Telecom Italia Might Remove Huawei From Italy’s 5G Network Plans

Posted: 01 May 2021 08:41 AM PDT

Telecom Italia Huawei 5G

The Italian telecommunications giant Telecom Italia is planning to slash the equipment contract with the Chinese vendor Huawei. The contract was supposed to allow Huawei to supply the equipment to build part of the telco's 5G network in Italy. The telecom giant shared an official letter informing Huawei about the contract dismissal. The information of the letter was first reported by renowned Italian newspaper II Sole 24 Ore. Both Telecom Italia and Huawei have not released any official statement regarding the matter. The sources aware of the matter also speculate that the entire contract will be distributed between Nokia and Ericsson.

The United States Wants Countries to Ban Huawei Telecom Equipment

Chinese telecom gear makers have been on the radar for security concerns. In Europe, Britain and Sweden have already banned Huawei's telecom gear for developing 5G networks. The United States has been voluble about the development, and the nation is pressuring countries to ban Huawei telecom equipment, citing security risks. Huawei, on the other side, has denied all the security risk allegations. Currently, Italy has not imposed a strict ban on Huawei. However, looking at the current legislation, the nation is expected to form strict conditions and policies on 5G deals involving non-EU vendors.

Nokia and Ericsson Might Fully Develop Telecom Italia's Network

Earlier, Telecom Italia was investing in Ericsson and Huawei equally to develop the 5G network in the country. However, as cited in a report by Reuters, Nokia was included in the equipment contract. Now it is speculated that Nokia and Ericsson will share the entire contract equally. Even though the ban is not imposed by the Italian government, Huawei might have to fly away from the market because of the stringent policies and pressure of the United States. As reported by one of the sources, the move by the telecom giant has been made after reviewing supply policies along with cost and benefit analysis. Tracing back to last year, Huawei was not invited to fill the tender for the development of Telecom Italia's 5G network. Huawei is absent in the core 5G network development of the telco, where sensitive data is processed.

Nokia Private 5G Network

The Finnish telecom giant, Nokia, has inked a contract with Nornickel, a Russian palladium and nickel mining company, to facilitate a private 5G network in their underground mines. As reported by 5G Radar, Nokia secured the contact after a successful test of their pilot project at the Skalysty mine. Nornickel will employ the 5G private network to run remote-controlled machinery and monitor safety. The private 5G network will also assist the mining company in ensuring smooth overall operations.

More on the Pilot Project in Russia

As per the announcement made by Nokia and Nornickel, the entities ran a successful pilot project on the Nokia industrial-grade private wireless connected digital mine solution that included Flexi Zone Micro LTE, Nokia Airscale 5G base stations and 4.9/LTE and 5G core hardware and software with a distinct solution for group communications that were critical for the mission. The project was conducted at a depth of 875 meters of the Skalysty mine in Russia.

Also, telecom companies Tele2, Qualcomm and a mining company, SPBEK-Mining, extended their hands to reduce complications and hurdles in the project. The pilot project embedded confidence in Nokia's private LTE/5G-ready technologies to provide reliable support in facilitating wireless broadband communications in an underground mining environment. Nornickel will use the private 5G network to remotely manage the machinery, video surveillance, and communication between production sites and control centre through voice and data communications.

Nornickel is considering using LTE and later 5G Technologies

Liana Ermishina, who is the Director of the Information Technology Department at Nornickel, said that the world is eyeing the usage of the 5G network in the industrial segment, and our company is no exception. The level of industrial efficiency and automation at the mines developed by Nornickel is constantly elevated, and technologies are being rolled out, driving further requirements for wireless data transmission networks. Nornickel is considering using LTE and later 5G technologies underground because these networks are best suited, and it would aid in the production process.

Looking forward to working with multiple Russian enterprises: Nokia

Demetrio Russo, who is Vice President of Nokia Eastern Europe, marked that Nokia is grateful to work with Nornickel on this project, which provides critical infrastructure for developing digital technologies at Nornickel's enterprises. Nokia's 5G solutions are slowly pushing the basic demand levels in the enterprise market, with the share of enterprise customers in Nokia 5G deals reaching 12%. Nokia has developed a comprehensive portfolio of solutions to support many private wireless network deployment scenarios across various industries.

Telegram to Start Offering Group Video Calls From May

Telegram Group Video Calls

Telegram is one of WhatsApp's biggest competitors, who also stole the limelight from the Facebook-owned application during its controversial privacy-related issues. With this, Telegram started to offer lots of features that made it better than WhatsApp, with the exception of one key feature.

This feature is about group video calls feature, something that became quite popular over the course of 2020, with more people moving online. WhatsApp decided to increase the number of participants for these calls, whilst Zoom and Google Meet saw increased traffic.

Now, it has been revealed that Telegram will soon be adding the Group video calls feature to the application, alongside support for web-based video conferencing, so you can make use of the feature on any device.

Telegram New Video Calling Feature

The announcement regarding this feature was made by the founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, via a text message that he posted on his official Telegram channel, as was reported by TechCrunch.

The report also mentions that Durov added to his text by saying that the company will be adding a video dimension to its voice chats in May, making the application a powerful platform for group video calls.

