Apple Will Use Unique Technique to Reduce Size of the Notch

Posted: 14 May 2021 08:54 AM PDT

iPhone

Apple's latest and greatest iPhone 12 series has already been replaced with talks of the iPhone 13 lineup ripe in the market. From offering a smaller notch to a better set of cameras, tips suggest improvements on an all-around basis for the next-gen of iPhones.

With these rumours, the most talked about one is the prospect of a smaller notch, users having been annoyed for some time over the large and cumbersome notch that has been present on the iPhone since the iPhone X.

Now, it seems that Apple is actually going to make this much-awaited change and, rumours are now providing some insight into how the company will make this possible without removing its coveted Face ID.

How Is Apple Shrinking The Notch?

iPhone 13

Supply chain sources, in conversation to DigiTimes (via MacRumors), have come forward to reveal that Apple is truly developing a much smaller Face ID system to be implemented on the upcoming iPhone and iPad Pro models, with the first device launching in late 2021, hinting at the iPhone 13 debut.

In order to achieve this much smaller notch size, the company will not be removing any components or downgrading its Face ID setup, but, it will be making use of a refreshed VCSEL chip for image processing via Face ID, making it up to 40-50% smaller in comparison to older devices.

This change, when paired with the repositioning of the in-ear speaker, another rumour that has been making rounds, is believed to be the reason for a noticeably smaller notch than before, as has been leaked in recent months.

Furthermore, DigiTimes has noted that Apple's redesigned VCSEL chip will reduce overall costs; by reducing the size of the component by half, the company will also reduce the number of wafers required for production.

Another rumour regarding the display is the possibility of a 120Hz display, especially with the Pro models.

As of now, every device under the iPhone 12 series makes use of a panel that has a refresh rate of 60Hz, with the competition having moved on to 120Hz panels a while back. Now, it seems Apple will be catching up to its competitors.

The expected name for this display is ProMotion, much like the iPad. This feature will automatically adapt the refresh rate on the basis of the content that is currently being played, going down to a lower hertz rate and jumping up to 120Hz in a necessary use case.

Call of Duty Mobile Update to Bring Rambo, Die Hard Characters to the Game

Posted: 14 May 2021 07:03 AM PDT

Call of Duty

Call of Duty Mobile has been the talk of the town ever since its launch, having been the much-awaited game that was supposed to bring the fight to Player Unknown's Battle Ground (PUBG).

When PUBG was banned in India, the game catapulted to further fame, becoming one of the primary games on offer in India that provided a medium to experience realistic combat.

Now that it has been announced that Battlegrounds Mobile India, the revamped version of PUBG, is coming back, it seems Call of Duty Mobile is making further improvements and changes to make sure it remains on top of the charts.

This new event will bring enduring action movie heroes to the game, with the update coming next week, on May 20.

What Do We Know About The Update

Call of Duty's handle has announced that the game will receive new heroes from action movies that were aired during the 1980s within the game, though it is not clear what role these characters will play.

Amongst key heroes that are coming soon are the iconic John McClane from Die Hard, who is portrayed by Bruce Willis and John Rambo from the Rambo franchise, played by the legendary Sylvester Stallone. Certain other cult heroes might be added, but that is not yet clear.

To add to this, the Call of Duty Mobile announcement graphic hints at the characters being featured in Warzone, the PC or console battle royale and multiplayer game from Activision, as well as Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War.

With the latter of these games being focused on the 1980s, it will be fun to see whether these characters become part of the storyline, even if it is done for a short duration. In Warzone, the 80's action heroes event comes after the Verdansk game map was added, which is set in 1984.

Verdonk is based on the throw of simmering nuclear warfare tensions that are present around the world, especially during the 80s.

The update, which brings the event, will be quite important, especially considering that the game will start the event on May 20, with excited users given the chance to upgrade to the update from either the App Store on iOS or Android's Play Store.

