Posted: 24 Mar 2021 08:56 AM PDT

Realme 8 With 64MP Quad-Camera System

Realme 8 series of phones are now official in India to take on the Redmi Note 10 devices. Realme has launched two phones in the country today, namely, the Realme 8 and the Realme 8 Pro. Both the phones feature very similar specs to their predecessors- Realme 7 and the Realme 7 Pro, but the company has made some additions alongside reducing the premium model’s price to Rs 17,999. The Realme 8 Pro is priced at Rs 17,999 for the base variant and it offers a 108MP primary camera on the back, much like the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max. The Realme 8, on the other hand, has MediaTek Helio G95 SoC, 64MP quad-camera setup and a 5000mAh battery, and it starts at Rs 14,999. Realme also said the 5G variants of the Realme 8 series are in the final stages of testing, hinting at an imminent launch.

Realme 8: Specifications and Features

Starting with the Realme 8, the company has added a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen on the front with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels and a 90.8% screen-to-body ratio. Sadly, Realme did not add high refresh rate to keep the price below Rs 15,000. At the heart of the phone, there’s the MediaTek Helio G95 SoC which also powered the Realme 7. The phone comes in three configurations with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. Users can also expand the storage via the microSD card slot.

Talking about the cameras, the Realme 8 sports a quad-camera system on the rear with 64MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, 2MP macro lens and a 2MP monochrome sensor. The phone rocks a 16MP selfie snapper.

Connectivity options on the Realme 8 include 4G LTE, VoLTE, VoWi-Fi, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.1, GPS and a USB Type-C port. The Realme 8 runs Android 11-based RealmeUI out of the box, and it is backed by a 5000mAh battery with 30W fast charging. The phone also has an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Realme 8 Pro: Specifications and Features

Moving onto the Realme 8 Pro, it also comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ AMOLED screen with the same 1080×2400 pixels resolution. Again, there’s no high refresh rate support, but the screen supports 180Hz touch-sampling rate. Unlike the Realme 8 which has a MediaTek chipset, the Realme 8 Pro is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chipset, paired with up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The phone weighs just 176 grams and has a thickness of 8.1mm.

The Realme 8 Pro’s USP is the 108MP quad-camera system on the back. A 108MP primary lens works in tandem with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle shooter, 2MP macro shooter and a 2MP monochrome sensor. Towards the front, there’s the same 16MP shooter that helps in capturing selfies and attending video calls.

Realme 8 Pro With 108MP Quad-Camera System

Other features include an in-display fingerprint scanner, dual-band Wi-Fi, DC Dimming functionality and 4K video recording at 30fps. Unlike the Realme 8, the Realme 8 Pro has a 4500mAh battery and the company is bundling a 65W charger inside the retail box.

Realme 8 Series Pricing in India Detailed

The Realme 8 comes in three variants and two colour options- Cyber Silver and Cyber Black. The base variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage is priced at Rs 14,999, followed by the 6GB+128GB variant at Rs 15,999 and the premium model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage will retail for Rs 16,999. 5G Will Change The Future of Online Mobile Gaming

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 06:00 AM PDT

5g-future-online-mobile-gaming

5G networks will soon sweep over the world, and they will transform our technology and future into something we can't even comprehend at the moment. One area 5G will majorly help with is online mobile gaming.

Online mobile gaming requires a network with very high bandwidth and ultra-low-latency to deliver a decent experience to the user. How will 5G help in regards to this?

Well, 5G can deliver both the requirements and even more. Right now, most of the processing of the game data is done locally on your device. An alternative to this is using a cloud server to process the data and then send it back to the device.

But there is an issue with this. Mostly, the centres for processing the game data are located at far off locations meaning if the user's network is not good enough, the time taken by the information to reach the data centre, get processed, and return to the device will ruin the gaming experience for the user.

With the current generation networks, it is almost impossible for the users to get a good gaming experience if a cloud server is used to process game data. That is why data processing is mostly done locally on the device.

However, with 5G, it stands to change forever. A 5G network will enable lightning-quick data processing, ensuring that the time take is minimal for processing the data in a cloud server.

It would further mean that the servers won't have to synchronise a lot of individual devices. Instead, all the data can be processed in the cloud server, and all the calculations can run on the same machine ensuring data synchronisation of different mobile devices is done rapidly and easily.

Multiplayer online games would become a treat to play then.

But this is not all that 5G will enhance for the online mobile gaming world. It will also improve the viewing experience for the audience.

