T-Mobile is Offering Samsung Galaxy A32 5G for Free in US, Check Details

T-Mobile has taken the 5G game to another level today in the United States by announcing that the company is offering a free Samsung Galaxy A32 5G if you give them your old phone. Yes! We are not joking, it’s true, but there is still some catch to it. Do note that the phone you are giving away has to be in working condition. The official website also confirmed that you can also trade in any phone be it a flip phone. Let's have a closer look at the announcement made by T-Mobile to take on its rivals.

T-Mobile Offering Free Samsung Galaxy A32 5G

According to the telco, 60 million users are still stuck on an AT&T or Verizon smartphone with limited data plans. The company also claimed that most of the users don't even get 5G access at the average price they are paying to other telecom operators. With T-Mobile, users can upgrade to an unlimited 5G data plan at the same price or even less compared to other operators.

Do note that the company is offering the Samsung Galaxy A32 5G smartphone after 24 monthly bill credits and it is only charging the sales tax. Nothing comes for free, but the deal is pretty awesome because you don’t have to pay the entire amount and it’s almost free. Also, this offer applies to new and existing customers.

The cherry on the cake is that the existing T-Mobile postpaid customer, including all former Sprint customers who are still on a limited data plan will be upgraded to an unlimited data plan for absolutely free. It seems that T-Mobile has become Reliance Jio for the United States telecom subscribers. The company has come up with some bold marketing moves that seem to lure in more subscribers.

Meanwhile, the company has also launched its Home Internet with more than 30 million households eligible. This makes the company one of the largest broadband providers in the entire country.

Xiaomi, Oppo Might Go Apple’s Way and Introduce In-House 5G Chips: Report

Posted: 09 Apr 2021 07:23 AM PDT

Qualcomm and MediaTek are the two big names when it comes to smartphone chipsets manufacturing. Both the companies have dominated the entire smartphone market worldwide. All the major smartphone brands across the globe are relying on these two brands for smartphone processors. However, it seems that new players are also invigorating themselves to step into the chipset industry. As per the reports, Xiaomi and OPPO are working on their in-house 5G smartphone SoCs. Yes! You read it correctly, soon we might   witness Xiaomi and OPPO smartphones with their in-house chipsets and it would be really interesting to welcome new players in the chipset market.

Xiaomi and OPPO Mobile SoCs

We are not claiming anything right now, but a report from Digitimes has suggested that both the Chinese smartphone brands are planning to launch their in-house sub-6 GHz 5G smartphone CPUs either at the end of this year or in early 2022. Further, the report suggests that Unisoc, the Shanghai-based chip maker company is going to join both companies to help them in developing their SoCs.

The news popped up on the internet in the wake of China's growing investments in the semiconductor industry. It seems that the country is expanding its efforts to produce chips in the home country. This will make them independent and they wouldn't have to rely on other foreign chipset makers like Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Huawei already faced some big challenges from the US government. The country has cut down on all the component sales to Huawei for its smartphones. This could happen to any other Chinese smartphone manufacturer if the US-China relation doesn't seem to be settling down anytime soon. Keeping all these consequences in mind the Chinese government has ramped up its efforts to become self-dependent.

Going with the earlier rumours, it was reported that Oppo is planning to enter the chipset industry with its mobile SoC called Mariana Plan. According to the reports, the chipset development for Oppo is led by a former senior Qualcomm executive. However, we are still uncertain about the information and suggest you take it with a grain of salt.

Xiaomi on the other hand recently announced its first in-house image signal processing (ISP) chip called the Surge C1. The successful chip making shows that the company is capable enough of developing a 5G smartphone chipset. It would be interesting to see some more players in the chipset market giving competition to well established Qualcomm and MediaTek.

Airtel is Moving Fast With 5G in International Markets

Airtel's international units are working fast to introduce 5G networks. Airtel Kenya already has more than 500 5G-ready sites in the country. 5G coverage will depend a lot on the kind of spectrum that is availed to the telcos. Operators need a wide and more comprehensive range of airwaves to provide true 5G speeds to the users.

This is what Airtel Kenya is waiting for. According to a Developing Telecoms report, nearly 600 sites in the country's three important locations have been upgraded to be 5G supportive. The concerned three locations of Kenya include Nairobi, Mombasa, and Malindi.

Airtel Kenya Managing Director Prasanta Das Sharma said that the telco is just waiting for the government to allocate the necessary spectrum. Sharma said that Airtel wouldn't have to do any further work on the sites that are already upgraded to be 5G ready. All that the operator has to do is get the spectrum and decide when to switch on the 5G services.

But Airtel Kenya is waiting for the right time to roll out 5G services. The telco believes that the availability of low-cost 5G smartphones is critical to see successful 5G operations in Kenya.

