Samsung Achieves 5.23 Gbps 5G Data Speeds Using E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity

Posted: 09 Mar 2021 08:28 AM PST

Samsung Achieves 5G Data Speeds of 5.23 Gbps

South Korean company Samsung Electronics today said that it achieved an incredible 5G speeds of 5.23 Gbps using EN-DC technology. With the help of E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) technology, telecom operators can boost 5G speeds and coverage by leveraging a 4G network. These are not the fastest speeds achieved on 5G because the record is held of 8 Gbps speed is held by Nokia and Qualcomm. However, Samsung used a different technology (EN-DC) this time around and the smartphone used for this test was Samsung Galaxy S20+. The demonstration was carried out in Samsung’s lab in South Korea.

Samsung Uses EN-DC Technology to Combine 4G and 5G Networks

Samsung said the test was completed combining 40 MHz of 4G frequency and 800 MHz of 5G frequency in mmWave, which resulted in 5.23 Gbps data speeds on a single device. Furthermore, Samsung said it used commercial end-to-end solutions comprised of devices and network products such as Samsung Galaxy S20+ smartphone, 4G radios, 5G radios (Compact Macro Link) and 4G/5G common Core (Link).

Coming to the highlight of this demonstration, Samsung used EN-DC technology that enables operators to combine 4G and 5G for maximising the benefits of both networks. This will result in enhanced speeds, coverage and reliability. The company also said it leveraged carrier aggregation (CA) to combine multiple channels of spectrum for boosting data speeds over a wireless network.

Telecom operators across the globe will make use of the 4G spectrum to enhance 5G services and Samsung believes the EN-DC technology will show the power of using a dual 4G and 5G approach.

The company highlighted that this achievement is based on years of 5G research. In India, Reliance Jio uses Samsung’s telecom gear and technologies. Today’s 5.23 Gbps speeds on a single 5G device is another milestone for Samsung. In 2018, Samsung achieved 1.7 Gbps 5G speeds on one of the first multi-gigabit 5G New Radio (NR) data connections, followed by 2.65 Gbps data speeds in 2019 and 4.3 Gbps speeds in 2020. And this year, it has surpassed all the previously achieved 5G speeds using a new approach in EN-DC technology.

bsnl-issues-advisories-against-sms-frauds
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has just issued a notice alerting its users regarding the SMS frauds that are happening in the country. The state-run telco has said that these fraudsters are using the KYC details of the customers to withdraw money from their bank account. The telco said that fraudsters are approaching the customers through SMS and telling them that their BSNL SIM will be deactivated if they didn't complete the KYC procedure. The headers that most of these fake SMS contain are – 'CP-SMSFST, AD-VIRINF, CP-BLMKND, and BP-ITLINN'. BSNL has said that these messages are not being sent by the telco and has asked the customers not to entertain them.

Government and Telcos Have Implemented a New SMS Template to Tackle the Issue

The new SMS template system that will run with the help of blockchain technology has gone live since yesterday. Very important SMSes such as OTPs and more weren't being delivered to the customers yesterday because of the same.

The telcos gave enough time to the businesses in India to adopt the new SMS template, but because a majority of big institutions didn't pay a lot of importance to it. However, according to the Delhi High Court order, the new SMS verification system went live yesterday. Now, any message that originates from a verified company/business needs to follow the header and footer template as suggested by the government.

This system will reduce the percentage of SMS frauds since any SMS that is not verified by the telcos will be blocked and not delivered to the customers. The BSNL SMS fraud is also expected to reduce with the new SMS verification system. But being aware of such frauds is essential. Adding to this, not giving important information such as OTPs and other personal information is also important.

You can also report such SMSes to the telcos and the concerned authorities.

nepal-to-beat-india--5g

Nepal is all set to become the first country in South Asia to roll out 5G services. It plans to roll out 5G by mid-July of this year. Whereas in India, the telcos haven't been able to even test the next generation connectivity properly. Kathmandu, along with three other major cities of Nepal, will have 5G connectivity by the end of this fiscal year. According to a report from The Kathmandu Post, a proposal for issuing a separate frequency for 5G operations was submitted on February 1, 2021, to the National Frequency Determining Committee under the Ministry of Information, Communication and Technology.

5G Testing Might Take Up to One Year

The ministry is currently studying the submitted proposal and is said to announce something by next week. Anup Nepal, Chief Engineer for the Ministry's Analysis Division and Frequency Management, said that they would have to first identify the spectrum that will be necessary for installing 5G.

Further, it will be then tested in different geographical locations, and the results will be collected before a full-fledged rollout is possible. He said that the trials may take two or three months or might even a complete year.

It is worth noting that the state-owned telecom company Nepal Telecom will be the first to start 5G trials once the spectrum needed is identified. Nepal already has a strong 4G user base. According to Nepal Telecom, 4G in the country already covers 85% of the population and 75% of the population already own 4G supportive devices.

