Trai, Telcos Implement New SMS Template Causing Disruption in OTP Services

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:56 AM PST

trai-telcos-new-sms-template

Citizens of India cannot receive crucial one-time-passwords (OTPs) from the telecom operators because of the implementation of the new SMS template. The operators have said that it is the fault of the businesses unable to follow and implement the new SMS template in their system. Even after multiple delays, big institutions of India haven't taken the interest to comply with the regulatory standards because of which their SMSes aren't being delivered to the customers — more details on the story ahead.

New SMS Template Implemented on March 8, 2021

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has directed the telcos to implement the new SMS template, and it is live since midnight of March 8, 2021 (Monday).

Since the industry was not ready before, the implementation of the new SMS template has been pushed ahead by the telcos multiple times. But not anymore; the companies which weren't too strict on implementing the new SMS template are now paying for it since none of their important messages or OTPs is being delivered to their customers.

According to an ET Telecom report, the Delhi High Court has ordered the implementation of the new template, and thus it can't be delayed anymore. The telcos have done their part, and despite getting a lot of time, the companies have been relaxed about implementing the regulations in their system.

For controlling and bringing down SMS frauds, the telecom operators have been asked to check the header and the footer of every commercial SMS that originates from a registered source. The operators will be using blockchain technology to verify this, and any unregistered SMS template will be blocked.

This is what is happening with the businesses. Banks such as HDFC and the SBI are furious about the SMS blocks and are dialling Trai to resolve the matter at the earliest. But the banks, along with every other business, will now have to implement the new SMS template in their system. This is the only solution for them at the moment.

Airtel Business Insights: Hyper-Personalisation Important for User Engagement

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:02 AM PST

airtel-business-insights-engagement

Airtel Business, the Business-to-Business (B2B) arm of Bharti Airtel, today released its Business Insights report called 'Customer Engagement Redefined. Anytime. Anywhere." The report focuses on the importance of reimagining customer experience at a time when users hold several personal devices and consume services through different channels. According to the report, there are five pillars that redefine customer engagement journeys.

Five Pillars to Redefine Customer Engagement Journey

The first pillar is 'Intelligent Interactions'. According to the report, customers today expect consistent services and a connected experience. Thus intuitive customer satisfaction surveys, digital onboarding, chat-bot based conversations and more become very essential.

The second point highlighted in the report was 'hyper-personalisation'. With the help of big data, businesses can identify their customers’ behaviour and characteristics and provide them with a personalised service/experience. It helps in keeping the attention of the users.

Coming to the third point, a business should focus on providing consistent services to users. Whether the customer is interacting with the mobile app, web store, or physical store, the experience must stay consistent. The engagement experience throughout the different channels of sales should be uniform.

The fourth point highlighted in the report is 'Customer's Choice of Time'. It means that a business should know the right time to approach a customer with its services. Customers have varied interests, and the business should be able to identify the time they will give them their attention.

Lastly, the fifth point of the report focused on providing a secure shopping experience to the customer. Businesses should invest resources in making their service more robust and secure for the end customer. 'Digital trust' in today's world is very important, and businesses need to increase their privacy and security standards to earn their customers’ trust.

Ajay Chitkara, Director and CEO of Airtel Business, said that customers are looking for services/products online-first and are paying more attention to omnichannel services.

5G Will be Launched in India With New Rules for Telecom Industry

Posted: 07 Mar 2021 11:07 PM PST

5g-will-be-launched-in-india

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has decided to introduce a much-needed change in the rules governing the telecom industry before 5G is commercially is launched in the country. Currently, the industry is being governed by the outdated provisions of the Indian Telegraphy Act (1885) and the Indian Wireless Telegraphy Act (1933). But the technology and the manner of communication has evolved furiously in the last two decades; thus, new rules need to come into effect which shall allow, for instance, communication between devices that are connected.

NLU Delhi Has Four Months to Prepare the Draft for New Rules

According to a Livemint report, the National Law University (NLU) of Delhi has been given the task to study and analyse the acts which need modification or changes because of the advent of new technology and the passage of time.

Telecom secretary Anshu Prakash has said that the NLU has four months for preparing the draft. The draft being worked upon will include Internet-of-Things (IoT), Machine-to-Machine (M2M) learning, and more which will be key for use-cases of 5G.

The upcoming mandate will seek to ease the regulation on the industry to promote innovation and, most importantly, will allow 5G to grow rapidly in the country. Prakash said that the current legislation takes into account the interface between different individuals and individuals with the machines. However, it doesn't include any provisions for the machine-to-machine interface.

It is worth noting that the real advantage of 5G, as many of its use-cases suggest, would be seamless communication between electronic gadgets/machines. 5G would automate a lot of production processes and even help the world in making bot cars/driverless cars a common reality.

The new rules will certainly help in the smooth implementation of 5G and allow India to grow its digital economy and infrastructure. This can be considered a good move by the government since a change in provisions governing the industry was needed for a long time, better late than never!

