Airtel Payments Bank Has Over 15 Million Monthly Active Users

Posted: 15 Apr 2021 08:30 AM PDT

airtel-payments-bank-15-million-users

Airtel Payments Bank, the banking and finance business of Bharti Airtel, has now over 15 million monthly active users. The online bank’s services first went live for the users in India back on April 11, 2016. Over the last five years, Airtel has invested a lot of resources into making the Payments Bank a more secure and faster experience for the users.

Much recently, Airtel Payments Bank officially launched the 'Rewards123' savings account for its users to help them earn rewards on the online transactions they make. To upgrade from a normal savings account to a Rewards123 account, users need to pay a nominal fee of Rs 299 per year.

According to an ET Telecom report, Chairman of Bharti Airtel, Sunil Bharti Mittal, in the Amazon Sambhav Summit 2021, said that Airtel Payments Bank is making good progress in the rural parts, tier-2, and tier-3 cities of India.

Bharti Airtel Added More Users Than Competition in Last 9 Months

Mittal said that Airtel has seen the worst multiple times and yet survived. The Indian business tycoon recalled the 2003-04 period when Airtel almost shut down and then in 2016 when Jio disrupted the telecom market with its free services and subsidised plans, due to which several companies had to close shops.

Amidst all the noise and hardships, Airtel survived and managed to grow its market share, brand index, and brand loyalty. Mittal said that Airtel has been adding more subscribers than its competition (Jio) for the last eight to nine months. The telco has been phenomenal in handling customers and providing a strong network experience.

Mittal said that despite dealing with 'near-death experiences', Airtel is in a very healthy shape today. He was proud of the fact that Airtel managed to raise up to $12 billion in the last four to five years, even though it was one of its hardest periods. Mittal believes that it was Airtel's commitment and credibility which allowed the telco to raise all this money.

Bharti Airtel recently created a new company structure wherein the telecom business, along with all the digital assets of the company, have moved under Bharti Airtel Limited. The Airtel Payments Bank will, however, remain a separate entity from the telecom business and will play a major role in providing e-finance services to the people of India in the coming years.

Ericsson and MediaTek have joined hands to create something which is going to be a jaw-dropping innovation. In the wake of achieving high downloading speeds in 5G technologies, both the companies have been working to make a 5G dual connectivity breakthrough which is going to merge the coverage of sub-6Hz bands with a millimetre wave on a commercial chipset. In the recent demo, the companies have achieved speeds of up to 5.1 Gbps by connecting a single device to frequencies in the sub-6 GHz and mmWave with the help of dual connectivity. Let's have a closer look at the new results achieved by both partners.

Ericsson and MediaTek Achieved 5.1 Gbps  5G Speed

According to a release from Ericsson, the companies combined 800 MHz of high-band spectrum and 60 MHz of mid-band spectrum to achieve these high speeds. The companies are claiming that this is the first time a millimetre wave (mmWave) has been tested on a 5G Standalone (SA) mode combined with a mid-band spectrum.

The 5G dual connectivity test is also known as New Radio (NR) DC. It was performed in the mmWave chamber. As per the report, the signal was sent over the air to a device with a MediaTek M80 5G modem with the help of Ericsson’s Radio System hardware and 5G Core. The demonstration shows that this combination can achieve a speed of up to 5.1Gbps internet speed.

On this successful demonstration JS Pan, general manager of wireless communication system and partnership at MediaTek stated that the collaboration between the two companies turned out to be fruitful. He added that the NR Dual Connectivity is one of the latest 5G technology developments which is going to contribute to next-gen 5G services, growing capacity, and a lot more.

The demonstration also revealed the capabilities of the MediaTek M80 5G modem. As per the report, NR DC is empowered by signalling high peak rate support in Ericsson's 5G Core. The company has run carrier aggregation to merge eight 100 Mhz carriers (total of 800 Mhz mmWave) with a 28 GHz band. The second node consists of a 60 MHz mid-band channel at 3.7 GHz. The company claims that the NR DC will be commercially available in the third quarter of this year. It would be interesting to see more experiments like this that are capable of contributing to the next-gen 5G technology.

