Xiaomi has rolled out its first-ever foldable phone, Mi Mix Fold, to compete with Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2. Mi Mix Fold is part of the Mi Mix series that has a reputation of bringing concept devices that showcase the innovative efforts of the company, such as the original Mi MIX and Mi Mix Alpha.

However, the Mi Mix Fold is designed to be marketed as a commercial device which is clear from its foldable design, which automatically makes it a competitor of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2.

Mi Mix Fold will be the first phone showcasing imaging chip Surge C1 image signal processor (ISP) and liquid lens technology. Details about price and specifications are mentioned below.

Mi Mix Fold Specifications

The company has claimed that Mi Mix Fold underwent 2,00,000 bends in reliability testing and up to a million bends in extreme reliability, which makes the handset quite durable.

The Mi Mix Fold is being offered with a primary screen of an 8.01-inch WQHD+ Flexible OLED display. It can support a maximum brightness of up to 900 nits and offers a 4:3 aspect ratio with a 60Hz refresh rate.

The outside screen is being offered with a 6.5-inch AMOLED display with 840×2,520 pixels resolution, 27:9 aspect ratio, and 700 nits of peak brightness with a 90Hz refresh rate support.

Moreover, it also has the DCI-P3 colour gamut and 4,300,000:1 colour contrast ratio. The screen comes with Dolby Vision and HDR10+ certifications and is therefore capable of doubling the resolution of pictures and videos to 1440p, making them very high in quality.

The Mi Mix Fold is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 soC that comes along with 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The smartphone has an excellent butterfly-type cooling system that provides liquid cooling, thermal gel, and multi-level graphite sheets and many such heat diffusion methods.

The Mi Fold comes with a triple rear camera setup that sports a 108MP Samsung HM2 sensor with liquid lens technology, an 8MP secondary sensor and a 13MP sensor with an f/2.4 ultra-wide-angle lens. The 20-megapixel selfie camera sensor completes the camera setup of the Mi Mix Fold.

The dual cell 5,020mAh battery on the Mi Mix Fold supports 67W fast charging. It is said that it can charge the phone fully in 37 minutes. Xiaomi has also provided quad speakers that are tuned by Harman Kardon and are powered by Xiaomi’s quad-speaker algorithm, which has been professed to bring 3D spatial auto field playback.

The foldable handset also comes with a Corning Gorilla Glass protection on behind with a ceramic texture. The Mi Mix Fold comes with a ceramic special edition that comes with a gold middle frame and volume buttons with the black ceramic back with the laser engraving.

The Mi Mix Fold runs on MIUI 12 based on Android 10, which comes with a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. The Mi Mix Fold supports connectivity standards such as 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth and a USB Type-C port.

Xiaomi has used a U-Shaped hinge design on Mi Mix fold that can be folded inwards. The standard version of the Mi Mix fold weighs 317 grams, while the Ceramic Special edition weighs 332 grams. The Mi Mix Fold, when unfolded, measures about 173.27×133.38×7.62mm and 173.27×69.8×17.2mm when unfolded.

Apple WWDC 2021 Event Slated for June 7, What to Expect

The American tech giant Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) will be commencing from June 7 and will end on June 11, 2021. It used to be a physical offline event, but since 2020 and the arrival pandemic, Apple is going ahead with the digital events route.

It is only fair that this year as well, Apple holds the WWDC event online because of the rising number of cases every day in the USA. The WWDC in the past was recognised as a huge event wherein all the well-known developers and media used to gather in Cupertino, California.

What can be expected from the Apple WWDC 2021 Event?

Last year's virtual conference had shaken everyone due to the big announcements that Apple had made. Apple announced the iOS 14 with a revamped home-screen, iPadOS 14, macOS Big Sur, watchOS 7 and other updates at the World Wide Developers Conference.

The talk of the entire tech world was the announcement of Apple’s move to attaining its monopolistic roots through launching their ARM-based chipset for their Mac computers!

Now we all know that Apple was using Intel-powered chips previously for its Macs. Later in 2020, Apple officially announced the new range of MacBooks powered by the M1 chipset, Apple’s first ARM processor.

