| Netflix Mobile+ Plan of Rs 299 to Offer Users Content in ‘HD’ Quality Posted: 10 Mar 2021 05:24 AM PST
Netflix has launched yet another mobile plan for users in India. It is called the 'Mobile+' plan, and it will come at the cost of Rs 299 per month. This plan will offer users all the Netflix content in HD quality. For the unaware, the basic Netflix Mobile plan in India comes for Rs 199 per month but offers content in SD quality only. Thus, for users who want a cheap Netflix subscription but with HD quality content, they can opt the 'Mobile+' plan of the streaming giant. Netflix Mobile+ Plan DetailsThe Netflix Mobile+ plan will also come with the restriction of 'one screen' at a time like the standard mobile plan. It is worth noting that the standard Netflix plan costs Rs 649 per month and offers HD content allowing 2 screens viewing at the same time.
One major difference apart from the video quality between the Mobile and Mobile+ plan of Netflix is the devices the content can be played in. For Netflix standard Mobile Plan that costs Rs 199 per month, the content can either be played on a smartphone or a tablet. However, with the Mobile+ plan, users can stream content on computers/laptops as well. Thus, users will be able to get the HD content on bigger screens and that too for a nominal cost of Rs 299 per month. 4K+HDR content quality is only available for users purchasing the premium plan of Netflix that costs Rs 799 per month. A thing worth noting here is that this is just a 'testing' period of the plan for Netflix. If the plan sees a great response, the streaming giant will roll it out for the long-term. However, if the response is not so great, the plan will be scrapped. Netflix has been expanding its user base in India rapidly by adding more local content to its platform and going with creative moves such as 'Netflix StreamFest'. |
| Higher Spectrum Price Could Lead to Higher ARPU: Analyst Posted: 10 Mar 2021 04:00 AM PST
Higher Spectrum Price to Result in Higher ARPUThe Indian government in a release in early March said that Reliance Jio, the largest wireless operator in India acquired 488.35 MHz of spectrum worth Rs 57,122.65 crores. Further, Bharti Airtel, the second largest wireless operator in India acquired 355.45 MHz of spectrum worth Rs 18,698.75 crores. Vodafone Idea, the third largest wireless operator in India acquired 11.80 MHz of spectrum worth Rs 1993.40 crores. "This price increase in per unit of spectrum sold is expected to result in higher Average Revenue per User (ARPUs) in the coming months as achieving higher ARPUs remain focus point of the telecom industry," Care Ratings said in its report on Tuesday. The firm said that the industry ARPU has already increased 22.5% to Rs 93 between January, 2020 to September, 2020. In the previous three quarters between April, 2019 to December, 2019, Care Ratings said that the industry ARPU was at Rs 76. However, the credit rating agency highlighted that the current industry ARPUs are lower than the Rs 124 levels in the 2016 financial year "when Reliance Jio had not entered the telecom market." The Indian telecom operators including Airtel have consistently maintained that the "industry needs" the ARPU to increase to Rs 200. "ARPUs have to get to Rs. 200 and finally, ultimately to Rs. 300, which is something that, as an industry, we deserve in order to generate a reasonably good return on capital employed, this is what would be required for the business model to succeed," Gopal Vittal, chief executive officer, India and South Asia, Bharti Airtel, said in the third quarter earnings call in February, 2021. In its third quarter financial results, Airtel said that its mobile ARPU hit Rs 162 as compared to Rs 135 that the operator registered in the previous year financial quarter. Vodafone Idea in its third quarter financial results said that its ARPU "improved" to Rs 121 as compared to Rs 119 in its previous quarter. Reliance Industries in its third quarter results said that its Jio Platforms recorded ARPU of Rs 151 as compared to Rs 145 in the previous quarter. "Having said that, as you know, pricing is a competitive issue and it is based on competitive dynamics," Vittal said. "So, I cannot comment on when pricing will go up. I do believe that we will be ready to take up tariffs if and when any player actually moves tariffs given that we are already at a premium." Spectrum Auctions Indicate Industry Preparations of 5G Services LaunchCare Ratings also said that the spectrum auctions provided indications that the industry is chalking out plans for the deployment of 5G services. "The telcos have mentioned that the acquired spectrum will support them to roll out 5G services in future when required which indicates the industry's preparations to build network capacity for deployment of 5G services," Care Ratings said in its report. The industry players such as Jio said that the spectrum acquired by the operators in March "can be utilised for transition to 5G services at the appropriate time." "With