OnePlus Watch Comes With ‘SpO2’, What is it and Why is it Important

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 08:00 AM PDT

oneplus-watch-spo2-understand

Numerous smartphone brands have recently jumped into the fitness tracker segment and launched smartwatches with highly promising features. OnePlus is also one such brand that entered the segment last year, and now it has launched its OnePlus Watch alongside the launch of its flagship smartphones.

The health tracker comes with an array of features, including a real-time heart rate sensor, SpO2, sleep monitoring, and more. Heart-rate sensors and sleep monitoring sensors are still understandable for many of us, but do you know what a SpO2 sensor is and how it works? If not, then you are at the right place. In this article, we have explained almost everything about the sensor. Keep reading to know more about the SpO2 sensor.

What is SpO2?

In simple words, the SpO2 sensor is capable of measuring your blood oxygen level. The human body needs oxygen to survive, which means that higher SpO2 levels are good for us. If you have lower levels of SpO2 means, you have symptoms of Hypoxemia. According to the reports, 95%-99% is a normal reading for SpO2.

How does the OnePlus Watch Measures SpO2 levels?

Fitness trackers like the OnePlus Watch are capable of measuring SpO2 levels in a similar way to how a heart-rate monitor works. The device uses a highly sensitive photodetector that is capable of seeing the haemoglobin in the user's blood vessels. Smartwatches like the OnePlus Watch uses the reflectance pulse oximetry technique to measure SpO2 levels.

In simple words, in this method, the device projects the infrared and red light to the user’s body surface and the light reflected from the subcutaneous tissue to the sensor. The blood oxygen level is determined between the release and reflection of light. However, do note that this is accurate to a certain level; that's the only reason manufacturers claim that their devices should not be used for medical diagnosis.

Why are SpO2 Levels Important for Users?

Higher SpO2 levels are important for all the users, but it matters widely for two types of users – Athletes and people with health conditions. Athletes keep an eye on SpO2 levels because while training, their body needs more oxygen, and the demand for oxygen impacts their training sessions. People who take altitude training need to monitor their SpO2 levels because it’s difficult for them to extract the exact amount of oxygen in high or low altitudes. Studies suggest that oxygen levels at sea level are around 21%, but they can drop up to 15% when you cross the threshold of 3000 meters.

SpO2 monitor will be a great help for people having medical conditions like sleep apnea. It is a condition where people wake up at irregular intervals during the night due to difficulty in breathing. Smartwatch with this feature can monitor the movement during sleep, and it can alert the users about the problem and allow them to take necessary action.

Jio Might Use Samsung’s Latest 5G Radio Solution for Mid-Band Spectrum

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 07:00 AM PDT

Samsung has developed new generation 5G wideband radios that will be able to support the mid-band spectrum more efficiently. The new generation radios can support expanded bandwidth, including Massive MIMO radios.

Reliance Jio, the top telecom operator in India, stands a chance to benefit the most of out Samsung's latest generation 5G radios for the mid-band spectrum.

The new radios will help the operators deploy 5G in a more cost-effective way. Samsung said that its new generation wideband radios could support bandwidth in the 400 MHz spectrum, which is double compared to the 200 MHz spectrum its current-generation commercial radios can support.

With the double bandwidth support, operators using Samsung's new generation radios will be able to effectively utilise the mid-band spectrum for their 5G networks.

Samsung New Generation 5G Radios Will Help Operators Rollout Cost-Effective Networks

With the new generation 5G radios, operators will be able to efficiently manage the network in the mid-band spectrum efficiently using lesser hardware. The telcos will be required to use fewer radios in several deployment situations if they are using Samsung's Massive MIMO radios.

Operators who are actively sharing their network infrastructure with other operators (RAN Sharing) can also utilise the latest 5G radio solution developed by Samsung. For the unaware, mid-band frequencies help telcos deliver better coverage, high internet speeds with less latency.

Samsung's new 5G radio technology is all set to help telcos roll out their 5G networks faster and in an efficient manner. It will bring the overall cost of network deployment down since operators would be able to manage their network effectively and efficiently with lesser radios.

Samsung has announced that its new wideband radio solutions for 5G will be commercially available for the operators from 2022.

Reliance Jio purchased a lot of equipment from Samsung for its 4G network rollout across the country. Samsung might supply Jio with its latest 5G radio solution, which will help the telco in rolling out its next-generation connectivity network faster.

Jio has said that it will roll out homegrown 5G. In case Samsung is able to manufacture its equipment locally, it might be the best partner for Jio in helping it rollout 5G faster.

Mukesh Ambani has said that Reliance Jio will roll out its 5G network in the second half of 2021. Looking at the current scenario of the market, it feels highly unlikely that it will happen. However, the telco does have the option of using the dynamic spectrum sharing technology the way Airtel tested its 5G in Hyderabad.

