Spectrum Auction 2021 Day 1: 65% of 800 MHz Band Sold, Rs 77,146 Crore Revenue and More

Posted: 01 Mar 2021 07:05 AM PST

The day one of Spectrum Auction 2021 is now over and the DoT has released the bids it received so far today. Unlike what was expected, the government received winning bids worth Rs 77,146 crore from the three telecom operators who participated in the bidding today. The government expected bids of around Rs 45,000 crore, but telcos have exceeded the expectations in this auction. Airwaves sold in the 800 MHz band contribute to 50% of the generated revenues, said Union communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad. 65% of the spectrum was sold in the 800 MHz band and 89% of 2300 MHz was sold on day one of spectrum auction. Similar to Spectrum Auction 2016, the 700 MHz band does not see any takers and the DoT says a legal approach will be taken on Trai, citing exorbitant pricing. The bidding will continue tomorrow, aka March 2.

Day 1 of Spectrum Auction 2021 Highlights

The 2021 Spectrum Auction is very different compared to the previous auctions. In 2016, we had seven bidders, but now, there are only three bidders- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. For the unaware, the government is auctioning spectrum across seven bands- 700 MHz, 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz. The spectrum purchased by the bidders in this auction will be valid for 20 years.

Delving into the details, it is confirmed that the 800 MHz band is the show-stealer. The government has managed to sell 65% of the spectrum in the 800 MHz band that contributed to 50% of the generated revenue. Telcos in India are using spectrum in the 800 MHz band for 4G services.

Bidders acquired 89% of the 2300 MHz spectrum, which accounts for around 17% of the raised revenue. The government also sold 38% of the spectrum in the 900 MHz band, 41% in the 1800 MHz band and 9% in the 2100 MHz band. There are no takers for the 700 MHz band.

Keeping the 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands aside, 60% of the spectrum put on auction has been sold. The Union Minister also said it would take legal action on Trai regarding the prices of the 700 MHz band.

As we reported earlier, the three bidders will be given the option to pay 50% of the amount upfront for bids placed in 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2300 MHz and 2500 MHz bands. The remaining amount can be paid via over the next two years. Since the spectrum in 700 MHz, 800 MHz and 900 MHz bands is costly, an upfront amount of just 25% for every successful bid.

The auction will continue tomorrow, where we might see Reliance Jio bidding for part of the spectrum in the 700 MHz band.

BSNL Might be Able to Rollout 4G in Six Months, Here is How

bsnl-to-rollout-4g-in-six-months

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) might be able to roll out 4G in the next six months. The telco is looking for the up-gradation of more than 49,300 sites across India, including the ones covered by ZTE, so that it can roll out 4G faster. The state-run-telco has expressed its inabilities of meeting the requirements for the rollout of a new 4G tender and has said that if it were to go after fulfilling the requirements, it would take another two years for it to roll out 4G. According to a Financial Express report, looking at the current conditions, BSNL has proposed new bidding options, including the floating of new tender with commercial options, which will allow for open bidding to take place.

Conditions That Are Hard for BSNL to Fulfil For Rolling Out 4G in India

Last year, BSNL had to drop its 4G tender due to the concerns raised by the Telecom Equipment & Services Export Promotion Council (Tepc). The second tender, which seeks to fulfil all the requirements, is very hard for the telco to achieve in a short-frame of time, and BSNL has communicated the same to both the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Prime Minister's Office (PMO).

BSNL needs to rollout 4G in India as quickly as possible. The telco has suggested that new tender should come with commercial options so that open bidding can be possible. Big tech companies such as Tech Mahindra, Mavenir, HFCL, and more have suggested that it will take at least 6 to 8 months for the proof of concept (PoC) process to complete.

In case it is successfully completed within the expected time frame, BSNL can rollout 4G within 10 months; otherwise, it will get substantially delayed. BSNL has said that PoC should be limited to only a few circles or one zone, and the up-gradation of 49,300+ sites should be allowed, including the ones by ZTE, so that 4G can be rolled out in six months.

