| Vodafone Idea’s Incorrect Subscriber Data Reporting is an Inadvertent Error, Says Trai Posted: 22 Mar 2021 09:16 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea, which sent out incorrect subscriber data for the month of January 2021 to Trai, may be further questioned by the regulator if it feels the reason provided is not enough. Trai is also examining the error and even called it ‘inadvertent,’ reports Livemint. For the unaware, Vodafone Idea reported incorrect subscriber additions for the UP West telecom circle which surprised analysts. Trai’s Monthly Subscription Report for January 2021 showed Vodafone Idea lost subscribers in 18 circles and gained in four circles. The telco added subscribers after more than 15 months and seemed to be making a comeback. The Trai will release an updated report later this week. Trai Not Ruling Out the Genuine Mistake ThoughtThe Mint report further added that Trai is not ruling out the genuine mistake thought from the telco’s end. “It could be a genuine mistake, we are not disputing that,” said an official at the regulator to the publication. The official also said the Trai is currently examining the error and the reason provided by Vodafone Idea. The telco did not reveal the reason behind sending incorrect data to Trai. If the reason provided by Vodafone Idea is not enough, the telco will be questioned further. As mentioned above, the updated subscription data will be reported later this week. Vodafone Idea may have added subscribers in January, although not in a huge number of 1.7 million. Vodafone Idea is struggling to keep up with the competition in recent years. The telco’s ARPU is also on the lower side at Rs 121 at the end of December 2020. Despite putting in its best efforts, Vi is losing subscribers. It has several unique offers right now like Double Data on select plans, Weekend Data Rollover Facility, Unlimited Night Data and so on. Having said that, we are eagerly waiting for the new data from Trai. In January, Bharti Airtel led the subscriber additions chart with 5.8 million new users joining its network, followed by Reliance Jio with 1.9 million. The incorrect data meant Vi added 1.7 million subscribers. |
| Huawei Might Help Chile Roll Out Commercial 5G Network in 2 Years Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:30 AM PDT
Chile, a country in South America, is targeting to roll out a commercial 5G network soon but with strict security policies. If its plans are successful, it will get much ahead of its neighbouring nations in terms of technology very fast. Use cases of 5G go well beyond what users can even comprehend with 4G. Thus operating a commercial 5G network in most parts of the country will enable Chile to advance into a bigger economy much quicker. However, Chile will put a special focus on the security norms and regulations related to the 5G rollout — more details on the story ahead. Chile to Allow Huawei and Other Chinese Firms in Helping With 5GAccording to a Reuters report, Pamela Gidi, telecommunications undersecretary, said Chile is keeping its doors open for companies to help with the 5G rollout regardless of their nationality. Until the companies are complying with the government’s regulations, there would be no restrictions for them to be a part of the 5G rollout in the country. The USA and China do not see eye to eye regarding cybersecurity, with the former nation accusing the latter of being 'unsafe' with data privacy and more. Huawei, one of the Chinese firms accused by the US to be 'unsafe', has denied the claims every opportunity it has found. Gidi said that every company in the world has the freedom to provide gear or help with the 5G rollout in Chile till the time they comply with all the legal liabilities. WOM, a mobile service provider owned by Novator Partners based out of London, recently won the tender of setting up a commercial 5G network in Chile. The company might go to Huawei for helping with the 5G rollout in the country. Based on the comments made by Gidi, it feels like Huawei might be able to provide gear and technology to WOM if it can meet all the regulations set by Chile. |
| Poco X3 Pro Launched: Snapdragon 860 SoC, Android 11 and 120Hz Display in Tow Posted: 22 Mar 2021 07:54 AM PDT
Poco has introduced a new smartphone called the Poco X3 Pro. It is the first phone in the world to feature Qualcomm Snapdragon 860 chipset. Specifications of the Poco X3 Pro are very similar to the Poco X3 that was launched in India and other markets. The phone rocks a 6.7-inch 120Hz screen and it boots Android 11 out of the box. The Poco X3 Pro could be the phone that Poco India will launch on March 30 for under Rs 20,000. Apart from the Poco X3 Pro, Poco also launched Poco F3 which is basically a rebranded Redmi K40 5G with Snapdragon 870 chipset. The X3 Pro is the phone to look out for because the company is teasing that it will replicate the same success as the Poco F1. A Poco can only beat a Poco, says Poco India. Poco X3 Pro: Specifications and FeaturesAs noted, the Poco X3 Pro shares a lot of similarities with the Poco X3 (design and majority of hardware specs). The Poco X3 Pro flaunts a 6.67-inch Full HD+ LCD display with 120Hz refresh rate, 240Hz touch sampling rate and Corning Gorilla Glass protection on top. If that sounds familiar, yes, they are the same display specs as the Poco X3. At the heart of the Poco X3 Pro, we have the Snapdragon 860 chipset, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. The phone comes in two configurations- 6GB+128GB and 8GB+256GB. As for the cameras, the Poco X3 Pro rocks a quad-camera system on the rear with a 48MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter and two 2MP sensors. Towards the front, Poco has added a 20MP shooter for capturing selfies. The X3 Pro also has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. This