| Bharti Airtel is the New Reliance Jio, Adds 5.8 Million Users in January: Trai Posted: 17 Mar 2021 08:16 AM PDT
Telecom operator Bharti Airtel has added a whopping 5.8 million new subscribers in January 2021, the latest Monthly Subscription report from Trai said. In the past, we have seen Reliance Jio adding such a massive number of subscribers in a single month, and now, Airtel has taken its position. The Mukesh Ambani-owned Jio has managed to grab just 1.9 million new users during the month. The Trai data shows Vodafone Idea has added 1.7 million new customers, just falling short of Jio. This news will come as a big relief to Vodafone Idea which continuously lost subscribers every month since October 2019. Bharti Airtel also beats Reliance Jio on the active users front as the telco has 335.77 million VLR customers compared to Jio’s 324.52 million. Vodafone Idea Finally Adds New SubscribersVodafone Idea is getting back on track, and the company is also looking to serve only the paying customers, similar to Bharti Airtel. At the end of January 2021, Reliance Jio is the biggest telecom operator in the country with 410.73 million subscribers under its belt, followed by Bharti Airtel with 344.60 million users. Vodafone Idea is third on the list with 285.97 million overall userbase. State-run BSNL ended the month with 118.79 million users, of which only 61.40 million are active. As for the monthly additions, BSNL grabbed 83,738 users during the month. Bharti Airtel is constantly more new subscribers than Reliance Jio which is becoming a worry for the top telecom operator. Jio introduced new JioPhone offers in February 2021 and it will be interesting to see whether the offers make any difference to the monthly subscriber additions. Thanks to the new JioPhone offers, Vi is pushing back the tariff hike to the end of Q1 FY22. Talking about Mobile Number Portability (MNP), the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) received 7.63 million requests. The cumulative MNP requests in India increased from 544.61 million at the end of December 2020 to 552.24 million at the end of January 2021. The first month of 2021 is proved to be good for Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, but Reliance Jio will be looking at introducing new schemes to boost the subscriber base. The telco is looking to reach 500 million subscriber base, however, the growth rate has slowed down dramatically after surpassing the 400 million subscriber mark. |

Broadband connections allow us to use high-speed internet for various purposes. However, there are many cases in which internet speed is reduced. One of the major reasons behind low internet speed is strange connections. If your password is easy to decode, strangers will hog in your connection and reduce the internet speed. Not only this, but hackers can exploit your devices and steal private information. The broadband arm of Airtel offers simple ways through which you can change your Wi-Fi password. If you are an Airtel broadband customer, follow the article to the end for a detailed guide.

| OTT Platforms Future Evoke Polarizing Response from Analysts Posted: 17 Mar 2021 06:09 AM PDT
OTT Challenge Storm in Tea-CupHowever, the company said that the movies that go through a theatrical release will receive higher returns on the OTT platforms. "On the other hand if it (movie) goes first through a theatrical release, OTT revenues get enhanced if the movie is a reasonable theatrical success," Nirmal Bang said in a report. "OTT challenge in our view is [a] storm in a tea-cup." The company said that the Indian multiplex industry structure where the top four players control 70% of the screens will continue to remain so as "there are no substitutes." Crucially, it was said that the multiplex industry will register "steady revenue growth" in the upcoming years. The report is significant as Nirmal Bang in a separate report said that the COVID-19 pandemic has led to the acceleration towards trends such as digitisation and remote working. The company also said that the pandemic has resulted in the world moving from a "shared economy" to "collaborating in isolation." Nirmal Bang said that the pandemic has turned several users into "digital consumer" as these users "discovered the convenience of e-commerce, grocery delivery ordered via app and other online activities." Additionally, the company said that the digital media in the past decade has "increasingly played a role in influencing consumer preferences." Market Dynamics Have Evolved, OTT a Well-Known EvilMultiple other analysts, however, have said in the recent past that more movies "may be released on OTT platforms" in the upcoming quarters. In February, Motilal Oswal Financial Services highlighted that the size of the OTT subscription market hit Rs 28 billion in 2019 with the market doubling in the past year. "The improving ecosystem of OTT consumption, led by increased digital content and data penetration, is a well-known evil," Motilal Oswal said in a report in February. "This is despite the Cinema segment's value propositions, such as a better movie-watching experience, limited alternatives for recreation in India, and favorable comparisons with the developed markets." The firm highlighted that the OTT segment contributes around 10% to the movie revenue share, up from 5% in 2017, with the segment expected to cross 