The government will work under the Digital Nepal Framework 2018 to expand the 5G network in the country. Nepal Telecom MD, Dilli Ram Adhikari, said that the telco would issue a global tender to purchase 5G equipment to bump up network infrastructure once the pilot is successful. Until then, the telco has asked its 4G equipment supplier to supply 5G equipment as well.

iPhone 12 Manufacturing in India to Start Soon: Report

iphone-12-in-india-production

Apple is planning to start manufacturing the iPhone 12 series in India. The Cupertino tech giant is reportedly shifting its manufacturing facilities from China to other parts of Asia to safeguard itself from any trade wars that may happen between the USA and China. Apple is already manufacturing a ton of iPhones in India. It all started with the iPhone SE, which was followed by the iPhone XR and iPhone 11. Now, Apple is planning to shift the iPhone 12 series production to India from China. It is also thinking about manufacturing the iPhone 12 mini in India, but a final decision is yet to be taken.

iPhone 12 Production to Shift to India from China

According to a Business Standard report, Apple plans to initially shift about 7% to 10% of the iPhone 12 production from China to India. As for the plans for iPhone 12 mini, the company is still contemplating the decision that needs to be taken.

The iPhone 12 production in India should start under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, and the device should be available for purchase within India as well as for exports. Apple will be able to skip on paying heavy import duties on the iPhones saving a lot of its cost with local manufacturing.

One thing that remains to be seen is if Apple will extend the benefits of low-cost to the customers in India or not. It is worth noting that there was no price difference between the iPhones manufactured within India and the imported ones in the past.

However, if Apple brings the price of the iPhones down for the Indian customers, it will be able to attract a much larger chunk of the Indian market. Apple has been eyeing a larger market share in India, and this would be the perfect opportunity for the tech giant to realise its goals.

JioFiber Tops Netflix ISP Speed Index in February With 3.6 Mbps Average Speed

Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PST

JioFiber Netflix ISP Speed Index February 2021 Report

The popular streaming platform, Netflix, has updated its ISP Speed Index for February 2021. JioFiber retains the top spot with an average speed of 3.6 Mbps. Notably, it is the only ISP in the country with a 3.6 Mbps median speed, whereas other ISPs on the list achieved 3.4 Mbps speeds. 7 Star Digital, Airtel Xstream Fiber, ACT Fibernet, Excitel Broadband, Spectra and Tatasky Broadband share the second spot with 3.4 Mbps speeds. The country’s leading wired internet service provider, BSNL, is second to last on the list with just 2.8 Mbps speed. BSNL has revised its Bharat Fiber pan-India plans with a lot of plans now offering 300 Mbps speeds, so we might see the average speed increasing on its network in the coming months.

Netflix ISP Speed Index Report for February 2021: What It Suggests

For more than six months, Reliance JioFiber retained the top spot in the Netflix ISP Speed Index report. Even before launching the affordable plans in September 2019, JioFiber had a lead over other ISPs in the industry because of its complete fibre network and high-speed internet.

7 Star Digital, which is one of the popular ISPs in Mumbai, is second on the list, followed by Airtel Xstream Fiber, ACT Fibernet, Excitel Broadband, Spectra and Tata Sky Broadband. It is good to see ISPs like Excitel and Spectra performing consistently in recent times. While Excitel Broadband is offering speeds up to 300 Mbps, Spectra has broadband plans with up to 1 Gbps speeds.

ISP Technology Speed Rank
Jio Giga Fiber Fibre 3.6 Mbps 1
7 Star Digital Wireless|Fibre|Cable 3.4 Mbps 2
Airtel Fibre|DSL 3.4 Mbps 2
Atria Convergence Technologies Fiber 3.4 Mbps 2
Excitel Broadband Fibre|Cable 3.4 Mbps 2
SPECTRA Fibre 3.4 Mbps 2
Tatasky Broadband Fibre 3.4 Mbos 2
Alliance Broadband Fibre 3.2 Mbps 3
D-VoiS Wireless|Fibre|DSL 3.2 Mbps 3
GTPL Fibre|Cable 3.2 Mbps 3
Hathway DSL|Cable 3.2 Mbps 3
One Broadband Fibre|Cable 3.2 Mbps 3
Syscon Infoway Wireless|DSL 3.2 Mbps 3
YOU Broadband Fibre|Cable 3.2 Mbps 3
Tikona Wireless 3 Mbps 4
BSNL Wireless|Fibre|DSL 2.8 Mbps 5
MTNL WIreless|Fibre|DSL 2.4 Mbps 6

At the third spot are Alliance Broadband, D-VoiS, GTPL, Hathway, One Broadband, Syscon Infoway and You Broadband with an average speed of 3.2 Mbps. Tikona is fourth on the list with 3 Mbps speed, followed by BSNL on fifth with 2.8 Mbps average speed and MTNL is at the last position with 2.4 Mbps average speed.

BSNL continues to struggle in the industry because a majority of its subscribers are still using DSL broadband plans. BSNL has just over a million Bharat Fiber customers, so the ISP is required to do some hard work in the coming months to compete with the private ISPs.

As for other details, Netflix says India has achieved an average speed of 3.4 Mbps in the same month. It is placed second on the list alongside other countries like Brazil, Canada, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malaysia, New Zealand, Panama, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal and South Korea. On the top spot are Australia, Belgium, Denmark, Hong Kong, Israel, Netherlands, Norway, Romania, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, United Kingdom and the United States, with a 3.6 Mbps average speed across all the ISPs.
