| Broadband Expansion Plans of USA Entails $100 Billion Investment Posted: 04 Apr 2021 07:30 AM PDT
The service cost for the broadband networks in the USA has skyrocketed compared to many other wealthy nations in and around the west. The fact that it doesn’t reach the tens of millions of Americans makes it even worse. The companies that can provide services vastly do not face much competition and enjoy monopoly making the prices go even higher. A report by AP said the newly elected president of the USA, Joe Biden, has proposed a promising package of $2.3 trillion for infrastructure, $100 billion of which goes solely for better connectivity amongst Americans. Although, right now, it is being considered more of an idea than an actual policy. It highlights the remarkable vision of the government to improve high-speed internet service in the country. Measures likely to be taken$100 Billion is set aside to “future proof” broadband as a part of an 8-year infrastructure plan, considering high-speed internet is now as big of a necessity as electricity. A major step is likely to be taken towards lowering internet services’ hectic costs rather than just leaving the matter to the network providers. It is not a fact yet; nonetheless, it will be interesting to see government intervention in an area that was previously left privatised. What is the need? The pandemic has made access to the broadband internet a necessity in any household. The new normal is to sit in your home and work with your computer through the internet. But, according to the White House, 30 Million Americans don’t have access to high-speed broadband internet at all, and millions can’t afford it. Therefore making the Internet accessible to everyone is now a necessity more than a want. CriticsWhile the USA government’s vision is being praised a lot, some have still managed to find some flaws in it. Republicans and commerce committee members are concerned and have called out the approach as a wrong one since the taxpayers will have to pay for it if such networks fail. According to them, broadband services are already falling. According to the labour department, the pricing for telephone services have fallen by 7% over the last decade, and internet service costs such as web hosting have risen by 2%. But it is also true that the prices are still higher in the USA when compared with Asia and Europe. Only time will tell if the policy would turn out to be a hit or a miss. |
| BSNL Bharat Fibre Discontinues Multiple Broadband Plans Posted: 04 Apr 2021 05:44 AM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has its own arm of fiber internet services called 'Bharat Fibre'. The broadband internet service provider (ISP) has discontinued several fiber plans starting today. BSNL started by offering four fiber plans on October 1, 2020. The four plans that launched initially were – Fibre Basic, Fibre Value, Fibre Premium, and Fibre Ultra. During the period, multiple new plans were added and several were removed from the offerings. Starting today, BSNL Bharat Fibre users can only choose between two broadband plans – Fibre Basic Plus and Fibre Premium Plus. The Fibre Basic Plus plan costs Rs 599 per month (exclusive of taxes) and the Fibre Premium Plus plan costs Rs 1,277 per month (exclusive of taxes). Let's take a detailed look at the plans on offer. BSNL Fibre Basic Plus Broadband PlanThe BSNL Fibre Basic Plus broadband plan costs Rs 599 per month (exclusive of taxes). Users get up to 60 Mbps downloading/uploading speeds and 3.3TB or 3,300GB data with this plan. After consuming the fair usage policy (FUP) data, users can continue browsing at 2 Mbps speeds. This plan further provides users with unlimited voice calling. BSNL Fibre Premium Plus Broadband PlanThe BSNL Fibre Premium Plus broadband plan costs Rs 1,277 per month (exclusive of taxes). Users get up to 200 Mbps downloading/uploading speeds and 3.3TB or 3,300GB data with this plan. Post consuming the FUP data, the speed for the user drops to 15 Mbps. These are the two plans that are currently on offer for BSNL Bharat Fibre broadband users. One of the removed plans, the 'Fibre basic' used to cost only Rs 449 per month. It made an excellent case for an entry-level fiber broadband plan and offered users 30 Mbps downloading/uploading speeds with 3.3TB or 3,300GB data. The plans were initially slated to be discontinued on December 29, however, BSNL extended their availability to April 4, 2021, due to good demand. Many expected the BSNL Bharat Fibre plans to be regularised instead of discontinued today as they were in direct competition with the entry-level plans offered by Airtel Xstream Fiber and JioFiber. However, for some reason, BSNL has decided to scrap the plans and now will only offer two plans for the time being. The telco has not confirmed when or whether any new plans will be added to the offerings. But going with growing fiber broadband connectivity demand in India, we expect that BSNL will again come up with some amazing fiber broadband plans very soon. |
| TRAI Aiming to Enhance Prepaid and Postpaid Plans for Customers: Report Posted: 04 Apr 2021 03:30 AM PDT