Android 11 laden device is backed by a 5120mAh battery and has support for 33W fast charging. Other features of the Poco X3 Pro include Hi-Res Audio, stereo speakers and it lacks 5G support. Connectivity options on the Poco X3 Pro include 4G LTE, VoLTE, VoWi-Fi, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and a USB Type-C port. Poco X3 Pro: Pricing and AvailabilityInline with Poco’s aggressive pricing strategy, the Poco X3 Pro is also priced very well. The 6GB+128GB variant costs just EUR 249 (approx, Rs 21,600), and the 8GB+256GB variant will retail for EUR 299 (approx. Rs 25,900). The base variant will be available at just EUR 199 (approx. Rs 17,250) till April 1 and that’s an incredible price for a phone with Snapdragon 8 series processor. The X3 Pro can be picked up in three colour options- Blue, Purple and Gold. The first of the phone will begin on March 24. In India, the base variant of the Poco X3 Pro may retail for just Rs 19,999 or even Rs 18,999, considering the only major change between the Poco X3 and X3 Pro is the Snapdragon 860 chipset. |

| You Might Never See New LG Mobiles in Your Hands Again Posted: 22 Mar 2021 04:33 AM PDT
LG, one of the largest consumer electronics brand globally, is also known for developing smartphones. It has brought concept devices such as LG Wing, LG G8X ThinQ with dual-screens and more to India’s market. The company was also in the development stages for its smartphones with a rollable display. But according to a Bloomberg report, that project has been halted by LG. The reason behind that is the company's future. While LG makes a ton of profits through its several products, unfortunately, its smartphones didn't get the same kind of reception from the market as its other products did. Because of that, the company might shut down its smartphone developing and selling business altogether. LG's Future in the Smartphone Industry a Difficult OneLG was initially expected to sell its smartphone business to another company. According to an Ilbo report, a person close to the electronics industry has said that LG will close down its smartphone business instead of selling it. The company was in talks with Vingroup JSC from Vietnam and Volkswagen AG from Germany for selling its mobile business. But it seems like the company couldn't get a deal from either of the companies. That is why, it might sell its smartphone business completely. LG is expected to announce something regarding the same for its employees by as early as April. If the company shuts down its smartphone business, it will mean that you will never be able to see or hold new LG smartphones. LG was expected to launch a number of smartphones in the first half of 2021, but the company has also shelved that plan. It is important to note that LG hasn't confirmed anything about shutting down its smartphone business anytime soon. However, the coming few days should confirm whether the news is true or not. |
| Reliance Jio Will Get Its 5G Gear Locally From Samsung: Report Posted: 22 Mar 2021 03:36 AM PDT
Reliance Jio might get all of its 5G gear locally from Samsung. The South Korean tech giant is likely to apply for the government’s Production Linked (PLI) scheme. For the unaware, the government’s PLI scheme for the telecom sector of about Rs 12,195 crores is to attract and invite foreign manufacturers to set up factories in India and produce locally. According to an ET Telecom report, Samsung might apply for the PLI scheme and manufacture all the 4G/5G gear that Jio needs locally. Further, the company might also look to export it to other nations from India. Samsung Might Produce 4G/5G Gear For Jio in Uttar PradeshSamsung is expected to deliver 4G/5G gear to Reliance Jio, its only telecom customer in India, by manufacturing the products locally in Uttar Pradesh. The South Korean tech giant may also look to export products to its other clients in other nations. Some major companies and manufacturers such as Flex, Cisco, Foxconn, Flex, Nokia, Ericsson, and more have already applied for the PLI scheme to manufacture their products within India. Jio has already said that it will not procure any equipment or gear from outside India for its 5G network. This move would allow the telco in staying true to its commitments. It is worth noting that Samsung has already helped Jio build a strong 4G network pan-India, but that exclusive partnership between the two companies has already ended. Thus, if Samsung wants to be a part of Jio's 5G, it will have to produce within India since Jio will not include any products imported from outside. Even though Samsung is not an Indian company, if it manufactures its products in India, they are 'Made in India' and not purchased from outside the boundaries of the country. The PLI scheme aims to invite more and more manufacturers to produce within India so that the country has to rely less on importing goods from outside. |

| 5G in India Might Have Chinese Presence After All: Report Posted: 22 Mar 2021 12:09 AM PDT