Although Apple doesn’t have a reputation for announcing new hardware at WWDC but the fact that they have announced the Mac Pro at the WWDC makes us quite dicy.

Apple is expected to hold another event next month for launching new products such as iPad Pro 2021, Apple AirTags, and more.

There is a possibility of the updated iMacs coming in all-new designs with the Apple Silicon under the hood.

According to the company, the WWDC 2021 will include a keynote and State of Union events, online sessions, 1:1 labs for developers, and more.

There is no clarity on what announcement can exactly be expected at Apple’s Keynote address which will be hosted by the CEO Tim Cook himself. But typically, the company announces new versions of iOs, macOS, WatchOS, tvOS and the iPadOS.

BSNL Fresh 4G Tender Approved by ETG: Report

Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:00 AM PDT

bsnl-4g-tender-approved-etg

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) has been approved by the Empowered Technology Group (ETG) to issue a fresh tender inviting global vendors to upgrade 57,000 of its sites to make them 4G compatible.

Finnish vendor Nokia along with Ericsson and Samsung, are expected to participate in the tender process of the telco.

According to an ET Telecom report, ETG has given its nod to BSNL for going ahead with its hybrid 4G plan. To recall, much recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) also gave its nod to BSNL for hybrid 4G plans.

Indian Companies Can Participate in the Tender Too

If the Indian companies are able to generate Proof of Concept (PoC) in time, they can also become a part of the tender rolled out for global vendors.

It is worth noting that both Huawei and ZTE, along with any other Chinese vendor, has been abstained from participating in the tender process per the government's new policy, barring companies from nations sharing borders with India.

ZTE and Nokia have played a crucial role in rolling out 2G, and 3G networks of BSNL and the recent move will certainly hurt the meaningful business ZTE could have done in India.

Further, the greenfield 4G tender might also make it mandatory for the equipment used in the networks to be 5G compatible so that BSNL won't have to make huge capex spends again to upgrade its network.

Even though Chinese companies are not going to be included in the BSNL's 4G plan, another report from ET Telecom says that Huawei is confident about being included in India's telecom future.

Jay Chen, Vice President of Huawei Asia Pacific, believes that Huawei won't be 'blocked' from doing business in India. He believes that the Indian government will make the right decision when the time comes and include Huawei in its plans to roll out 5G network in India.

It is going to be interesting times ahead with BSNL finally pushing to rollout 4G and the government clearing its stance on ZTE and Huawei.

Realme 8 5G Might Sport 5,000mAh Battery and Weigh 185 Grams

Posted: 31 Mar 2021 05:00 AM PDT

Realme is soon going to launch the 5G variant of the Realme 8 launched a few days back in India. The India Head of Realme, Madhav Sheth, confirmed about the same, saying that the 5G variants of the smartphones will incur 'additional costs' which is well and obvious.

According to a tipster Abhishek Yadav, Realme 8 5G has bagged FCC certification, and through that, some of the details about the device can be confirmed. The Realme 8 5G has also been spotted in the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and Thailand's NBTC certification.

Let's take a look at all the leaked specifications of the device through the FCC listing.

Realme 8 5G Specifications (Expected)

The Realme 8 5G is expected to pack a 5,000mAh battery, the same as its 4G variant. However, the listing says that it will measure 8.5mm and weigh 185 grams which is more than its 4G variant, which measures 7.9mm and weigh 177 grams.

The reason for the extra weight and larger size can't be confirmed at the moment since the battery is the same size in both the variants. There is no confirmation about which chipset Realme will go for to provide the device 5G connectivity support, but the details will be out soon.

The Realme 8 5G is expected to come with a fingerprint sensor mounted at the side of the body, which is strange since the 4G variant that launched a couple of days back offers an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Further, the device is expected to come running on Realme UI 2.0 out of the box.

Realme 8 5G Price (Expected)

The Realme 8 5G is expected to fall under the Rs 20,000 price segment for its base model. The top-end variant with the maximum RAM and storage could cross the Rs 20,000 mark.