Furthermore, he added that Screen sharing, desktop and tablet support and encryption would be added to the modern video conferencing tool but with Telegram-level UI, speed and encryption. There is also support for noise cancellation.

As for the current situation, the app offers support for one-to-one video calls but only group voice chats.

The report also noted that Durov's post emphasised encryption, which might have been in a bid to throw shade at Zoom, which skyrocketed to popularity. It is not known, though, as to whether there will be end-to-end encryption.

As for other Telegram related news, the company recently released its latest update that brings with it a new payment system, scheduled voice chats and two new web versions, which had gone live in April.

Do note; this does not mean that the two new web versions, which have recently gone live, do not replace the pre-existing web version that was the first version from the company.

Reliance Jio 5G, What We Know So Far

Posted: 01 May 2021 02:53 AM PDT

Reliance Jio 5G

Reliance Jio has been very vocal about bringing 5G networks and connectivity to India as soon as possible. The telco has been working on developing indigenous 5G equipment to roll out a home-grown 5G network for its users. Jio has already deployed and tested its indigenous RAN and 5G network and got a delivery of 1 Gbps throughput.

Mukesh Ambani had earlier said that Reliance Jio would bring 5G to India in the second half of 2021. However, to do that, Jio will now have to utilise the Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology since the telecom department is yet to come up with an updated National Frequency Allocation Policy (NFAP) detailing spectrum bands that will be used for 5G in India.

Until the time the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) doesn't avail the dedicated 5G spectrum to the telcos, they can't roll out 5G in the most efficient and effective manner. Note that Jio's spectrum portfolio is 5G focused. All that the telco needs is a high-frequency spectrum, and it will be all set to roll out 5G.

Reliance Jio Has Largest Spectrum Footprint in sub-GHz Band Throughout India

In the recent spectrum auctions, Jio acquired a ton of spectrum across multiple bands by spending Rs 57,123 crore, out of which the telco had to make an upfront payment of Rs 19,939 crore. Later, Jio also acquired spectrum from Bharti Airtel in the 800 MHz bands topping its sub-GHz band holding in the country even further.

Now, Reliance Jio has at least 2 blocks of 10 MHz spectrum in the 800 MHz band in 18 out of the 22 circles of India. The sub-GHz spectrum will be fruitful for the telco when it rolls out the 5G network in India.

This is because sub-GHz bands are regarded as excellent when it comes to providing long network coverage. Once Jio gets high-frequency bands from the 5G spectrum, it will be able to leverage its entire spectrum portfolio for rolling out 5G fast in India.

Further, Jio now has at least 2 blocks of 10 MHz spectrum in the 1800 MHz band in the entire India. On top of this, Jio is the only operator in India which has PAN-India 40 MHz of spectrum in the 2300 MHz band.

Reliance Jio Testing 5G Network

Reliance Jio 5G in India

Jio is already testing its 5G network and indigenous radio equipment for fine-tuning its performance. The company is also working with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to standardise the configurations for 5G devices.

We expect the telco to come out with an announcement related to 5G in its Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled later this year.

Reliance Jio Made Rs 12,537 Crore During FY21

Yesterday, the financial results of Reliance Jio for FY21 was released. The telco made a net profit of Rs 12,537 crore during the entire year and added 37.9 million net subscribers. However, Jio's average revenue per user (ARPU) dropped from Rs 151 to Rs 138.2 for the last quarter due to multiple reasons. The telco ended FY21 with 426.2 million subscribers in the bag, which is the highest for any operator in the country.

PLI Scheme Needs to Be Re-Looked At: Report

Posted: 01 May 2021 01:19 AM PDT

pli-scheme-india
Samsung, HP, Dell, Wistron and Foxconn have recently come out and called for targets in the upcoming production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for hardware to either be revised or for the timeline to be extended.

These companies, by reaching out to the ministry of electronics and IT via separate meeting, said that without these proposed changes, applicants might be discouraged from taking up the scheme and investing in India.

They also mentioned that the changes are required to avoid a situation that the mobile phone manufacturers saw, with only one of the 16 handset companies reaching their target for FY21 despite timely investments.

The companies lay emphasis on how the government must keep in mind the global supply chain issues and the coronavirus situation in India before setting output timelines that are a bit too ambitious for devices like laptops and tablets.

What More Is Mentioned?

As per a statement by Nitin Kunkolienker, president of the Manufacturers' Association for IT, PIL was conceptualised in a pre-Covid era, but there is a need to relook at the scheme, with the targets being either revised or a provision of five years, rather than the previously set four years to qualify for incentives.

He also mentioned that the scheme is a two-way partnership between the government and the industry, with the government being a larger beneficiary with 60% of the gain by way of tax and non-tax revenue, economic activity, employment and way of foreign exchange.

In India, all but one of the 16 PLI companies that had been approved to make phones in October failed to meet their targets for the first year that ended on March 31, 2021.

The other companies, with the exception of Samsung, have been asking the ministry to declare FY21 as a zero year due to the restrictions set by the Covid-19 pandemic.

