| Here’s How You Can Temporarily Dismiss Netflix’s New Password Sharing Check Posted: 18 Mar 2021 08:30 AM PDT
Sharing a password is comparatively one of the better ways to access a high-definition OTT subscription as it gets cheaper while sharing than owning an individual account. It is a common practice around the world. Nearly users around the globe exchange their password for letting their friends or family members enjoy shows and movies on the OTT platforms. Netflix is aware of the common practice since it is one of the major reasons for revenue fall and slow addition of the new memberships. To counter the practice, Netflix is beginning to take steps. Recently the OTT giant has enforced a new clause in its terms and conditions section stating an account "cannot be shared beyond the household." However, it seems that the company's block can be bypassed for now. Here's how to do it, read till the end for a detailed guide. Steps to Temporarily Dismiss Netflix's Password Sharing CheckYou will see three options at the bottom of the screen once the pop-up message is visible. The first option is 'email code' you can select this option and ask the owner of the account to share the code. You can simply enter the code, and you should be able to reuse the App. In case the previous trick does not work, you can go for the next option that is 'Text Code'. Again, you can ask for the code and resume using the streaming platform. If this too fails, you simply tap on 'Verify Later' that appears on the right side of the screen. Few Other Things You Might Want to KnowEventually, Netflix might disable or limit the ability to skip verification. Since the company is still testing options, future checks might get much more uncompromising or might also limit the number of times code is shared. We do not endorse any methods or procedures to outcast official measures stated by Netflix in their terms and conditions section |

| ‘Mobile Seva Appstore’, Indian Government’s Mobile App Store to Get Boost Posted: 18 Mar 2021 06:30 AM PDT
The Indian government's own mobile app store, called the 'Mobile Seva Appstore', hosts more than 965 applications from several different domains and categories. According to a PTI report, the parliament on Thursday was informed about the 'boost' that is going to be provided to the government's indigenous mobile app store. IT Minister Ravishankar Prasad confirmed about the same in reply to Rajya Sabha. Prasad said that the response to the idea and the indigenous app store is great. India the Biggest Consumer of Mobile Applications GloballyPrasad said India is the biggest consumer of mobile applications globally. He was asked what would the government do if Apple or Google remove their application stores from India. He noted that according to a report from India App Market Statistics 2021, 5% of the applications on the Google Play store are contributed from the Indians. Now, the Indian government is looking to be less dependent on the other nation's app stores and developers for accessing digital solutions. Rather, the government is encouraging developers to host indigenous applications on the government-owned mobile app store. Prasad said that the government-owned app store must host all the apps during the initial stages without any costs. Now the centre is asking private applications to become a part of its indigenous app store as well. This move will ensure that Indians won't have to depend on the likes of Google and Apple for accessing applications. Further, more and more developers will get a chance to create new applications and showcase their talent on the platform. At present, there are more than 965 live applications on the 'Mobile Seva Appstore'. With the government’s recent announcement, it is expected that more applications might become part of the platform soon. Further, private applications that already exist on other app stores might decide to become a part of the government-owned mobile application store. |

| Attractive Entry-Level Broadband Plans Couldn’t Help Jio and Airtel Much Posted: 18 Mar 2021 03:55 AM PDT
The Indian broadband industry saw a strong growth since the pandemic hit, and work-from-home became the new normal. As the market became more competitive with more players adding every quarter, big Internet Service Providers (ISPs) such as Airtel, Jio, and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) started offering cheaper broadband plans to the users. A few months back, Jio, Airtel, and BSNL launched new entry-level plans priced much lower than the 100 Mbps plans. The price range of the plans offered by the ISPs was almost the same, and that led to huge competition again. But it looks like the entry-level broadband plans haven't served the service providers as well as they hoped it would. Slower Than Expected Growth for Airtel and Jio's Broadband BusinessAccording to analysts, the growth rate of Airtel and Jio's broadband business isn't what was expected from them. Jio and Airtel added 0.18 million and 0.09 million broadband subscribers in the month of January 2021. It took the total subscriber base of fixed broadband connections for the companies to 2.3 million (Jio) and 2.9 million (Airtel). Overall, fixed broadband subscribers in the country grew by 0.38 million in January, taking the total number of such subscribers to 22.7 million. The numbers were up by 1.7% MoM and 18.8% YoY. ICICI Securities said that Airtel's market share improved very slightly and became 12.8%, while Jio's market share also increased to reach 9.9%. It is worth noting that BSNL is still the king in India when it comes to having the highest market share in the fixed broadband domain. The operator had 33% market share in January. However, it had declined substantially since September 2019, when it was 44.4%. Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio hold the second and third positions in terms of market share for fixed broadband connections in India. All the data was taken from Trai's 'Telecom Subscription Data Report' for January 31, 2021. |
| Vodafone Idea Has a Future Ready Network for 5G: Ravinder Takkar Posted: 18 Mar 2021 02:42 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi), the third-largest telecom operator of India, is ready to shift to 5G. The telco has a future-proof network and is also the leader in the country’s Internet of Things (IoT) offerings. According to an ET Telecom report, Ravinder Takkar, Managing Director (MD), Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), believes that the telco has a future-ready network. He said that Vi's network is ready to take on 5G. Takkar said Vi provides differentiated propositions to its customers like private wireless, fixed wireless access, and gigabit optical networks. Vi's Cloud Connect Supports 5G TechnologiesTakkar said that Vi's Cloud Connect services are being offered to the customers in partnership with leading cloud platforms globally. The platform is 5G ready and uses technologies such as smart automation and SD-WAN. Takkar believes that Vi is the leader in IoT offerings in India. The telco is already working with enterprises and the government in several fields and sectors. Vi believes that the issue of low-levels of fiberisation should be addressed quickly. In addition to this, the telco said that other issues such as 5G spectrum availability and high-floor price for the spectrum need to be addressed. Takkar said that Vi started deploying 5G ready technologies on its network three years back. Because of that, today, Vi's IP network is 5G ready. Further, the executive said that Vi would leverage the 5G technology that Vodafone group has already deployed in several European markets. India is still far away from testing 5G with the dedicated spectrum in the 3300-3600 MHz frequency bands. Adding to this, Takkar noted that the availability of low-cost 5G devices would play a crucial role in the telcos in expanding the next-generation technology throughout India. He said that India needs to ensure the fast availability of affordable smartphones and devices that can support 5G. |

| BSNL Won’t be Privatised Says Government, to Launch 4G in 2 Years Posted: 18 Mar 2021 12:22 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has faced several roadblocks in the process of rolling out its 4G network in India. The telco's survival depends on rolling out 4G as fast as possible. At the same time, the government has said that it won't privatise BSNL. Many aware of the industry assumed that it might be the most likely outcome, but Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Communications, said that the government isn't looking to privatise BSNL. He further said that the telco should be able to launch 4G services throughout India within 18 to 24 months. BSNL Might Continue Offering 2G, Looking to Launch Hybrid 4GAccording to a PTI report, when questioned, Dhotre didn't clarify whether BSNL will continue offering 2G to users in the country. With the world shifting towards 5G, India still has millions of 2G customers, thus it is safe to assume that BSNL will keep offering 2G at least for a few more years. Two days back, a report from Financial Express said that BSNL is looking to boost the 4G roll out and might go with a hybrid plan wherein it includes both the foreign vendors and Indian companies into its network. The telco has suggested two different tender plans to the government which include splitting each tender into two parts. BSNL's worries just don't seem to end. The telco is surviving because of its revival package introduced by the government in 2019. The problem that lies for BSNL at the moment is that none of the Indian vendors has proven technology for the network core. Further, it takes a bit of time to produce proof of concept (PoC) for the same. If BSNL can introduce 4G at a surprising speed, it will not only be beneficial for the telco but the overall market since the power at the moment lies mostly with Jio and Airtel. After BSNL's 4G, it might get distributed which will motivate telcos to offer aggressive plans. |

| Another Tariff Hike Will Set Back the Slowly Recovering Vodafone Idea Posted: 17 Mar 2021 09:08 PM PDT
