| OnePlus Pay India Launch Imminent: Big Competition for Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm Posted: 05 Apr 2021 09:30 AM PDT
It seems that OnePlus is gearing up to launch its payment platform dubbed as OnePlus Pay soon in India. We have witnessed several leaks and rumours about the payment platform. In the latest development, the company has trademarked the name in the country. Popular tipster Mukul Sharma has spotted the listing, but the certification didn't reveal anything about the launch date of the OnePlus Pay. According to the 91Mobile report, the company is expected to release the new feature with the rollout of OxygenOS. Here's a closer look at the trademark filing of OnePlus Pay. OnePlus Pay Received Trademark in IndiaAccording to the report, OnePlus Pay is planning to compete against Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and other digital payment platforms. The service is already available in the home country China via the Wallet app. In the last couple of years, OnePlus has expanded its footprint in India and entered almost all the categories, including a smartwatch, fitness band, TWS, and more. The company has also entered the television market a couple of years back in the country. Going with the reports, the company is expected to bring the service later this month. OnePlus has also revealed that it will soon add the Always-On-Display feature to the OnePlus Watch via an update. Just to recall, the smartwatch comes with features like an AMOLED display, battery with days power backup, water and dust resistance certification, and more.
OnePlus Pay Might Face Difficult in IndiaComing back to the OnePlus Pay, we are yet to know more about the digital payment service. More information about the service will be uncovered in the coming days. It would be interesting to see how OnePlus Pay is going to compete with already established digital payment platforms like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and more, as platforms like Amazon Pay and Mi Pay are still struggling in the country. WhatsApp, with over 400 million users in India, wasn’t able to do good in the payments side of things. People are used to these old players like Google Pay, PhonePe and Paytm. |
| Mobile Charging on Trains Not Allowed Between 11 PM to 5 AM: Indian Railways Posted: 05 Apr 2021 08:00 AM PDT
Indian Railways board seems to have become strict for the passengers as it has issued new orders keeping in mind the increased number of fire incidents on trains. The Railway Board has announced that it will not allow passengers to use charging sockets between 11 PM to 5 AM. This will restrict users to charge their phones, laptops, battery banks, and other electronic devices. So if you're planning to travel via train, then make sure you have enough charge on your electronic device. You can also carry a good amount of power banks with you. No Mobile Charging on Train for Five HoursAccording to a Mobile91 report, the senior Railway official of Western Railway suggested that the new rules are already in place from March 16th 2021. Notably, the new rules are for all the railway zones in India. These rules are implemented to avoid fire-related accidents on Indian trains. Moreover, the restriction on overnight charging is not a new rule; it's just a reiteration of the older one. Do note that the power of all the charging points will be shut down from the main switchboard of the train at 11 PM, and it will resume at 5 AM. Recently, some minor cases of fire incidents were reported due to overcharging of electronic devices; these rules are meant to avoid such incidents. Recently a coach of Shatabdi Express travelling to Dehradun caught fire due to a short circuit because of overcharging of a device. Around six days later, a goods train engine faced a fire incident due to similar reasons. It seems that the Indian Railways has also started taking strict actions against smoking and carrying inflammable items inside the trains. It seems that in some cases, the items played a very big role in causing a fire. Passengers and employees both will be made aware of the new rules. If passengers or employees are caught violating the fire norms or carrying any restricted items, then they have to pay the fine. In some cases, the violator can even get imprisonment of three years. So next time if you board a train, make sure you don't have any restricted item; otherwise, you can find yourself behind bars. |
| Verizon Discontinuing 3G Network, to Offer 5G at a Huge Cost to Customers Posted: 05 Apr 2021 07:00 AM PDT
