Google Pixel 5a Receives BIS Certification, Might Launch Soon in India

Google Pixel 5a is expected to soon be available for the Indian market. It has recently received certification from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). There is a Google device listed with a codename – 'G Logo GROM2' on the certification platform. Many smartphone lovers and enthusiasts believe that it is none other than the Google Pixel 5a. It is worth noting that not much official information or even leaks about the device have made rounds online, which is quite strange for a device that might launch soon.

Google Looking to Capture Market Share With Pixel 5a

A report from ET Telecom said that Google is looking to increase its market share with the Pixel 5a. The company is not looking to compete in the ultra-premium range in India. Google said that its focus is on the Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000 market segment.

Thus we can expect the pricing of Google Pixel 5a in the same range as well. The Google Pixel 4a was launched for an introductory price of Rs 29,999 (6GB RAM + 128GB internal storage). It is expected to feature a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 series 4G chipset.

Google said that it won't be launching the 5G variants of the Pixel 5 series in India because the market hasn't developed yet. It would only mean higher hardware costs without any utility. The Google Pixel 5a might also be manufactured in India.

The search engine giant, just like Apple and Samsung, is looking to set up manufacturing facilities in India. It will be interesting to see how the market strategy of competing in the mid-premium range pans out for Google. Companies such as OnePlus, Samsung, and Apple already have a strong foothold in the segment.

It is worth noting that multiple reports have suggested that the Google Pixel 5a will launch on June 11, 2021, which is still three months away. Thus, more information about the device should surface soon.

Jio Ready for Mass 5G Deployment Says Mathew Oommen

Posted: 15 Mar 2021 01:31 AM PDT

jio-ready-for-mass-5g

India should focus on creating Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) by innovating to fulfil global manufacturing needs. Mathew Oommen, President of Reliance Jio, said that through the support of the telecom industry, India should look to develop IPR locally and provide it for manufacturing purposes throughout the world. Oommen said that a suite of products, technologies, and platforms should be developed to facilitate ease in manufacturing not only for India but also for other parts of the world. Further, he said that Jio is all ready to deploy 5G in India.

Focus on Manufacturing for Global Market, Not Just India

According to an ET Telecom report, Oommen said that Jio is ready for the mass deployment of 5G in India. Mukesh Ambani had earlier said that Jio would introduce live 5G networks in India by the second half of 2021. However, the recent developments in the market suggest that it would be next to impossible for Jio to do that.

Oommen further said that Jio is very proud to provide basic connectivity options to people throughout India for a very low-cost. He said that earlier, 1GB of data used to cost around Rs 250, whereas after Jio came to the market, the same costs less than Rs 10.

According to him, the telecom industry is responsible for providing citizens and businesses with affordable and equitable digital platforms so that the true potential of India can come out.

The Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme introduced by the centre will certainly motivate a lot of tech firms to come and set up shop in India. Major tech companies such as Apple, Samsung, and more have already started investing more and more into the Indian market for local production both for exporting and selling within the country.

Thus according to Oommen, this is high time that India focuses on developing IPR and starts providing affordable technological solutions globally for facilitating ease in manufacturing. If India is able to do this, it will soon become a global tech leader.

Micromax In 1 Launching in India on March 19

Micromax In 1 Teaser on Twitter

Micromax is all set to launch another smartphone in India on March 19. Dubbed as the Micromax In 1, the phone’s official teaser confirms the presence of a centred punch-hole that houses the selfie camera. As we inch closer to the launch, Micromax will reveal more details about the smartphone. As of this writing, XDA Developers writer Tushar Mehta revealed the specifications of the Micromax In 1 on Twitter. The phone will reportedly feature a Full HD+ screen, MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, 48MP triple camera setup and a 5000mAh battery. Going by these specs, we can expect the price of the smartphone to be around Rs 9,999 or Rs 8,999, taking on the recently launched Realme Narzo 30A.

Micromax In 1: Expected Specifications and Features

As the smartphone’s name suggests, the Micromax In 1 will sit between the In Note 1 and the In 1b smartphones. The leaked specs of the smartphone are also similar to the Micromax In Note 1. The leaked spec-sheet of the In 1 hint at a 6.67-inch Full HD+ with punch hole cutout. The handset will have MediaTek Helio G80 chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage. The phone may come in another variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Other specs of the smartphone include a 48MP primary lens on the back paired with a couple of 2MP sensors. The device is said to lack a ultra-wide-angle shooter on the rear side. Towards the front, the In 1 is rumoured to have an 8MP selfie snapper. The handset might have a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner similar to the Micromax In 1b, and it will be backed by a 5000mAh battery with 18W fast charging.

As you can see, the rumoured specs of the In 1 are similar to those of the already launched In Note 1, except for a few changes like the triple camera setup on the back and the Helio G80 chipset underneath.

The expected price of the Micromax In 1 is around Rs 9,999 or Rs 8,999. The recently launched Realme Narzo 30A with Helio G85, 6000mAh battery and a dual-camera setup is priced at Rs 8,999. If Micromax launches the In 1 at Rs 8,999, it would be a great smartphone to purchase in that price segment, considering the stock Android experience it offers.

Vodafone Idea Reportedly Pushes Back Tariff Hike to Q1 FY22

Posted: 14 Mar 2021 08:58 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Tariff Hike Postponement

Vodafone Idea, which was heavily rumoured to hike tariff prices in recent months, has now reportedly postponed the plan. A new ET Telecom report says the financially struggling telecom operator has pushed back its plan of raising tariff prices to Q1 FY22. Vi might now hike the prices of prepaid and postpaid plans by the end of the April-June quarter. Initially, Vi was planning to increase tariff prices by the end of this quarter (Q4 FY21), but the launch of new JioPhone offers by Reliance Jio means the telco is left with no other option other than the postponement of tariff hike. If Vodafone Idea goes ahead with tariff hike, there are high chances of its 2G subscribers migrating to Reliance Jio.

Tariff Hike May Not Happen in India Anytime Soon

With Vodafone Idea’s decision to push back the tariff hike, the current prices are here to stay, at least for another 3-4 months which is a good sign for the subscribers. The last tariff hike happened in December 2019 and it made brought the much-required relief to the telecom sector financially. The COVID-19 pandemic also helped the telcos to settle down financially and increase the ARPU with various plans focussed on data-savvy users.

As of December 31, 2020, Vodafone Idea has the lowest Average Revenue per User (ARPU) among the private telcos. Airtel is leading the chart with a very decent Rs 166 ARPU, while Jio is second on the list with Rs 151 ARPU.

The ET Telecom report says Vodafone Idea’s top management decided to go against another tariff hike because of the new offers from Reliance Jio. New JioPhone users can avail a yearly plan at Rs 1,499 and a two-year plan at Rs 1,999. It is an affordable proportion and a lot of customers will be inclined towards it.

Vi still has a lot of 2G subscribers under its belt. If it goes ahead with the tariff hike now, there are heavy chances of its 2G subscribers migrating to JioPhone. Reliance Jio is also offering a unique tariff plan to its existing JioPhone users as they can avail a Rs 799 plan that offers benefits for one year.

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio already stated they would not hike tariff prices in the industry first, so it is all on the shoulders of Vodafone Idea. If Vi increases the prices, then Airtel and Jio will join the same train.
