It is convenient to have a screen recording app on your smartphone. Who knows when you might find it useful? There are many screen recording apps that one can find for an iOS device. But little did you know that one amongst all the attractive features that Apple includes in the iPhone is its native screen recording feature that is relatively easy to access. All you need to know is where to find it. Read the article to the end to know how to start using the screen recording feature.

Steps to Use Screen Recording in iPhone

Go to the Settings app on your smartphone, then find the 'control centre' option and tap on it. Go to the 'more controls' section and search for the 'screen recording' menu. Click on the plus (+) icon beside it. This should add the 'screen recording' option in the 'included controls' section. Return back to the home screen on your smartphone and scroll from the right corner of your screen. There you will find the 'quick controls.' Tap on the box with a dot inside, and once you tap on it, the screen recording will start.

iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max Might Come With 120Hz Refresh Rate Display

Apple fans have been dying to see a higher refresh rate display on their new iPhones. Many expected the iPhone 12 series to feature a 120Hz refresh rate display. But to their disappointment, the iPhone 12 series stuck with the standard low 60Hz refresh rate screen.

But the iPhone 13 series might change that. Apple might introduce a 120Hz refresh rate display on the 'Pro' and 'Pro Max' variants of the iPhone 13 series.

According to a report from The Elec, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max will come with a 120Hz LTPO OLED display made by Samsung.

Samsung to Manufacture 120Hz LTPO OLED Display for Apple

Samsung will be making the 120Hz LTPO OLED display for Apple's iPhone 13 series. The report claims that Apple has already made the purchase order for the same.

Samsung will upgrade its OLED panel manufacturing line to LTPO OLED panels very soon. Apple will start receiving the upgraded panels later this year.

Initially, Samsung has committed to providing Apple with 30,000 LTPO OLED panels in a month. After the transition is completed, Samsung will increase the production numbers to 70,000 panels in a month.

If you are wondering if the normal iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini will get at least a 90Hz display panel, to your dissatisfaction, the report claims that they will come with the standard low 60Hz refresh rate panels.

Apple could have used the regular OLED displays with high-refresh rates on the iPhone 12 series, but that would have resulted in serious battery issues for the device.

Since the Cupertino tech giant couldn't receive enough LTPO OLED displays for the iPhone 12 series, it stuck with the low-refresh rate screens.

The Apple iPhone 13 series is expected to launch later this year in September or October with a new generation chipset and more powerful features.

Apple is also expected to launch new products such as iPad Pro 2021 and more in its virtual event slated for April.

Telcos Ask Trai to Avail Millimetre Wave Bands for Making 5G Affordable

Posted: 23 Mar 2021 04:15 AM PDT

trai-millimetre-wave-bands-5g-telcos

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents India’s top three telecom operators (Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea), has asked the regulator to avail millimetre wave bands for the 5G auctions.

COAI director general S.P Kochhar wrote a letter to Anshu Prakash, secretary of Department of Telecommunications (DoT), requesting the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) to "earmark" and include millimetre wave bands in the 5G auctions.

According to an ET Telecom report, the industry body has also asked for confirmations about the quantum of spectrum available and its base price for the 5G auctions.

Millimetre Wave Bands Essential to Keep 5G Services Affordable in India

In his note, Kochhar highlighted the importance of including the millimetre wave bands (26 GHz, 28 GHz, and 37 GHz) for providing 5G services at affordable rates.

He mentioned that after a great deal of effort from the DoT, the International Telecom Union (ITU) recognised the 26 GHz and 28 GHz mmWave bands as essential for the 5G roll out.

It is worth noting that a month ago, the parliamentary panel led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor had asked the government to earmark all the millimetre wave bands essential for the 5G roll out in consultation with Trai.

Trai has only earmarked airwaves in the 3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz spectrum bands for 5G in India. But COAI wants it to reconsider and include the airwaves in the millimetre wave band as well.

Telecom operators want the regulator to allocate 400 units of millimetre wave spectrum to each operator for ensuring an affordable 5G roll out in the country. Without the millimetre wave bands, the cost for deploying 5G will increase multiple folds rendering it unaffordable.

Telcos have expressed that the 26 GHz and 28 GHz spectrum is very important for 5G's business case in India. Without it, all the 5G services would become very expensive.

Nokia 5G Speed Makes World Record Reaching 4.5 Gbps

Nokia's 5G technology during a commercial trial with Turk Telecom made a world record by delivering 4.5 Gbps downloading speeds. The world record of 4.5 Gbps is the first time any 5G New Radio (5GNR) could deliver such a speed.

Turk Telecom, a Turkish operator, leveraged Nokia's AirScale 5G RAN solution on the 26 GHz mmWave spectrum with 800 MHz bandwidth and a single 5G capable device for the trial. Turk Telecom conducted the test in the capital city of Turkey, Ankara.

Nokia's AirScale Base Station was connected to a 5G capable device for transferring data from Turk Telecom's 26 GHz mmWave spectrum at 4.5 Gbps peak speeds.