The government is currently in process of creating a list of 'trusted' vendors for supplying core network equipment to the telcos. Chinese companies are seen as a cybersecurity threat by the government. Thus, the government is indirectly asking the telcos to refrain from awarding new contracts to Chinese vendors. June 15, 2021, is slated to be the date from when the telcos would be barred from sourcing any network gear from 'non-trusted vendors. Post the concerned date; the telcos will have to take permission from the government's designated authority for including any of the equipment from non-trusted sources into their networks. Thus, Chinese firms were expected to be absent from the rollout of the 5G network in India. But now, it seems like that might not be the case after all. Chinese Firms Can Come Into the 'Trusted List', If…According to a Livemint report, Chinese vendors such as ZTE and Huawei can become a part of the 'trusted' vendors if they meet the required criteria. The criteria are under preparation by the government. This will mean that they might also be able to provide equipment/gear for 5G networks that roll out in the future. Earlier, 5G's future in India was assumed to be without any Chinese presence after the government started sidelining Chinese firms/vendors. In June 2021, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will announce the list of trusted vendors the telcos can source their equipment from. The government has set the National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC) as the designated body for handling all the matters related to the trusted and non-trusted vendors. Telcos will have to submit their requests for sourcing equipment from non-trusted companies by giving all the details about the vendor and its products to the designated body. They can purchase the equipment only after the authority has approved it. It will be interesting to see whether it is all the European vendors or if Chinese vendors get a chance. |
| Reliance Jio 4G Download Speed Dips for 2 Months Straight, Vi Gains in February: Trai Posted: 21 Mar 2021 10:17 PM PDT
The Trai has updated its ‘MySpeed‘ portal for February 2021. The Trai data says Reliance Jio saw its average 4G download speed decline for the second month in a row. However, it is still the leading operator when it comes to 4G speeds. Reliance Jio achieved an average 4G download speed of 15.4 Mbps, which is down from 17.9 Mbps in January 2021 and 20.2 Mbps in December 2020. Trai still measures the speeds of Vodafone and Idea users separately. During the month, Vodafone achieved an average 4G download speed of 9.2 Mbps, followed by Idea with an 8 Mbps median download speed. Bharti Airtel is last on the list with 7.2 Mbps average speed on the 4G network. Trai MySpeed Data for February 2021: What It SuggestsIn January 2021, Vodafone reported an average download speed of 8.7 Mbps which saw an increase to 9.2 Mbps last month. Ookla has rated Vi as the fastest operator in India, so this data will not surprise many. On the flip side, we have Reliance Jio which is retaining the top spot. Jio’s 4G speeds seem to be coming down lately as the average 4G download speed of the telco got reduced to 15.4 Mbps last month. Talking about the upload speeds on the 4G network, Vodafone is again leading the chart with 7.2 Mbps average upload speed. Idea is second on the list with around 6.4 Mbps average speed, followed by Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio with 4.2 Mbps and 3.6 Mbps median upload speeds, respectively. While the Trai data rated Reliance Jio as the fastest operator in terms of download speeds, other network measuring services like Tutela and Ookla have rated Bharti Airtel as the fastest operator. Earlier this month, in its '2021 State of Mobile Experience’ report, Tutela rated Bharti Airtel as the best telecom operator in India as it won four of the six metrics tested by Tutela. In the same report, Tutela noted that Bharti Airtel achieved an average 4G download speed of 10 Mbps, whereas Vodafone Idea stood on the second spot with 9.6 Mbps speed. Reliance Jio, which according to Trai, is the fastest operator is third on the chart with 6.5 Mbps median speed. |
| OnePlus 9 Series to Run Oppo’s ColorOS in China Posted: 21 Mar 2021 08:57 PM PDT
OnePlus 9 series will boot ColorOS out of the box in China, the company confirmed on social media. Earlier this year, OnePlus and Oppo merged their R&D departments, and this decision could be part of the same. OnePlus’ smartphones run OxygenOS in global markets, whereas in China, they run HydrogenOS. OxygenOS used to be one of the best Android skins, but that has changed over the last couple of years. The OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro will run ColorOS in China. In India and other global markets like the United States and the UK, the phones will still run OxygenOS. This could mean OnePlus will stop developing HydrogenOS in China. This is underwhelming from OnePlus’ side, but it was always coming considering the company’s recent developments. OnePlus to Adopt ColorOS in ChinaOppo recently launched the Find X3 series. Barring the design, the OnePlus 9 devices will feature identical specifications as the Find X3 series. The OnePlus 9 will be a revamped Oppo Find X3 and the OnePlus 9 Pro will be the Find X3 Pro. In China, Google Mobile Services are banned, which is the reason why the company develops HydrogenOS exclusively for mainland China. The Find X3 series run ColorOS 11.2 based on Android 11 in China and the OnePlus 9 series may ship with the same. Since the R&D of Oppo and OnePlus are now merged, the Chinese company decided to ditch HydrogenOS altogether. From a business point of view, it makes complete sense. But from a customer point of view, it doesn’t as HydrogenOS offered a unique experience to the users. Hopefully, OnePlus will not make this change in global markets. OnePlus was heavily criticised last year with its OxygenOS 11 skin because it had a close resemblance to Samsung’s OneUI. This move will panic a lot of OnePlus fans in the global markets. In other news, the OnePlus 9 series will go official tomorrow with flagship specs. In India, the company will be launching three phones- OnePlus 9, OnePlus 9 Pro and the OnePlus 9R. The OnePlus Watch will also make its debut tomorrow in India. The OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro will have 120Hz refresh rate screens, Snapdragon 888 5G SoC, up to 12GB of RAM and a 4500mAh battery. The OnePlus 9R might come with Snapdragon 870 chipset and it is said to be a gaming-centric smartphone. Pricing, availability and official specifications of the products will come out tomorrow. |