To recall, the Realme 8 was launched in three variants with 4GB+128GB, 6GB+128GB, and 8GB+128GB. The base variant with 4GB+128GB costs Rs 14,999, 6GB+128GB costs Rs 15,999, and 8GB+128GB costs Rs 16,999.

$1 Billion Incentives to be Provided to Semiconductor Manufacturers: Report

Posted: 31 Mar 2021 03:30 AM PDT

1-billion-incentives-semiconductor-manufacturers

To upscale more local production and reduce imports, the Indian government is offering semiconductor manufacturers incentives worth up to $1 billion in cash.

According to a Reuters report, a senior government official said that India wants chipset makers to set up their manufacturing facilities within the country.

He said that the government would 'promise' to be a buyer, and there will also be private companies that will be looking to purchase the chipsets for their devices. The arrival of semiconductor manufacturers in India would ensure no more chip shortages in the country.

During the last few months, smartphone makers in India have faced a severe chipset supply from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Governments worldwide are trying to get semiconductor manufacturers to set up their factories locally in their nation to save themselves from any future chip shortage.

Indian Government's Failed Attempts to Call Chipset Makers in the Country

This is not the first time the Indian government is calling the chipset makers into the country. Previous attempts from the government have failed due to several reasons.

The semiconductor manufacturers need a stable power supply, a solid infrastructure, good planning for the distribution, and more to set up factories in any place. India has lacked providing value to these companies in all the cases.

This is yet another attempt by the Indian government to call chipset makers into the country. The $1 billion cash benefit to the companies will be provided in several forms, which is yet to be decided, the official confirmed.

If India can successfully call semiconductor manufacturers to the country, it will complement the government's Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme to enhance the local production in India.

IT companies from all over the world are incentivised under the PLI scheme. Tech giants such as Apple and Samsung have already started manufacturing their products locally in India to sell within the country and export to other nations.

JioFiber vs ACT Fibernet 150 Mbps Broadband Plan, Which is Better

Posted: 30 Mar 2021 06:32 PM PDT

jiofiber-vs-act-fibernet-150-mbps-broadband

Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband connections have become super popular since the time JioFiber, ACT, Airtel Xstream Fiber and other players have started providing high-speed plans at affordable costs.

Today, we are going to compare the same 150 Mbps speed plan from two companies – ACT Fibernet and JioFiber. Both the companies have a ton of subscribers and offer their services in several cities of India.

Just because of resources, the plans from JioFiber are a little cheaper than what ACT Fibernet provides its users with. Let's compare and take a look at whose 150 Mbps plan is better.

JioFiber 150 Mbps Broadband Plan

The 150 Mbps broadband plan from JioFiber costs Rs 999 per month (exclusive of taxes) and provides users with a ton of over-the-top (OTT) benefits. The plan includes 3.3TB or 3,300GB fair usage policy (FUP) data along with a free fixed landline connection.

OTT benefits include free subscriptions of JioSaavn, JioCinema, Eros Now, Discovery+, LionsgatePlay, ShemarooMe, Hoichoi, ALTBalaji, Voot Kids, Voot Select, SunNXT, ZEE5, SonyLIV, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, and Amazon Prime Video.

Do note that this plan is also available in quarterly, semi-annual, and annual validities where the monthly cost of it reduces.

ACT Fibernet 150 Mbps Broadband Plan

ACT Fibernet offers an 'ACT Silver Promo' plan to the users in Delhi with 150 Mbps speed. It costs Rs 799 per month (exclusive of taxes). The plan offers the same 3.3TB or 3,300GB FUP data to the users. There are OTT benefits including a one month free trial of ZEE5 Premium, Hungama's Rs 249/month subscription available at Rs 99/month, AHA at Rs 365/year, 1 month-free trial of Cult.fit, ACT Shield starting at Rs 49/month, and a 1 month free trial of EpicOn.

Verdict

Looking at it cost-wise, ACT's plan is much better. But if OTT benefits were to be considered, JioFiber's 150 Mbps plan is better. Other things remain the same between both connections except for the presence of a free fixed-line connection for calling with ACT.