13% by the next financial year. Crucially, Motilal Oswal said that several small and mid budget projects would "prefer OTT platforms for direct releases." Meanwhile, OTT platforms including Disney and Netflix have consistently offered positive comments on the Indian market. "With a rapidly growing middle class and expanding discretionary spending, India is a promising market opportunity," Rebecca Campbell, chairman, Direct-to-Consumer, the Walt Disney Company, said in the investor day conference in December, 2020. Campbell also said that the Disney+ Hotstar provides a "massive collection of local content" with the company "adding over 17,000 hours of original local programming" each year. Amazon, the e-commerce giant in late January said that the users are "streaming more than ever before" and that Fire TV, its streaming device, witnessed over 50 million monthly active users across the world. The company also said that the total hours spent by its active users on its Fire TV devices "more than doubled in 2020." Amazon said that its users on average spent over three hours per day on Fire TV devices through 2020. With multiple states across India re-introducing the lockdown measures and placing special restrictions due to the rise in COVID-19 cases, OTT platforms might once again see a spike in users. However, it remains to be seen whether the users turn to multiplex or stick to OTT platforms post COVID-19. |

| Plans from Airtel, Vi Might Become ‘Indirectly’ Expensive Soon Posted: 17 Mar 2021 04:30 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, the second and third largest telecom operators of India, might just increase the tariffs for their offerings. According to an ET Telecom report, both the telcos might introduce increased tariffs in an 'indirect' manner. 'Indirectly' here means that the telcos might keep the overall pricing of the plans the same as they are now but reduce the benefits they come with. So essentially, you will be paying the same amount of money for lesser data and calling benefits. But this is not all; the telcos might just make all the prepaid plans that comprise of tax at the moment, 'pre-tax'. This would effectively increase the overall prices for the plans. Indirect Tariff Hike Might Create Unnecessary Confusions for ConsumersAccording to Kunal Vora, senior telecom analyst, the indirect tariff hike might contribute to unnecessary confusions for consumers. PhilipsCapital expects that changing the current plans and making them 'pre-tax' would amount to an effective increase of 18% on the plan's prices. Further, some analysts believe that if the telcos were to charge tax separately, it would result in a customer churn rate. This is because 95% of the consumers in India are price sensitive. Jio might just become the telco of choice for consumers if Vi and Airtel increase the tariffs indirectly. Further, customers would feel cheated if the telcos offer fewer benefits for the same price with the plan. Amidst all this, Vi is expected to target a higher market share. For doing that, the telco is expected to keep offering plans for the same tariffs for the ongoing and the coming quarter. The telco is not expected to increase the tariffs until Q3 of 2021. As for Airtel, this wouldn't be the best move for the telco since it has been growing subscribers at an increasing trend quarter after quarter. If it does this, there is a huge chance that a large percentage of users would go to Jio, and its growth rate might subside. |
| Vodafone Idea Fastest 4G Network in Assam For Second Consecutive Quarter: Ookla Posted: 17 Mar 2021 03:30 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been recognised as the fastest 4G network in the state of Assam. It is worth noting that the telco has bagged the title twice now in straight consecutive quarters. For the unaware, Ookla is a global leader in testing broadband and mobile networks. According to Ookla, Vi delivered the fastest 4G download and upload speeds in Assam for two straight quarters. For the last six months of 2020, there was no other operator in Assam who could dethrone Vi in providing faster speeds. Adding to this, Vi also offered users the best voice calling quality across India during the last three months according to Trai's MyCall (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) report. Vodafone Idea's 4G Network Across India Set to Become Better?Vi is increasing its 4G capacity across India. The telco is refarming all its 3G spectrum to 4G across states in a phased manner. This is one of the reasons why its network quality has increased lately. Further, previous reports from Ookla suggest that Vi was the fastest 4G network pan-India for the last two quarters of 2020. Despite offering the best 4G network, the telco has kept on losing subscribers. On top of this, Vi has rolled out some very unique offers such as 'Weekend Data Rollover' and unlimited data after 12 AM to 6 AM for users on select plans. Vi has also partnered with Aditya Birla Health Insurance and is offering prepaid plans to users that offer them free insurance. Further, Vi users can now enjoy the over-the-top (OTT) benefits of Disney+ Hotstar and Amazon Prime Video on select prepaid plans. The telco needs to reduce its subscriber churn rate as fast as possible and gain market share before it introduces tariff hikes. Vi is expected to increase tariffs from Q3, 2021, which is still a little far away. Hopefully, enhancing its 4G network capacity will help the telco in the long-term. |
