Indian Consumers Use More Mobile Data Than US Consumers: ATC

Posted: 05 Mar 2021 04:07 AM PST

India has been a "challenging" market for the American Tower Corporation (ATC) in the past couple of years, Igor Khislavsky, vice president of investor relations at ATC said on Tuesday. ATC, one of the leading infrastructure providers engaged in the telecom space is said to own and operate over 75,000 tower sites in India as of December 31, 2020. Khislavsky in the 42nd Raymond James Annual Institutional Investors Conference on Tuesday highlighted that ATC has had its presence in India since 2007. The ATC VP said that India was its "fastest growth market on an organic basis" until 2017 to 2018 "even with a very inefficient market structure."

Telecom Industry Consolidation Happened at "Astronomical Pace"

Khislavsky said that the ATC India was "growing organically" between 8% to 11% per year during its peak years.

"That has obviously not happened the last couple of years," Khislavsky said. "And the catalyst for that, as you alluded to, was a wholesale carrier consolidation process, where you saw the wireless industry in India go from 14 or 15 carriers, which we knew was far too many, down to basically three large carriers plus a smaller government funded entity in the course of about 12 to 18 months, which is an astronomical pace for carrier consolidation."

Further, Khislavsky said that the one of the three large wireless carriers in India is "in a position where they need to really raise some funds." The ATC VP said that the particular large carrier working towards raising funds is a "large tenant" of the company in India.

"And they’re working [in] re-establishing their strategic path forward at this point, from a network perspective," Khislavsky said. "So they’re working through that."

ATC Optimistic About India on Long Term

Khislavsky said that the company is "optimistic" about the Indian market in the long term as a "significant" number of people are still on legacy 2G and 3G networks than on 4G.

"And to fundamentally deploy 4G technology across the country, there has to be a tremendous amount of incremental network investment on the part of all the carriers," Khislavsky said. "There have been some hiccups in that process clearly over the last couple of years."

Analysts have said that the 4G subscriber addition in India has largely been aided by the Jiophone sales with the 4G penetration said to be at 57% as of December 31, 2020. It has to be noted that Reliance Jio in early March unveiled new data plans for its JioPhone users priced between Rs 22 to Rs 152.

However, the ATC VP said that the mobile devices from a "pricing perspective have come down" in the past few years and that there is "demand for mobile data usage" in India.

"Indian consumers who have smartphones use them at a greater rate than U.S. consumers do, believe it or not," Khislavsky said. "You have a large population. That population is mobile data hungry. There’s no fixed-line alternatives to speak of."

Crucially, Khislavsky said that the Indian telecom industry structurally "looks much better than it ever has" with the country currently having an " reasonable wireless market structure" and a "reasonable tower industry structure."

Rod Smith, chief financial officer at ATC on Monday said that there is a "window of hope" for the operators in India as "government has accepted" to recalculate the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues.

"Our hope is that the government makes some decisions here that is supportive of the carriers because the digital India initiative is important to the government," Smith said at the Morgan Stanley 2021 Technology, Media and Telecom Conference. "They want to have a robust wireless infrastructure and they need healthy carriers, and they’ve had stated the preference to have three commercial carriers in India. So we think there’s a pathway there."

The ATC CFO said that the telecom tariffs have to rise in India and that the tariff hikes in particular "will be good" for Vodafone Idea.

"So we think that there’s some signs that that’s beginning to happen again," Smith said. "It happened about six months ago, and we think it’s beginning to happen again. That will be good for the industry."

Broadband: What is Band Steering and How it Can Help You?

Posted: 05 Mar 2021 02:30 AM PST

broadband-what-is-band-steering

Band Steering is a term you might not have heard before, but your Wi-Fi router might be doing that without you knowing. It is a technology aimed to smoothen the broadband internet experience for the consumer. It is a fairly new technology, and that is why a lot of people don't know about it. Band steering will allow you to get an uninterrupted and seamless browsing experience. It is a very clever technology developed for Wi-Fi networks that handle multiple devices at the same time. Here is all you need to understand about Band Steering.

What is Band Steering?

Before understanding band steering, let's take a quick look at the problem it solves. When multiple devices are connected to the same broadband Wi-Fi network, it can create congestion issues. This means that none of the devices connected to the network will get a seamless internet experience.

All the modern-day routers come with support for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The 2.4 GHz band is good for providing network coverage in a large area, but it can't provide the maximum speed. While the 5 GHz band is good for providing the maximum speed, it can provide network connectivity in a small area only.

Most of the old devices don't come with support for the 5 GHz band because it is new. This is where 'band steering' jumps in.

When there are a lot of devices connected to the same network, band steering technology intelligently connects the older devices with the 2.4 GHz network and the new devices which can support the higher frequency band with the 5 GHz network.