Do note that it is not yet known as to how long these players will be added and whether or not they will bring new weapons to the game.

Excitel Broadband Never Witnessed Slump in Data Consumption Since March 2020

Posted: 14 May 2021 06:16 AM PDT

excitel-never-witnessed-slump-in-data-consumption
Excitel Broadband hasn't been witnessing "any major sustained surge in demand" even as multiple regions across India are currently under lockdown, says Vivek Raina, chief executive officer of Excitel Broadband. Raina told TelecomTalk that since the initial lockdown in March 2020, the company never witnessed a "slump in consumption." The CEO of Excitel said that the work from home has turned into a "regular style of working for the majority of the people whose jobs can be done in such a way." Further, Raina also said that the schools across India continued the online classes and that the people developed a "habit of entertaining themselves by playing online games or watching" content from the Over-the-Top platforms.

Excitel Prepared to Handle Surge in Data Usage

With India currently under the second wave of COVID-19, multiple regions across the country have imposed either a total lockdown or have placed several restrictions to control the rising COVID-19 cases. In areas where the regional governments have imposed a total lockdown, offices and educational institutions have been closed with the governments encouraging work from home and online classes.

"So ever since the peak consumption due to last year’s lockdown we never really saw a slump in consumption and there wasn't any major impact this time around," Raina told TelecomTalk in an email interview.

In April, ICICI Securities, a subsidiary of ICICI Bank, said that the increase in the adoption of fixed broadband services is "likely" to continue in the current financial year as well.

"Fixed broadband (FBB) is playing a critical role in enabling the work-from-home culture and online classes," ICICI Securities said in a report.

The firm said that the wired broadband space has witnessed a "strong adoption" in the past year with the operators in the segment witnessing a 19% increase in the user base.

"Earlier, data was used predominantly for communications (Whatsapp, Facebook), and entertainment (Youtube, gaming). However, in the wake of COVID, data utility has increased multifold – from virtual meetings, classrooms and various consultations, to online shopping, digital payments," ICICI Securities said in its report.

The CEO of Excitel said that the company is "prepared" to handle any surge in data usage in the days ahead.

"When last year we saw a sudden spike in the consumption, we set up practices and mechanisms in place to ensure that we have the technological expertise to handle such a dramatic surge," Raina said.

Crucially, Raina said that the company is "not just focusing on handling" the spike in data usage but also "trying to solve customer grievances and tech issues" during the current lockdown conditions.

Excitel Could Extend OTT Subscriptions to 100 Mbps, 200 Mbps Users

In late February, Excitel started bundling Zee5, Voot Select, Eros Now and ShemarooMe subscriptions with its 300 Mbps plans. Raina told TelecomTalk that the company "received an overwhelming response" from its users for its OTT subscription bundle.

"At the moment we have restricted the plan to 300 Mbps but we're further trying to analyse the data before extending it to 100 Mbps and 200 Mbps," Raina said.

ICICI Securities said that the telecom operators have become "critical in pushing digital entertainment ecosystem."

"Rise in fixed broadband is further helped by operators pushing bundled services with many apps built into pricing," ICICI Securities said in its report.

In comparison, Bharti Airtel, the second largest wired broadband provider in India offers at least one OTT subscription across its entire range of Xstream Fiber plans. Similarly, JioFiber, the Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) arm of Reliance Jio, offers OTT subscriptions on its plans priced Rs 999 and above. However, Raina highlights that Excitel offers the "most affordable" FTTH plans across India.

While Excitel is currently available across 29 cities in India, the company had earlier said that it is targeting to launch its services in 50 cities across the country.

"Even though our focus at these unprecedented times is to ensure that our customers keep on getting uninterrupted services and tech issues if any are resolved proactively, we still are gunning to cover the 50 cities that we set out to cover at the start of the year," Raina said.