Since the time online gaming has arrived in mobile, the rise of streamers on different platforms such as YouTubers, Twitch, and more is evident. With a 5G network, users will be able to seamlessly stream competitions, tournaments, and games in real-time in the highest quality possible.

Streamers would also be able to stream on different screens with the same network without facing any issues of lags.

Vodafone Idea Requires Steep Tariff Hikes for Survival, Huge Hikes Unlikely for Now

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 05:08 AM PDT

steep-tariff-hike-only-viable-option-vi
Vodafone Idea, the third largest wireless operator in India on Monday hiked its two entry-level postpaid family plans by around Rs 50. The operator on its website highlighted that the base postpaid family plan has been hiked from Rs 598 to Rs 649. Further, the third largest operator in India also hiked its second-tier postpaid family plan from Rs 749 to Rs 799. The operator had earlier restricted the price hike on its two entry-level postpaid family plans to five circles namely Uttar Pradesh East, Tamil Nadu including Chennai, Kolkata, Maharashtra and Goa. Global research firm CLSA on Tuesday said that the 7% to 9% tariff hike on the two entry-level plans will result in a 1% marginal increase in revenues for Vodafone Idea.

Steep Tariff Hikes Unlikely for Vodafone Idea Says Analyst

CLSA said that the Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel postpaid tariffs are already at an 25% premium to Reliance Jio, the largest wireless operator in the country. However, the firm said that the growth in average revenue per user (ARPU) provides opportunities for all the three major telecom operators in India.

Crucially, CLSA said that it sees the sector revenue to hit US$32 billion by 2023, largely driven by the hike in tariffs coupled with the increased data usage.

It has to be noted that Vodafone Idea offers five postpaid family plans priced at Rs 948, Rs 999 and Rs 1348 along with the now revised Rs 649 and the Rs 799 plans. Additionally, the operator also offers seven single user postpaid plans including the Rs 1099, the RedX plan.

Reliance Securities, the broking arm of Reliance Capital on March 16, 2021, said in a report that Vodafone Idea needs a "steep tariff hike" by the end of the 2023 financial year to "survive." The firm highlighted that the operator paid 13% of its total adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. Further, Reliance Securities said that Vodafone Idea needs around Rs 60 billion per year largely for maintenance and for a 10% interest on its overall debt and to cover spectrum dues.

"Tariff hike in the current environment seems unlikely at least till all private players decide to raise tariff," Reliance Securities said in its report. "Given the competitive environment with a weak third player, there is a need for tariff hike to restore health of the sector, but it remains to be seen who would take the initiative in this regard."

Analyst Says Capital Infusion Will Not Save Vodafone Idea

Crucially, Reliance Securities highlighted that the third largest wireless operator in India will "continue to burn cash" each quarter without a hike in its tariffs.

"Capital infusion alone without steep tariff hike is unlikely to ensure sustainability of VI's operation," Reliance Securities said. "However, only a significant and sustainable increase in ARPU can help VI to survive in the long-term."

In early March, reports said that Vodafone Idea was unable to sign a binding agreement with Oak Hill consortium due to unresolved issues. The two sides were engaged in discussions for months with the exclusive period for talks extended from January 30, 2021 to February 28, 2021. In mid-March, it was said that Vodafone Idea was in talks with a new set of US based investors.

Reliance Securities said that the low capital expenditure set by Vodafone Idea is "triggering subscriber loss" while a "singular tariff hike could lead to substantial subscriber loss." The firm said that the subscriber loss witnessed by Vodafone Idea is largely due to the “weak network capabilities and speculation around business continuity."

Meanwhile, Reliance Securities also highlighted that the "affordable" smartphone set to be unveiled by Reliance Jio in partnership with Google will result in the largest wireless operator welcoming more users from its rivals.

"Jio in association with Google is expected to launch its affordable low-range 4G and 5G phones in India," Reliance Securities said. "It plans to manufacture 200mn entry-level smartphones in the next two years. Apart from [the] Android operating system and Play Store, these phones will include cheap data packs."

Reliance Securities said that around 293.6 million non-data users of Vodafone Idea and Airtel can get "easily attracted" to the low cost smartphones from Jio.

Satellite Broadband Won’t Create Problems For Fixed Line Broadband: Report

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 04:26 AM PDT

satellite-broadband-problems-fixed-line

It is not long before you will start seeing satellite broadband services provided in your area. Two major companies, Bharti owned OneWeb, and Elon Musk's Starlink, are eyeing to enter the Indian landscape with satellite broadband services next year.