| Spotlight, TikTok Rival Created by Snapchat to Help Indian Creators Earn Posted: 17 Mar 2021 02:30 AM PDT
Snapchat has just launched its short-video content platform 'Spotlight' in India. It is worth noting that it is a 'feature' and not an 'application'. The feature is said to be a rival of TikTok, which was banned from India last year. Along with India, the feature has also been launched in Brazil and Mexico. Spotlight has already been available for users in the United States and 10 other countries. The feature had over 100 million users as of January on it. For the unaware, Spotlight allows users to create 60 seconds videos just like TikTok and offers it in a vertical feed to the users. Adding to this, the feed will look a lot more personalised to the users as time progresses because Spotlight uses customer's preferences and behaviour to determine what kind of videos they like more. But it is a little different from TikTok and even Instagram Reels in some manners. Spotlight Features You Should Know AboutSpotlight doesn't allow other users consuming the content of a creator to comment on it. Thus the scope of getting comments from the public is totally gone. According to an ET Telecom report, Snapchat Inc. has said that Indian creators will be able to earn through the company's $1 million daily fund if they make some of the most popular videos on the platform. However, the creators must be at least 16 years old or get permission from their parents before they can start earning from the platform. Since the time TikTok has been banned from India, multiple new short-video platforms such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, Mx Player's TataTak have been competing very hard to gain the largest market share of users. Just last week, Lomotif, another short-video based application, announced its plans to launch in India. Even Facebook is now allowing users to create short videos and share it with their friends on the platform. |
| 5G Airwaves Too Expensive, DoT May Go After Trai for Price Reduction Posted: 17 Mar 2021 01:30 AM PDT
The pricing of 5G airwaves has been termed as 'unaffordable' by telcos in the past. To ensure a smooth 5G roll out across the nation, the floor prices set by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) need to be reduced. According to a Livemint report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is likely to have a chat about the same with the regulator. In the recently concluded spectrum auctions for 4G airwaves, the 700 MHz spectrum saw no interest from any of the telcos. Even though it is considered important for providing 5G services, none of the telcos bid for it due to its exorbitant pricing. Reserve Price For 5G SpectrumThe reserve price for the 5G spectrum is set at Rs 492 crore per MHz of spectrum in the 3300-3600 MHz band by the regulator. Since the telcos will have to purchase blocks of the airwaves, it will become too steep for them to pay for acquiring the concerned airwaves. At a time like this, Vodafone Idea (Vi), who is still in a major recovery mode, will not be able to pay for the spectrum. Even Bharti Airtel believes that the 5G spectrum pricing is not fair. The telcos also need to pay adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues to the centre, which doesn't give them a lot of room to spend huge sums of money on the spectrum. Further, along with the 700 MHz band, even the 2500 MHz band remained unsold in the spectrum auctions. DoT might soon have a chat with Trai about the pricing of the airwaves. But at the end of the day, it is Trai that decides the spectrum pricing, DoT can only recommend. The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) had also observed that the spectrum being availed for the Indian telcos is at least 4 to 6 times higher than what the other countries offer to their operators. The regulator seriously needs to reconsider the pricing of the spectrum and allow some relief to the telcos. |

| Telcos to Start Filtering SMS Today, No Message Blocking Anymore Posted: 16 Mar 2021 11:18 PM PDT
Through its letter on Tuesday, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has asked the telcos to start filtering the SMSes from March 17, 2021. However, the regulator has asked the telcos not to block any message even if it doesn't comply with the necessary template rules. According to an ET Telecom report, businesses won't have to worry about facing message blocking issues for now. The last time the regulator implemented the rule, around 400 million messages, including important SMSes such as OTPs and more, were blocked. Thus, this news will come as a major relief for the companies/businesses, which, for some reason, couldn't implement and comply with the new SMS regimes. SMS Filtering to Go On and Everything Must be RecordedTrai has asked the telcos to continue monitoring the messages. It said that regardless of the content, deliver the message but record any shortfalls of the message in complying with the new template. The telcos will be using blockchain technology to scrub the messages. All the content of the SMS will be filtered using pre-registered templates. Further, the telcos will have to make a summary of all the data recorded, which then needs to be submitted to the authority two times a week. It is worth noting that the telcos have been filtering the messages since the last week. While they stopped blocking the messages, SMS filtering has been going on. This is done so that the individual companies not following the SMS template rules can be helped with implementing it on their system. The operators have already listed around 1.2 million white SMS templates, and if they are able to identify 3,00,000 more, there will be 100% SMS traffic complying with the new template rules. The regulator and the operators are in quite a hurry to implement the new SMS system. This is because of the order passed by the Delhi High Court that doesn't want to see any more delays. |
