Qualcomm and Vodafone to Collaborate for Open-RAN Development

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 10:32 AM PDT

qualcomm-vodafone-open-ran

Vodafone and Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., a well-known silicon chipset maker for smartphones and other products, announced their collective plans to join forces in a bid to develop the technical blueprint required for more equipment suppliers so as to build 5G networks of the future vis ORAN (Open Radio Access Network) tech.

This move aims to lower the barrier for entering this tech sector for any companies so as to drive diversification within network equipment vendors.

What Is The Aim For This Collaboration?

This collaboration, in particular, is built so that the reference designs can be designed to support established as well as emerging network infrastructure vendors to develop high-performance, modular, virtualised and interoperable 5G networks at scale, with the aim to make infra more competitive.

There is a greater benefit for customers too since Vodafone, and other telcos will be able to mix and match their hardware and software from multiple choices so as to extend their 5G networks better and get access to networks in geographical areas that require them the most.

As of today, where two or more suppliers are being used, each is deployed in a cluster and at points where they meet are often most challenging when it comes to overall performance.

The reference design will see a combination of Vodafone's engineering expertise when it comes to building high capacity, large-scale networks with Qualcomm's leadership in developing both high performance and low power ASIC solutions.

This combination is aimed at ensuring Open RAN's ease of use in 5G networks and the capability of supporting bandwidth-hungry applications such as VR and AR devices, even in urban areas.

The reference designs, which are powered by Qualcomm® Radio Unit Platform complete with Massive MIMO capabilities and Qualcomm® Distributed Unit Platform, are expected to be published later this year, with trials of the same expected to commence in the second half of 2022, post detailed software development.

Massive MIMO, which is a type of smart antenna, is a technique capable of giving more customers a rather faster and reliable mobile connection via a single mast.

Vodafone is also working on smart antenna network configurations of up to 64T64R (64 antennas meant to transmit and 64 meant to receive between the base station and the user's device) in a bid to ensure that there is ample capacity to connect multiple users at any point of the day.

ViU Hub 2.0 by Dialog TV Offers Complete Android TV Experience

viu-hub-2-android-tv-box

The amount of content being consumed rose quite a bit after the lockdown with people spending more time watching television and binging shows as they were restricted to their houses. However, if one did not have a smart television, it would become quite difficult to consume the latest content on the go.

If you were in a similar situation, we have a good alternative for you, called the ViU Hub 2.0. The smart Set-Top Box (STB) is an ideal option for someone who does not own a Smart TV but intends to watch modern content and those who wish to opt for the old style of media consumption.

ViU Hub 2.0 Has a Remote That Can Hear You, Check Other Specifications

viu-hub-2-android-tv-box

The ViU Hub 2.0 Hybrid device is able to seamlessly mix both the modern style of content and the regular Set-Top Box based content consumption. The STB is capable of integrating satellite TV with more than 130 channels and ViU movies with the complete Android TV experience into a single screen.

This in turn will make your TV; both smart or regular into a state of the art, feature-packed Smart TV. Most importantly, unlike some other alternatives, it has a neat trick up its sleeve.

It integrates two different aspects into one device, whereas for any other company, one would be required to purchase either a smart TV or a Smart Stick or a Smart Box to get these functionalities, alongside the regular satellite connection.

The remote is capable of listening to your voice and searching for content via the same, as it is voice-enabled. This aids in overall accessibility, much like alternatives from Google and Amazon.

With Android TV, you will not need to worry about the applications on offer, as you would be able to download over 4000 apps for content consumption and other uses through Google's Play store.

In contrast, the regular functionality makes sure that the user can watch over 130 international and local Dialog TV channels using the Live TV functionalities without any data charges on the Dialog network, excluding the Fibre Network from Dialog.

Additionally, the Rewind TV option allows the user to play or pause and rewind live TV for up to 2 hours, whilst the Catch-up feature helps users view the contents of the previous 72 hours.

There is also support for Chromecast, as it is built-in, meaning you can mirror the content playing on your mobile device with a single click.

Coming to the display based features, the Hub is capable of offering the option of 4K content, through which users will be able to enjoy bright, clear and contrasty content.

ViU Hub 2.0 Price

The ViU Hub is available in two price brackets, one at Rs 7,990 for a new connection. Users wishing to upgrade their older connections from Dialog TV can pay the same amount, but it is reduced to Rs 1,990 for users who are part of the company's Gold Package and Club Vision.

