But the company has today rolled out a version for the Android TV as well. This means that Android TV users can now download and install this app from the Google Play Store. It is worth noting that users owning a Jio Set-Top Box could also run the application on their TVs, but now it has been rolled out for Android TVs globally. The app was launched in 2018 and in a short span of 25 months, it has seen tremendous traction. JioPages allows users to browse in two different modes – private browsing and default browsing. The private browsing mode is nothing but incognito mode and the default browsing mode comes with default search settings. Note that it has a dedicated videos section. More than 10,000 videos are on the platform of the application divided into 20+ categories. If users want, they can also consume regional content on the go with JioPages. | BSNL Might Roll Out Hybrid 4G in Next 10 Months Posted: 16 Mar 2021 06:00 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has come up with two different plans to fast-track the process for rolling out 4G in the country. The earlier 4G tenders from BSNL had to be scrapped because the government didn't want the telco to get its network equipment/gear from foreign vendors. But an early rollout of 4G is necessary to ensure the telco’s survival amidst competition with private players that hold a majority of the market. Two Plans Suggested by BSNLAccording to a Financial Express report, BSNL has suggested two plans to the government. It is worth noting that both plans include splitting the tender into two parts. Let's take a look at the first plan. In the first plan, as mentioned above, BSNL has recommended splitting the tender into two parts. The first part will include 50,000 sites for the Indian vendors, and the other part will include 50,000 sites for foreign vendors such as Nokia, Samsung, and Ericsson. The telco has said that Indian vendors can also join the second part of the plan if they can successfully complete the trials of their technology in time. In its second plan, BSNL has again recommended splitting the tender into two parts. The second plan will focus on the five zones of India. Out of the five zones, BSNL has recommended reserving one of the zones for Indian vendors and the other four for foreign vendors. The telco has asked the government to favour the first plan since it will allow the Indian vendors to capture a sizeable amount of the business. So far, none of the Indian vendors has provided the telco with proven technology for a network core. BSNL has communicated the same to the government. If the local firms can complete all the trials on time, BSNL could launch its 4G network in the next 10 months. But if the trials take more time than expected, the rollout time might extend. |

| Doora, a 5G Powered Droid is Delivering Food to People Posted: 16 Mar 2021 03:16 AM PDT
A delivery droid named 'Doora' is roaming the streets of Stockholm, Sweden, for delivering food to people ordering online. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people prefer staying in and ordering from the outside. This resulted in an increased demand for food delivery services all around the world. Now, Doora, a food delivery robot powered by the 5G network of Tele2, is under the trialling phase in Stockholm. Tele2 and Foodora have partnered together to pilot the delivery droid in the country. Doora is Powered by Tele2 5G and IoTDoora is roaming the streets of Stockholm powered by the 5G network of Tele2 and the Internet of Things (IoT). It is worth noting that Tele2 became the first telecom operator to introduce a 5G network in Sweden. A low-latency network is required for a robot such as Doora to navigate in real-time and stay accurate to its path. 5G is what the robot required, and Foodora knew it. That is why the company partnered with Tele2 and is now testing the robot and its functions. With the full power of 5G, robots can utilise IoT, high-bandwidth, and low-latency networks, to automate a lot of processes and work that is done by manual labour today. Doora is created by self-driving droid producer Yape. However, it is just a test; thus, how soon the robot will be on the field, delivering food to the users, is unconfirmed. Initially, Doora will be accompanied by an engineer to ensure everything works smoothly. With the help of the 5G and IoT, robots will be able to track and measure several things, including optimising delivery routes, heat mapping, and more. However, these robots are a distant reality for people in India since the government's planning for 5G wasn't 'concrete' enough leading to delays. The government of India is expected to hold 5G spectrum auctions after 6 months, meaning a commercial 5G network might not come until early 2021. |
| Government Brings in Clause of Purchasing Gear from ‘Trusted Sources’ For ISPs Posted: 16 Mar 2021 02:00 AM PDT