5G Will Soon Be Leveraged by Indian Defence Forces

Posted: 15 Apr 2021 02:13 AM PDT

5g-indian-defence-forces

Indian army, air force, and navy are all eager to leverage the power of 5G networks to up the ante of technology used for defending the country. Especially, the increasing role of artificial intelligence (AI) and unmanned vehicles in the army has put 5G in the limelight.

Ajay Kumar from the Ministry of Defence (MoD) told ET Telecom that armed forces would soon need to migrate to 5G networks if they want to make efficient use of unmanned vehicles and AI. He said that the ministry is already wary of the immediate need of 5G and is taking the necessary steps that will be required to implement the next-generation connectivity technology into the concerned ecosystem.

Countries such as China have already started using 5G for their armed forces. The US Department of Defense had also announced a $600 million budget for conducting 5G experiments and tests at select military sites.

Defence Needs Separate Set of Spectrum

Rakesh Malhotra, a telecom consultant, said that the government would have to provide the army with a separate set of new frequencies in highly efficient bands for providing confidentiality on communications. He said that the spectrum required for defence applications and protocols must be different from the one provided commercially to the general public.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had said that the telcos would be provided with frequencies in the 3300-3600 MHz band for rolling out 5G services. Note that the MoD held 100 MHz of spectrum in the concerned band upon the time of the announcement. Upon several discussions with DoT, the MoD finally vacated the frequencies for the telcos to roll out 5G.

Kumar further said that the equipment must be sourced from trusted sources. The government has appointed the National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC) as the designated body to oversee all the equipment and gear that the telcos purchase. NCSC is responsible for creating a list of 'trusted' companies through which telecom equipment for rolling out 5G and expanding 4G can be purchased in India.

India is still yet to launch a single commercial 5G network, and the spectrum auctions are still far away. Airtel might surprise everyone by being the first operator to launch non-standalone (NSA) 5G network in India.

Germany Announces Initial Funding of 200 Million Euros for 6G Research

Posted: 15 Apr 2021 01:32 AM PDT

germany-200-million-euros-6g

Germany has started investing money into researching technologies based on 6G connectivity. The German government has announced a sum of 700 million Euros ($833 million) for the research on 6G, which will be invested by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) by 2025.

This will make it the first step of Germany towards 6G. Germany’s Federal Research Minister, Anja Karliczek, while explaining the country’s optimistic plan about future communication technologies, informed that the country is all set to create infrastructure for 6G technology. She further said that the digital transformation had emphasised the need for a stronger network infrastructure.

Knowing that 4G technology cannot be leveraged any further and 5G has already taken a big leap, Karliczek said 6G would be the future of mobile data technology and revolutionise our communication in the next decade.

5G is already an absolute upgrade of 4G because 5G uses a millimetre-wave spectrum which allows it to connect to more devices and to provide 10 times faster speed than 4G. However, with 6G, data is transmitted more than 100 times faster than 5G.

Initial Funding of 200 Million Euros on Offer for 6G Research

Explaining further, Karliczek said this investment would be the basis of the technological sovereignty of Europe and Germany. To strengthen this sovereignty, Germany needs to invest in advance.

The minister also said the initial funding would be 200 million Euros while further initiatives will be announced later.

These investments have become possible because of the future package/reserve of the federal government, and the first investment will go into the 6G research program, making the country technologically advanced for the next generation of mobile networks.

The initial project will aim at creating 6G research hubs and boosting collaboration with research institutes and universities.

Germany will compete with Chinese telecommunications company Huawei, which plans to launch 6G services in China by 2030. Huawei will soon share a white sheet on 6G so that the industry can understand what 6G really is and how it will change the way people look at connectivity.

While China and Germany are already competing low-key on the 6G front, many countries worldwide are still struggling to launch 5G networks within their boundaries.

RCom and Aircel’s Resolution Plans in Trouble After NCLAT Judgement

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 11:51 PM PDT

rcom-aircels-resolution-plans-trouble

Much recently, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) said that the telcos under insolvency process or Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) can't 'use or transfer' their spectrum until the time they have cleared all government dues.

Because of the decision, RCom and Aircel's resolution plans have taken a hit. According to an ET Telecom report, the lenders of Aircel and the UV Asset Reconstruction Company Limited (UVARCL) might approach the Supreme Court (SC) to oversee the NCLAT judgement.