So the operator expects to roll out 5G commercially in Kenya by 2023, which is two years down the line from now. India is also expected to get 5G networks with a wide-scale availability in the next two years as more and more mid-range, and low-cost 5G smartphones are launched in the country.

The Indian operators are waiting for the government to avail the spectrum for 5G services. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had announced a revised National Frequency Allocation Plan (NFAP), which includes more range of frequency bands for the operators to leverage for rolling out 5G in India.

Airtel can use the dynamic spectrum sharing (DSS) technology for rolling out 5G and 4G together from the same network core. The 5G spectrum auction for India is slated for the second half of 2021.

Telecom Users Keen to Know Which Operator Deliver Quality Video Experience

Posted: 09 Apr 2021 05:50 AM PDT

telecom-users-keen-operator-deliver-quality-video
Telecom users are "interested in understanding which operator has the highest video experience score," says Ian Fogg, vice president analysis at Opensignal. Fogg told TelecomTalk that video consumption has become one of the "largest drivers of mobile data usage" largely due to the improvements to smartphone display. Opensignal, a mobile analytics company in late March, 2021, released its Mobile Network Experience report with the company highlighting that the Indian telecom operators recorded "improvements" across the majority of its metrics. The company said that the "mobile network experience" has continued to remain as a "key indicator" for telecom users switching operators especially as "price differentiation" between operators "reduces in India."

Video Experience Emerges As Key Metric for Telecom Users

Opensignal said that Bharti Airtel, the second largest wireless operator in India won three of its "experiential metrics" including video experience, voice app and games experience. Vi, the third largest wireless operator is said to have won both of Opensignal's speed metrics including upload speed experience and download speed experience. Further, Reliance Jio, the largest mobile operator in India "as usual" won 4G availability and 4G coverage experience metric.

"As smartphone displays have become larger, with improved contrast and colours, more and more mobile users watch video on their smartphones for longer periods and so are interested in understanding which operator has the highest Video Experience score," Fogg told TelecomTalk.

With a score of 60.3 points, Airtel is said to be in the "good" category on Opensignal's video experience metric while Vi is "snapping on its heels" with a score of 60.1 points. In the previous Mobile Network Experience report for September 2020, Vi is said to have scored 54.2 points with Opensignal highlighting that the third largest operator recorded the "greatest improvement." Airtel in comparison recorded a 2.8 points growth since the previous Mobile Network Experience report.

"Improvements in video experience usually come from either reducing the time users' see video playback stalling and improving how quickly video streams start to play," Fogg said.

Reliance Jio and the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) recorded scores of 53.3 points and 38.6 points on the Opensignal video experience metric for March, 2021.

Similarly, ICICI Securities, a firm engaged in financial services in a report on Thursday said that the telecom operators are "becoming critical" in "pushing" the digital entertainment ecosystem.

"Entertainment industry is fast adopting digital media, particularly for video," ICICI Securities said in its report. "India has seen significant adoption of OTT for snacking videos even in long formats. Operators have developed their own apps such as Airtel XStream, My Jio, and Vi Movies and TV, which they hope to monetise in the future."

ICICI Securities also highlighted that the data usage now ranges from virtual meetings to online shopping as compared to earlier days where "data was used predominantly for communications" and entertainment.

Spectrum Auctions to Shake Competitive Landscape

Meanwhile, Opensignal in its Mobile Network Experience report for March, highlighted that Airtel only had a narrow lead on Vi in the games experience metric. According to Opensignal, Airtel scored 58.5 points with Vi scoring 58 points while "Jio and BSNL were further away" with the operators scoring 48.1 points and 36.9 points respectively. The games experience metric was introduced by the company in the September 2020 report with Opensignal highlighting that the metric scores are affected by "mobile network conditions including latency, packet loss and jitter."

"We believe in testing the real-world experience of users and games experience is an excellent approach to understanding the multiplayer gaming experience," Fogg said. "Games Experience is important for many mobile users. Operators that wish to acquire or retain mobile gamers will be in a stronger position if they have high Games Experience scores."

The Mobile Network Experience report for March also said that the telecom market in India is "changing" as the government held the spectrum auctions for the first time since 2016. The company said that "it will be interesting to see how the competition shapes up in India" as the operators "make use of the newly acquired spectrum" to enhance capacity and coverage.

"Spectrum is a critical asset for mobile operators," Fogg said. "So, the results of this and future spectrum auctions will help shape the competitive future position of each of India's operators."

Airtel Flares the Most Debated Question From AGR Dues Matter Last Year: Report

Posted: 09 Apr 2021 04:31 AM PDT

airtel-agr-dues-matter-last-year

Bharti Airtel, India's second-largest telco, had flared up the highly debated question from the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues case last year. The Supreme Court (SC) had posed a fundamental question asking should the telcos be able to sell spectrum if they have pending AGR dues on it.