For those of you wondering, the Gold Package is priced at a discounted cost of Rs 3,990 with an exclusive Rs 1,000 cashback offer, which will be added to the user's monthly bill once 12 months are completed on the network.

The package offers 128 channels, including 10 HD channels and comes with free installation, 24×7 customer support and active additional channels of the users choice. Monthly rentals are priced at Rs 2,099.

Google To Add UPI Over NFC Feature To Google Pay

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 08:07 AM PDT

upi-over-google-pay-nfc

Google's Google Pay app is one of the most important and most used digital payment systems within the country. The app makes use of a UPI or Unified Payments Interface to allow for direct bank-to-bank transfers.

The application is now adding support for making UPI based payments over NFC, as per a new report. For those of you unaware, this is not the first time that Google is announcing an NFC based payment feature with the support being available using tokenised cards running via NFC.

This service works in countries that do not have a UPI system; however, seeing as to how the cards that have this support are offered by a small list of banks, Google has now decided to put the pre-existing NFC chip on your phone to good use (given that you have NFC on your device).

What Does The Document Mention?

Users who are currently using Google Pay in India are required to make use of either a manual key or their UPI ID registered under the recipient. Another option is to scan QR codes.

Both methods take time, whilst shops that are dimly lit might cause some issues. Google is now pushing for a rather intuitive solution in the form of UPI over NFC, as was spotted by Android Police.

As per the accompanying support document, the company is expected to be rolling out the feature to devices that house an NFC chip within themselves so as to make it a bit easier when it comes to payments.

This saves a lot of time as, instead of having to wait for the person in front to switch on their camera and scan the QR code, you will now be able to simply tap your device on the terminal meant for payment and see the popup, showcasing the payment screen that requires your UPI pin.

Do note that one needs to keep a few things in mind before they run out to try it. First, only Pine Labs terminals are supported as of now and second; you need to have NFC on the phones.

Additionally, the user needs to make sure that to use their NFC based UPI payment feature; they should not modify their phones by custom ROMs or rooting, as these services will not run on such devices for security-related reasons.

Samsung Galaxy Buds2 Might Ditch ANC and Launch on June

Back in March, it was reported that the South Korean tech giant Samsung is looking forward to soon launching a new pair of truly wireless earbuds, which is tipped to be known as the Galaxy Buds2. Now in the latest development, new details about the earbuds have surfaced on the web, along with the launch timeline and the price of the upcoming Galaxy Buds2. Emerging tipster Yogesh has shared the details in collaboration with MobileSyrup. Let's have a closer look at the rumoured price, launch date, and features of the upcoming alleged Galaxy Buds2.

Galaxy Buds2 Leak

As per the tipster, the upcoming Galaxy Buds2 is expected to arrive with a similar design as the Galaxy Buds+. However, the patent image shared by the leakster suggests that the case of the upcoming TWS is slightly larger than the existing one. This means that the battery compartment may be improved by the company, and we can expect a better battery performance.

Coming to the pricing part, the Mobilesyrup report claims that the upcoming pair of truly wireless earphones are expected to compete with sub USD 100 earbuds. Long story short, the Galaxy Buds2 is tipped to be cheaper than the Galaxy Buds+. Further, the report also claims that the Buds2 will not arrive with the Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) feature and might not have the 360-degree audio output. These features are available on the Galaxy Buds Pro.

According to the tipster, the Samsung Galaxy Buds2 is expected to launch in June, and the device is said to be available for sale in the pastel colour option. The colour options seem to match the recently launched Galaxy A series smartphones.

Going with the previous reports, the Galaxy Buds2 is codenamed 'berry' and is expected to launch with multiple device connection support. Moreover, it’s expected that this feature will be compatible with non-Samsung products. Meanwhile, do note that the company is yet to reveal anything about the upcoming alleged Galaxy Buds2, and all this information doesn’t have any concrete pieces of evidence. It’s recommendable to take this with a pinch of salt.

COAI, TAIPA Caution Public Against Fake Mobile Tower Installation

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:23 AM PDT

coai-taipa-mobile-tower-fraud

The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) and the Tower and Infrastructure Providers Association (TAIPA) are warning the public against the fake mobile tower installation that's been going on in the country. The fraudsters are approaching the general public and asking them to allow the installation of mobile towers on their premises.

These are certain companies and individuals who genuinely approach the public and take their permission to install fake mobile towers in their homes. For doing the same, the fraudsters are also asking for a deposit from the home or premises owners for tax purposes in the name of leasing the property. To make it seem legitimate, the fraudsters are also offering users a 'No Objection Certificate' (NOC) for the installation of the towers.