5G Network to Help Download 4K Videos in Seconds

Turk Telecom chose Nokia to provide the connectivity, capacity required, and ultra-low latency for testing the full range of 5G during the trial.

Looking at the test results, it can be concluded that the 5G network will enable latency-sensitive and high-bandwidth enterprise services.

5G networks will further allow users to see the true potential of artificial intelligence (AI), augmented reality (AR), and virtual reality (VR). It will further help them download big files such as 4K videos in a matter of seconds.

Turk Telecom has displayed how true 5G speeds can help consumers elevate their connectivity experience with this successful trial. But it is worth noting that during the test, only a single device was used.

This means that there was no scope for network congestion. While a commercially launched 5G network will have congestion, it won't be nearly half as bad as 4G.

Chief technology officer at Turk Telecom, Yusuf Kirac, said that these technologies would help the world in developing 'terahertz' systems for providing ultra-high-internet speeds that is planned to be used in 6G.

It is worth noting that Nokia has been a part of nearly 200 5G trials globally. The Finnish tech corporate has played a major role in developing 5G throughout the globe.

Jio to Focus on Subscriber Addition, Tariff Hikes to be Delayed: Report

Posted: 23 Mar 2021 02:00 AM PDT

jio-focus-subscriber-addition

Reliance Jio will keep its focus on adding more subscribers to gain a larger market share instead of going after a higher average revenue per user (ARPU) aggressively.

Jio's tariff hikes are expected to come at a later stage than its peers. The telco might go with a segmented tariff hike strategy to keep its unique selling point (USP) of providing cheaper plans than its competitors.

According to the analysts at Jefferies, smartphone subscribers form 75% of Reliance Jio's total revenues. Thus the operator isn't likely to increase tariffs in a jiffy for its smartphone segment.

Jio also reduced the availability cost of the JioPhone 2021 by 23%-25% to retain its feature phone users coming out of the three-year contracts with the older JioPhone. The note mentioned that for Jio to keep its feature phone users; low-cost smartphones are necessary for users to upgrade from their older JioPhone.

Jio's ARPU Might Increase to Rs 159 by FY23

Jio might go with a segmented strategy for its tariff hikes. Initially, the telco might increase tariffs by 10% in Q4 of FY22 and again the same percentage in Q4 FY23.

With the help of the smartphone segment, Jio might take its ARPU to Rs 159 by FY23. The feature phones won't create a very huge impact on Jio in increasing its ARPU.

The telco's been adding subscribers at a slower rate than ever before because of multiple reasons such as network congestion, tariff hikes in 2019, and more. Since Jio's aim is to reach the milestone of 500 million subscribers soon, it shouldn't increase tariffs with the other telcos to keep attracting subscribers.

During the FY21-FY23 period, Jio is expected to gain up to 76 million subscribers that will take the telco's total subscriber base to 492 million. It will further result in Jio gaining a market share of 40% against its current 35%.

PS5 and PS4 Will Only Have Access to PS Store: Report

Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:00 AM PDT

ps5-ps4-ps-store-access

PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PlayStation 4 (PS4) will only get access to the PS Store starting August this year. Sony will remove access to the PS Store from its older generation consoles and gaming products, including PlayStation 3 (PS3), PlayStation Portable (PSP), and PlayStation Vita (PS Vita).

According to a report from The Gamer, the first devices/consoles to lose access to the PS Store will be PS3 and PSP. PS Store for both devices will be removed by June 2. At the same time, PS Vita will still have access to the PS Store until August 27.

This means that only PS4 and PS5 will get access to the PS Store from August 2021.

Physical Game CDs Might See Rise in Sales

Since the time PS Store started availing games for users to download online via PS Store, physical game CDs saw a major drop in demand.

No one wanted to keep CDs that could be damaged if there was a digital copy alternative available.

Users of PS3, PSP, and PS Vita will still be able to access all their purchased games through the PS Store, but they will not be able to download any new games.

In another news, Sony is offering PS4 and PS5 users multiple games for free under its 'Play at Home Program'.

There are a total of 10 games that will be offered for free to the users. One of the 10 games includes 'Horizon: Zero Down' which will be available by April 22, 2021.

The other 9 games will be available for users to download and own by March 25, 2021. Duly note that these free games will stay for a limited period only. Users who miss out on the opportunity to redeem the free games will have to pay later for owning it.

Sony has also extended the free trial of 'Funimation', a joint venture between Sony Pictures Entertainment and Aniplex.

Discord Might Be Sold to This Tech Giant for Over $10 Billion

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 11:52 PM PDT

discord-sold-to-tech-giant

Discord is a heavily used application by online gamers. It helps them stream live games, chat and coordinate with other gamers in real-time.

According to a Bloomberg report, Discord might be sold to a tech giant for over $10 billion. The tech giant in question is none other than Microsoft that invests heavily in new technologies and applications.

Microsoft and Discord are currently in the negotiation stages. If the deal strikes through, Microsoft may buy discord for over $10 billion.

Discord's Rising Popularity

Discord has over 250 million registered users to date. The application was initially built for gamers. It is now used for different purposes and by people in different fields such as YouTube, podcasts, and more.