But it might not receive the kind of attention and response fixed-line broadband services do currently. The reason is because of its price. In India, the 4G penetration level has reached 63% already, and 5G is on its way.

Satellite internet is expected to be much costlier than both the mobile calling and data plans along with the fixed-line broadband connections. Since Indians are used to paying the cheapest 4G data rates in the world, they won't be too willing to pay for satellite broadband if its plans are costly.

Satellite Broadband Will Face Hardships to Grow in India

The analysts believe that it isn't just the steep pricing but other additional factors that can pose a problem for satellite broadband in India.

First of all, there are regulatory risks since to provide satellite internet services; final regulations are still yet to come from the government. This might result in delays in the launch of the service.

BNP Paribas, senior telecom analyst Kunal Vora, said satellite broadband would remain as a 'niche offering' in the medium term. It won't be a threat or an issue for the telecom operators in the country for the foreseeable future.

Since mobile internet is the cheapest in India globally, people will continue to purchase mobile plans they can get for cheap instead of the satellite broadband plans, which are expected to be much costlier.

Satellite broadband will help people who are travelling or setting up businesses in India’s rural or dark connectivity areas where the 4G network is either absent or not good enough to get a stable internet connection.

Starlink is already offering Indians a chance to prebook a satellite internet connection kit by paying $99 in advance. The company has said that it will start providing internet coverage in India by 2022.

Reliance Jio Allotted Fresh MSC Codes to Meet Increasing Demand

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 03:10 AM PDT

reliance-jio-fresh-msc-codes

Reliance Jio, India's number one telecom operator, has recently been allotted fresh ACCESS-MSC codes by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to meet the increasing demand for mobile services.

For the unaware, MSC code is the first five digits of your mobile number. The DoT allots MSC codes to the operators who then use them for providing telecom services. Since these are limited resources, whenever an operator faces a shortage of MSC codes to provide new mobile numbers to the users, DoT allots the operator fresh MSC codes upon request.

The telecom department allots these codes on a regional or circle basis to the operators.

Reliance Jio Allotted 93290-93299 ACCESS MSC Code

DoT has recently allotted Reliance Jio fresh ACCESS-MSC codes to help the telco meet the demand for services from 1 million users in the Madhya Pradesh (MP) circle.

Jio has been allocated 93290-93299 ACCESS-MSC code by the telecom department. The telco had made a request for the same to meet the increasing demand for services from the state.

DoT has directed the telco to not use the numbering series for the active subscribers of Reliance Communications, Reliance Telecom and other port-out users.

It is worth noting that it hasn't been long since DoT allocated fresh MSC codes to Jio for the Gujarat circle. ACCESS-MSC codes – 78610, 78628-78630, 78618-78620, 78638, 78598-78599, were allotted to the telco for the Gujarat circle.

The new MSC codes allotted to the telco will help it in issuing fresh mobile numbers to the new users that want to purchase the services of the telco. The recent issue of MSC-Code was to specifically help with meeting the rising demand for mobile services in the MP circle.

According to the DoT circular, the fresh MSC code will help Reliance Jio in catering to and fulfilling the demands of 1 million users in MP seeking new mobile numbers.

Android Gaming Console in Works by Qualcomm: Report

Posted: 24 Mar 2021 01:09 AM PDT

android-gaming-console-by-qualcomm

Demand for video games increased multiple folds in the last year due to pandemic. The second-half of 2020 saw new generation gaming consoles coming to the market, such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and more.

Now, according to an IANS report, even Qualcomm, a semi-conductor manufacturing giant, is working on its own gaming console that might launch in the near future. The console is said to be powered by Android and similar to that of Nintendo Switch.

Android Police report suggests that the gaming console from Qualcomm will come with detachable controllers. It is worth noting that Nintendo's handheld console also comes with detachable Joycons.

Expected Pricing for the Qualcomm Gaming Console

The gaming console from Qualcomm is expected to be priced in the $300 range (approximately Rs 22,000).

The Qualcomm gaming console is expected to come with the company's Quick Charge Technology and feature a large 6,000mAh battery.

Qualcomm is said to be using premium parts and supplies for manufacturing and designing the gamepads. Each side of the console is expected to feature a detachable controller.

The gaming console is expected to be running on the custom version of Android 12 specially built for the device. It is rumoured that Qualcomm is working with a very reputable name in the controller industry to design and manufacture its products.