Later on, the question came down to the principle of 'which' party will pay the dues. Should the telco 'selling’ the spectrum still be liable after freeing the airwaves from its portfolio, or are the dues a liability of the 'current holder' of the spectrum.

According to an ET Telecom report, Bharti Airtel has denied clearing the AGR liability on the spectrum it purchased from Videocon. Airtel acquired the concerned spectrum from Videocon in 2016.

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has filed an affidavit in the SC saying that Airtel is denying to pay the Rs 1,376 crores worth of AGR dues that Videocon had to pay. DoT had asked Airtel to pay the dues of Videocon back in October 2020 and again in February 2020.

But the telco had replied each time that it is not liable to pay off another company’s debt. Airtel believes that the said amount is a liability of Videocon, and thus it won't pay DoT the amount it is looking for.

Airtel said that it is not liable to pay any outstanding dues of Videocon, be it AGR dues, spectrum usage charges (SUC), or License fee (LF) dues. For the unaware, Airtel had purchased spectrum in 2016 in six circles from Videocon in the 1800 MHz frequency band for Rs 4,428 crores.

Adding to this, DoT has filed an affidavit against the telcos for not paying the 10% advance on AGR dues. The telcos have said that they had already paid more than what the SC had asked them to. Airtel believes that it doesn't need to pay any AGR dues for the next four instalments.

The three partners essentially inked an agreement that states that they will cooperate in developing technologies related to terahertz frequencies.

LG to Start Researching for 6G Technologies.

Just to let you know, terahertz frequency is a vital frequency band for 6G communication, and it's still yet to be standardized. The research will be all around the band and 6G technologies. As per a rcrwireless report, the tech giant is planning to complete the entire research by 2024. LG suggested that the 6G technologies will be faster and reliable than the 5G network, which is an obvious of coure. It will come with a higher data speed with a low latency rate. The company is expecting to commercialize 6G in 2029. Last year, the company had shown its interest in studying 6G technologies and signed a contract with the Korean Research Institute of Standards and Science for 6G study.

In 2019, LG, in collaboration with KAIST, constructed a 6G research center for future research and development. It seems that the centers are soon going to be more active than earlier. Keysight Technologies will be the sole supplier of equipment to LG and KAIST's 6G research center. Further, the report also suggests that Korea’s government is expected to invest KRW 200 billion (approx USD 179.2 million) to secure basic 6G technology. The American multinational telecommunication entity Verizon plans to amplify its 5G footprint in the US region by deploying network repeaters from SureCall and FRTek. The massive customer base of Verizon in the US will soon witness increased 5G Ultra Wideband coverage for 5G business, home and utility connections.

What are Network Repeaters?

In case you are not aware, network repeaters take signals from nearby cell sites of the telco and hoist the signal from those sites for retransmission to previously untouched areas. The retransmission of signals makes the undeserved areas crucial for 5G networks in populated dense areas.

Extension of 5G Service Footprint in the US is Cost Effective: Adam Koeppe

Adam Koeppe, Senior Vice President of Planning and Technology for Verizon, stated that the company had doubled the reach of 5G services in significant mmWave markets by including small cells. Now, Verizon strives to deploy network repeaters to elevate network performance. Koeppe also stated that the extension of the 5G service footprint in the US region using network repeaters is a cost-effective, fast and efficient way.

SureCall's Network Booster Can Run on Solar Energy with No Power Connection

Horizon, a patent-pending 5G mmWave network booster developed by Horizon, will help Verizon expand 5G coverage and deliver high-speed connections in a cost-effective manner. Also, SureCall's network booster provides the largest coverage footprint with power efficiency. The network booster has the capability to run on solar energy without a power grid connection.

PrimAer, the cutting-edge network booster technology by FRTek, will allow Verizon to direct 5G mmWave service in remote areas using the FRTek software. Mill Woo, CEO of FRTek, stated that the company is thrilled that Verizon has opted for PrimAer as part of their 5G strategy. The company is looking forward to being a part of Verizon's 5G expansion in the US.

Vodafone Idea Did Not Pay License Fee to DoT for Q4 FY21: Report

Posted: 08 Apr 2021 11:41 PM PDT

vodafone-idea-did-not-pay-license-fee

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been issued a show-cause notice by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) for not paying the license fee for Q4 FY21. Vi's last date for paying the license fee was March 25, 2021.

As per a BusinessLine report, the telco has missed out on paying the license fee for seven circles in India, including Gujarat, Bihar, Jammu & Kashmir, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, and Uttar Pradesh East.

DoT's letter to Vi mentioned that the telco had not paid the fee for national long distance licenses.

Show Cause Notice to Vi for April 12, 2021

DoT has issued a show-cause notice to Vi for appearing at the court on April 12, 2021. The telco will be given a chance to explain why any action should not be taken against it. If Vi is unable to communicate the reasons for why it couldn't pay the dues, an action will be taken against it.

