OTT Platforms Such as Prime Video and Netflix Should be Regulated: Supreme Court

Over-the-top (OTT) platforms have become the go-to options for users seeking entertainment from their homes. Even after the re-opening of cinemas across the country, people are still scared to walk into big halls filled with other people because of the pandemic. Since OTT content is being consumed at the highest rate ever, the Supreme Court (SC) has said that some regulations should be put on the platforms distributing or availing content to the users. According to a Reuters report, the SC believes that some sort of screening mechanism should be put on the online video streaming platforms.

Some Sort of Screening for OTT Platforms Important Believes SC

The US streaming platforms such as Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are ruling the OTT market in India. None of these platforms' content is being regulated or screened before it is released for the users in India.

Some of the lawmakers from political parties of the country believe that the OTT platforms show content that is offensive towards the religious beliefs of Indians. Thus the SC has asked for some regulations to be put in place against the content of OTT platforms.

The remarks on the SC issue came when it was hearing a plea from Aparna Purohit, Amazon Prime Video content head for India.

Purohit was arrested for showing Hindu gods in a derogatory manner and offending the religious beliefs of Indian people. The SC will hear more on the case on Friday.

The government has asked the OTT platforms to classify the content into five categories based on their appropriateness for different age groups. At present, no major regulations are governing the content released on the OTT platforms.

Both telcos and the SC is after the government to bring regulations to the OTT platforms as soon as possible. The SC had told the centre last month that it cannot accept any more delays on the matter and had asked the government to file an affidavit citing what it was doing to regulate the platforms.

OnePlus Nord 2 Likely to Feature MediaTek Dimensity 1200 SoC

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 09:06 PM PST

OnePlus Nord 2 Will Be Powered by Dimensity 1200 SoC

OnePlus Nord 2 is another upcoming smartphone from the Chinese smartphone brand. We last heard about the OnePlus Nord successor in November 2020 and a new report now reveals the smartphone’s name and processor. Android Central, which has a great track record when it comes to OnePlus leaks, now says the OnePlus Nord successor will be called OnePlus Nord 2. The publication claims the Nord 2 will be the first OnePlus phone to feature a non-Qualcomm chipset. In fact, it says the device will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset. To recall, the OnePlus Nord uses Snapdragon 765G SoC. As for the launch date, we can expect the Nord 2 to go official right after the OnePlus 9 series launch later this month.

OnePlus Nord 2 Leaked: Everything You Need to Know

OnePlus Nord series was the company’s take on the mid-range smartphone segment. The OnePlus Nord became an instant best-seller in India and some other markets. However, the other two Nord phones- the Nord N10 5G and the Nord N100 (never launched in India) did not receive enough response from the audience. Coming to the Nord 2, it will succeed the original Nord that went official in August last year.

The OnePlus Nord 2 will have the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chipset which is something unusual. OnePlus always chose Qualcomm SoCs on its smartphones, but as the company evolves, we are getting to see more changes in its strategy. There isn’t a proper upgrade to Snapdragon 765G chipset that’s present on the OnePlus Nord, so it makes sense for the company to choose a powerful chipset from MediaTek.

MediaTek announced the Dimensity 1200 SoC at the beginning of 2021 and it is a powerful chip with one Cortex A78 core clocked at 3.0GHz, three Cortex A78 cores with clock speed up to 2.6GHz and four Cortex A55 cores with up to 2.0GHz clock speeds. And yes, MediaTek’s Dimensity series is all about 5G.

We are not sure why OnePlus is making this major move. More details regarding the OnePlus Nord 2 is expected to come out in the coming days. The launch date of the phone is expected to be right after the OnePlus 9 series. OnePlus is making a major announcement regarding the OnePlus 9 range of devices on March 8.

More WhatsApp Web Users Get Calling Feature

Posted: 03 Mar 2021 07:47 PM PST

WhatsApp’s calling service for desktop users is out of beta, according to a new tweet from WABetaInfo. In December last year, WhatsApp made the audio and video calling service available to select Web/Desktop users, and the same feature is now said to be rolling out to several users. WhatsApp users on the Web/Desktop version of 2.2104.10 will soon be able to make and receive calls on the web. The feature is a long time in the making, but it will take some more time for the Facebook-owned company to roll it out to all the users. If the feature is live for you, the video and voice calling icons will be present on the personal chat screen just beside the search button.

WhatsApp Web Gets Voice and Video Calling Feature

With this new feature, users will be able to make and receive voice calls directly on the web. Several people use WhatsApp on the web, but the features are very limited. In fact, to use WhatsApp Web, your phone should be present nearby to your laptop. WhatsApp’s direct rival, Telegram, is offering a slew of features on the web, including multi-login support and video & audio calls.

WhatsApp is reportedly working on multi-device support, whereas the video and voice calling support is rolling out now. To test this feature, you can download the WhatsApp Web app on your macOS or Windows laptop. Alternatively, you can also visit web.whatsapp.com and link your device by scanning the QR Code from your mobile phone.

We were unable to spot the feature on WhatsApp’s Web application for macOS and even the feature did not show up on our Surface Laptop Go (both apps and Chrome browser), as of this writing. As noted, it might take some time for the feature to reach all the users. That said, there’s no trick to get the feature right away on your machine, so it is going to be a patience game.

The limited period offer came into effect on March 2, 2021, and it will end on March 31, 2021. During the offer period, customers will get a total of 395 days validity with the Rs 1,999 prepaid plan of BSNL. At the end of January, BSNL reduced the data benefit of the Rs 1,999 plan to 2GB per day from the earlier 3GB per day. Besides revising the annual plan, the telecom operator even regularised the Zing app subscription benefit on select prepaid plans.

BSNL Rs 1,999 Plan Revision: Check the Limited Period Offer

The PV 1999 or Rs 1,999 is an annual plan available to BSNL prepaid subscribers. Usually, the plan comes with benefits for 365 days, however, the same has now been revised to offer for 395 days. As noted, the offer ends at the end of this month, and it is available across all the telecom circles.

As for the benefits, users will be able to make unlimited voice calls to any network with this prepaid plan. They can consume 2GB of data per day and send 100 SMSes per day for the entire validity period. Other benefits offered by BSNL include free BSNL Tunes subscription with an unlimited song change option for 365 days, Lokdhun content for the first 60 days and Eros Now content for 365 days. Do make a note that users will get extra validity only on the recharges done after March 2.

BSNL Regularises Zing App Subscription Plans

Last year, BSNL started bundling Zing app subscription with select prepaid plans. Back then, it was a promotional offer, but as per the latest development, BSNL has now regularised the Zing app subscription on select prepaid plans. Prepaid plans of Rs 56, Rs 151, Rs 251, Rs 499, Rs 599 and Rs 666 will offer Zing app subscription going forward.

The change has been implemented on March 1 across the country. While the Rs 51, Rs 151 and Rs 251 plans are data-only STVs, the other three plans come with voice calling, SMS and data benefits. The Rs 666 prepaid recharge, in particular, is a very interesting plan with the benefits of unlimited voice calls, 2GB data per day, 100 SMSes per day, BSNL Tunes, Zing app subscription valid for 120 days from the date of recharge. The Rs 56 data STV is available as Rs 57 STV in the Kerala telecom circle.