our increased spectrum footprint, we are ready to further expand the digital footprint in India as well as get ourselves ready for the imminent 5G rollout," Mukesh Ambani, Reliance Industries chairman said in a release in early March. Meanwhile, Motilal Oswal Financial Services in its report in early March said that the 2300 MHz band "generated substantial interest" as the band enables the operators to "prepare for a seamless switch to 5G." However, it has to be noted that the 700 MHz and 2500 MHz bands remained unsold in the recently concluded spectrum auction in March. "The 700 MHz band which is considered one of the premium bands below 1GHz band for deploying 5G networks also had remained unsold in [the] October 2016 auction due to its higher price," Care Ratings said in its report. |

| Vodafone Idea Spent Less at Auctions Because it has Plenty Spectrum: Report Posted: 10 Mar 2021 03:00 AM PST
In the recently concluded 4G spectrum auctions, Vodafone Idea (Vi) bought 11.8 MHz of spectrum in five circles for Rs 1,993.4 crores. At the same time, Jio spent more than Rs 50,000 crores, and Airtel spent close to Rs 20,000 crores for acquiring fresh spectrum. According to an ET report, the reason behind Vi spending such less money at the auctions was already owning plenty of spectrum. The Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vi, Jagbir Singh, said that the telco already has 'enough spectrum'; thus, it didn't buy much at the auctions. Vi Looking to Make Capex Investments for Improving 4G NetworkSingh said that Vi is looking to improve its 4G network in the country and is planning its capex investments according to that. He said that the telco already covered more than a billion people through its 4G network and is looking to switch off 3G completely to utilise the spectrum efficiently for providing 4G services. Further, the telco is also motivating its 2G customers to shift to 4G. Singh said that Vi already has the capacity to serve 270 million customers through its 4G network, and the number will only increase as the telco switches off 3G in a phased manner in the country. He said that the 2G spectrum is also being refarmed to 4G. It is worth noting that Vi has the largest sub-GHz spectrum holdings in several telecom circles of India. Further, Singh said that Vi is not looking to take out investments/equipment from the Category C circles. The telco would invest proportionately in all the telecom circles. Adding to this, the telco will increase its investments in the top 16 circles (part 1, 2, and 3). Even the analysts didn't think that Vi would spend so less in the auctions. But since the telco already has plenty of spectrum and a declining user base, it will be able to manage the network just fine. |

| SMS Regulations Suspended for One Week: Trai Posted: 10 Mar 2021 01:00 AM PST
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has suspended the SMS regulations on Tuesday, which came into effect just a day before. Because of the SMS regulations, a ton of SMSes carrying important data such as Railways ticket bookings, OTPs, Aadhar authentication, and more weren't being delivered to the customers. To ensure that the end customer doesn't have to pay for the relaxed behaviour of businesses on implementing the new SMS template, the telecom regulator has relaxed the rules for seven days (one week). Time for Businesses to Gear Up and Implement the New SMS System FastAccording to an ET Telecom report, the telcos have switched off the new SMS filtration system on Tuesday. This will give the ignorant businesses time to implement the new SMS system fast so that no more SMSes they send gets blocked in the future. Some of the industry executives said that large businesses with advanced IT mechanisms are catching with the new system, but for the small businesses, it is getting hard since the SMS content is very dynamic in nature. For the unaware, Trai had issued the regulations on unsolicited commercial communication in 2018, but the rules came into effect on Monday only. According to the regulation, the content of every SMS must be verified by the telcos before it is delivered to the customers. For doing the same, the telcos have deployed a blockchain solution that will check the header, sender ID, and content of every SMS that originates from a verified/registered source. The SMSes which come from unregistered IDs will be directly blocked. This system is put into place to ensure that SMS frauds in India can be contained and reduced as quickly as possible. All the entities that haven't registered and implemented the new SMS system will have to do so in the seven day period to ensure that their SMSes does not get blocked by the operators. |

| Broadband: Latency and Bandwidth Are Not the Same Thing Posted: 09 Mar 2021 11:05 PM PST