For those of you unaware, the ministry notified the scheme for tablets, PCs, servers and laptops in March with incentives worth Rs 7,325 crore to be disbursed over a span of four years to ten domestic companies and five global companies.

According to the guidelines, foreign companies are required to invest Rs 500 crore and achieve incremental sales of at least Rs 1,000 crore in the first year, followed by Rs 2,500 crore in the second, Rs 5,000 crore in the third and Rs 10,000 crore by the fourth and final year.

As for domestic firms, the target was set at Rs 20 crore, with incremental increases at Rs 50 crore, Rs 100 crore, Rs 200 crore and finally, Rs 300 crore for the fourth year,

The government also set a value addition criterion for the second year, when companies would be required to start assembling printed circuit boards in India, followed by battery packs for the third year and power adaptors, cabinets, chassis or enclosures in the fourth year.

If all these criteria were to be met, companies would receive an incentive of 1-4% on incremental sales over the base year, FY20. The last date for applications is set at April 30.

WhatsApp New Feature Makes It Easier To View Videos And Images

Posted: 30 Apr 2021 11:39 PM PDT

WhatsApp New Feature

Disputed messaging service WhatsApp seems to be on a roll in terms of rolling out features in favour of the user, adding to the overall usability factor. Today, the company announced that it is rolling out a new update that comes with a feature that will greatly improve the use case scenario for the application.

This comes days after the company started testing a feature to control the playback speed for messages sent via WhatsApp using one’s voice, better known as audio messages.

What Does The New WhatsApp Update Include?

The feature that is being touted to be useful for the user will not seem to be quite major, as it is not one that will turn heads. Despite this, it is meant to be a handy feature. This feature is that of a bigger view of photos and videos in the chat. What does this mean?

This feature means that the application will now display the pictures and videos sent via chat in a bigger format to make them easier to see and view.

This announcement came via a tweet from WhatsApp, including an example of this new feature will work. As per the tweet, Photos that will be sent via WhatsApp usually appear cropped, with the user having to open it to view the complete image.

In comparison, the new update makes sure that the application displays the entire photo within the chat, reducing the cumbersome process of having to tap the image to see the entire image. This also applies to the videos.

Whilst this is not a major feature, it is surely handy for those who use the application more on their tablet or laptops, which feature bigger displays. Even devices launched in the last two years sport relatively larger displays, so this will be useful.

For those of you wondering, this feature was first rolled out to iOS users earlier this month with the update version 2.21.71 in the App Store, but now the proper rollout is occurring for all of the application's users.

To add to all of this, Twitter also started testing a feature like this for its application, with full view photos on the timeline. What this did was make it possible to view images in full view rather than in the currently used Autocrop mode, which usually cuts out the key part of the image.

Now, the image the user will tweet will not appear half; rather it will appear to the viewer just as it does to the composer of the tweet whilst tweeting it. As of now, users are required to tap the image to view the entirety of the image, which also hides the text part.

The new feature will ensure that tweets do not appear out of context due to the auto cropped images, which might also result in problems of interpreting what it is that the tweet wishes to convey.

Broadband connection upgrade in India

In modern times, the internet has become an extension of our lives. With an endless number of uses ranging from professional services to the source of entertainment, the internet has become a basic necessity to get things rolling. Imagine that your broadband internet connection starts to have frequent problems of disconnections, speed and range. You would probably want to reconsider your choice of broadband connection and the service provider. When it comes to the internet, one should not compromise. High-speed internet at our budget is a dream. If you are still thinking to get an upgrade to your broadband internet plans or service provider, here are some points that can help you make the right decision.

Technology is Fast Obsolete

Tech companies release the latest versions of the devices that we use regularly. These "upgraded" devices have enhanced capabilities to empower and support faster internet connections. The technology that broadband internet service providers employ to deliver the internet also changes from time to time. It feels like it was just yesterday when we were all impressed by the 4G internet speed, and now we have infrastructures for 5G being spread across the globe. The point being, if you have a connection leveraging outdated technology for providing broadband internet, it is time that you changed it.

Broadband Frequent Outages

Broadband connection outages can be both planned and unplanned. Both of those impact us dearly. The reasons for these outages could be anything from disintegrated wiring to router issues. Your broadband service provider should keep the pre-informed planned maintenance outages to the bare minimum and resolve unplanned outages in a timely and seamless manner.

A large Number of Users

Our future is unprecedented. You may have a different environment than before in terms of our internet consumption. Also, you may have more users connecting to one broadband internet connection that would require more bandwidth to get more work done on the internet. A particular internet setup provided by your broadband service provider is best suited as per your current needs. If there is any change in the way you use the internet, it might be time for you to upgrade your broadband connection.

Every Device is Smart

Our traditional devices are becoming smarter with the expansion of technology. Our smartphones, phones, televisions and even vacuum cleaners are now becoming part of a smart ecosystem. As these devices turn from traditional to smart, they start to interact with us using the internet. These devices make our lives easier, making it inevitable to ignore them. Within the near future, gradually, we will replace and upgrade to smart devices. This will require an increased internet bandwidth for functioning seamlessly, and thus having the best possible broadband internet plan would be the way to go.