PUBG a Violent Game Says Javadekar, Might Never Come Back to India

Posted: 01 Mar 2021 01:34 AM PST

pubg-violent-game-says-javadekar

PUBG Mobile was one of the many Chinese applications banned last year when the security tensions between India and China grew. In a recent statement, Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister of India, said that PUBG is a violent game, and it creates a complex in the minds of youngsters. Millions of Indian are waiting for PUBG Mobile relaunch in India, and this statement won't instil confidence amongst them. PUBG Corporation has been trying to get hold of the Indian government and requesting it to launch the Indian version of the game, but even that request has been denied.

The solution is to Create Homegrown Apps for Children: Javadekar

Javadekar said that the solution is to create homegrown applications for children. He said that a 'Centre of Excellence' will be set up by the government in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B), which will come into effect as the new session starts in 2021.

Javadekar stressed that Indian children need to grow up playing games that show them their ethos, culture, and tradition. For that, homegrown games and applications are a must. He further said that 'criticising' the game won't help India’s children; instead, India should look to develop games and applications at home.

It would be wrong to assume that PUBG Mobile will never come back to India based on the statement from Javadekar. But one thing is for sure; the Indian government will not make it easy for the game to make a comeback, especially when Indian apps such as FAU-G are on the market.

At the same time, 'PUBG: New State' is already up for pre-registrations for the PC version and is said to be in the developing stages for the mobile version as well. The game is being developed by Krafton and PUBG Corporation, meaning no China involvement; thus, it might arrive in India.

samsung-galaxy-a32-india-launch

Samsung is going to launch the Galaxy A32 in India on March 5, 2021. Further, the device will also go on sale the very same day. A microsite on Samsung India's website shows that the device will be launched on the said date and also reveals some of the key specifications of the device. It is expected that only the 4G variant of the device will be making its way to India at the moment. This is because Samsung hasn't explicitly noted 5G anywhere on the microsite. The 5G variant of the device is already available in Russia and the UK.

Samsung Galaxy A32 Specifications (Expected)

As mentioned above, Samsung has revealed some of the key specifications of the device on its microsite. The Galaxy A32 will arrive with a quad-camera setup at the rear, where the primary sensor will be a 64MP lens.

Then the device will feature a Super AMOLED display with support for 90Hz refresh rate. Further, the Galaxy A32 will pack a 5,000mAh battery. It can be seen in two colours on the microsite of the company – violet and blue.

Even though complete specifications of the device are not mentioned on the website, we can assume the specs by looking at the device launched for the international markets. The Galaxy A32 might come with a 6.4-inch full HD+ display.

It is expected to be powered by an octa-core chipset which might be the MediaTek Helio G80. The device might come with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB expandable internal storage with the help of a microSD card (up to 1TB).

The 5,000mAh battery might get the support of 15W fast-charging, and the device could come in four different colours – Awesome Blue, Awesome Violet, Awesome Black, and Awesome White. Further, the device might feature an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Jio’s New Bundled Offering Will Have Limited Impact on Other Telcos: Goldman Sachs

Posted: 28 Feb 2021 11:42 PM PST

jio-bundled-offering-limited-impact

Reliance Jio recently announced a new JioPhone 2021 bundle offer for users. There are three plans which the users can choose from. The first plan comes for Rs 1,999 for two years, and it provides the user with 2GB of data per month and unlimited voice calling. The second plan for Rs 1,499 comes for 1-year, and the existing users can get the bundled offer for a special price of Rs 749/year. While these may seem like attractive prices, it won't really impact the growth of other telcos much, believes Goldman Sachs.

Users Might Continue Using 2G and Feature Phones Instead of Shifting to Jio's 4G

The JioPhone 2021 offer from Reliance Jio is expected to have a limited impact on the growth of other telcos such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi). Analysts believe that Vi is more prone to losing subscribers itself than because of Jio's new bundled offer.

Another reason the analysts cited was that feature phone users can still stay with the 2G network of Airtel and Vi. People who don't want to shift to Jio's '4G only network' won't have any interest in the offer launched by Jio.

Additionally, even if there are any problems created by the offer for the growth of Airtel, the telco would offset it by gaining new users at the cost of Vi's subscribers. It is worth noting that the original JioPhone offer is slated to end this year, and the new JioPhone 2021 offer is aimed to retain customers.

Jio is expected to retain most of the JioPhone users, if not all. Further, the new JioPhone 2021 offer indicates that the telco's worries about the supply chain for the feature phone are over or subsided for the time being.

