BSNL 4G Launch Can Change the Overall Telecom Market: Opinion

Whenever Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launches 4G services pan-India, it will completely change the competition structure of the Indian telecom. The state-run telco is surviving through its revival package and fixed-line broadband connections at the moment.

Millions of users are still utilising 2G and 3G networks of the telco. Thus the telco might not shut down its older-general networks, but it is in immediate need of launching 4G services.

This is because it will help the telco increase its average revenue per user (APRU) that will further improve its overall revenues. More importantly, it might make the private operators a little nervous.

BSNL 4G Will Increase Market Competition, Telcos Might Offer Aggressive Plans

BSNL is eyeing launching a hybrid 4G network. The telco has communicated the same with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). But the operator is yet to receive any response for it.

If BSNL is allowed to go with hybrid 4G, it might roll-out 4G services in the next 10 months. This should make Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) nervous.

At present, the private operators don't see BSNL as a threat at all. Vi is anyway losing subscribers every quarter. But if BSNL launches 4G and avails it at a low-cost to the users with unique offers, it should rapidly increase its market share in mobile services.

Each telco will be more active in terms of offering aggressive offers. At that time, if BSNL is offering cheaper 4G, telcos will be reluctant to even think about tariff hikes. But all of this is only possible if the government allows BSNL to go with its hybrid 4G plans.

Otherwise, if BSNL has to go ahead with equipment and technology from India companies, it will take the telco at least two more years to launch its 4G services in the country.

5G Roll-Out Should be Fast-Tracked, Government Needs to Understand: Opinion

5G, the next-generation network technology, still feels like a distant dream to millions in India. This is because of poor planning by the government. Further delays in the roll-out of 5G will put India severely behind other nations.

India has one of the largest telecom markets in the world. If it can roll-out commercial 5G networks soon, it will have the opportunity to lead the world in the said technology.

5G has several use-cases, some of which haven't even been discovered yet. Thus, an early roll-out of 5G will allow India to innovate and produce faster than other nations.

India Behind Other Nations in 5G At the Moment

Looking at the global 5G map, India seems to be too behind other nations. Even Nepal is going to test 5G soon and might launch it commercially this year.

While India is a much bigger market than Nepal, even a soft-launch of 5G in metro cities will allow the operators to rapidly test and improve their technology.

Many nations have already started testing 5G for multiple use-cases and deploying new technology based on that. For India to stay ahead of the curve, the government will have to reassess its plans for 5G soon.

The telcos submitted proposals for testing 5G in the 3300-3600 MHz spectrum more than a year ago, but the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) hasn't provided them with the spectrum yet.

All the private operators in India have said their networks are 5G ready. It will take them no time to upgrade their networks to provide seamless 5G services.

The government plans to hold an auction for the 5G spectrum in the second half of 2021. However, telcos such as Airtel have said that the floor price for the 5G spectrum is too high. The government needs to reduce before telcos can even think about purchasing it.

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, is expected to launch a new 5G smartphone and JioBook later this year. The telco is developing its first 5G smartphone in partnership with Google.

According to an ET Telecom report, the company might announce both JioBook and its 5G smartphone at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year. Usually, Jio announces new products in the second half of a calendar year at its AGM event.

This year might be no exception to this ritual by the company. Last year, the telco announced several new products and initiatives at the AGM event held in September. This year's AGM is also expected to be around the same time.

Jio 5G Smartphone Might Feature Android Go OS

Reliance Jio's aim with its first 5G smartphone is to avail it for a low-cost to Indian citizens. The telco did the same with JioPhone, and it paid off.

An executive close to the matter said that companies (Jio and Google) are still talking about which version of the Android should the smartphone feature. He said that it might feature the Android Go operating system (OS) and come with entry-level specifications.

Further, Jio is also expected to announce JioBook, a low-cost laptop for Indian citizens. According to a 2018 report from ET Telecom, the telco was looking to build laptops powered by the Qualcomm chipsets.

The move from Jio to introduce a low-cost smartphone that will support both 4G and 5G should help it gain more market share. All the JioPhone users coming out of their three-year contracts later this year might look for better specifications low-cost smartphones, which might be something for Jio to play around with.

The new smartphone from Jio might run on JioOS based on Android. It will be worth waiting to see what Jio is cooking with Google on the smartphone end and how much it will be priced.