If it is true, and Qualcomm's gaming console is like the Nintendo Switch, it might also support playing the video output on external monitors such as TVs or computer screens.

Heavy demand for Nintendo Switch made it the most sold gaming console of 2020 in the US, both in terms of dollars and units. Out of the 20 top-selling games of 2020, half of them were published by Nintendo.

If Qualcomm can create, design, and manufacture a better console than Nintendo, it will be a true revolution for the console market.

OnePlus 9R in Lake Blue Colour

OnePlus 9R went official in India yesterday at a starting price of Rs 39,999. The 2021 OnePlus flagships are the costlier ones launched to date, with the standard OnePlus 9 retailing for Rs 49,999, something no one expected. To make up for the price hike of standard OnePlus 9 and OnePlus 9 Pro, OnePlus launched an affordable flagship smartphone called ‘OnePlus 9R.’ Starting at Rs 39,999, the OnePlus 9R boasts similar specifications as the OnePlus 8T that was launched in September 2020. Considering just the price, you can say the OnePlus 9R will feature identical specs to the OnePlus 8T, and you’re not wrong. Starting from the dimensions to the battery capacity, the OnePlus 9R is identical to the OnePlus 8T, barring few changes- the processor and the design. Continue reading to know the differences between the OnePlus 9R and the OnePlus 8T.

OnePlus 8T vs OnePlus 9R: What’s Common

Both the phones measure 8.4mm thick and weigh 184 grams, and even boast exact dimensions. They sport a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 1080×2400 pixels, 402 PPI, 120Hz refresh rate and support sRGB. They come in two configurations- 8GB+128GB and 12GB+256GB, and there’s no microSD card slot for storage expansion on both phones.

OnePlus has added Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS) on the 8T and 9R. Towards the front, there’s the 16MP Sony IMX471 sensor.

Thanks to the addition of AMOLED screens, OnePlus managed to add an in-display fingerprint scanner on both the OnePlus 8T and OnePlus 9R. Lastly, they have a 4500mAh battery unit that charges at 65W speeds. Both the phones run Android 11-based OxygenOS 11 out of the box.

OnePlus 8T vs OnePlus 9R: What’s Different

After removing the ZEE5 Premium subscription benefit from its postpaid plans, Vi has added the same OTT app membership to the Rs 1,197 prepaid plan. With this revision, Vodafone Idea is now shipping free ZEE5 Premium membership with the prepaid plans of Rs 355, Rs 405, Rs 595, Rs 795, Rs 1,197 and Rs 2,595. The Rs 1,197 is a unique offering from the telco because of its 180 days validity and a very decent 1.5GB daily data benefit. Other benefits of the plan include unlimited voice calls, weekend data rollover, unlimited night data and 100 SMSes per day. As you already know, Vi provides free access to its Vi Movies & TV app with every prepaid plan.

Vodafone Idea Rs 1,197 Prepaid Plan: Check New Benefits

Introduced back in October 2019, Vi’s Rs 1,197 prepaid plan was then limited to just ‘Home Credit’ users. To recall, Vodafone Idea partnered with Home Credit and offered smartphones worth less than Rs 10,000 at a down payment of Rs 799 along with the Rs 1,197 plan that offered benefits for six months or 180 days. Later at the end of 2020, Vi revised the plan and made it available to every prepaid subscriber.

Now, it has revised the plan again by adding the ZEE5 Premium subscription benefit to the table. Complete benefits of the Rs 1,197 prepaid recharge include unlimited voice calls to any network within India, 1.5GB data per day, 100 SMSes per day, ZEE5 Premium access for one year, unlimited night data between 12 AM and 6 AM, weekend data rollover facility and free access to Vi Movies & TV application.

The validity of the plan remains unchanged at 180 days, which is a really good thing. A lot of prepaid customers (especially those who just want their phone number to be active) are looking out for long-term plans, and the recharges such as Rs 1,197 and Rs 1,499 serve their purpose.

On top of that, Vi is offering additional perks like unlimited night data and weekend data rollover facility with the Rs 1,197 recharge. With the weekend data rollover benefit, subscribers can save their data from Monday to Friday and consume it at one go during the weekends- Saturday and Sunday. This offer is perfect for those who work a lot during weekdays and want to catch up on some TV shows or movies on Netflix or Amazon Prime during weekends. With the addition of the ZEE5 Premium subscription, Vi is making an already enticing plan even more effective.
