| Jio Might Go Against Market Expectations and Introduce Tariff Hikes: Report Posted: 08 Apr 2021 05:21 AM PDT
India's number one telco, Reliance Jio, might soon introduce tariff hikes. This would be a surprise for the market since many expect the telco to keep its tariffs the same in the near term and target a higher market share. Jio hasn't been adding as many subscribers as it did in its initial years of operations. The telco added around 100 million subscribers every year for the first four years. But after that, in 9MFY21, the telco only added 21 million subscribers. According to an ICICI Securities report, Jio is expected to keep adding subscribers at the same rate in the next two years as well. The report suggests that Jio will add around 20 million subscribers in FY22E and 15 million subscribers in FY23E. There are multiple reasons behind the slowdown in the growth rate of Reliance Jio's subscriber base. Less availability of the JioPhone and adverse reputation for the company because of the farmer's protests are just a few of the reasons. One of the major reasons behind the slowdown in growth rate could be reaching the market saturation point. Jio is trying to penetrate the deeper 4G market in India, and that is why the results will come slowly for the telco. Jio might change its fortunes a little faster and add more subscribers than predicted because of the faster availability of low-cost smartphones. Jio's ARPU Could be The Highest in Overall MarketReliance Jio's average revenue per user (ARPU) could be the highest in the coming time because of a large number of high-paying 4G subscribers. But the telco's ARPU has dipped in the short term because of the higher proportion of inactive subscribers and also higher penetration of the low-paying JioPhone subscriber base. Jio can increase its ARPU by growing its fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) segment that brings in higher ARPU than the mobile business. Jio Might Target Tariff Hikes EarlyICICI Securities said that Jio might aim for an early tariff hike. The telco might increase the benefits with the prices of its plans attracting more customers to purchase its services. But Jio would only increase tariffs if the current market structure is maintained. Jio's cost inflation is expected to be very high in the near term because of the recent purchase of spectrum worth Rs 571 billion and rentals to towers and fibre InvITs. If the telco's revenues don't grow, it might report a dip in the earnings. |

Rumours started spreading about the same via a Twitter leak by heyitsyogesh which was later supported by Ice Universe on Weibo. Olympus is a leading manufacturer of optical and reprography products from the time it began its operation in 1919. In case the partnership gets confirmed between both parties, Samsung will become one of the brands to have outsourced its camera from camera manufacturers besides Huawei, OnePlus and Vivo. | BSNL Might Privatise Tower Company, Employee Union Unhappy: Report Posted: 07 Apr 2021 11:35 PM PDT
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is looking to privatise its subsidiary company 'BSNL Tower Company Limited' (BTCL). The employee union of the telco has objected to the said move and worries that it is not in the best interests of the company’s future. For the unaware, BTCL is an infrastructure unit of BSNL that helps the telco manage its mobile network towers. The government is said to be looking for a strategic partner for the company. According to an ET Telecom report, after the deal, BSNL wouldn't be the company’s majority stakeholder. BSNL Employee Union (BSNLEU) General Secretary P Abhimanyu said that bringing a 'strategic partner' and privatising the subsidiary company would mean the power will slip away from the state government’s hands and transfer to the private entities. Abhimanyu recalled that because of strong resistance from the union, BSNL couldn't go ahead with its IPO plans for the tower company but is now looking to privatise it by selling a major stake to a private entity/entities. Back in 2017, the Cabinet had approved for the plan of separating BSNL's tower assets with the telecom company and form a new subsidiary so that focus on operations could be achieved. At present, BSNL operates 68,000 sites tower sites, out of which 7,000 sites are shared with Reliance Jio, and more than 13,000 sites are leased to other private operators. The employee union group is worried about the future of the telco. Abhimanyu said that this would directly impact BSNL since it is the first step towards privatising the telco, however strategic it may seem. The government has already decided to privatise BSNL's tower company despite objections from the employee union. The employee body was told that the tower company, after being privatised, will focus on building smart cities and more such programs to stay away from the telecom business. This is to help with reducing the license fee that the telco has to pay. |

| Tata Sky Broadband Expands 1 Gbps Plan Availability to More Cities in India Posted: 07 Apr 2021 06:32 PM PDT
Tata Sky Broadband has expanded the availability of its 1 Gbps speed plan to more cities in India. The internet service provider (ISP) started by offering the 1 Gbps plan in the Wagholi Suburb, Pune. The rest of the cities/circles got a maximum speed plan of either 500 Mbps or 300 Mbps. But now, Tata Sky Broadband has expanded its 1 Gbps plan offering to more cities including Mumbai/Navi Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Kolkata. We could't confirm the availability of the plan in other circles of India. But we expect the 1 Gbps plan to be available in each circle Tata Sky Broadband is providing its services in. Let's take a look at the 1 Gbps plan and its pricing. Tata Sky Broadband 1 Gbps Plan Price and PoliciesThe 1 Gbps broadband plan from Tata Sky comes for a monthly cost of Rs 3,600, quarterly cost of Rs 10,800, semi-annual cost of Rs 19,800, and annual cost of Rs 36,000. This brings down the price of the plan from Rs 3,600 per month to Rs 3,300 per month (for 6 months/semi-annual plan) and Rs 3,000 per month (for 12 months/annual plan). So the users will effectively save a total of Rs 1,800 with the 6 months plan and Rs 7,200 with the 12 months plan. For the unaware, Tata Sky offers 3,300GB or 3.3TB fair usage policy (FUP) data with its 1 Gbps plan. Post consumption of FUP data, the speed for the users will drop to 3 Mbps. Do note that users living in the Kalyan-Dombivali city will only get a total of 1.5TB or 1,500GB FUP data in a month. Users who want to get a landline connection will have to purchase the telephone equipment separately. Further, Tata Sky Broadband has specified on its website that the user will get up to 450 Mbps speed with its 1 Gbps plan when on Wi-Fi and up to 900 Mbps speed using LAN. Adding to this, the connected device to the Tata Sky Broadband network should be able to support 5 GHz band connectivity. However, the user can easily get more than 450 Mbps speed on his/her Wi-Fi network if they purchase a modern router with support for latest-generation technologies. Tata Sky will provide free installation to the users along with free dual-band router which will only be able to support up to 450 Mbps speeds. In comparison, Airtel Xstream Fiber offers users a 4×4 Wi-Fi router for free when they purchase the 1 Gbps plan. The router can easily support very high speeds of up to 1 Gbps while the one provided by Tata Sky is not good enough. This is a little strange from Tata Sky Broadband since the company should ideally provide the users with an apt Wi-Fi router when they purchase the 1 Gbps plan. However, users have the option of not going with the router provided by Tata Sky Broadband. They can get a 4×4 Wi-Fi router very easily in the local market or online and elevate their internet experience. |