Google’s Pixel 6 Renders Indicate a Bright Future

Posted: 14 May 2021 05:41 AM PDT

Google Pixel 6

Google, whilst launching its first-gen Pixel device hoped to showcase what it felt was the true version of Android, quite different from the stock android UI found on alternatives such as Nokia or Motorola.

With this, the company hoped to achieve massive success and, whilst the company has managed to capitalise on the former, for better or for worse, the latter seems to be a distant dream.

A key reason for this, for lack of a better word fall from existence, is the design or approach that the Pixel takes to the smartphone market. Rather than providing a flashy device with gaudy camera modules or branding, it chose to remain subtle, a bit too subtle according to some.

What it relied on for its success was its camera and, to the surprise of most, it managed to nail the optics, offering cameras that even on a bad day were able to match the iPhone and, at times beat it outright.

That being said, all of this never led to sales and, many feel that the cause for this is the vision that Google has for the product, relying on basic features and a groundbreaking camera. This is not enough in 2021 and, it seems the company has finally realised this after five years of disappointing sales numbers.

What leads to this statement is the leak that has surfaced via Jon Prosser, wherein the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are showcased and, if the products do turn out to look like this, then Google is up for a storm, for better or for worse.

Why Do The Pixel 6 Leaks Look Promising?

Google

The first key difference that is apparent the moment one takes a look at these leaks is the presence of two devices in contrast to one device since the Pixel 5 was the only 5 series device to launch in 2020.

First of all, the Pixel 6 appears to be smaller than the Pixel 6 Pro and features only two rear cameras, housed in a massive island to the back, which resembles the mountain found on the Mi 11 Ultra. The camera sensors are expected to be normal sensor and ultra-wide, but that is not yet confirmed.

The Pixel 6 Pro on the other hand seems much larger and adds a third sensor to the mix, most probably a telephoto sensor. The shape and size do indicate the presence of a regular telephoto sensor, rather than a superzoom sensor.

The key difference this time will be of the design, with a refreshed back panel which might look funky to some, but, is a breath of fresh air in contrast to the bland offerings. The camera module itself seems to feature a dash of colour, with the bottom part being a different colour.

Pixel

Do note that the renders were created by a third party based on the real-life images of the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, so the devices should resemble this base design if it does not end up being the exact copy of this render.

Towards the front, it seems the punch hole camera has been moved to the centre instead of being to the side like the Pixel 4A and 5. The bezels are also greatly reduced, to the point that they seem non-existent.

There is also a render of the Pixel Watch, but not a lot is known about the alleged smartwatch from Google that has been long-awaited by users. We will have to wait to know more about Google's version of what a smartwatch should be.

Posted: 13 May 2021 11:44 PM PDT

WhatsApp

The controversy related to WhatsApp's privacy policy has still not settled in India. The social media giant has said that it is scrapping the last date for the users in the country to accept the privacy policy. However, there will be certain functionalities that the users who don't accept the said policy will lose.

According to a PTI report, the MeitY Special Secretary and Financial Advisor Jyoti Arora said that the government is still looking at the problem carefully. Arora noted that Germany had banned WhatsApp's privacy policy to keep its people's data safe from the application's parent company Facebook.

India Might Ban WhatsApp's Privacy Policy as Well

Arora didn't mention anything of the sort that the Indian government will also go ahead with banning WhatsApp's privacy policy like Germany. However, we can't rule out the possibility that it might happen if the government deems it that way.

Right now India lacks a data policy like the one Europe has to keep its citizen's data secure. If the government decides to come up with a policy like that soon, it might ban the forceful implementation of the privacy policy of WhatsApp outright.

Arora said that the government is 'pro-actively’ looking at what the next best step would be to keep the data of millions of Indians safe.

WhatsApp recently said that it would not delete the accounts of the users on May 15 who don't accept the new privacy policy of the app. However, the company will limit the functionalities of the app for the users.

