around the same period. For the unaware, Airtel recently concluded a live 5G test through the airwaves in the 1800 MHz band in Hyderabad. The test results have encouraged the telco to roll-out 5G as soon as the government allows sufficient infrastructure for the technology to be developed in India. Both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are waiting for the government’s nod to start providing their 5G services. |
| Hyundai, Kia Shares Tumble as the Companies Reveal They Were Never in Talks With Apple Posted: 07 Feb 2021 10:42 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/hyundai-kia-not-in-talks-with-apple/334347/, Hyundai, Kia Shares Tumble as the Companies Reveal They Were Never in Talks With Apple
In an instance of positive hype resulting in a major let down, the two major automotive companies, namely Hyundai and Kia announced on Monday that they were not in talks with Apple for the company’s Smart car, sending their shares tumbling. As part of separate regulatory filings by the two automotive brands, the companies announced that they were not having talks with Apple in relation to developing autonomous vehicles. What Did the Reports Suggest?
This comes days after reports suggested that Apple was in talks to invest KRW 4 trillion ($3.6 billion) into Kia, with a contract likely being signed later in February, most likely on February 17 after initial reports suggested talks between the companies back in January. The report further stated that Kia would handle the Apple Car project with Apple aiming to set up an exclusive production unit in Georgia, within Kia’s facility. The report also mentioned that Apple had set a target of 2024 to debut its electric vehicle, with an aim to produce 100,000 units of its electric car per year. For those of you wondering, in early January, shares of both companies surged after Hyundai had stated that Apple and Hyundai were in between discussing some topics, with the conversation being at an early stage. Overall share surges were reported at 20% for Hyundai and 40% for its subsidiary Kia. What are the Impacts of this Announcement?
With the announcement being made, the shares of both Kia and Hyundai slumped to 14% and 6% respectively. Both of these companies announced that they were not in talks with Apple on the same day, releasing statements around the same time. However, Hyundai did say that it was getting requests for cooperation on joint development of autonomous electric vehicles from various companies, without naming any of these corporations. What played a key part in this slump was all the hype surrounding this situation, especially when one considers that Apple had never acknowledged talks with either automaker, with no comments being made in relation to these announcements. All of this was due to a Reuters report back in December, which stated that Apple was moving towards the future with autonomous car tech aimed at providing a passenger vehicle with its own battery tech as early as 2024. |
| Official Intel 11th Gen Chipset Benchmarks are Intended to Ridicule Apple M1 Posted: 07 Feb 2021 10:00 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/11th-gen-benchmarks-to-ridicule-m1/334321/, Official Intel 11th Gen Chipset Benchmarks are Intended to Ridicule Apple M1
Apple, the Cupertino based tech company, dumped Intel in 2020 in favour of its own M1 chip, which is based on the company’s A14 Bionic chipset, that makes use of 5nm processing technology. This came as a huge blow to the company since a lot of their revenue came from Apple and its Mac series of PCs and Laptops. That being said, it seems Intel was ready with its answer to the M1 chip, since, the chipmaker recently shared benchmarks, which, as per PC World is an attempt to showcase that Intel’s 11th Gen Core processors are better than Apple’s M1 chip. What Do the Benchmarks Show? The report describes these benchmarks as ‘carefully crafted’ due to several reasons. According to Intel, exporting a PowerPoint presentation in the PDF format is 2.3x faster on a Windows laptop running the 11th-Gen Core i7 processor and 16GB RAM compared to the process that takes more time in a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple M1 chip and 16GB of RAM. Intel also states that the Mac is not ideal for gaming, due to the lack of support for some major games such as Gear Tactics and Hitman 2. Additionally, the company states that Topaz Lab's AI-based photo enlargement software gigapixel AI performs 6 times faster with the Core i7 processor as compared to M1 MacBook Pro.