Note that no official statement or confirmation from Jio on the matter has come yet. Based on the relationship that Samsung and Jio share, it can be assumed that they end up working together for rolling out 5G in India.

Indians Request More Features And Better Speed From Web Browser

Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest platform in mid March, 2021, released the Speedtest Global Index for February, with the data highlighting that India retained its 131st position on the mobile Index. According to the data released by Ookla, India recorded an average mobile download and upload speed of 12.40 Mbps and 4.75 Mbps respectively in February. Ookla said that the global average download speed on mobile increased to 46.94 Mbps in February while the global average upload speed on mobile continued to remain at 12.49 Mbps. The Speedtest Global Index for mobile covers 141 countries across the globe with 10 countries including Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania, Sudan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Venezuela, Palestine, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan recording lower speeds on mobile than India.

Mobile is Primary Way of Accessing Internet: Vivaldi CEO

Ookla data also highlights that India gained two positions on the Speedtest Global Index for fixed broadband with the country now placed 63rd on the index. The company said that India recorded average download and upload speeds of 55.34 Mbps and 52.15 Mbps respectively on fixed broadband in February. However, it has to be noted that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) in its Telecom Subscription Data said that India has 22.67 million wired broadband subscribers as on January 31, 2021. In comparison, the Trai data highlights that over 734 million users access high speed data on mobile phones and dongles.

Similarly, the data released by Trai on its MySpeed Portal also highlight that the wireless operators in India on average recorded download speeds between 7 Mbps to 15.4 Mbps in February.

Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Vivaldi Technologies, the company behind the Vivaldi browser, told TelecomTalk that "browser matters a lot" in countries like India where such low speeds are recorded.

"One part of that is the privacy features, which can also make the browser faster. Blocking trackers and ads can lead to faster loading of pages," von Tetzchner said in an email interview. "In addition, better tab handling can make it easier to multitask, so you are not just working serially. That can make a massive difference in your browsing as you can read one page while loading another."

Von Tetzchner said that the features like bookmarks can "make a huge difference as well." The CEO of Vivaldi said that "with better bookmarking," the users would need "less clicks to find back to important content."

In early 2015, Vivaldi Technologies rolled out the first preview of its desktop browser with the company launching its first stable build in April 2016. The company in late 2019 rolled out its first snapshot build of its Android browser with the first stable version making its debut in April 2020. Vivaldi is said to have over 2.2 million active users with India among its top 10 countries in terms of its user base and is said to be "more skewed towards the browser on Android."

"We understand that for many in India and across the world, the mobile is their primary way of accessing the Internet," von Tetzchner said. "Thus we make sure the browser can work as a real tool and not just a toy."

Mobile Accounts for 50% Web Traffic

In November 2020, Statista, a German company engaged in market and consumer data said that the mobile devices accounted for over 50% of the overall web traffic for the fifth consecutive quarter.

The CEO of Vivaldi Technologies said that the requests made by the Indian users include "more features and better speed" and that the company is working on both the requests.

"Indian users are demanding and that is what we like," von Tetzchner said. "We focus a lot on features that make you more effective with your browser, both on your PC and on your phone. All of this is very useful on a slow network."

While Vivaldi has been in the market for a few years now, the company is relatively new as compared to most of its rivals. Von Tetzchner said that the company has been "making good progress" and that it "takes time to build a browser market share."

"Our feeling is that our feature set is unique in many ways," von Tetzchner said. "We have real tabs, which makes it easier to work with a lot of tabs on a phone. Many people are not even aware of the tabs they have open, while we make them more visible."

Meanwhile, the CEO of Vivaldi Technologies said that the iOS version of the Vivaldi mobile browser is "still some time away."

"Not a lot of work has been done there so far," von Tetzchner said. "It requires a lot of work to port Vivaldi to iOS. In many ways it is like writing the browser from scratch and we have a huge feature set that is growing."

PUBG Mobile Might Come Back to India Very Soon: Report

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 03:17 AM PDT

pubg-mobile-come-back-india-soon

PUBG Mobile might make its comeback in India very soon. The game was banned because of security and privacy reasons last year. Later, the PUBG Mobile India version was announced without affiliations with Tencent, but even that couldn't launch in India simply because the government deemed it that way.

According to Luv Sharma, a content creator of PUBG Mobile, the game is all set to come back to India. The Indian government is considering the relaunch of the game. However, no confirmed date for the game has been announced or hinted at yet.

PUBG Mobile India Comeback in the Cards

Looking at a tweet from Andhare, a member of the TSM eSports team, a lot of good news will come for PUBG Mobile lovers in the next two months. He further said that the Indian government had given a 'green signal' to PUBG Mobile for relaunch in India.

Note that none of the comments come directly from a government official related to the matter. Thus nothing's confirmed yet.