As per the statement of a spokesperson from WhatsApp, the users who fail to accept the new privacy policy will not be allowed to access their chat list. However, the users will still be able to receive calls (both video and voice), and also call back if they have a missed call.

The spokesperson further said that at some point in the future, the company might completely stop the users from accessing any features of WhatsApp if they don't accept the privacy policy of the company.

This is a bold move from the social media giant because if it were to lose business in the Indian market, it will be a huge loss for the company.

Vodafone Idea Behind Jio in Downloading Speeds in April

Posted: 13 May 2021 11:02 PM PDT

Reliace Jio

According to the assessment done by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio provided the fastest downloading speeds in the month of April 2021. The telco trumped Vodafone Idea (Vi) to offer the fastest speeds. However, Vodafone Idea offered the fastest upload speeds during the same time.

It is worth noting that Jio provided a faster network experience by a long margin to its users when compared with the speeds offered by the other telcos. The sector regulator releases reports for Vodafone and Idea separately even though the operators have merged.

As per a PTI report, TRAI said that Jio offered the fastest speeds during April, followed by Vodafone, Idea, and at last Bharti Airtel.

Downloading Speeds Offered by Vodafone Idea, Jio, and Airtel

At the top stood Reliance Jio offering a downloading speed of 20.1 Mbps, followed by Vodafone, which offered 7 Mbps speed, Idea at the third with 5.8 Mbps, and Airtel at the bottom with 5 Mbps. The report doesn't mention anything about the speeds offered by the state-run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).

Vodafone, however, was much ahead of the other operators when it came to providing the best uploading speeds. In upload speeds, Vodafone led the charts followed by Idea, Jio, and at last Airtel.

Vodafone users got upload speeds of 6.7 Mbps, and Idea users got upload speeds of 6.1 Mbps, not much of a difference. Reliance Jio at the third position offered 4.2 Mbps upload speed, and Airtel offered the slowest uploading speed of 5 Mbps.

Both the downloading and uploading speeds have a different role to play in a user's overall internet experience. It is worth noting that Vodafone Idea's network has been declared as the fastest by Ookla for consecutive quarters.

The results from TRAI reflect the advantage of the additional spectrum that Jio is getting. This would be good news for the users and the fans of the company since it wasn't expected that Jio would deliver the fastest downloading speeds to the users, at least until some time.

It is strange to see Bharti Airtel providing the least downloading and uploading speeds to the users despite boasting of a quality network.

Techniques to Fix a Broken Internet Connection

Posted: 13 May 2021 09:30 PM PDT

Broken Internet Connection

The internet has become a basic necessity in the modern world. More and more companies and individuals are getting access to the Internet to browse, share and store data on the Internet. Internet outages cause hindrance in providing services, communication and much more. Our dependency on the Internet has increased drastically over the last decade. We have seen global outages in multinational tech giants become headlines. Thus, the need for a seamless internet connection at all times has become crucial. But here is what you can do in case you are unable to find your internet network.

Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network

Many internet service providers provide multiple Wi-Fi frequencies under a single connection. These networks can differ in speed you can get out of them. Telecom operators in India are on the path of successfully building widespread 5G network infrastructures. Since 5G networks are starting to reach cities, internet service providers set up two frequencies in a single Wi-Fi connection. In such a connection, one of the frequencies would be 2.4 GHz, which would ensure a stable connection with a wider range and comparatively lesser speed. The other frequency would be 5GHz, connecting to which you would get 5G speed but with a very limited range. In case one of the frequency networks has some issue, you can try to connect to the other one to access the Internet.

Regular Speed Tests

Speed is the most important aspect of an internet connection. The download and upload speeds combined constitute the internet connection. Depending on your use case, you would require a higher download or upload speeds or both. Internet Service providers advertise speeds for different plans that are charged differently. More often than not, the advertised speed is not what we reap the benefits. In some situations, if your internet speed is too slow (2G/3G), your Internet might not work. Thus, regular speed checks help ensure a healthy internet connection. Speed Test by Ookla is a platform that provides accurate speed test results. It also displays both download and upload speeds in an easy-to-understand manner.