There are a ton of prepaid and postpaid plans on offer from the telecom service providers (TSPs) in India. Multiple plans from either of the telcos fall in the same or nearby price range and offer similar benefits. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) might soon conduct a survey seeking the answers for a perfect tariff plan. What would be a perfect tariff plan anyway? One that fulfils the need of the users in the desired price range, sure. According to a PTI report, the regulatory body might rope in an outside agency to conduct the survey. The survey would focus on estimating if the tariff plans offered by the TSPs are suitable to meet the needs of a variety of users. This will let the TSPs know what their customers actually want from them. TRAI’s aim is to find out if the plans offered by the operators are 'customer-oriented'. TRAI Wants to Ensure Fulfilment of Customer's NeedsThere are different people with different requirements from their plans. Some only need data, some only need voice calling, and some need both along with SMS with over-the-top (OTT) benefits. The idea behind TRAI’s survey would be to ensure that every set and category of customer has got a plan ideal for their needs. The regulator doesn't want people to be forced towards getting a single kind of plan. There are a lot of plans in the market that are similar to each other. But those plans at the same price point might not be what everyone needs. The planning for how the survey would be taken is currently in process. Once finalised, TRAI will select an outside agency for completing the survey and finding results. The regulator is taking this step to ensure that the industry keeps on working smoothly and the customers’ interests are not ignored. At present, the operators can set the rates of their plans without any interference from the regulator. |
| Vodafone Idea Provides Industry Unique Offers, Yet Behind Jio and Airtel Posted: 04 Apr 2021 12:30 AM PDT
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been losing out on subscribers every month since October 2019. In March, Vi investors found temporary relief when the Trai report said the company added 1.7 million customers in January 2021. But Vi clarified that it had made 'inadvertent errors' while submitting the numbers to the regulator. From the correct numbers, it was found that instead of adding subscribers, Vi lost 2.3 million of them. What's interesting here is that Vi is offering the most unique prepaid offers in the industry. The telco has launched offers that make its prepaid plans literally 'Gold' in terms of benefits. Offers such as 'Binge all Night' and 'Weekend Data Rollover' on top of bonus data with most of its prepaid plans make the telco's offerings very attractive. Despite all this, it is still behind Jio and Airtel, but why? Vi Behind Jio and Airtel, But WhyBharti Airtel and Reliance Jio are the two top operators of India. In third place stands Vodafone Idea. Vi has a strong spectrum portfolio, so strong that it didn't really need to purchase a lot of airwaves in the recently held auctions. The telco is even upgrading its 4G capacity by refarming the 3G spectrum in a phased manner across India. It means that Vi users will get an even better 4G internet and calling experience regardless of their location. It provides prepaid offers that neither Jio nor Airtel does, yet it is behind both the telcos. Overall, the telco has good plans, a good network, and an established brand, yet it has been continuously losing subscribers only. Why is it Happening? The first and the most obvious reason is slightly cheaper offerings from Jio and Airtel. We are not saying Vi's prepaid offers are not 'just' or 'fair' for their price. While they are just fine, no one can deny that they are still a 'little' expensive than Jio's and Airtel's offerings. The telco's network reach is good, but it is not as good as Jio's. Jio is targeting rural India, where not just Vi but Airtel lags as well. Let's address the elephant in the room. While the above-mentioned reasons are 'contributing factors' to Vi losing out on subscribers, no one really likes to talk about the prime reason why Vi is falling behind the other private operators. It is Vi's reducing brand image. Vi's Falling Brand ImageVodafone and Idea merged to form 'Vodafone Idea Limited', now 'Vi'. Subconsciously, that sets a negative image for the company in the minds of the users. It becomes very easy to think that Vodafone and Idea had to merge because they just weren't good enough. After the merger, things didn't rapidly change for the telco. Even though it saw a positive curve in its subscriber addition for a brief period, it has been struggling financially for way too long. That's what motivated Vi to come out with industry-unique offers. It wanted to gain a larger market share to increase its revenues. But even that might have worked against the company. Indians could see the desperate nature of Vi to survive from the offers it rolled out. But here's the good thing for Vi. India is a massive market, and a huge part of it is still in the 2G era. But they will soon look to upgrade to 4G. All that Vi has to do is figure out a way to attract this set of subscribers. Even though users appreciate the unique offers from Vi, a lot of them don't really need that. Users are content with the kind of benefits they get from Airtel and Jio for a lesser price. |
| Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL and Jio Will All Target Homegrown 5G Posted: 03 Apr 2021 06:32 PM PDT