Sean Hyunil Sohn, head of corporate development at Krafton, said that the company cares a lot about the Indian market and now also has some friends inside the Indian gaming industry. He assured that Krafton would work hard in relaunching the game back in India.

Even though Sohn’s words suggest that Krafton cares a lot about the Indian market, it is surprising that Krafton didn't avail the pre-registration option in India for its another game in works called PUBG: New State.

In other news, Krafton has decided not to let Indian players enjoy PUBG Mobile Korean version. The company has announced that post-July 1, 2021, all access to PUBG Mobile Korea will be shut down for users outside Japan and Korea.

Due to the ban, Indian users download the APK file of the PUBG Korea version. However, even the APK file won't work for Indian players post-July 1, 2021.

LG K33 Spotted on Bluetooth SIG Certification: Ray of Hope For LG

Posted: 02 Apr 2021 01:36 AM PDT

lg-k33-bluetooth-sig-certification

LG seems to be gearing up to expand its smartphone line up with the launch of its upcoming LG K33 smartphone. So far, we haven't heard about the handset, and there is almost no information about it. However, a popular tipster Mukul Sharma has shared a Twitter post claiming that the LG K33 has been spotted on the Bluetooth SIG certification. Here is a closer look at the LG K33 Bluetooth SIG certification.

LG K33 Bluetooth SIG certification

According to the tipster, the LG K33 has been listed on Bluetooth SIG certification with model number LG-K330HM, LG-K330BMW, LG-K330HMW, and LG-K330EMW. The listing date of the smartphone seems to be April 1st, 2021. Besides the name and model numbers, the listing doesn’t reveal anything about the upcoming LG K33 smartphone.

LG is speculated to shut down its mobile phone business. The company was in talks with Vingroup JSC from Vietnam and Volkswagen AG from Germany for selling its mobile business. However, it was reported that the company was unable to break any deal with either of the buyers.

However, LG is yet to reveal anything officially about the launch of the phone or shutdown of the business. It is expected to announce the future of the smartphone business this month.

It's a big possibility that you will not be able to see new LG smartphones after some time if the company decides to shut down the smartphone business. But the LG K33 Bluetooth SIG certification seems like a ray of hope that the company is still working on something. There will be possibilities that the news about shutting down the business is just speculation.

Do note that LG is yet to make any official statement about shutting down its smartphone business. We recommend everyone take this information with a pinch of salt and wait for the official announcement.

Airtel Plans to Meet 50% Power Needs at Data Centres With Renewable Energy

bharti-airtel-reduces-carbon-footprint

In its mission to keep Earth safe and global warming at bay, Bharti Airtel has commissioned a new solar power plant for fulling its energy needs and requirements.

The development has taken place in Uttar Pradesh, India. The telco will be leveraging its new 14 MWp solar power plant to meet energy requirements at its data centres in the state. Airtel will set up two power plants in partnership with AMP Energy.

Out of the two, the first one is being set up in Tilhar (Shahjahanpur, U.P.). Airtel will set up the second solar power plant at Begampur, which is expected to start operating from the next quarter.

With the help of these solar power plants, Airtel will be able to take a step ahead towards its vision of going green. The telco will manage to reduce its carbon footprint massively with the recent move.

To be conscious of nature, Bharti Airtel had earlier acquired a minority stake of 26% in the AMP Solar Evolution. The companies will together work to develop green-energy based solutions.

Airtel to Power Data Centres With Solar Power

Data Centres are going to be pivotal at the coming age of 5G and will further require a ton of power to stay live. Going ahead with solar energy to power the data centres is a really smart move from Bharti Airtel.

'Nxtra by Airtel' operates 120 edge and 10 big data centres across India. The company's goal is to get 50% of its power requirements through renewable sources of energy. It will help with Airtel's larger vision of reducing carbon footprint from the planet.

Airtel has been able to perform really well when it came to average Carbon Emission reduction (Co2/PB). Its Co2/PB for FY20 was ~114% from the base year 2011-12 against the Department of Telecommunication's (DoT) recommendation of 30%.

In the details shared, Airtel says that the energy produced by the solar power plants for the data centres is equal to powering 3,738 homes for one year.

Trai Activates New SMS Regulation System, Everything to Know

Posted: 01 Apr 2021 11:24 PM PDT

trai-new-sms-regulation-system

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) yesterday released a circular informing about the activation of new SMS regulations. For the unaware, the new regulations are a part of the Telecom Commercial Communications Customer Preference Regulations (TCCCPR) order released on July 18, 2018.

As per the rule, the telcos will verify and scrub through every SMS that a verified or registered business/institution is trying to send its customers. If the SMS template isn't registered, it will be blocked.

The regulatory provisions for SMSes are introduced to reduce the amount of spam and fraudulent messages that are sent to the people of India every day. The telcos will leverage a blockchain system to scrub through the SMSes and will block every message that doesn't fulfil the regulatory obligations.