For the unaware, UVARCL is the resolution company that will take over the assets of Aircel and RCom under the insolvency process. The lenders led by the State Bank of India (SBI) and UVARCL fear that their resolution plans will not go as planned if they aren't allowed to sell the spectrum owned by the two companies.

Spectrum Sale Would Generate Big Amounts For the Companies

The lenders hoped to recover around 25,000 to 30,000 crores from the resolution plans of Aircel and RCom under IBC against their total claims of Rs 1,16,000 crores.

For the unaware, Aircel and RCom owe the government about Rs 38,000 only in the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, where Aircel owes Rs 12,389 crores and RCom owes Rs 26,000 crores, respectively. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is further looking to get Rs 14,000 crores from Aircel as an operational creditor for defaults on timely payments and also for the right to use spectrum.

But ideally, in the waterfall arrangement, financial creditors are prioritised over operational creditors. Hence, DoT might not get anything here if the case goes to the SC. UVARCL's plans for Aircel includes payment of only Rs 28.50 crores, i.e., 0.16% of the total claims of Rs 17,462 crores for the operational creditors.

If the telcos aren't allowed to sell the spectrum, they will be forced to go towards liquidation. When that happens, the lenders will be hit massively, amongst which SBI, which loaned Rs 12,000 crores to Aircel and RCom, will be hurt the most.

UVARCL was expecting to generate the biggest chunk of amounts by selling the spectrum of Aircel in the 1800 MHz and 2100 MHz bands for anything between Rs 800 to Rs 1,300 crores.

One telco that remains unharmed despite the decision ruled by NCLAT is Videocon. Since the telco transferred its spectrum in the 1800 MHz bands to Airtel back in 2016, it doesn't fall into the purview of the recent NCLAT order.

The SC had also asked the same question during the AGR case and left the decision to NCLAT last year.

Mavenir and Xilinx Working Together to Enhance 5G Network Capacity

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 09:30 PM PDT

mavenir-xilinx-enhance-5g-network

On Tuesday, Semiconductor firm Xilinx Inc and telecommunications software firm Mavenir Inc joined hands for boosting cellphone tower capacity for open 5G networks.

Previously, telcos used to purchase hardware and software as an integrated package from suppliers such as Nokia, Ericsson, China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, and more global vendors.

But now, the market of US telecom has been disrupted by the restrictions imposed by the government on Huawei, one of the major telecom vendors of the nation. This has forced telcos to buy from different vendors such as Xilinx and Mavenir for saving costs and purchasing more parts.

But there is a shortcoming in the features of new vendors as compared to the features provided by traditional equipment makers. Feature such as the ability to fit multiple antennas into the radio unit at the top of a tower to enhance its capacity cannot be provided on the new open networks. It is called the MIMO technology, which means multiple-input, multiple-output.

Mavenir and Xilinx Plan to Build New Chipsets For Overcoming the Issue

Both the companies have assured the telcos that they will provide the required chips and software for the open 5G network to implement the MIMO technology.

The vice president of Mavenir, Job Benson, said that the companies are also ready to provide the completed technology at the same time as traditional equipment makers.

Benson also said that this move would allow carriers to diversify their network and offer more advanced solutions while saving costs at the same time.

Mavenir's AI-on-5G Solution

Mavenir is also moving fast on the 5G front. The telecom software company recently announced its AI-on-5G solution, which is aimed to help several sectors of the industry in creating a smarter work environment. The convergence of 5G stacks and AI will help the companies implement newer generation applications and hardware to support industry 4.0 applications for the manufacturing and production of goods and services.

5G will be able to bring out the true potential of AI, which traditional local-area networks (LAN) or 4G networks can’t do. Thus the AI-on-5G solution from Mavenir stands to benefit the manufacturing industry in a great deal.

Huawei to Launch 6G in China by 2030: Report

Posted: 14 Apr 2021 08:30 PM PDT

huawei-launch-6g-in-china-2030

Huawei, a Chinese telecom equipment manufacturing company, is set to launch 6G in China by 2030. While the nations worldwide are still thinking about setting up 5G networks, China's Huawei is looking a step ahead and is planning for 6G.