Telecom operator Vodafone Idea is recovering slowly after losing more than 150 million subscribers over the last two years. Vi has been struggling in the industry ever since Reliance Jio entered the Indian telecom market. It has been a tough ride for Vodafone Idea, to say the least, but the best part is the telecom operator is bouncing back strongly. After announcing the new brand identity in 2020, we are looking at a completely different Vodafone Idea. The telco is coming up with new offers now and then; For example, it has a slew of unique offers such as unlimited night data, weekend data rollover facility, extra data benefit on select plans and so on. Yesterday’s Trai monthly subscription data for January 2021 showed that Vi has finally managed to add 1.7 million new subscribers. There’s no doubt that Vi is getting back on track, but a tariff hike will set back the company by a huge margin. Why It Is Good for Vi to Avoid Hiking Tariff PricesWe saw telecom operators hiking tariff prices by up to 40% in December 2019. A 1.4GB data per day plan with 84 days used to cost Rs 399 in the past, but the price has been hiked to Rs 599 now. If we consider another tariff hike, the price of the same plan could go to Rs 799. While a tariff hike is good for telecom operators, it may hurt subscriber additions, an area where Vodafone Idea is struggling to keep up with the competition. Over the last few months, Vi was heavily rumoured to hike tariffs by the end of Q4 FY21, but a recent report said the telco is going against the tariff hike for now. Staying away from tariff hike will be a good option for Vodafone Idea in the current scenario. The telco’s overall subscriber base at the end of January 2021 is just over 285 million. Vi should look at taking the subscriber base past 300 million alongside increasing the ARPU. For the unaware, Vi’s ARPU is also the lowest amongst private telcos sitting at just Rs 121. In my opinion, Vi should not increase tariff prices till it reaches an ARPU of Rs 150. Even with affordable prepaid plans in the industry, Reliance Jio isn’t doing any better in terms of subscriber additions. But Bharti Airtel is doing an exceptional job at the box office because of the superior network service it delivers. Vodafone Idea is now looking at a tariff hike by the end of Q1 FY22, which is just three months away. The telco should go with this decision considering the results it achieves in the last quarter of FY21, ending on March 31, 2021. What’s your view on Vodafone Idea hiking tariff prices? Let us know by commenting below. |
| JioFiber Adds 1.96 Lakh New Users in January, Aims at Grabbing 2nd Spot from Airtel Broadband Posted: 17 Mar 2021 06:53 PM PDT
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) released Telecom Subscription Data Report as of January 31, 2021. We have already reported the wireless subscription data of telecom operators, and the same report has wireline subscription data of broadband service providers. In the report, Trai said BSNL lost 2.13 lakh existing users, but JioFiber gained 1.96 lakh new customers. Bharti Airtel added just 76,654 new customers. At the end of January 2021, JioFiber’ subscriber base stood at 2.25 million. BSNL is still the leading broadband operator in India, with an overall userbase of 7.69 million. If JioFiber continues to add subscribers at this pace, Airtel Xstream Fiber will likely lose its second spot. BSNL Lost 2.13 Lakh Users But Continues to Lead the MarketThe introduction of affordable broadband plans is not making any difference to BSNL as the ISP continues to lose subscribers on a larger number. However, BSNL will retain its position for another 5-6 quarters as the second-ranked Airtel Xstream Fiber has a subscriber base of 2.90 million. Apart from JioFiber, no other company added more than one lakh subscribers during the month which is underwhelming. Despite offering affordable plans starting at Rs 499, Airtel Xstream Fiber added just 76,654 new customers. JioFiber is third on the list with 2.25 million overall userbase, followed by ACT Fibernet with 1.80 million and Hathway Cable & Datacom with 1.05 million. Slowly and steadily, JioFiber is inching towards grabbing the second spot from Airtel Xstream Fiber. That said, JioFiber‘ subscriber base isn’t growing at a rapid pace either. For the unaware, JioFiber has the cheapest broadband plans in the industry right now, starting at Rs 399, and it has a full-fibre network all over the country. JioFiber is also facing immense competition from other operators like Airtel Xstream Fiber, BSNL Broadband and other local ISPs which are even providing 1 Gbps plans at affordable rates. As of January 31, 2021, the overall wired broadband subscriber base in India stood at 22.67 million. With several industries opening-up after the pandemic, wired broadband growth will likely slowdown in the coming months. In other news, Bharti Airtel has added three times more subscribers than Reliance Jio in the telecom side of things. The country’ second-largest telecom operator added 5.8 million users in January 2021, whereas Jio added just 1.9 million users. |
