| Why Internet Exchange Points Are Important for a Developing Country Like India Posted: 25 Mar 2021 09:03 AM PDT
Owing to the unprecedented times, India underwent a strict nation-wide lockdown. The inability of free-flow of movement suddenly forced people to resort to the Internet for collaboration for work, education and entertainment. This resulted in a sudden spike in internet traffic due to an increase in data consumption leading to the problem of bandwidth inefficiency. This unforeseen rise in consumption posed a grave challenge for the Indian telecom sector as their infrastructure wasn't equipped to handle the situation. A recent report by CISCO stated that India would have more than 900 million internet users by 2023, and a parallel study conducted by Ericsson shared that the average smartphone user in June 2020 consumed 25GB of data per month. Despite India being one of the largest content consumers and also making a noticeable contribution in the content creation community, only a fraction of Indian households have proper broadband accessibility and clock an average download speed of 12.07 Mbps. The introduction and speedy adoption of Internet Exchange Points is one of the more efficient and long-term solutions to address the persistent bandwidth woes, infrastructure-related incompetencies while significantly enhancing customer experience. A fundamental characteristic of Internet Exchange Points (IXP) is to increase broadband speed and reduce lag due to congestion caused by numerous data links. These IXPs enable direct access to content providers like Netflix, Google, Amazon to India's leading internet service providers, thus reducing latency by multi-folds. Players like Extreme IX offload Internet traffic from expensive upstream to peering, which makes the network less congested and affordable for ISPs resulting in cheaper wireline broadband plans for the consumers. IXPs also help solve data traffic congestion issues. Additionally, with the corporate culture gradually accepting remote working as a norm, people from metro cities have relocated to tier 2 and tier 3 cities which currently lack the ability to handle the increased data load. There, a Point of Presence from players like Extreme IX can improve the consumer experience while reducing internet bandwidth-related issues. India is consuming a considerable amount of data, hence it becomes crucial to understand the dire need for the speedy deployment of IXPs. They don't just increase the broadband speed for ISPs, but they also provide a platform that allows for more affordable plans while reducing the number of data links that increase the speed. The government of India, as well as private entities, need to invest and understand the need for IXPs to mend the efficiency gap created by data links bottlenecks leading to inconsistent internet speed. | OneWeb Launches 36 New Satellites With Arianespace Posted: 25 Mar 2021 05:39 AM PDT
OneWeb has just launched 36 new satellites with the help of Arianespace, a European commercial space transportation company. This is OneWeb's second step towards its five-launch programme, where it aims to cover all regions north of 50 degrees latitude by the half of 2021. OneWeb is eyeing to start providing its services by the end of 2021. This was an important launch for the company since this will allow it to stay on track with its goals. It is worth noting that this is just the second launch by OneWeb after the company got bought by new owners. OneWeb Eyeing to Launch Services in India by 2022For the unaware, OneWeb is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite communications company that wants to provide satellite broadband services across the globe. It got acquired by the Bharti group and the UK government just when it was about to shut down its operations because of weak financials. These 36 satellites are a small part of OneWeb's goal of launching over 648 LEO satellites across the globe that will deliver high-speed broadband internet with low-latency to the users. With the launch of these 36 satellites, OneWeb now has a total of 146 satellites orbiting the lower atmosphere of the Earth. OneWeb's CEO, Neil Masterson, said that the next launch of new satellites for the company is scheduled for April this year. OneWeb wants to initially cover the northern hemisphere with locations such as Northern Europe, Alaska, United Kingdom, Iceland, Greenland, Canada, and the Arctic Seas. By the year 2022, OneWeb plans to not only reach India but also provide satellite broadband connectivity globally. Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti group, has already expressed the satellite broadband company’s plans to provide services in India. OneWeb will be competing with Elon Musk's Starlink, another satellite broadband company not only in India but around the globe. Starlink is already allowing users in India to pre-book a connection by paying $99 and promising that they will get services from 2022. |
| Huawei Unlikely to Supply 5G Gear in India: Report Posted: 25 Mar 2021 04:22 AM PDT