Only TSPs or IPs Install Mobile Towers in India

The public should be aware that only the telecom service providers (TSPs) or the Infrastructure Providers (IPs) install mobile towers in India. To verify if the installation is legit, the public is advised to visit the official website of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), which contains and updates all the information related to the mobile tower installations in India.

Either telcos such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, or Reliance Jio will be installing the telecom towers, or it will be done by an authorised telecom infrastructure provider. If an individual or company other than the telcos or the authorised bodies come to you for mobile tower installation, please turn down their offer and report them at the earliest. Ensure that you always verify the people that come to you for such purposes by going to the telecom department's website.

Both TAIPA and COAI have been sending out messages to aware people of the frauds that have been taking place in India. Just a few days back, COAI issued a caution notice asking the public not to click on links offering free mobile recharge packs. The link was generated and shared first by fraudsters in order to collect the personal data of the users. Users are advised not to click on such links and also not forward them to other people. You should always caution the person who sent such a link to you and delete it at the moment you receive it.

Airtel Users Consume More Data on Average Than Jio Subscribers: Report

Posted: 29 Apr 2021 04:53 AM PDT

Airtel Average Data

Bharti Airtel is recognised as a better quality network service provider when compared to Reliance Jio. Airtel aims to provide a faster and healthier data experience to its users, while Jio can't do that because of its congested networks. Thus, it is no surprise that average data consumption by an Airtel user is more than that of a Jio user. According to a brokerage firm CLSA, the average data usage by 4G subscribers of Bharti Airtel is 16.7GB per month which is 30% more than what Jio users consume.

Jio Still Ahead of Airtel in Subscriber Market and Data Traffic Share

Reliance Jio is still ahead of Bharti Airtel when it comes to the subscriber market and data traffic share. Jio holds 53% of the subscriber share and 55% of the data traffic share, which is significantly more than the other telcos.

However, CLSA's report highlights that Jio lost 11ppt data traffic share to 55% when Airtel at the same time witnessed an increase of 12ppt in data traffic share. The upwards trend for Bharti Airtel should continue as the telco's 133 million voice-only subscribers upgrade to 4G services.

CLSA predicted that India's 4G market would rise to 898 million subscribers by the end of FY23. 4G penetration in the country grew to 61%, with the total number of data subscribers reaching the mark of 770 million.

According to the brokerage firm, India's total mobile data traffic grew by 34% Year-on-Year (YoY) and reached 100mTBs. The growth in overall mobile data traffic was mainly led by 4G traffic which grew by 39% YoY.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data, the average data consumed by a 4G subscriber grew to 12.3GB, which portrays an 11% growth YoY. This is 1.7x more data than what a 3G subscriber consumed and 11x more data than what a 2G subscriber consumed.

This means that as soon as more 4G subscribers are added to the list, the overall data traffic in the country will rise even further. The average data consumed by Jio users might increase as well if the telco can utilise the spectrum purchased recently and upgrade its network capacity rapidly.

Vodafone Idea’s 4G Network Faster Than Jio, Airtel: Ookla

Vodafone Idea (Vi) provided users with the fastest 4G network in India during the January to March 2021 quarter. For the unaware, this is the third consecutive quarter for Vi to hold the title of offering the fastest 4G network in India. Ookla, a major fixed broadband and mobile testing company, said that Vi provided the fastest 4G network to the users in India during the last quarter of FY2020-21. Vi offered the fastest 4G network all across India and not just in select telecom circles.

Vi Offered Fastest 4G Network in 135 Cities of India

Vodafone Idea was ahead of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in providing the fastest 4G speeds to users across 135 cities and 16 states of the country, including Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, West Bengal, Delhi, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Sikkim, Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram and Nagaland.

In the most major cities of India, including Delhi NCR, Kolkata, and Mumbai, Vi provided the fastest 4G network to its users. The company has achieved the feat of providing the fastest 4G network to users pan-India for three consecutive quarters. Vi provided the fastest network to users in the July to September 2020, October to December 2020 quarter, and now the January to March 2021 quarter.

The release from the telco said that it has been able to increase its network capacity by refarming its 3G spectrum for 4G services throughout multiple circles of India. This has helped the telco a lot in providing better average downloading speeds to users than Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

This is a positive sign for Vi and its investors. Even the company's subscribers will stick with its services in areas where it provides good network coverage because of the high downloading speed. Further, the telco offers unlimited data between 12 AM and 6 AM with its select prepaid plans.