The last few years have changed the trend of the telecom market completely. If you notice, several countries, including India, are shifting towards homegrown technology because of security concerns. India's only four operators, Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi), Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), and Reliance Jio, are also expected to integrate more homegrown technology into their upcoming 5G networks. Jio and Airtel are pretty vocal about the same. Jio has said that it will only look for homegrown 5G solutions. The telco purchased a ton of network equipment from Samsung for the 4G rollout. But now, it will not rely on the South Korean tech giant for its 5G rollout. Airtel is also developing in-house 5G. Both Jio and Airtel will be aiming to not only roll out the 5G network in India but will also share their proprietary solutions with other nations to help them roll out 5G as well. Era of Chinese Vendors Dying SlowlyThe most affected vendors across the globe are from China. Chinese vendors, including ZTE and Huawei, are losing out on contracts worldwide because of their alleged connections with the Chinese government. Both India and the USA have been at the forefront, looking to remove Chinese vendors from their ecosystem of networks. India has even declared that if ZTE and Huawei don't make it to the 'trusted vendors' list, they will not have any future in the country. Earlier, over 80% of the telecom market worldwide was controlled by companies such as ZTE, NEC, Samsung, Cisco, Nokia, Huawei, and Ericsson. But with the emergence of new players providing specific solutions, things have changed. New players such as Parallel Wireless, Altiostar, Mavenir own the market for providing better software solutions. Then companies such as Google, IBM, and Amazon are known for offering world-class cloud and network technology solutions. Further, Indian companies such as Tech Mahindra and Reliance Jio are really good at integrating software and hardware. The rise of new players and more options in the market has taken power away from companies such as Ericsson, Nokia, ZTE, Huawei, and more. Further, it is in the benefit of the operators if there are more local vendors present within their country. It will help them in keeping their networks far from national security threats. As for BSNL, the government is already forcing the telco to go with local vendors for its 4G rollout. Even though BSNL's hybrid 4G plan includes foreign vendors, the telco still has to go with local vendors for more than 50,000 of its sites. Vodafone Idea's 5G MysteryVi has confirmed that its network is 5G ready, but apart from that, it has been more on the quiet side when it comes to 5G. While the other two private operators of the country have been very vocal about their tests and homegrown solutions, Vi has been battling to stay afloat in the market. The telco has been losing customers on a regular despite launching several amazing industry-unique offers. We expect that Vi won't be looking to invest in 5G networks anytime soon. The telco's future in India looks grim if it continues to lose out on subscribers for the next few quarters. We expect Vi to go with homegrown 5G solutions as well whenever it decides to enter the 5G arena. But that will depend on whether it is costlier or cheaper. Vi would be very wary of investing a lot of money into 5G. In hindsight, if Vi survives till pan-India 5G rollout, it might be able to leverage the high demand of IoT devices connectivity with 5G. While Jio and Airtel are leading, Vi can still get a sizeable amount of market with its 5G services since the demand for data and connectivity is only going to rise from here. |
| Google might Launch their first-ever chip named “Whitechapel”: Details Posted: 03 Apr 2021 08:30 AM PDT
Google Pixel 6 is expected to debut sometime in October this year. Last year, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the company would be making significant investments in its hardware during the Q3 2020 earnings call. He further said that the company had planned a great roadmap up till 2021. Many started suspecting that the company might be working on its processor called “Whitechapel” from that point on. A report via 9to5Google revealed that smartphones coming by fall would be the company’s first phones that will be powered by their “GS101” Whitechapel chipset. Hence, it might be true that Google is now going to discard Qualcomm’s Snapdragon SoC. Some of the rumours also allege that Google might also be collaborating with Samsung to build its Whitechapel chips. The chips are allegedly being built in the South Korean tech giant’s system large scale integration (SLSI) division. Whitechapel featuresThe “GS” in “GS101” Whitechapel chipsets stands for “Google Silicon”. Reference for the “Slider” codename ascertained in the Google Camera app is supposed to be a shared platform for Whitechapel SoC. Since the chips rumoured to be built in Samsung’s SLSI division, it is being suspected that it may have common features with Samsung Exynos. The Google phones that are yet to come by October go by codenames “Raven” and “Oriole” and will be part of the Pixel 6 series. According to a report by XDA developers, Whitechapel chipsets are said to be equivalent to the Snapdragon 7-series chipsets. The 5nm octa-core arm chip might include two Cortex-A78 CPU core, two Cortex-A76 cores, and four Cortex-A55 cores besides an off-the-shelf ARM Mali GPU. Google will enjoy a greater level of control over its driver updates as it will not have to rely upon Qualcomm for it. The upcoming Pixel handsets with the “GS101” chips are supposed to get 5 generations of OS updates which is a bonus because, as of now, the Pixel devices get 3 years of Android OS updates. |