As per PC World, this result is understandable since the apps are designed to take advantage of the hardware acceleration present in Intel processors. Gaming was however not as clear as the regular AI test. When it comes to the battery side of things, both the M1 MacBook Air and the Acer Swift 5 running on the Intel i7 Processor (11th Gen) achieved a similar 10-hour battery life when streaming Netflix with a few additional tabs. Do note, both laptops were at 250 nits of display brightness, with MacBook Air running Safari and the Acer running Chrome. It is also worth mentioning that Apple is rumoured to be launching two new laptops, which are the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, with a new Apple Silicon chip later this year, which might just beat out Intel again. |
| Samsung Galaxy F62 With Exynos 9825 SoC Launching in India on February 16 Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:10 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/samsung-galaxy-f62-february-16/334336/, Samsung Galaxy F62 With Exynos 9825 SoC Launching in India on February 16
Samsung Galaxy F62 is set to debut in India on February 16, the company confirmed via e-commerce website Flipkart. The Galaxy F62 will be powered by the Exynos 9825 chipset which is Samsung’s 2019 flagship chipset used on the likes of Galaxy Note 10+ and Galaxy Note 10. The Exynos 9825 SoC was a mid-cycle refresh to the Exynos 9820 that was used on Galaxy S10 series. The Galaxy F62 will not be a 5G device, so the Xiaomi Mi 10i and Realme X7 will still have an upper hand in the sub-Rs 25,000 segment. The Galaxy F62 is said to be priced under Rs 25,000, and the company is teasing it have to the best benchmark scores in the segment. While Samsung did not confirm specifications apart from the processor, leaks floating on the web revealed the key specs of the device. Samsung Galaxy F62: Everything You Need to KnowTipster Ishan Agarwal revealed the key specifications of Galaxy F62. The phone is said to come with SM-E625F model number. The USP will be Exynos 9825 chipset, but sadly, it will not have 5G support which might come as a disappointment for many. It is said to feature a 7000mAh battery, 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display, and Android 11-based OneUI 3.1 out of the box. As for the cameras, Samsung is rumoured to include a 64MP primary shooter on the back along with a 32MP selfie snapper. The phone could launch in a 6GB+128GB variant in two colours- Green and Blue. And the phone will be exclusive to e-commerce giant Flipkart. We are not sure about the pricing, but IANS earlier tipped it to be less than Rs 25,000. We are expecting a price of Rs 24,999 for the base variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, but again, Samsung might get even more aggressive to take on the likes of Mi 10i and Realme X7 smartphones. The official launch is set for February 16, during which the complete spec-sheet and pricing will be announced. |
| WhatsApp Is Finally Bringing Mute Video Option to Users Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:23 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/whatsapp-beta-mute-video-option/334315/, WhatsApp Is Finally Bringing Mute Video Option to Users
Popular messaging service WhatsApp, which has been the primary choice when it comes to messaging in India features a lot of add ons and tools that make it easy to use. Some of these include the ability to hide the status of users, making both audio and video calls, sending documents via the app and more. That being said, for the user who wished to mute a video before sending it to others, there was no option that could help the users out. This issue will cease to exist, or so it seems, according to WABetaInfo. This comes a long time since the last leaks in relation to this feature. What is this all about? What function will it play? Read on to find out. What is this All About? As per WABetainfo, WhatsApp is finally ready to roll out a new “mute vide0” feature, for its beta testers as of now. This will be available to users near the edit video option, that is present whilst sending a video to other users. This is part of a rollout on a beta build that WhatsApp is rolling out to select beta testers. For this, users are recommended to update to the latest WhatsApp update, which is the 2.21.3.13 beta update. The site also states that while users are recommended to update to the beta update, this might also appear to beta testers running on a previous version of WhatsApp.
This comes a long time since the leaks first appeared in relation to this feature, which was also indicated by WABetainfo. Back in November of 2020, with the leak showcasing a screenshot where users were seeing a speaker icon towards the left side, near the duration and file size detail of the videos. To mute the video, users would be required to tap on the speaker icon, before sharing the video to somebody else. At the time of this report, the feature was not even in development, far from being ready for beta testing. However, it seems the feature is quite close to a proper rollout. This feature will be quite useful to most if not all, so as to send some videos that might contain shrill sounds, helping save other users from sharp, loud sounds. |
| Apple Is Going to Be TSMC’s Biggest Customer Posted: 07 Feb 2021 07:30 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/apple-to-be-tsmc-biggest-customer/334305/, Apple Is Going to Be TSMC’s Biggest Customer
As per a report that was released by Counterpoint, it is being predicted that Apple will be TSMC’s biggest customer in terms of 5nm chips, owing to the high usage of the company’s A14 chips on its latest iPhones and MacBooks followed by the launch of the A15 Bionic later this year. All this combined will result in Apple accounting for 53% of the 5nm chip production. Do note, this increased usage of 5nm chips is caused due to the increased number of devices from Apple that make use of the A14 Bionic chipset. These devices include the iPhone 12 series, the iPad Air, the MacBook Air, Pro and Mac mini as of now. These numbers are expected to go up, with a few other devices in the future featuring the A14 chip or, a chip loosely based on the same, as was the case with the A12 and A12Z Bionic chip. What About the Competition?