The unlimited data benefit and the fastest 4G network makes Vi a strong contender in the market, and its future looks less gloom in the industry. The telco is expected to further enhance its network capacity. All that Vi needs is better coverage, and its services will be unmatched by any other telecom service provider (TSP) in India.

Netflix Will Now Play a Show or Movie Randomly For You

The global streaming giant Netflix is now making it easier for users to watch content on its platform. One of the biggest pain points for the users is to select a movie/show they want to watch when there are thousands of options available. To make the steaming experience hassle-free, the company is rolling out the 'Play Something' feature for its users worldwide.

Note that the feature is compatible with the users streaming Netflix on their Smart TVs. The 'Play Something' button will select a movie or show randomly for you when you click on it. This will allow you to explore new content without needing to go through the entire library of the over-the-top (OTT) platform.

Netflix 'Play Something' Button Now Available For Everyone

Netflix began testing the feature nine months back. In an announcement, Netflix said that users across the globe would be able to use its 'Play Something' feature on their Smart TVs. Whenever a user clicks on the 'Play Something' button, a maximum of three outcomes is possible.

First, you might see a film/show that you have never seen; second, you might come across something that's already on your list, or you are watching; or third, you might get a show/film that you left halfway through earlier.

If you don't like the content that's playing, you can always skip through it by clicking on the 'Play Something Else' button. Users can do this as many times as they want. It is just like skipping through different channels to find something that you may want to watch.

Netflix will intelligently choose content depending on your watch history and the content that you have liked. There are multiple places where users can select the 'Play Something' option from. The first is right under your name in the profile selection screen. Second, you can find it on the navigation menu on the left and third on the tenth row of your Netflix homepage.

This feature will be available to every user streaming content from Netflix on their Smart TVs. It will certainly ease the experience for the user when he/she is confused about selecting the right show/movie.

Vodafone and O2 Sign Deal for 5G Spectrum Trading

Posted: 28 Apr 2021 09:30 PM PDT

vodafone-o2-5g-spectrum-trading

The renowned telecom operators of the UK, Vodafone and O2, have signed a new deal to trade airwaves for creating more efficient blocks of the 5G spectrum. Both the telcos have already deployed mass infrastructure to provide a 5G network for fast and reliable internet and telecommunications services. The new deal between Vodafone and O2 will make the 5G network more efficient in indoor and outdoor areas. Also, the network coverage will expand across urban, suburban and rural areas. The telcos also highlighted the fact that large contiguous blocks provide higher bandwidth, faster speed and lower latency.

Securing Contiguous Blocks of Spectrum is Essential for Providing Effective 5G Network

Mark Evans, CEO of O2, said that the telco is heavily investing in its network this year to improve the 5G coverage and experience for customers. Once the contiguous blocks of spectrum are secured, it will unleash the true power of the 5G network, which will help the telco in amplifying the connectivity in indoor and outdoor areas.

As reported by RCR Wireless, the deal, which is subjected to approval from local telecommunication services regulator Ofcom, will create a contiguous block of 80 megahertz for O2. As for Vodafone, it will ensure good proximity of the entire block of telco totalling 90 megahertz of spectrum.

Vodafone Will Create A Better Future for Customers

Ahmed Essam, CEO of Vodafone, said that the agreement with O2 and the result of the auction would give wings to the plan of the telco to create a better future for customers. The telco will have the best available spectrum to ensure fast and reliable 5G services to customers. Not only this, but the agreement with O2 will aid the telco in prioritising Britain for the epicentre of innovation in crucial areas like remote training, factory automation and more.

Meanwhile, Vodafone has committed to pay nearly 176.4 million pounds for 40 megahertz in the 3.6-3.8Ghz band. The telecom giant has already launched 5G in almost 100 UK markets along with additional 193 markets around Europe. On the other side, O2 recently marked that its nationwide 5G network reaches over 150 towns and cities across the UK.

The Smart Telephony of Netplus allows users to receive calls both in their mobile and fixed-line connection.

The company didn't mention it on the website, but we expect that the price of the plan is exclusive of GST.

Netplus Broadband Premium HD Plan

The 'Premium HD' plan from Netplus comes for a cost of Rs 1,499 per month. The speciality of this plan is that it offers users 345+ HD channels with the IPTV service. Further, users get a 350 Mbps fiber internet connection with the company's Smart Telephony service. This plan's price might also be exclusive of GST.