| Safaricom Begins Trials to Launch 5G in East Africa Posted: 03 Apr 2021 07:25 AM PDT
Safaricom is known as Kenya’s biggest telco. It has recently announced that it will begin trials for the 5G internet and the technology used will be acquired from Huawei and Nokia. According to a report by 5gradar, it was announced on Friday that four cities were given priority for the trials namely Nairobi, Kisumu, Kissi and Kakamega. The trials however will eventually be expanded to 150 sites, including in 9 urban areas in an estimated period of about 12 months. For more details on the 5G roll out keep on reading. Plan to execute the 5G networkIt will only be a matter of time till the company establishes if the customers will be able to enjoy speeds up to 700 Mbps with plans to offer up to 1000 Mbps speeds in the next few months, which is also the primary objective of the trials. 700 Mbps is more than three times faster than the current 4G network. 5G network also has better connectivity compared to the current 4G network, meaning far more devices can now be connected to the internet in a particular area using the 5G network. Safaricom’s customers on the trial will be provided with a 5G router to use. The 5G services will also be actively working on some 5G phones namely Huawei Mate 30 Pro and P40 for now and by the end of April 2021 on the Nokia 8.3, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G. The 5G phones will be available for purchase at Safaricom Shops. Since the 5G technology is an upgraded version of the Home Fiber and Fiber for Business Services, it will be an opportunity for the telco to expand its network and target customers in places where the fibre network was yet to be rolled out. PartnersSafaricom has chosen Nokia and Huawei as their technology partners. The abovementioned two companies will be responsible to implement the 5G network rollout. Huawei is however considered a security threat, accused of having internal relations with the Chinese government and it is said that the Chinese government can manipulate the telco to espionage on other countries. The US has urged other countries to exclude Huawei from their 5G network rollout due to security concerns. Huawei however, has denied all accusations and managed to get business in East Africa. |
| DoT Gave Reliance Jio New MSC Code, Details Posted: 03 Apr 2021 05:44 AM PDT
Reliance Jio is the largest telecom operator in India. The telco entered the Indian telecom industry back in 2016 and right after its launch disrupted the entire market. The company has increased the competition by offering internet services at affordable prices and also become the reason for packing bags for some of the competitors. In the latest development, the telco has received a fresh ACCESS-MSC code from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). Do note that the new MSC code is allocated for the Tamil Nadu circle. Let’s have a closer look at the new ACCESS-MSC code. The MSC code is provided by DoT to the telecom operator once they face a shortage in providing connections. MSC code allows service providers to provide new mobile numbers to new users. The new MSC code provided to Reliance Jio will allow the telco to meet the demands of one million more subscribers in the region. Just in case if you’re wondering what is MSC code, then let us tell you that the MSC code is nothing but the first five digits of your mobile number. Reliance Jio Received New ACCESS-MSC CodeAccording to the document shared by Dot, Reliance Jio has been allotted 93420-93429 ACCESS-MSC code for the Tamil Nadu circle. DoT has mentioned that the new MSC code will be used by Jio alone and it can't use the numbering series for the active subscriber of Rcom, RTL, and other port out subscribers. It seems that the demand for fresh MSC code is high from Reliance Jio because recently the telco has received an MSC code for Madhya Pradesh (MP) circle and Gujarat circle. Back in March, the telco received 93290-93299 ACCESS-MSC code for MP circle and before that, it had received fresh ACCESS-MSC codes – 78610, 78628-78630, 78618-78620, 78638, 78598-78599 for Gujarat circles. With the additional numbering resources, Jio will be able to add more subscribers in the Tamil Nadu circle. |
| 5G mmWave is 30x More Faster than Public Wi-Fi: Opensignal Posted: 03 Apr 2021 03:30 AM PDT
Yes, it is not surprising that mmWave 5G is better than public Wi-Fi because we know that even 4G can beat public Wi-Fi. But here is where things get interesting when it comes to mmWave 5G and public Wi-Fi spots. Both require the same kind of availability to provide a good connection to the users. For operators to provide seamless mmWave 5G services, they will have to cover a whole area of the city with mmWave antennas. This is because mmWave 5G users very high frequencies and provide a small coverage just like Wi-Fi. According to a report from Opensignal, most of the users across the US aren't experiencing true 5G with mmWave. Instead, they are getting 5G services on frequency bands under 6 GHz. With 5G on bands under 6 GHz, Opensignal users saw download speeds of 63.9 Mbps which is 3x faster than public Wi-Fi. However, with mmWave 5G, the download speed was 30x faster compared to the public Wi-Fi.