| No Galaxy Note 21 This Year, Confirms Samsung Posted: 16 Mar 2021 10:13 PM PDT
Samsung will not be launching a new Galaxy Note smartphone this year. The Samsung Galaxy Note 21 was expected to launch sometime in the second half of 2021, but due to chip shortages around the globe, the South Korean electronics company is considering skipping the next smartphone in its iconic Note series. This news may not surprise many as Samsung was heavily rumoured of letting go of the Note 21 this year. During an annual shareholders’ meeting in Seoul, Samsung’s co-Chief Executive Officer Koh Dong-jin said the company will be skipping the Note 21 this year, however, he confirmed that the company would be back with Note 22 next year. Samsung Galaxy Note 21 Cancelled OfficiallyApart from confirming the Galaxy Note 21 launch cancellation, Samsung also raised its voice regarding the chip shortages in the smartphone industry. The main reason behind Samsung cancelling Galaxy Note 21 is the chip shortages alongside raising severe concerns to its business owing to the same issue. Ever since the Galaxy Note 20 series came out, there was news regarding the cancellation of the Galaxy Note series entirely. Samsung rubbished the rumours earlier this year, saying the Galaxy Note series is here to stay. Apparently, the company is skipping the Galaxy Note 21 this year but says the Note series will make a comeback next year. "Note series is positioned as a high-end model in our business portfolio. It could be a burden to unveil two flagship models in a year, so it might be difficult to release the Note model in 2H. The timing of the Note model launch can be changed, but we seek to release a Note model next year," said Koh Dong-jin. Nevertheless, we can expect Samsung to launch at least two foldables and the Galaxy S21 FE in the 2H 2021. The successors to the Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy Z Fold 2 and the Galaxy S20 FE are already in the works. Besides the smartphone industry, chip shortages are also hampering shipments in the automotive industry. |
| DisplayMate Says OnePlus 9 Pro Has An Excellent Top-Tier World Class Smartphone Screen Posted: 16 Mar 2021 08:51 PM PDT
OnePlus 9 Pro received an A+ rating from DisplayMate. OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced this news on Twitter, saying the upcoming flagship smartphone will hold 13 display performance records. The OnePlus 9 Pro will go official on March 23. Right after the DisplayMate rating tweet, the CEO also revealed the complete display specifications of the smartphone. The OnePlus 9 Pro will have a Quad HD+ screen with a Smart 120Hz refresh rate, 1300 nits of brightness levels, MEMC, HDR1+ and so on. OnePlus also says the 120Hz refresh rate on the OnePlus 9 Pro will be ‘responsive’ than another smartphone with a 120Hz display. DisplayMate also said the 9 Pro features ‘An Excellent Top-Tier World Class Smartphone Display.’ OnePlus 9 Pro Display Specs Revealed: Check Full DetailsThe OnePlus 8 Pro had one of the best screens on any smartphone last year. And the trend continues with the OnePlus 9 Pro as well. Keeping DisplayMate rating aside, the on-paper display specs of the OnePlus 9 Pro are top-notch. For starters, the phone will sport a 6.67-inch LTOP Quad HD+ screen with a Smart 120Hz refresh rate. OnePlus is using the term ‘Smart’ because the phone is capable of going all the way down to a 1Hz refresh rate when you are not using it. Yes, you heard it right. Pete Lau announced that OnePlus would lead the ‘low refresh rates’ segment as well. He said the OnePlus 9 Series would switch anywhere from 1-120Hz when you need it, which improves the overall battery life. The display will also offer native 10-bit colour depth (1.07 billion colours), 1300 nits of brightness levels, MEMC (Motion Estimation, Motion Compensation) and HDR10+. No doubt these are top-notch specs on paper. The official Twitter handle of OnePlus also teased the ‘Hyper Touch’ feature on OnePlus 9 Pro. In the short video posted by the company, it compared the 120Hz screen on the OnePlus 9 Pro to that of the same 120Hz refresh rate display on the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The video shows the 120Hz screen of the OnePlus 9 Pro is slightly on the more responsive side, but again, the difference seems to be very negligible. OnePlus first teased the cameras specs of the OnePlus 9 Pro before revealing the complete display specs. The OnePlus 9 Pro is shaping up to be a great flagship smartphone. The phone is also expected to come with 50W wireless charging support, 65W wired fast charging, Snapdragon 888 5G SoC and a decent 4500mAh battery. |