Verizon, an American telecom operator, is finally killing its 3G network. The company has confirmed the last date for its 3G network to be the last day of 2022. Verizon isn't stopping its 3G network right away because several people in the US are still using 3G devices, and the transition to devices that support 4G LTE or 5G will take some time. According to a report from Input, Verizon was supposed to shut down the 3G network in early 2021 itself. But due to delays in January, the company has finally decided to official kill its 3G on the last day of 2022. There was a time when 3G was referred to as the revolutionary technology to help people connect. A true 3G network can allow users to get downloading speeds of up to 5 to 12 Mbps. However, with 5G on the way, the company would be able to better utilise all the 3G spectrum for either 4G or 5G. Verizon's 5G is already available in the US; however, users across the country are still yet to experience the true potential of 5G. Verizon's Costly 5G for CustomersLast month, Verizon purchased C-band spectrum to increase its capacity for providing 5G services. The company had to spend around $45.5 billion for making that purchase. To recover the cost, Verizon will offer customers 'premium unlimited' 5G plans, namely – Do More, Play More, and Get More. However, each of these plans will be priced very high. The mmWave 5G that Verizon provides isn't in enough places of the country that users can rely on it. But with the additional C-band spectrum that will come live soon, users will be able to experience the true potential of 5G on their smartphones. At present, the company provides its 5G network and services with a very limited spectrum on its bag. Only time will tell if US citizens are ready to pay a 'premium' on their plans for using faster 5G when they can do most of the things they want to do with a 4G plan. |

| Vodafone Idea Looking to Rollout 5G Leveraging Dynamic Spectrum Sharing: Report Posted: 05 Apr 2021 05:00 AM PDT
In comparison with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been a little quiet when it comes to talking about 5G rollout plans. However, the telco has said that its network is already 5G ready, and when the right time comes, it will roll out the next-generation connectivity technology. Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vi, Jagbir Singh, said Vi has a strong portfolio of the spectrum, but the government needs to lower the reserve price of mid-bands for ensuring a smoother 5G rollout. According to an ET Telecom report, Singh believes that Vi has enough spectrum in the 1800-2100 MHz bands, but the telco will require airwaves across more bands to deliver the true potential of 5G networks. However, he is confident that having enough spectrum in the 1800-2100 MHz bands would allow the telco in providing good coverage to the users. He said that initially, the telco would look to leverage the dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology to provide 5G services. Note that Airtel also tested its 5G network in Hyderabad using DSS technology in the 1800 MHz band. Further, Singh said that Vi could go with carrier aggregation (CA) between the TDD and FDD technologies for deploying 5G, ensuring spectrum's benefits are reaped by the telco, and users get a better experience with the company's network. Affordable Spectrum a Necessity for Company Like ViVi has been under financial stress for several quarters. Singh said that government needs to provide the spectrum at reasonable rates, especially for a company such as Vi. For rolling out 5G, Vi will require more spectrum, but if that spectrum isn't available at a cheaper rate than now, the company might not be able to participate in the auctions in its proper capacity. Singh further said that the telecom industry and other sectors of the economy would have to partner up for developing and finding new use-cases for 5G. |

| Bharti Airtel EBITDA Will Grow by Rs 1 Billion in Q4 FY21: ICICI Securities Posted: 05 Apr 2021 03:00 AM PDT
Bharti Airtel has been adding more subscribers than any other telco in India for the last few months. In a report, ICICI securities has highlighted that the telco will continue adding subscribers and gain more market share in the Q4 FY21. The key highlight of the report was the Rs 1 billion benefit that Airtel is likely to receive post the scrapping of Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) on January 1, 2021. Earlier, every call to any user subscribed to services of any other operator attracted an IUC of 6 paise per minute. Airtel never took IUC from its customers which meant more costs for the company. But after the removal of IUC, Airtel's cost should come down and its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) is expected to grow by Rs 1 billion. Vodafone Idea (Vi) on the other hand is expected to lose out on Rs 0.8 million in IUC this quarter since the telco used to receive IUC instead of paying it. ARPU of Airtel and Vi Expected to IncreaseThe average revenue per user (ARPU) for Airtel and Vi is expected to grow QoQ on the back of a good subscriber addition rate. Vi lost subscribers but the trend of decreasing subscribers was found to be on a negative slope. This means that the telco lost fewer subscribers than it used to. Airtel added around 8 million subscribers this quarter while Vi lost 1.5 million of them. ICICI Securities has estimated a net profit of Rs 2.9 billion for Airtel during the quarter. At the same time, Vi's EBITDA is expected to decrease by 2.4% QoQ to Rs 42 billion. Vi is expected to incur a net loss of Rs 63 billion during Q4 FY21. The only positive from Vi this quarter would be lesser subscriber loss than the company saw in previous quarters. For Airtel, it was a booming quarter as the telco added millions of new subscribers and is expected to end up with net profits in the books. |