Since the time pandemic arrived, demand for online gaming and gaming related applications/platforms grew multiple folds. This is one of the reasons for the rapid growth of Discord in the last year.

As per a report from NPD, a research group, spendings on video games by gamers increased to a record $11.2 billion during the third quarter of 2020.

If the deal goes through, it should be a good purchase for Microsoft, given the future of online/video gaming. The gaming industry has barely scratched the surface of its true potential.

It will also be a good thing for the future of Discord since the platform/application will be able to get a great deal of resources from a tech giant such as Microsoft.

Nothing's confirmed as of now since the companies are still in the negotiating stages. Mega corporates such as Amazon and Epic Games are a few of the companies that have talked with Discord regarding buying the platform.

Discord made over $130 million last year in revenues. During the last funding round in December, the company was valued at $7 billion. It is worth noting that the company still isn't profitable, meaning it needs the cash inflow, and thus the deal with Microsoft might go through.

Government Asks WhatsApp to Assign Alpha-Numeric Hash to Messages for Tracing the Origin

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 10:13 PM PDT

Indian Government Asks WhatsApp to Trace the Origin of Messages

The Indian government has reportedly asked popular instant messaging platform WhatsApp to introduce an alpha-numeric hash assigning system for every message. As everyone might be aware by now, WhatsApp is the epicentre of spam messages, and the government is worried about the misleading information spread through WhatsApp. In the past, top-level government executives and WhatsApp officials engaged in multiple talks of how to trace the origin of spam messages. But the Facebook-owned company did not budge because of end-to-end encryption. Every WhatsApp message is encrypted and it urged that tracing the origin of a message will require the breaking of end-to-end encryption technology. This is why the Indian government has come up with an alternate solution, according to ET Tech.

Alpha-Numeric Hash Assigning System on WhatsApp: What Exactly Is It?

Going by the ET Tech report, the Indian government is proposing a new system through which the platform can trace the origin of messages without breaking end-to-end encryption technology. The new system is an ‘alpha-numeric hash.’ Basically, the government is asking WhatsApp to generate a unique alpha-numeric hash key for every message sent on the platform. If WhatsApp implements the proposed system, every message sent on the platform will generate a unique hash key containing letters from A to Z and numbers from 0 to 9. For example, if you send a message on WhatsApp, it will have an alpha-numeric hash key of ‘1a2b3c.’

Since these hash keys will be unique for every message, it will allow the company to trace the origin. With this system, WhatsApp will not be required to break the encryption technology.

Aforesaid, WhatsApp declined the government’s request of tracing the origin of a message, saying it will be against the privacy policies. However, the government urged that it is part of "law and order" and also asked WhatsApp to comply with the requirement.

Having said that, WhatsApp is yet to inform the government about its stance on generating alpha-numeric hash keys for messages.

BSNL Employee Group Asks PM Modi to Hasten the Launch of 4G Services

Posted: 22 Mar 2021 08:52 PM PDT

BSNL 4G Launch Expected Soon

BSNL Employee Group is now looking for intervention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi to speed up the delayed revival process of the state-run telecom operator. In a written letter to PM Modi, the employee group of BSNL asked to hasten the launch of 4G services in India alongside speeding up assets’ monetisation. The Union Cabinet announced a massive revival package worth around Rs 70,000 crore in 2019, but the process is moving at a snail pace, which is irking the BSNL employees and employee groups. Everyone expected BSNL to launch 4G services right after the revival package’s approval, but that didn’t happen. As part of the revival package, BSNL floated 4G tenders, but disputes with DoT on multiple aspects forced the delay.

BSNL Employee Group Asks PM Modi Office to Upgrade 49,300 Base Transceiver Stations

BSNL struggles to compete with private telcos- Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea due to the lack of 4G services. As private telcos continue to invest heavily in improving 4G coverage and 4G speeds, BSNL users still use 3G services and the data speeds are miles behind the 4G speeds offered by the rival telecom operators.

K. Sebastin, general secretary of the Sanchar Nigam Executives Association (SNEA), in the letter to PM Modi, said the revival plan is being delayed because of the 4G services launch and “delay in land monetisation and clearing the debts.” Furthermore, the BSNL Employee Group asked the government to direct the telco to upgrade 49,300 base transceiver stations. The upgradation of existing towers will cost around Rs 5,100 crore and the employee group says it is the cheapest and best way to roll out commercial 4G services. This news is reported by ET Telecom.

As noted, BSNL is facing differences with DoT on floating 4G tender. The government is asking the telco to go with locally-made 4G gear, whereas BSNL believes it should go with foreign players like Ericsson or Nokia. In the past, BSNL cited that gear from local manufacturers may pose challenges in the future and also highlighted that a 4G tender from local vendors is double the price of global telecom gear makers.

On the one hand, we have the Indian government, which is aggressively pushing for the Atmanirbhar Bharat campaign. On the other hand, we have BSNL which is opposing the move on the back of several factors like differences in tender prices and never used equipment.