JioBook: An Affordable Laptop by Reliance Jio With 4G LTE and JioOS Reportedly in the Works

Posted: 07 Mar 2021 09:19 PM PST

After conquering the telecom and feature phone segments, Reliance Jio seems to be setting its eyes on India’s laptop market. A new report by XDA Developers claims that Reliance Jio is working on a low-cost 4G LTE-enabled laptop called JioBook. According to the firmware reviewed by the publication, Jio is reportedly developing a laptop running a forked version of Android. Months after the JioPhone launch in 2017, Jio revealed that it is closely working with Qualcomm for a cheap 4G laptop. It has been close to three years since this information came out and the first product between both the parties could arrive soon. That said, the JioBook leaked online was running on Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform. Furthermore, the report also claimed that Jio is taking the help of Bluebank Communication Technology based out of China to manufacture the JioBook. Here’s everything we know about the JioBook.

What to Expect from JioBook?

Reliance Jio is closely working with Google to develop a low-cost 4G Android smartphone. This device will likely hit the market anytime in Q2 2021. Now, apart from the 4G smartphones, India’s biggest telco seems to be working with Qualcomm to develop an affordable laptop. The firmware accessed by XDA says the laptop will be named ‘JioBook.’ It will run a forked version of Android 10, and Jio will be naming it as ‘JioOS.’ Reliance Jio was one of the early adopters of KaiOS. Both generations of JioPhones are powered by KaiOS itself.

That said, when we talk about laptops, the obvious thing that comes into our mind is Windows 10, but we are talking about Jio’s product, so obviously, the company will be having a different strategy to tap the market. Ironically, the leaked image of JioBook’s keyboard has a ‘Windows’ logo, but there are heavy chances of it being swapped with a different key.

Other leaked specifications of JioBook include Snapdragon 665 SoC with Snapdragon X12 modem, a screen with 1366×768 pixel resolution, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. Right now, Windows 10 does not support Snapdragon 662, which could be the reason behind Jio opting for a different operating system. But it will be interesting to see how this JioOS-powered laptop runs in real life.

The JioBook is expected to come in different configurations- 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM+32GB of eMMC storage and 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM+64GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. The report also says the unfinished product has several Jio and Microsoft apps preinstalled, such as JioStore, JioMeet, JioPages, Microsoft Edge, Office and Teams.

The name JioBook also seems to fit the bill and the company’s other products and services like JioPhone, JioMeet, JioTV and so on. As of this writing, Reliance Jio did not respond to this leak. Reliance Jio might be aiming at capturing the tablet market in India. For example, Lenovo, in collaboration with the Indian government, is selling a lot of tablets every quarter in the educational sector. What if Reliance Jio delivers a laptop with basic specifications at the price of a tablet that Lenovo is selling?

And COVID-19 has proved that online learning is possible, so we will be seeing a lot of educational institutions shift to complete remote learning in the coming years. With that said, Reliance JioBook might go official in the second quarter of 2021 alongside the heavily rumoured affordable Jio 4G smartphones powered by Android. What are your thoughts on Jio making a low-cost 4G laptop? Let us know in the comments section below.

Moto G10 Power With 6000mAh Battery and Moto G30 With 90Hz Display Launching Tomorrow

Posted: 07 Mar 2021 07:35 PM PST

Motorola G10 Power and Moto G30 Flipkart Teasers

Motorola is all set to launch the Moto G10 Power and the Moto G30 smartphones in India tomorrow (March 9). The Lenovo-owned company has confirmed the two phones’ exclusivity to e-commerce giant Flipkart. The landing page made live on Flipkart reveals the key specifications of both phones. The Moto G10 Power will sport a beefy 6000mAh battery competing with the likes of Poco M3, Redmi 9 Power and the Realme Narzo 30A. The Moto G30, on the other hand, is confirmed to have a 90Hz display. As we reported earlier, Motorola is teasing both the phones with the hashtag ‘AsliAllRounders.’ The Moto G30 went official in Europe last month, but it seems like the Moto G10 Power will make its global debut in India with its specifications largely similar to the Moto G10.

Moto G10 Power and Moto G30 India Launch: What to Expect?

The Moto G10 Power will mostly be the Moto G10 with a 6000mAh battery. The phone is also confirmed to have a 48MP quad-camera setup on the rear side. The image of the Moto G10 Power revealed by Flipkart shows an identical rear panel design to the Moto G10. For the unaware, the Moto G10 launched in Europe sports a 6.5-inch HD+ MaxVision display and it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 460 chipset. The phone might come in a single variant with 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The quad-camera setup on the Moto G10 Power will include a 48MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, 2MP macro sensor and a 2MP depth sensor. There’s an 8MP camera on the front. The handset also has a dedicated hardware key for triggering Google Assistant. The Moto G10 has a 5000mAh battery, so the only difference between the G10 and the G10 Power could be the 6000mAh battery.

Moving onto the Moto G30, the phone will have a 6.5-inch 90Hz screen and 64MP quad-camera setup. Other specifications of the G30 include 5000mAh battery, rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, up to 6GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 662 SoC.

We are expecting the Moto G10 Power to retail for Rs 10,999 in the country because the Moto E7 Plus with the same Snapdragon 460 SoC launched last year is available at Rs 9,499. The Moto G30 could retail at a starting price of Rs 12,999 or Rs 13,999, considering the slightly powerful processor, upgraded cameras and a high refresh rate screen. Again, these are just our expectations. Check back this space tomorrow for the official launch prices of both phones.