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has introduced the clause of sourcing gear or equipment for the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) from trusted companies only. According to an ET Telecom report, government-run companies such as Power Grid, Oil India, GAIL, RailTel, and more can only accept equipment that is on the 'trusted' list of the centre. The new direct shall be applicable from June 15, 2021. It is worth noting that a similar clause has been introduced for telecom companies as well. ISPs to Take Permission from NCC Before Purchasing ' Non-Trusted' EquipmentAccording to the amendments introduced by the government, any of the ISPs looking to purchase equipment or gear from a non-trusted company will have to first take permission from the National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCC), a body designated by the government to take decisions on the concerned matter. At the same time, if the ISPs are under a contract with any of the 'non-trusted’ companies, which will end at a date after June 15, 2021, it can continue without any restrictions. But the power to form new contracts with 'non-trusted' companies will be removed from the hands of the ISP’s post June 15, 2021. The government has given identical orders to the telecom companies as well. All the telcos must comply with the rules and will have to communicate their decisions on the matter with the same government body, NCC. Since the time border-tensions between India and China have started growing, the government has made it hard for the Chinese companies to operate within India and banned several Chinese applications. The capital has also been asking telcos and state-run companies to avoid new contracts with the Chinese companies. This will ensure that none of the Chinese firms has any part in the 5G networks of India. Because of this, Huawei and ZTE have lost multiple contracts and meaningful business in India. |
| Samsung Devices Offered Best 5G Speeds, iPhone 12 Disappoints: Opensignal Posted: 16 Mar 2021 01:00 AM PDT
Apple needs to work on its 5G game. The latest iPhone 12 series, the first to feature 5G devices from the company, didn't even rank in the top 25 when the best devices for 5G were listed. According to a report from Opensignal, a mobile analytics company, Samsung devices captured the highest download speeds when connected with a 5G network. The report suggests that the iPhone 12 series users in the US saw 18% lesser 5G download speeds when compared to the users operating a Samsung 5G smartphone. Samsung Tops the List in 5G Followed by OnePlus and GoogleSamsung was ahead of OnePlus by a very short margin in providing the best 5G download speeds. The Samsung device leading the list in the best 5G devices was the Galaxy S21 5G. Samsung's device got an average 5G downloading speed of 54 Mbps (5G) and 34 Mbps (4G). A very little behind OnePlus delivered an average 5G downloading speed of 53.1 Mbps, but it delivered a faster 4G speed than Samsung of 38.4 Mbps. After OnePlus, Google stood at the third position with an average downloading speed of 52.2 Mbps (5G) and the best 4G downloading speed of 38.6 Mbps. LG got an average 5G downloading speed of 47.9 Mbps and 28.9 Mbps 4G speeds. Amongst the aforementioned brands, Apple's 5G and 4G speeds were the worst. Apple iPhone 12 series offered an average 5G downloading speed of 44.5 Mbps and 4G downloading speed of 18.9 Mbps. In terms of growth from the previous devices, Apple saw a 2.3 times rise in downloading speeds. But then, it was shifting from 4G to 5G, so a big gap is not surprising. Samsung registered a speed growth of 1.6 times with its new devices. Both OnePlus and Google registered 1.4 times growth in downloading speeds. As in the case of LG, its growth rate was 1.7 times. Apple needs to improve its 5G with the iPhone 13 series, which is very likely to happen. |

| 5G in India: DoT Likely to Ask Trai to Lower Prices of Airwaves Posted: 15 Mar 2021 10:13 PM PDT
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will reportedly approach the telecom regulator Trai to reduce the minimum prices set for the auction of 5G airwaves in the country. A person aware of the matter told Livemint that the DoT would soon ask Trai to reconsider the prices of 5G airwaves and the 700 MHz band spectrum that went unsold in the last two spectrum auctions. In the past, we have seen telecom operators Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea calling the reserve prices of 5G airwaves as ‘unaffordable.’ For rolling out full-fledged 5G services in India, telcos are looking to purchase spectrum in 3,300-3,600 MHz bands. The reserve price has been set at Rs 492 crore per MHz by Trai. DoT to Ask Trai for Reconsidering Reserve Prices of 5G AirwavesThe high reserve prices set by Trai for 5G airwaves will likely hamper the rollout of the next-generation services in India. While telcos have been urging to reconsidering the prices, the DoT seems to be stepping into the matter, finally. Besides the 5G airwaves, the DoT is also rumoured to ask Trai to lower the price of the spectrum in the 700 MHz band that went unsold in the recent auction. The Spectrum Auction 2021 concluded recently and there were no takers for the 700 MHz band, which was expected due to the high reserve price. Right after the auction, the DoT made a public statement regarding no bidders for the 700 MHz, saying that it will proceed with legal action against Trai on the pricing front. To recall, the 700 MHz band did not attract any buyers even in the 2016 Spectrum Auction. The Mint report also added that Trai’s decision would be the final one on the reserve pricing aspect. The DoT is considering 5G seriously and it even appointed three working groups that will review the ideal spectrum bands for rolling out 5G services in the country. The reserve prices set by Trai for 5G airwaves is nearly 4-6 times higher than that of the prices in other countries. The Trai continues to maintain silence in this regard. If Trai goes ahead with the current prices, Airtel and Vodafone Idea may not participate in the 5G spectrum auction. |