| Huawei and ZTE Stand to Lose Business Globally in the Near Future Posted: 05 Apr 2021 01:00 AM PDT
Huawei and ZTE are amongst the major telecom gear manufacturers and suppliers globally. Both the companies have played a pivotal role in helping operators across the world launch mobile networks. Be it 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G, both Huawei and ZTE have been involved in the telecom market for a long time. However, the recent developments and negative branding of the companies might leave them financially paralysed in the coming few years. For starters, countries such as the US and India, which have major telecom markets, are slowly phasing out Chinese vendors from their network ecosystem. Governments are worried about national security because of the alleged ties of Huawei and ZTE with the Chinese government. The allegations haven't been proved yet, and both the companies at every point have denied any such connection. Regardless, once the perception is made, the market reacts. That is what is happening with Huawei and ZTE. The Indian government has already said that telcos can't purchase gear or equipment from any vendor that is not in the 'trusted list' determined by the National Cybersecurity Coordinator (NCSC). Lowering Reputation of Huawei and ZTEThe premier telco of India, Bharti Airtel, has had some good and long-standing partnerships with Huawei. Sunil Bharti Mittal has been found backing Chinese vendors on multiple occasions, saying they have proven technology at a cheaper cost. But while the cost might be lesser for the telco, it might become too expensive for the government when it has to face network security threats from China. Because of the lowering reputation, both Huawei and ZTE stand to lose major business across the globe in the near term. It is not like their business is dead; both the companies have been getting contracts globally, but the trust in them has gone down. Huawei believes that it still has a fair shot in India. The company said that when the moment arrives, the Indian government will take a calibrated approach on the matter. At the same time, the Indian government has not said anything in support of the Chinese firms. The companies need to push hard into building a better reputation quickly before new players emerge and eat away their market share. There is still plenty of business that needs to be done in developing nations, and both ZTE and Huawei and equipped with resources to facilitate the needs of such countries. But it won't happen if the reputation of the companies keep going down. Huawei and ZTE are still working in India but on their older contracts. Indirectly, the government has asked telcos not to award any contract to the Chinese vendors. |

| LG Kills Smartphone Business After Incurring $4.5 Billion Loss Globally Posted: 04 Apr 2021 11:31 PM PDT
LG has officially confirmed the shutdown of its smartphone business starting today. Last week a new smartphone listing on Bluetooth SIG certification suggested that the company might not exit the business, but now all the confusions are cleared by the South Korean tech giant. Yes! You read it correctly; we are not going to see new LG smartphones ever. According to the company, it will now highly focus on growth in other areas like electric vehicle components, connected devices, smart home appliances, robotics, AI, and B2B solutions. LG Finally Confirmed the Big NewsThe company also confirmed that the existing smartphones in the market would not be retained, and you can still grab the last few models from the brand. Notably, the company continues to support its products, but it will be for a limited period depending on the region. The company is expected to make the complete business closure by the end of July 2021. The news about LG mobile business shutdown was rumoured for several months. It has been reported that the company has taken this decision due to losses. According to the report, LG was facing huge losses for nearly the last six years. As per the Verge report, the company has incurred a loss of $4.5 billion, which is approximately 33,010 crore in INR. The company recently launched its high-end dual-display smartphone and struggled to compete with a brand like Samsung, which already has a stronger hold in South Korea and globally as well. LG’s confirmation also puts a full stop to its long-teased rollable smartphone, which was expected to launch this year. The LG rollable smartphone will never see the light of launch as the company has shut down its mobile phone business. The company showcased the device back in CES 2021. Unfortunately, the smartphone will remain a prototype and never make its way to the global market. Back in March, it was reported that the company is trying hard to find a buyer for its smartphone business. But it seems that LG was unable to find a potential buyer, which leads to the shutdown of the business. |