With Apple dominating the 5nm stock, second in line would be Qualcomm, or so the report indicates. It is expected that the company will account for 24% of TSMC’s 5nm stock. Apple is also expected to make use of the X60 5G modem from Qualcomm, further increasing the demand that might be generated from Qualcomm. Overall, both TSMC and Samsung, as per predictions are reported to have 90% of their 5nm equipment booked. Out of this, 80% might be used in smartphones. The 2021 foundry industries revenue is also expected to be up by 23% in comparison to last year. However, the research firm that had predicted this states that the growth might be around 12%, resulting in a revenue of $92 Billion. It has also been expected that TSMC will grow from 13 to 16%, further helping in chip sales and aiding to the industry’s growth. TSMC’s prime rival meanwhile, which is Samsung Foundry is also expected to make 20% growth in 2021, in terms of revenue. This will entirely be based on the 5nm Exynos 2100 chip, which is found on the S21 Series in India and makes use of the same design that is used on the Snapdragon 888 chip. |

Over-the-top (OTT) platforms have gained a lot of popularity in the pandemic. New platforms have emerged offering exclusive shows and originals to their viewers keeping them hooked with unique content. Just last year, Disney+ Hotstar came to India and has become one of the biggest platforms in the country. Now, more and more players are set to come to India this year which will further enhance the existing competition between the platforms. Let's take a look at some of the platforms which we think will rule India in 2021. NetflixThere is no doubt that Netflix will keep going strong in India regardless of the number of new OTT platforms that may emerge. Even though Netflix is a lot more expensive than other platforms, it has the highest demand because of the library of content it has. Further, it has purchased rights for delivering some of the most famous television shows such as 'Friends' and more. Amazon Prime VideoPackaged in the offering of Amazon Prime membership, the Amazon Prime Video has gained a lot of popularity over the years. Especially in India, shows such as 'Mirzapur', 'Four More Shots', and more have captured users’ attention. Amazon Prime Video also offers a ton of regional content for Indians in addition to famous TV shows such as 'Shark Tank' and more. Disney+ HotstarIntroduced just last year, the platform already has millions of Indians hooked to it. Bagging the rights of streaming the Indian Premier League (IPL) and partnering with various telecom operators has helped the OTT platform a lot. It offers access to television shows such as 'How I Met Your Mother', 'Westworld' and more which have gained a lot of traction from the Indian users. Other OTT Players That Might Gain More Popularity this YearApple TV+, HBO Max, Discovery+, and BookMyShow Stream are four platforms which we think stand a chance to gain a lot of popularity this year. Apple TV+ offers only original content, and it is slowly building its library of shows and movies. It also costs very less (Rs 99 per month). HBO Max has a ton of content, including TV shows and movies that people love. Since it has a huge library, users get a lot of options to choose from, but the only thing is that the platform isn't available in India yet. It might arrive later this year, but there is no confirmation of the same. Talking about Discovery+, it offers a lot of educational entertaining content which is its unique selling point (USP), and one which can prove to be quite useful for it. The platform is acquiring a lot of local content this year and that might just make the bigger difference for its future in India. BookMyShow Stream was announced recently. It is a transaction video-on-demand (VOD) platform where the users can buy or rent the movie they want to watch. More than 600 titles are on the platform with movies such as Tenet and more Hollywood and Bollywood blockbusters. It will also offer users access to 'premieres' on Fridays, which will help them gain the theatre experience right at their home. Lastly, there are other platforms such as Hulu, Voot, ALT Balaji, and SonyLIV which are expected to gain more users as well. Which platform do you subscribe to and you think is worth it? | Reliance Jio Talk Time Plans: Check Out Prices, Validity and International Roaming Support Posted: 06 Feb 2021 05:41 PM PST This post first appeared on TelecomTalk Read more at: https://telecomtalk.info/reliance-jio-talk-time-plans-2021/334077/, Reliance Jio Talk Time Plans: Check Out Prices, Validity and International Roaming Support
Talk time prepaid plans are not much of use in 2021, especially on Reliance Jio’s network. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea customers can at least make use of these talk time plans on top of the minimum recharge plans which start at Rs 49 (Rs 39 in case of Vi). Reliance Jio customers will have to recharge unlimited combo plans to make voice calls. They won’t be able to make voice calls just by having the talk time or Jio Top Up plans. As of this writing, the Mukesh Ambani-owned telco is providing six talk time plans starting at just Rs 10 and going all the way up to Rs 1,000. Earlier, Jio offered a Rs 5,000 talk time plan as well, but it is no longer available for recharge. Here are the six top-up plans available on Reliance Jio’s network with talk time benefit. Reliance Jio Rs 10 to Rs 1,000 Top-Up Vouchers DetailedThe only difference between the six top-up vouchers available on Jio’s network is the talk time benefit. As the price increases, the talk time benefit also increases. Starting with Rs 10 top-up voucher, it offers a user Rs 7.47 talk time benefit. The Rs 20, Rs 50 and Rs 100 top-up vouchers come with Rs 14,95, Rs 39.37 and Rs 81.75 talk time benefit. Lastly, the Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 top-up vouchers ship with Rs Rs 420.73 and Rs 844.46 talk time. The validity of these top-up vouchers is unlimited. As mentioned above, these talk time plans from Reliance Jio can be used for international services. For example, if you have any international roaming pack activated on your mobile number, then these talk time plans can be used to make outgoing voice calls to other countries. The major letdown with the top-up vouchers is they can’t be used individually. The talk time plans from Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are useful for the minimum recharge plan users. The Rs 49 minimum recharge plan offers Rs 38.52 talk time benefit; If a customer exhausts the talk time, they can recharge the talk time plans available at a starting price of Rs 10 to make outgoing calls. And the talk time benefit will be deducted on per second/per minute basis. |