According to a CGTN report, Xu Zhijun, the rotating chairman of Huawei, has said that the company will launch its first commercial 6G network in the country by 2030. Further, he said that Huawei's 6G would be 50 times faster than 5G.

Huawei Will Release White Paper for 6G to Help Industry Understand What It Is

While it is understandable that 6G will be the connectivity platform that will overtake 5G, many don't understand how exactly it will work or look like. Thus, the company has said that it will reveal a white paper on 6G to help the industry understand what it really is.

It is worth noting that Huawei's 5G is steps ahead of the same technology offered by the other global companies. With the first operator to make research and advancements in 6G, Huawei stands a chance to dominate the global telecom market.

Xu Zhijun made the remarks on 6G at Huawei global analysts conference in Shenzhen, south China’s Guangdong Province. According to the deputy dean of the School of Information at Tsinghua University, Cui Baoguo, a 6G network’s speed is expected to reach up to 1,000 Gbps.

Not only that, but the 6G network would have a delay of 0.1 ms-meter/second. So it would not only be faster but would also offer lesser delays. Experts believe that 6G would transcend the way people look at connectivity and that the super-fast speed would only be a byproduct of the technology.

However, Huawei is losing out on a huge amount of meaningful business worldwide because of its market perception. Governments across the globe are worried about including Huawei in their 5G projects because of the company's alleged ties with the Chinese government. India is one such country, and the Indian government has asked the telcos to not award any new projects to not only Huawei but any Chinese vendor or gear maker.

In case you are not aware, 5G standalone is an extensive and more complete form of 5G network, which is the architecture of all 5G networks. The commercialisation of the first 5G SA network in Europe marks a new achievement in the development of 5G in the region. As reported by 5Gradar, the theoretical latency of 5G SA is as low as 1ms that is better than the NSA 5G network that has a latency of around 20ms.

Gerhard Mack, CTO of Vodafone Germany, said that at initial levels, the company strives to achieve latency times of 10 to 15 milliseconds which is faster than the human nervous system. As Vodafone puts more 5G facilities operation, these low latency times are arriving for customers. The first smartphone that will support the technology will be Oppo Find X3 Pro. The SA 5G network will be rolled out in Leipzig, Dusseldorf and Munster with network slicing and multiple benefits of the enhanced network. Also, the network slicing will enable the telco to provide diversified services for multiple needs.

DishNXT HD STB Features, Price, and More

DishNXT HD STB can be availed by the users for a mere cost of Rs 1,347. It is the starting price of the HD STB from Dish TV. Note that users don't have to pay anything extra for subscribing to a channel pack.

When the users pay Rs 1,347 to the operator, the operator provides them with the DishNXT HD STB with a free subscription of the 'Super Family HD' pack. For the unaware, the standalone cost of the channel pack is Rs 435 (GST included). With the Super Family HD pack, users get more than 299 channels which also include 12 HD channels.

Users can also get the DishNXT HD STB with a channel pack for longer-term. There is an option to pay Rs 1,652 for the same STB and get the free channel pack for 3 months. Under this plan, users will get a free subscription to the 'Swagat HD' pack for 3 months. Further, the three months plan is also available for six months, under which users get the subscription of the same channel pack but for a cost of Rs 2,245.

Dish TV has highlighted that the 1-month and 6-months offers are available for a limited period only. Do note that none of the prices mentioned above includes GST, so you will have to pay 18% more on the cost mentioned above.

Also, note that the STB and channel combo mentioned above is for users going for the Hindi channels. However, the total cost of purchasing the STB with a channel pack in varied languages is either the same or very little different.

One of the best things about purchasing the Dish TV STB is a quick service. The company said that it would install the connection in under four hours from the time you make the purchase online.

The Dish TV STBs are available to be purchased from the official website of the company. The company is even offering demo services to the people interested in testing out its services. Further, on purchase of the STB, users get coupons worth Rs 2,000 from CouponDuniya.

You can even opt for a Dish TV connection with another channel pack than the one company provides when users are purchasing the connection. On top of that, users have the convenience of choosing whether they want a connection that comes with the antenna or the one without it.

Note that in either of the cases, the charges for the STB are the same. Dish TV users also get the option of watching free content from the streaming platform known as 'Watcho'.