Huawei, one of the Chinese vendors that played a major role in supplying network gear/parts to the telcos in India for building their 4G network, might be absent from the 5G roll out. Earlier this week, we reported that Chinese vendors such as Huawei and ZTE might be included in India's list of trusted vendors for supplying network equipment for 5G. But that might not be the case after all. According to an ET report, India is unlikely to include Huawei in its list of trusted companies. The Chinese vendor had a chance to make it to the trusted list if it fulfilled all the criteria listed by the government. Security Concerns to Keep Huawei Away from India's 5G Roll OutYet again, sources close to the matter believe that because of the 'security concerns', Huawei might not be included in the list of trusted vendors to supply network equipment by the Indian government. Huawei has faced multiple allegations and accusations across the world with respect to security concerns. Many countries believe that Huawei has internal ties with the Chinese government. On top of this, the current border tensions between India and China have further escalated the company’s problems. The Indian government is wary of the privacy concerns that arise if Huawei or, for that matter, any other Chinese vendor or untrusted vendor is allowed to supply core network equipment to the telcos. The Indian government has handed National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC) the task of creating a list of 'trusted vendors' that the telcos can source their equipment from. Further, whenever telcos want to purchase equipment from any vendor not present in the trusted list, they will have to cite a reason for the same and seek permission from NCSC before moving ahead with the deal or transaction. This will be good news for all the European vendors that are in the trusted eyes of the government since they will have a much bigger chunk of business available for themselves now. |

| 5G Can be Rolled Out Using the Spectrum Sold in Recent Auctions: Dhotre Posted: 24 Mar 2021 11:07 PM PDT
5G roll out in India has been delayed due to a number of factors, bad planning from the government being one. One of the major reasons why 5G has not launched in the country yet is the unavailability of the dedicated 5G spectrum. As per a PTI report, Sanjay Dhotre, Minister of State for Communications, said, the telcos can use the spectrum purchased in the recently held auctions for rolling out 5G. It is worth noting that the spectrum bands put into the auction by the government were all considered as apt for providing 4G services. The dedicated 5G spectrum in the 3300-3600 MHz band was not included in the auctions. Bharti Airtel Has Already Tested 5G in the 1800 MHz Spectrum BandFor the unaware, Airtel has already demonstrated a successful 5G test using the dynamic spectrum sharing technology in Hyderabad. The telco used the 1800 MHz liberalised spectrum band for the test during February. Airtel said that it could provide 5G services using sub-GHz bands (800/900 MHz) and neutral mid-bands (1800/2100/2300 MHz). However, it is worth considering if that would be enough to unleash the true potential of 5G in India. The telcos haven't even tested 5G with the 3300-3600 MHz band because of spectrum unavailability. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) might conduct the 5G spectrum auctions later this year. But until then, telcos have no other option but to wait and keep improving their technology for upgrading rapidly to 5G as soon as the dedicated spectrum is available. Will the telcos pay heed to the words of Dhotre and go with a soft-launch of 5G in the metro cities using their current spectrum portfolio? However unlikely that may sound, it remains to be seen. |

Taking on the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max, Realme launched the Realme 8 Pro yesterday at a starting price of Rs 17,999. The Redmi Note 10 Pro Max features some brilliant specs on paper like the 120Hz AMOLED screen, 108MP primary sensor on the rear, Snapdragon 732G SoC and 33W fast charging. The Realme 8 Pro, on the other hand, is just the Realme 7 Pro with a 108MP camera on the back and a downgraded fast-charging system. The Note 10 Pro Max and the Realme 8 Pro are the only phones under Rs 20,000 to feature a 108MP camera system. Both the phones differ a lot on the paper and to stay ahead of Xiaomi, Realme priced the 8 Pro a Rs 1,000 less than the Note 10 Pro Max. But does the Rs 1,000 price difference justifies? Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max SpecificationsTalking about the Redmi Note 10 Pro Max first, it comes in three colour options- Vintage Bronze, Glacial Blue and Dark Night. Towards the front, there’s a 6.67-inch Full HD+ (1080×2400 pixels) Super AMOLED display and 120Hz refresh rate. The screen can get up to 1200 nits bright and it supports HDR10. The screen is also protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5 technology. This phone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 732G chipset, paired with 6GB/8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage. There’s a microSD card slot as well for storage expansion. The phone boots Android 11-based MIUI 12 out of the box. However, the company said it would bundle a 65W Super Dart charger inside the retail box. This phone also boots Android 11 out of the box. Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max: Where It ExcelsThe Redmi Note 10 Pro Max is the best smartphone when compared to the Realme 8 Pro. Not only it sports a high refresh screen, it is actually a Super AMOLED display, something we never saw in this price range. While Realme managed to add a Super AMOLED display, the company couldn’t add a high refresh rate. Also, the Note 10 Pro Max looks better than the Realme 8 Pro. The 5MP macro sensor is also proven to be the best in this segment. Lastly, the Note 10 Pro Max features a bigger 5020mAh battery. Realme 8 Pro: Where It ExcelsTalking about the Realme 8 Pro, it excels in two departments. Instead of offering a high refresh rate screen, Realme has included an in-display fingerprint scanner. The 50W fast charger and the 65W charger bundled inside the retail box is another bonus for those who purchase the Realme 8 Pro. Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 Pro Max vs Realme 8 Pro: Which One Should You BuyThe Note 10 Pro Max is priced at Rs 18,999 for the base variant and it completes justifies the asking price. The Realme 8 Pro has some decent features on board, but in 2021, users are included towards phones with high refresh rate screens. |