As per the Unified License Agreement, operators are required to pay the licensee fee in a quarterly manner, meaning four times a financial year. Every licensee must pay the entire dues for the last quarter by March 25.

During the last quarter of FY20, Vi had paid Rs 1,367 crores in spectrum usage charges (SuC) and license fee, while in the first quarter of FY21, the telco paid Rs 1,200 crores for the same.

An official statement from Vi is yet to come on the matter. The telco has been going through a loss for several consecutive quarters now. Vi might cite reasons such as poor financials or huge debt and interest payments for not being able to pay the mandatory dues.

The show-cause notice has asked Vi to appear in the court on April 12, 2021, which is just 2 days away from now. The investors of the company will be looking forward to the answers present by Vi for the missed payments.

BSNL Users Won’t Have to Pay Installation Charges on New Connections: Details

Posted: 08 Apr 2021 08:30 PM PDT

bsnl-ftth-connection-installation-charges

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has waived off the installation charges for any kind of fixed-line connection that a user opts for until April 30, 2021. The telco offers multiple services such as fiber broadband connections, DSL broadband connections, and landline service.

The installation charges for a new connection for either of the services is waived off until April 30, 2021. BSNL announced the information through a circular dated April 8, 2021. The offer is not limited to any particular circle but will be available pan-India.

The telco's head office in Delhi has released the circular asking every other state and circle to update the information on their website as well. Further, the above offer has been put into effect right away.

Meaning starting now and until April 30, 2021, BSNL users looking for broadband or a landline connection won't have to pay any installation charges.

How Much Do Customers Have to Pay for Installation of a New BSNL Connection?

If you are wondering how much exactly the users are saving with this new offer from BSNL, well, it is a considerable amount.

For broadband-only connections, BSNL users have to pay Rs 250 as the installation charge. But for Bharat Fibre connections, users need to pay Rs 500 as the installation charge. It is again Rs 250 for getting a broadband connection over the existing voice calling service.

In comparison to JioFiber, this cost is nothing. JioFiber users need to pay Rs 1,000 as installation charges that is non-refundable and Rs 1,500 for a security deposit against the ONU devices provided by the company. The security deposit is fully refundable though.

Do note that the BSNL users can be exempted from paying for installation charges if they simply choose to buy a broadband plan for the long term. With the long-term plans, the installation charges are zero, so while this is a limited offer, if you are thinking of getting a long-term plan, you don't have to worry about paying an installation charge anyway.

Vodafone Idea Business Plus Postpaid Plans Offer Location Tracking And More at Rs 299

Posted: 08 Apr 2021 06:32 PM PDT

vi-business-plus-postpaid-plans-299

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has an enterprise arm called Vi Business. The primary goal of Vi Business is to take care of the connectivity needs that every enterprise in India has. Vi works very closely with its clients to provide them with a customised digital connectivity solution ensuring smooth operations.

Vi is now offering Business Plus postpaid plans to the users. These plans come with a variety of benefits that the normal postpaid plans from the telco don't. The Vodafone Idea Business Plus postpaid plans are tailored to meet the needs of enterprises.

The great thing about the Business Plus postpaid plans is that they start at only Rs 299 and offer a lot of benefits against it. Just for comparison, the normal postpaid plans from Vi start at Rs 399 per month.

But this makes sense. Generally, enterprises will purchase the plan for more number of people instead of one employee; thus, a cheaper entry-level plan still stands to bring plenty of revenues for the telco because it can benefit from the economies of scale.

Vi's Business Plus Postpaid plans offer a ton of benefits. Let's take a look at them.

Vi Business Plus Postpaid Plan Benefits

Vi Business Plus postpaid plan offers four key benefits to the enterprises and their employees. The first one is 'location tracking'. With the Vodafone Idea Business Plus postpaid plan, enterprises can track the location of their field employees very easily to ensure their safety is maintained.

Further, there is mobile security. Devices from the company will require security to keep the data from being stolen. Vi can do that for the enterprises with its digital security solution provided by the Business Plus postpaid plans.

The Business Plus postpaid plans also make data costs more efficient for the enterprise. Businesses can manage the surplus data that's left to be consumed by the employees by pooling it and using it later.

Lastly, the Vi Business Plus postpaid plans offer users an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP for 1-year to keep their entertainment needs to be satiated.

Further, Vi allows the individual employees to purchase add-on services on their original plan offered to them by the enterprise.

Enterprises can contact Vi Business through the company’s website and purchase Business Plus postpaid plans according to their needs. Vi can create customised solutions and plans for enterprises to ensure that every need of theirs is taken care of.

There are more services that Vi provides to enterprises through its business solutions arm. To check them out, visit the website of telco.