| How to Activate DND on Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea Posted: 04 Apr 2021 10:00 PM PDT
Telecom service providers recently asked TRAI to keep the telemarketer regulations in place. Unregistered firms must pay a charge to deliver spam message to the consumers under this regulation. | SD-WAN Helps Businesses Communicate Better, What You Should Know Posted: 04 Apr 2021 08:00 PM PDT
Software-Defined Wide Area Network (SD-WAN) is known for simplifying the operation of WAN by decoupling the networking hardware from its control mechanism. In simple words, the SD-WAN uses software to more intelligently steer traffic across the WAN based on business requirements for an application. Therefore, SD-WAN is application-aware. With the right features, SD-WAN enables the use of broadband internet as a secure form of WAN transport. SD-WAN is becoming popular amongst many organisations that operate in various locations. However, just like anything, it comes with a set of pros and cons. To know more about its advantages and disadvantages keep on reading. AdvantagesSD-WAN is best-known for boosting application performance. Further, with SD-WAN, Disaster recovery is easier to achieve, especially across cloud-based applications. Security is one of the widely discussed advantages of the SD-WAN. Cost can also be heavily cut down using SD-WAN tech. The IT teams can assign expensive connectivity links like MPLS to specific complex business applications and use cheaper broadband links for less important tasks. Businesses are also able to self manage the WAN when it is software-defined and hence have better control over it. It also increases network visibility and management, providing control from one central location. SD-WAN also mitigates congestion with the failover capabilities; it automatically reroutes network traffic to a different link. DisadvantagesMany of the disadvantages come from the complexity of SD-WAN. A company needs to spend a significant amount of money towards training its IT professionals when incorporating the technology. Also, IT professionals have to be heavily deployed to maintain their technical solution, and if they cannot make it happen, there might be a need for outside help, which can be expensive. SD-WAN’s configuration doesn’t always go smoothly, opening the door for glitches, software bugs etc., which need a quick fix. In many cases, the SD-WAN vendors tend to vary and often don’t meet the original vision for software-based networking. Meaning it still has a long way to go. However, it has more advantages making it a disrupting technology, but users must be careful before employing it. |
| Excitel 200 Mbps Broadband Plan One of the Cheapest in India Posted: 04 Apr 2021 06:32 PM PDT
Excitel has very rapidly become a major fiber broadband internet service provider (ISP) of India. The company started providing services at select locations initially and now has expanded across multiple cities of India. What sets Excitel truly apart from other broadband service providers is its cheap plans. Excitel offers some of the cheapest internet plans in the broadband market of India. For example, one could get the 300 Mbps plan from Excitel for a mere cost of Rs 499 per month if they bought the plan for 12 months. Likewise, Excitel's 200 Mbps plan costs Rs 449 per month only. Sounds unbelievable, right? Well, it is true. However, to get it for such a cheap price, you will have to purchase the plan for 12 months. Excitel 200 Mbps Broadband Plan, One of the Cheapest in IndustryExcitel offers its 200 Mbps plan for a monthly cost of Rs 799 if the user is only purchasing it for one month. Airtel Xstream Fiber's 200 Mbps plan costs Rs 849 per month when purchased for 12 months. The annual, as well as monthly 200 Mbps plan from Excitel is very cheap when compared with the top ISPs in India. However, there's one thing, Excitel doesn't offer any over-the-top (OTT) benefits. But yes, the ISP offers truly unlimited data with its plans. The website of the company mentions that users get high-speed data without any monthly FUP limit. Another cost that new users of Excitel will have to incur is of Rs 2,000 as a refundable security deposit against the ONU devices provided. However, users will be exempt from any installation charges. |