The new SMS regulations have been activated since April 1, 2021, as per a Trai order. It is worth noting that last month, on March 8, Trai had to intervene and relax the SMS regulations since millions of important messages from businesses and banks were blocked for the customers.

The regulator had asked the telcos to keep scrubbing the SMSes but not block them until directed otherwise. An earlier statement from Trai revealed that big banks and businesses such as SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, LIC, and Samsung were on the list of defaulters who hadn't followed the regulations.

Trai has been at the forefront, asking the businesses to follow the SMS regulations, but it seems like the businesses are facing a lot of hardships when it comes to registering with new templates.

Multiple businesses have made a case that millions of SMS templates flow in every day; thus, it is not a 'one-time compliance' act for them. It will require a lot of time, and thus it is wrong of the regulator to block their messages if they don't meet the new regulations.

No Major Issues With SMS Regulations, Says Trai

The Trai circular details that the operators saw no 'major issue' with the implementation of the new SMS regulations in India. There were a few odd cases, but apart from that, everything went smoothly.

This is good news not only for the banks and businesses but also the end customer, who had to face the biggest issues with not getting OTPs, important information, and more. The SMS delivery rate was not what it used to be during late Thursday, but it is better than what happened back on March 8, 2021.

With time, more businesses should be able to adapt to the regulations, and the SMS delivery rate will shoot back up.

All the private operators, including Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Reliance Jio, provide their users with prepaid plans that come with the benefit of Disney+ Hotstar. Do note that none of the operators offers the Disney+ Hotstar Premium benefit, but only the Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit with their plans.

For the unaware, the annual subscription cost of Disney+ Hotstar VIP is only Rs 399, whereas the Disney+ Hotstar Premium costs Rs 1,499 annually. With the Disney+ Hotstar VIP subscription, users can't access all the premium English and Hindi content on the platform.

Jio and Airtel offered plans with Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit since last year. Even Vi joined the party recently and started offering the over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP with three of its plans.

Let's look at all these plans and compare them to find out which operator provides the best offerings.

Vodafone Idea Disney+ Hotstar VIP Prepaid Plans

Vi offers three prepaid plans with Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit. The cheapest of the three costs Rs 401 and provides users with unlimited voice calling, 3GB daily data + 16GB bonus data and 100 SMS/day for 28 days.

The second plan costs Rs 601 and offers unlimited voice calling, 3GB daily data + 32GB bonus data, and 100 SMS/day for 56 days.

Lastly, the third plan costs Rs 801 and offers users unlimited voice calling, 3GB daily data + 48GB bonus data, and 100 SMS/day for 84 days.

Note that all of the plans mentioned above also come with Vi's 'Weekend Data Rollover' and 'Binge all Night' offer. Further, users get free access to Vi Movies & TV VIP.

Reliance Jio Disney+ Hotstar VIP Prepaid Plans

Reliance Jio offers a total of four prepaid plans with the benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit. These plans cost Rs 401, Rs 598, Rs 777, and Rs 2,599, respectively.

All of the plans offer unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day to the users. But their data benefits and validity period differ.

The Rs 401 plan offers users 3GB daily data + 6GB bonus data for only 28 days. The Rs 777 plan provides users with 1.5GB daily data + 5GB bonus data for 84 days. Both Rs 598 and Rs 2,599 plans offer 2GB daily data to the users for 56 and 365 days, respectively. The Rs 2,599 plan further offers 10GB bonus data to the users.

Note that all the plans include a complimentary subscription to all the Jio apps.

Bharti Airtel Disney+ Hotstar VIP Prepaid Plans

Bharti Airtel offers three unlimited data and voice benefits prepaid plans that offer Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit. There is also a data-only voucher that comes with the concerned OTT benefit, but we are excluding it from the list because it is different in nature from the plans listed above.

The three plans from Airtel that provide Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit costs Rs 448, Rs 599, and Rs 2,698, respectively.

These plans come with truly unlimited voice calling, 100 SMS/day, and Airtel Thanks benefits. The Rs 448 voucher offers users 3GB daily data for 28 days, while both the Rs 599 and Rs 2,698 vouchers provide users with 2GB daily data for 56 days and 365 days, respectively.

Note that all the prepaid plans also offer users a free 1 month trial of Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition.

Verdict

To conclude, if the competition is between plans that offer validity up to 84 days, there is no way Airtel and Jio's Disney+ Hotstar VIP prepaid plans can compete with the plans from Vi.

Vi offers more data and other unique offers such as 'Weekend Data Rollover' and 'Binge all night.' However, if the competition is between plans with year-long validity, only Jio and Airtel remain in the arena.

Between the top two operators of the country, Jio's long-term Disney+ Hotstar VIP plan is slightly ahead of Airtel as it offers more data for a lesser price.