This ensures that no network band is left underserved and thus reduces the chances for network congestion. The band steering technology comes fitted in the Wi-Fi router, so check if you have a Wi-Fi router that can do that.

With the band steering technology in the Wi-Fi router, fiber broadband users won't have to worry about getting a slow experience despite purchasing a high-speed plan.

Samsung Galaxy A22 Might be the Most Affordable 5G Device to Date

Posted: 05 Mar 2021 01:30 AM PST

samsung-galaxy-a22-5g-launch

Samsung launched the A42 5G last year, which was crowned as the cheapest 5G smartphone from the company. But that title was recently snatched by the A32 5G, which launched in Europe and Russia. The South Korean giant may launch the Galaxy A22 5G later this year, which is expected to take the title of being the cheapest 5G smartphone from Samsung to date. According to the online rumours, the device might launch in the second half of 2021. Take a look at some of the information shared by the GalaxyClub in its report about the device.

Samsung Galaxy A22 5G Details

According to the publication's report, the Samsung Galaxy A22 5G will carry the model number – SM – A226B. It will be an ODM device, unlike most of the Samsung Galaxy Smartphones and will be just like the Galaxy Tab A7 Lite (SM – T225).

The report suggests that the Galaxy A22 5G will come in two different configurations of memory/storage. The colour options it might be available in are – violet, light green, white, and grey. Samsung is expected to sell the device both in the Europe and Asia markets.

There are no other specifications of the device available at the moment. But more should come to surface soon since the device is expected to launch later this year. It is worth noting that the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G didn't launch in India.

Samsung has only launched its 4G variant in the country, and there is no word or indication from the company on bringing its 5G variant here. That might be the case with Samsung Galaxy A22 5G as well since India's 5G market is still not ripe as commercial 5G rollout is quite far from here.

But if the Galaxy A22 5G does arrive in India, it might be able to give serious competition to other mid-range 5G smartphones from the Chinese companies.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Airtel, and Jio are a few of the top broadband operators in the country. All the operators mentioned above provide their users with fiber broadband plans. There are multiple plans you can choose from, but today, we will single out one plan from each internet service provider (ISP), which is unique and best in their category. We are taking the fiber plans from BSNL, Airtel, and Jio because they are available pan-India at the same tariffs.

One Fiber Broadband Plan BSNL, Airtel and Jio That is Worth it

Starting with the state-run telco, BSNL's Rs 999 fiber broadband plan is a killer value option for the users. It provides 200 Mbps downloading and uploading speed, which is sufficient for doing anything you want to do from your home/office. This plan comes with 3.3TB of data and also offers a free landline connection. There is an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP included as well.

Coming to Airtel, it provides users with a 200 Mbps broadband plan for the same rate as BSNL. It costs Rs 999 per month and offers 3.3TB (3,333GB) data to the users. This plan also offers a free landline connection with an OTT benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP, Airtel Xstream Premium, Wynk Music, and more Airtel Thanks benefits.

Lastly, Jio's Rs 999 broadband plan offers users 150 Mbps speeds. While it is a lower speed than what Airtel and BSNL offer, it is still sufficient for doing most or all of the tasks an average user needs to do. Users get 3.3TB data along with a free landline connection and OTT benefits of 14 different applications worth Rs 1,000 for free.

It is worthy to note that none of the prices mentioned above is inclusive of GST. Additionally, these plans are also available for long-term validities, which bring their monthly cost down and make them a better deal.

Redmi K40 and K40 Pro Might Arrive in India as Mi 11X and Mi 11X Pro

Xiaomi launched the Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro in China last month. The company didn't suggest any timeline for the product's global launch. Some earlier reports suggested that the Redmi K40 series will launch as Poco F3 for the global market. But a new report is saying that might not be the case and the Redmi K40 series might launch as Mi 11X series for the Indian market. An internal code-shared by the XDA Developers tipster Kacper Skrzypek suggests that the Redmi K40 and Redmi K40 Pro will launch in India as Mi 11X and Mi 11X Pro.

Redmi K40 Series Might Arrive in India as Mi 11X Series

The Redmi K40 series is unlikely to launch under the Poco brand given the recent developments. The internal code found by the tipster mentions 'aliothin' which is a code name for a smartphone with the model number M2012K11AI. It suggests that the smartphone in question here is very likely going to be called 'Mi 11X'.

It is worthy to note that the Redmi K40 was codenamed 'alioth'. The additional 'in' added to the code suggests that it is for the India launch. This means that the Redmi K40 series might launch as Mi 11X series instead as the Poco F3.

The screenshot shared by the tipster also mentioned a smartphone with the codename 'Mi 11X Pro' which might be the rebadged version of Redmi K40 Pro for India. There was another device in the screenshots as well, it was – 'Mi 11i'.