However, in a note, Edelweiss Securities said that Jio's feature phone offerings would dilute its average revenue per user (ARPU). On the other hand, J M Financial has said that Jio's ARPU is slated to grow steadily because of the increased demand for data and smartphones.

DIVO Movies will also offer users exclusive premiers of Tamil movies on the Airtel Xstream's platform.

DIVO Movies Available on Airtel Xstream Platform, But For a Small Fee

DIVO Movies is now available for the Airtel Xstream platform users, but users will have to pay a small monthly fee to access its content. The pricing of the standalone subscription for DIVO Movies is Rs 30 per month.

This strategic partnership stands to benefit DIVO Movies a lot since it will be able to penetrate a larger user base in the country, leveraging Airtel's strong network infrastructure. It will also benefit Airtel since it will allow the telco to open a new monetisation window.

Sudipta Banerjee, Chief Product & Technology Officer, Wynk Music & Airtel Xstream App, said that Airtel is very excited about this partnership since now all of its 335 million+ subscribers will be able to stream through amazing and popular Tamil movies on-demand.

It is worth noting that DIVO is one of the largest movie rights and licenses holder in South India.

Spectrum Auction 2021: Reliance Jio Expected to Be the Aggressive Player

Posted: 28 Feb 2021 09:01 PM PST

The much-awaited Telecom Spectrum Auction 2021 will be taking place later today. The top three telcos- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are confirmed to place their bids. On the one hand, we have Reliance Jio which is expected to go aggressive in the spectrum auction because the telco’s liberalised spectrum in the 850 MHz frequency band is set to expire this year across several circles. The liberalised spectrum of Reliance Communications (RCom) owned by Reliance Jio is also set to expire in various circles. This essentially means the Mukesh Ambani-led telco will be going all out in the spectrum auction so that it can continue providing services without any disruption. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are also confirmed to be the bidders in this auction, however, they will be largely acquiring airwaves to strengthen the network.

What to Expect from Reliance Jio at Spectrum Auction 2021

India did not have spectrum auctions for more than four years now and the Spectrum Auction 2021 is really crucial, especially for Reliance Jio. While all the telcos will be looking to renew their spectrum that will start expiring from July 2021, Reliance Jio is in dire need of spectrum to deliver uninterrupted services.

Jio’s liberalised spectrum is set to expire across Andhra Pradesh, Delhi, Karnataka, Kolkata, Kerala, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP East, UP West and West Bengal, from July 2021. Besides, RCom’s liberalised spectrum, which is being used by Reliance Jio on a spectrum sharing basis, is also expiring across Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi, Mumbai, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Odisha and UP East.

Jio is the country’s largest telecom operator with over 410 million subscribers. In this auction, we will see Jio bidding for the 800 MHz band to continue providing 4G services. However, the telco might also bid for spectrum in 900 MHz and 700 MHz bands. DoT recently said that Jio is a pre-qualified bidder for Spectrum Auction 2021 with an EMD (earnest money deposit) of Rs 10,000 crore.

What to Expect from Bharti Airtel at Spectrum Auction 2021

Moving on, we have Bharti Airtel which may not take active participation in the Spectrum Auction 2021. The country’ second-largest telecom operator has enough spectrum as a backup in the 1800 MHz band to provide services to 2G customers. Airtel might bid for sub-GHz spectrum in the 2300 MHz band, which will be crucial for the telco’s 5G rollout plans. Airtel may also bid for some airwaves in 900 MHz & 2100 MHz.

What to Expect from Vodafone Idea at Spectrum Auction 2021

Lastly, we have the financially struggling telco Vodafone Idea which is possibly the strong telco amongst the private telcos when it comes to spectrum backup. Similar to Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea may also give the 1800 MHz band a miss in this spectrum auction thanks to the spectrum backup it is having right now. Furthermore, Vi is currently refarming the 3G spectrum for 4G across all the circles which could also lead to the telco giving this auction a miss.

But, Vodafone Idea will likely bid for additional capacity in the 2300 MHz band in key cities to boost the network coverage. Vi might aim at acquiring some sub-GHz spectrum in key circles like Kerala, UP West, Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