| Select Samsung and Oppo Mobiles Updated With Vodafone Idea VoWi-Fi Support Posted: 15 Mar 2021 08:55 PM PDT
Vodafone Idea rolled out VoWi-Fi or Wi-Fi Calling feature in December 2020. Since then, the company is gradually making the service accessible on more devices and locations. Initially launched in just two circles, Vodafone Idea VoWi-Fi service is now available across five circles. At the same time, Vi’s Wi-Fi Calling service was earlier limited to just Xiaomi and OnePlus smartphone, but the support has been added to select Oppo and Samsung phones as well. It is underwhelming to see Samsung phones not support Vi VoWi-Fi, but the Galaxy A50 users in the eligible circles can make use of the service at no extra cost. Three Oppo devices have also gained Wi-Fi Calling support on Vodafone Idea network. Vodafone Idea Expands VoWi-Fi Support to More PhonesOppo’s latest phones- the Reno 5 Pro 5G, the Oppo F19 Pro+ 5G and the Oppo F19 Pro are now compatible with VoWi-Fi on Vodafone Idea’s network. Both the Reno 5 Pro 5G and the F19 Pro+ 5G are powered by MediaTek Dimensity chipsets. The three phones are still not listed on Airtel’s website for Wi-Fi Calling support. For the unaware, Vodafone Idea Wi-Fi Calling service is present in five circles- Maharashtra & Goa, Kolkata, Gujarat, Delhi and Mumbai. The company is constantly expanding its service to other circles, but it might take a while for the service to roll out across the 22 circles. Overall, Vi VoWi-Fi is now compatible with nearly 50 smartphones from Xiaomi, OnePlus, Samsung and Oppo. Apple iPhones are yet to receive VoWi-Fi support from Vi, but that’s expected to happen with iOS 14.5 in the coming weeks. In contrast, Airtel Wi-Fi Calling service is now available on more than 250 smartphones, whereas Jio Wi-Fi Calling is supported by more than 300 devices. Smartphones launching in recent times are coming with Airtel VoWi-Fi and Jio Wi-Fi Calling out of the box, but that isn’t the case just yet with Vodafone Idea VoWi-Fi. In case you want to use Vi Wi-Fi Calling on your smartphone, make sure you are on the latest version of the OS. Once you have the latest software installed on your device, now make sure you have a working Wi-Fi connection and supported handset. Also, for the Vi VoWi-Fi to work, you should have a Vi 4G SIM card. If you meet the requirements, head over to the phone settings and enable Voice over Wi-Fi feature. |
| BSNL Broadband Plans of Rs 999 and Rs 1,499 Also Bundle Disney+ Hotstar Premium Subscription Posted: 15 Mar 2021 06:49 PM PDT
BSNL has been offering affordable broadband plans for more than six months now. The plans, starting at Rs 449, are part of the company’s Bharat Fiber branding and they come with speeds of up to 300 Mbps. The affordable BSNL Bharat Fiber broadband plans on offer are Rs 449 (Fibre Basic), Rs 599 (Fibre Basic Plus), Rs 799 (Fibre Value), Rs 999 (Fibre Premium) and Rs 1,499 (Fibre Ultra). BSNL did not establish partnerships with OTT players like Amazon Prime or Netflix, and these broadband plans from the ISP does not offer any such benefits. BSNL has been offering broadband plans with Disney+ Premium subscription and two plans out of the five mentioned above offer the same. The Rs 999 and Rs 1,499 plans from BSNL Broadband come with a free Disney+ Hotstar Premium subscription worth Rs 1,499 at no extra cost. BSNL Rs 999 and Rs 1,499 Broadband Plans: Benefits DetailedPriced at Rs 999, the BSNL Broadband plan offers 200 Mbps speeds up to 3.3TB every month. After the FUP limit, BSNL users can browse unlimited data at 2 Mbps speeds. The Rs 1,499 Bharat Fiber plan comes with 300 Mbps speeds up to the same 3.3TB FUP limit. The broadband plans also offer unlimited voice calling benefit. The key differentiator is the Disney+ Hotstar Premium subscription that’s bundled at no extra cost. We have seen ISPs like Airtel Xstream Fiber and JioFiber offering a lot of OTT subscriptions with broadband plans, but BSNL is the only ISP that’s providing Disney+ Hotstar Premium membership. Other ISPs provide Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription that costs just Rs 399 for one year. For those who are unaware, Disney+ Hotstar Premium costs Rs 1,499 for one year and Rs 299 for one month. The remaining affordable BSNL Broadband plans of Rs 449, Rs 599 and Rs 799 do not offer any such subscription benefit. That said, no other Internet Service Provider (ISP) in the industry is offering OTT subscriptions with broadband plans below Rs 799, so it is a sign of relief for BSNL. As for the speeds, the Rs 449 plan allows users to browse the internet at 30 Mbps, followed by the Rs 599 plan with 60 Mbps speeds and the Rs 799 plan with 100 Mbps speeds. Earlier this month, BSNL revised its broadband plans across the country to offer 300 Mbps speeds with plans priced above Rs 2,000. It is good to see BSNL making some major changes in the broadband segment as the market leader is facing immense pressure from private operators who are constantly delivering better speeds and affordable plans. |