The codename for Mi 11i was 'haydn_pro_global' which suggests that it is for the global market and not for the Indian market. It is worth noting that the Redmi K40 Pro+ was codenamed 'haydn_pro'. This means that the Redmi K40 Pro+ might launch as Mi 11i for the global market.

These are just speculations based on the findings of the codenames and nothing has been confirmed by the company yet.

Vodafone Idea’s Massive Fund Raise Plan Reportedly Hit Roadblock

Posted: 04 Mar 2021 09:09 PM PST

Vodafone Idea is facing another major hurdle as its fundraising talks with foreign lenders’ consortium led by Oak Hill Advisors hit a roadblock. A new report now says Vi’s massive $2 billion fundraising plan is now uncertain following differences between key consortium members. An ET Telecom report says the talks have not fallen through entirely, however, the struggling telecom operator is already exploring new partners for a fundraise. The fundraise talks between Vi and the foreign lenders’ consortium was supposed to end on January 31. But it was extended till February 28. Late last month, GoldenTree exited the consortium.

Vi and Consortium Members Face Key Differences During Fundraise Talks

For the unaware, Vodafone Idea was looking to raise Rs 14,600 crore or $2 billion through equity funding. When we last reported regarding this topic on February 10, the consortium members were hesitant in closing the deal but they sought some safeguards and business milestones from the struggling telecom operator. The consortium that is led by Oak Hill also includes GoldenTree Asset Management, Pacific Investment Management Co, Sixth Street, Twin Point Capital and Varde Partners. As noted, GoldenTree Asset Management chose to exit the consortium at the end of February.

The latest report says Vodafone Idea’s management and the consortium members such as Oak Hill and Varde Partners had some differences during the talks. The differences occurred over “funding terms and furnishing of guarantees in case of payment defaults.” ET Telecom managed to grab this information from people aware of the matter.

That being said, the talks are not completely fallen off between the parties. To be on the safe side, Vi is already exploring other partners for possible fundraising.

Vodafone Idea is possibly the worst positioned telecom operator right now and the telco must have pinned a lot of hopes on this fundraising. Thankfully, the telco did not have to take any major participation at the Spectrum Auction 2021. Vi grabbed just 11.8 MHz (mostly in the 1800 MHz band) and said its intentions of launching 5G services at the earliest.

Poco X3 Pro With Snapdragon 860 SoC Rumoured to Launch Very Soon

Posted: 04 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PST

Poco X3 Pro is another smartphone that’s expected to launch alongside the Poco F3 later this month. Tipster Mukul Sharma claims the Poco X3 Pro and Poco F3 will be launched in global markets by the end of March. The Poco F2, aka Poco F3, is one of the much-anticipated smartphones in recent times. It is also said the Redmi K40 that went official in China last month will arrive as Poco F3 in several markets. Furthermore, another tipster going by the name Kacper Skrzypek said on Twitter that Xiaomi would launch the Redmi K40 as Mi 11X. The Chinese company Xiaomi seems to have revamped its flagship strategy and all the future high-end phones may come under the Mi brand itself. The Xiaomi Mi 11 is also expected to launch in India very soon.

Poco X3 Pro, Poco F3 and Xiaomi Mi 11X to Launch in India Soon

The Poco F3 has been making rounds on the web with the same model number as Redmi K40. This essentially means the Xiaomi spin-off is looking at a possible rebrand of Redmi K40. While the Poco F3 is said to be a rebadged Redmi K40, the Poco K40 Pro could arrive as Poco F3 Pro in select markets.

Besides the Poco F3, we might also see the Poco X3 Pro launching very soon. Mukul Sharma claims the Poco X3 Pro will be powered by the unannounced Snapdragon 860 chipset that will sit between the Snapdragon 855+ and the Snapdragon 865. The performance of the Snapdragon 860 could be similar to the Snapdragon 855+ though, because the already announced Snapdragon 870 delivers identical performance as the Snapdragon 865. Other rumoured features of the Poco X3 Pro include a 120Hz Full HD+ screen and a 5200mAh battery. The X3 Pro will just be a bumped up variant of Poco X3 that has features like 120Hz LCD panel, Snapdragon 732G SoC, 6000mAh battery and 64MP quad-camera setup.

Lastly, we have the Xiaomi Mi 11X series. This news is a bit surprising, but it is also convincing at the same time. Twitter user Kacper Skrzypek spotted the Mi 11X and Mi 11X Pro smartphones in source code of MIUI system app. The Redmi K40 will arrive in India as Mi 11X, followed by the Redmi K40 Pro as the Mi 11X Pro. And yes, the standard Mi 11 is also slated to launch in India very soon.

That being said, there’s no official confirmation from Xiaomi or Poco, so take this news with a grain of salt.