Netplus Broadband Platinum HD Plan

The 'Platinum HD' plan is the most expensive 'Triple Play' plan from Netplus Broadband, and it costs Rs 1,599 per month (might be exclusive of GST). The company offers 345+ HD channels with the IPTV service and a fiber broadband connection with 400 Mbps speed. Users also get unlimited voice calling with the Smart Telephony service from the company.

What Does Netplus IPTV Service Offer?

First of all, IPTV means Internet Protocol Television meaning the data packets carrying content are sent over internet protocol networks. Users can consume the content from a single connection on multiple screens, including their TVs, mobiles, and tablets. Users get the option to consume content from live TV HD channels.

Further, there is 'Time Shift TV' which means that users can watch the previous 2 hours of the program they missed out on watching. Also, the 'Catch UP TV' feature allows users to catch up with any program or piece of content from the last 7 days they missed out on.

Further, users can install and even sideload applications; use the company's Video-on-Demand (VoD) service for watching their favourite content.

The Netplus 'Triple Play' plans are quite something when users are considering about getting a broadband connection. They compete directly with JioFiber's offerings that come with a free Set-Top Box as well.

You Broadband recently launched new fiber internet plans for the Ahmedabad circle. With the launch of those plans, You Broadband could finally come into direct competition with other internet service providers (ISPs) such as JioFiber, Airtel Xstream Fiber, and Excitel.

For the unaware, You Broadband is a subsidiary company of Vodafone Idea (Vi) that provides fiber broadband services throughout multiple cities of India. After Ahmedabad, You Broadband will be further offering new internet plans in two cities – Kakinada and Vijaywada. Both the cities are located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. With the launch of the new offerings, the company is offering 3.5TB fair usage policy (FUP) data with its plans in both cities. Let's take a look at all that's new.

You Broadband New Fiber Plans For Vijaywada

The company will be launching four new plans for the Vijaywada circle and has already launched five new plans for the Kakinada circle. Let's start by going over the plans that will launch for Vijaywada soon.

For Vijaywada, the company will be launching four new plans. These plans will come with – 75 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 150 Mbps, and 200 Mbps speeds. Along with 1 month, all of the plans are also available with long-term validities – 90 days, 180 days, and 360 days. The company will offer 5 days of extra service with the 90 days plan, 10 days extra with the 180 days plan, and 30 days extra with the 360 days plan. Take a look at all the plans for Vijaywada in the table below.

You Broadband New Fiber Plan Details

Speed/Validity 30 Days 90 Days (+5 days bonus) 180 days (+10 days bonus) 360 days (+30 days bonus)
75 Mbps Rs 797 Rs 2,390 Rs 4,779 Rs 9,558
100 Mbps Rs 826 Rs 2,478 Rs 4,956 Rs 9,912
150 Mbps Rs 944 Rs 2,832 Rs 5,664 Rs 11,328
200 Mbps Rs 1,062 Rs 3,186 Rs 6,372 Rs 12,744

Note that all of the prices mentioned in the table above are inclusive of GST.

You Broadband New Five Plans For Kakinada

As mentioned above, the company has launched a total of five new plans for Kakinada. These plans come with 50 Mbps, 75 Mbps, 100 Mbps, 150 Mbps, and 200 Mbps speeds. The company is also offering 3.5TB FUP data to users living in Kakinada. The 75 Mbps and 150 Mbps plans offered in Kakinada are slightly cheaper than the prices of plans offered in Vijaywada. Go through all the plans mentioned in the table below.

You Broadband New Plan Details

Speed/Validity 30 Days 90 Days (+ 5 days bonus) 180 days (+10 days bonus) 360 days (+30 days bonus)
50 Mbps Rs 649 Rs 1,949 Rs 3,499 Rs 6,699
75 Mbps Rs 708 Rs 2,124 Rs 4,248 Rs 8,496
100 Mbps Rs 826 Rs 2,478 Rs 4,956 Rs 9,912
150 Mbps Rs 885 Rs 2,655 Rs 5,310 Rs 10,620
200 Mbps Rs 1,062 Rs 3,186 Rs 6,372 Rs 12,744

Note that all of the prices mentioned in the table above are inclusive of GST.

None of the plans launched come with any over-the-top (OTT) benefits. Apart from that, since the prices of the plans are mentioned after including taxes, they become a good alternative to the plans that users buy from other top operators of the country.

The plans for Kakinada are already live on the website of the company, and plans for Vijaywada will be available soon as well. We expect the company to roll out similar plans for other circles in the coming days which will make it a top alternative for other ISPs in India.