Opensignal's analysis team head, Ian Fogg, has cited three reasons for the speed difference between mmWave 5G and public Wi-Fi despite being very similar in availability. Why mmWave 5G is Faster than Public Wi-FiFogg's first reason behind this observation is 'interference from other signals'. Public Wi-Fi uses unlicensed spectrum that can be accessed by anyone. In such areas, multiple Wi-Fi networks are competing in the same frequencies creating interference issues. Since residential areas have very few buildings, the competition between Wi-Fi networks is much lesser, hence the higher internet speed. On the other hand, 5G and 4G networks use dedicated frequencies that are licensed to the operator delivering a better experience to the users. The second reason cited by Fogg is 'older technology foundations'. Public Wi-Fi networks are powered by wired broadband. If that broadband technology was installed several years ago and has not been updated yet, it won't be able to handle a high capacity of users. In comparison, the operators keep upgrading the backhaul connection to every cellular base, which in turn ensures that wired connectivity never interferes with their users’ internet experience. Lastly, the third reason cited by Fogg is 'not enough Wi-Fi access points of high quality'. High-quality Wi-Fi access points ensure that a good signal is delivered everywhere. If not, the overall experience for the user would degrade. The acceptable or good quality Wi-Fi standards today are Wi-Fi 5 and Wi-Fi 6. Modern routers usually come with the latest Wi-Fi standard installed on them. |
| Jio Can Boost Subscriber Addition With Low-Cost Smartphones Posted: 03 Apr 2021 01:08 AM PDT
Jio is planning to launch new low-cost smartphones in India, which might help the telco regain subscriber momentum. According to JM Financial’s note, the recent delay in tariff hike is not going to affect the long-term structural uptrend story in Jio’s average revenue per user (ARPU). As per a PTI report, Jio's aggressive strategy for affordable smartphones is going to boost its subscriber base in the country. Jio Affordable Smartphone Launch Might Boost Subscriber MomentumFurther, the report claims that the subscriber count for the telco remained muted for FY21 owing to spectrum scarcity that occurred due to a surge in users data consumption post COVID scenario. The new aggressive JioPhone offers coupled with the impending launch of low-cost smartphones will help the telecom operator to regain subscriber count in the country. Jio's net subscriber addition dropped to 2.3 million per month compared to 4.7 million net subscribers in March 2020. It has been reported that the JioPhone plans will be able to create some traction and act as a key to revive the subscriber momentum for Jio. JM Financial report suggests that Jio will significantly focus on increasing the subscriber count. The company is mainly planning to cross-sell and up-sell digital opportunities to its subscriber. It would be interesting to see what are the offers Jio is planning to launch with the affordable smartphone. Going with the previous reports, Jio is planning to launch the affordable smartphone at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) this year. The teleco is also expected to launch JioBook which is a low-cost laptop for Indian users. The company is expected to equip the laptop with Qualcomm chipsets. The delay in tariff hikes will further help the company in attracting a larger market base when other telcos like Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have already increased the price of their plans. |
| BSNL Faces Accusations from TEPC Yet Again: Report Posted: 02 Apr 2021 11:10 PM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's (BSNL) journey has been one of a roller coaster ride in the last few years. The state-run telco is restricted by other government bodies whenever it tries to do something new or expand its business. The Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) and the Telecom Equipment Manufacturers Association of India (TEMA) have called out BSNL's Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands (KLI) project tender to be focused only on the 'foreign' vendors. According to a PTI report, local telecom vendors have complained that the KLI project tender from BSNL does not offer them any business scope. TEPC and TEMA have complained about the same to the telecom secretary Anshu Prakash. For the unaware, the KLI project from BSNL is worth Rs 1,072 crores. Take a look at the tender norms set by BSNL for the concerned project. BSNL KLI Project Tender NormsBSNL has asked for the inclusion of 'repeater cables' in the tender. Note that there are only a few foreign vendors that can avail this technology to the telco. Further, BSNL has included a clause requiring a minimum turnover of Rs 1,400 crores. Further, the clause states that the vendors should have a minimum experience of deploying repeater cable up to 1,000 km in distance with a depth of 3 km. TEPC has argued that these clauses completely rule out any scope for Indian vendors to be able to participate in the tender. The official statement from TEPC states that 'repeatered technology' is old, and only select companies can support it. The interesting thing here is that it is not just the Indian companies raising objections, but also the foreign companies. According to a statement from the TEMA chairman, 22 vendors, including Indian and foreign companies, have raised concerns against the eligibility criteria set by BSNL. The companies have said that the criteria is not in line with the CVC guidelines. TEPC said if Indian companies can't bid due to eligibility criteria, the 'vocal for local' mission won't be successful. |