What is Bandwidth?'Bandwidth' isn't just a fancy word for internet speed like many assume it to be. Bandwidth means the amount of data that can be transferred from point A to point B at a given time. Thus, higher bandwidth would mean that more amount of data can be transferred at a point in time. When it comes to an internet connection, bandwidth is measured in terms of how much data can be downloaded to your device at a given time. One thing to note here is that the actual bandwidth your get will always be lesser than the total bandwidth of the network because of congestion and other factors. What is Latency?'Latency' means the time taken by the signal for going to the destination and travelling back. The computer sends a 'ping' to a remote server and measures the amount of time it takes for the ping to come back with the information. Thus lower latency will mean that the time taken by the ping is lesser, so the results will appear faster. Higher latency would mean that the results on the screen take longer to come. Whenever you put a request on social media websites or Google, a signal is sent from your computer to the server, which then comes back to the computer with the required information. The quicker this happens, the faster the information will load for you. Applications of Bandwidth and Latency in Different TasksFor doing the most basic of things today, such as gaming, video calling, streaming, and browsing, high bandwidth and low latency on the network is necessary. Online multiplayer games such as Call of Duty: Mobile, PUBG Mobile, and more require less bandwidth since most of the assets of the games are already downloaded. But low latency is essential to enable real-time gaming. If there is high latency on the network, the actions on the game will not take place in real-time, meaning you will be behind other players and will have to face 'lags' or 'delays'. While in the case of streaming, 'ping' or 'latency' matters less, but bandwidth is essential since the data is being downloaded to be played on your device. If you are facing buffering issues, it is because of the low bandwidth on your network. In the case of video calling, both high bandwidth and low latency is essential. This is because during video calling, high bandwidth is required to maintain the quality of the call (picture and sound quality), and low latency is required to keep the sound and audio synchronised; otherwise, there can be huge delays resulting in a horrible chat experience. With browsing, low bandwidth would result in higher load times for even the most light-weight pages, and low latency would delay the opening of the page initially even though it might load it super-fast later. These are a few of the areas where low latency and high bandwidth are important. Hopefully, you guys understood the difference between latency and bandwidth and why they are important for your internet experience. |
| Vi Likely to Enhance Network Capacity in 6 Circles With the Help of Chinese Gear Makers Posted: 09 Mar 2021 09:04 PM PST
Vodafone Idea (Vi) is reportedly in talks with Chinese gear makers to expand network capacity in six telecom circles. Amid the tensions between India and China at the border, the government is pushing for local telecom gear which means a check on Chinese vendors like Huawei and ZTE. That said, a PTI report now claims that Vi is going ahead with the ‘already awarded contracts’ to the Chinese gear makers. The report also added that the telco is in the ‘advanced stages’ of processing orders for the network expansion. Both the Chinese gear makers- Huawei and ZTE worked with Vodafone Idea in the past. The circle details are unavailable as of this reporting. Vodafone Idea to Award Contracts to Chinese VendorsVodafone Idea is looking to increase network capacity in six circles where it is witnessing increased demand. The PTI report further added that Vi is looking to go ahead with the contracts which were already awarded to the Chinese vendors. Furthermore, Vodafone Idea Chief Technology Officer Jagbir Singh reportedly confirmed that the company would not process any new orders to the Chinese gear makers, however, it will go ahead with the contracts that were already given in the past. The telco will opt for equipment from Huawei and ZTE in circles where the network is currently being served by them, Jagbir said in the past. Later this month, the Indian government is expected to come up with new telecom licence norms. The amended telecom licence norms might restrict the telecom gear installation from China and other ‘non-friendly’ countries. That said, the norms may not require telecom operators to remove the existing network infrastructure and it will also allow them to continue working with Chinese companies for the already served areas. Moreover, the government will provide a list of trusted companies and products which the Indian telcos can make use of to deploy in the coming years. Huawei and ZTE will be hugely disappointed with such restrictions from the Indian government. However, other vendors like Ericsson and Nokia will be looking forward to meeting the increased demand from Indian telcos. At the same time, the government is pushing for local manufacturing of telecom gear. |