Self-Diagnostics by ISP apps

Many internet service providers have their separate apps to provide exceptional after-sale services to their customers. Some of those apps also have a self-diagnostic feature that facilitates the user to run checks on their internet connection. This feature checks for any known outages in your area, backend hardware issues and more. If the app is able to figure out the issue, it'll provide you with more information on the root cause. You can also use these apps to raise complaint tickets and contact customer support for your issue.

Diagnosis on Google Chrome Extension

Google is our saviour on the Internet. You can search for anything, and Google would have a solution for you. But, not many of us know that Google also has a Google Chrome Connectivity Diagnostics extension. This extension runs a number of checks on your laptop/desktop. Firstly, it checks if you are connected to an internet connection. If you are, it further checks for any other issues. Any issues that the extension pulls would be visible on the top of the window. You can also get details on the issues by clicking on them.

Moto G40 Fusion, a Better Deal Than Redmi Note 10S

Posted: 13 May 2021 08:00 PM PDT

Moto G40 Fusion

Xiaomi yesterday unveiled the Redmi Note 10S for the Indian market. In so many words, the device didn't launch with what was expected of it. If you are looking for a device in the same budget as the Redmi Note 10S, you can consider purchasing the Redmi Note 10 Pro or the Moto G40 Fusion.

Both the Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Moto G40 Fusion are a much better deal than the Redmi Note 10S. This is because of multiple reasons; let's take a look at all of them.

Redmi Note 10S Compared With Moto G40 Fusion

The first reason why the Redmi Note 10S is not an attractive deal is its display. Even though the Redmi Note 10S features a Super-AMOLED display, it cuts down on the refresh rate support to 60Hz. Compared to this, both the Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Moto G40 Fusion come with 120Hz refresh rate support.

Further, the chipset. The Snapdragon chipsets on the Redmi Note 10 Pro and the Moto G40 Fusion are a more attractive deal when compared with the MediaTek Helio G95 inside the Redmi Note 10S.

One great thing that the Redmi Note 10S has is MIUI 12.5 out of the box. If OS is very crucial to you, the Redmi Note 10S might be an ideal option over the Moto G40 Fusion. However, again, the Redmi Note 10 Pro supersedes the Redmi Note 10S since even if it has support for the latest MIUI.

Talking about the camera, the Redmi Note 10S features a quad-camera setup, while the Moto G40 Fusion features a triple camera setup. Both the devices have 64MP primary sensors at the rear. Even the Redmi Note 10 Pro comes with a quad-camera setup with a 64MP primary sensor at the back. So in terms of camera, there are very few differences between the devices.

At the end of the day, it will just come to the preferences of the user on which device's pictures he/she likes more. In the battery department as well, Moto G40 Fusion has a larger battery with a 6,000mAh capacity as compared to the 5,000mAh battery inside the Redmi Note 10S.

Redmi Note 10S and Moto G40 Fusion Price

Both the devices have two different variants in India. The Redmi Note 10S that launched today starts at Rs 14,999 for the 6GB+64GB variant. Its 6GB+128GB variant costs Rs 15,999. The Moto G40 Fusion starts at Rs 13,999 for its base 4GB+13,999 variant and costs Rs 15,999 for the 6GB+128GB variant.

Since the price of the top variants of the devices is the same, there is no way a rational user would not look at the Moto G40 Fusion as a better deal with a better display, almost equal camera, Snapdragon processor, and a larger battery.

BSNL and Vi’s Most Expensive Postpaid Plans Compared

Posted: 13 May 2021 06:35 PM PDT

BSNL and Vodafone Idea postpaid plan

Most of the postpaid users don't look beyond the plan they are already subscribed to for a long-time. This is because of the convenience of auto-pay service for some, and for some, it is that they are satisfied with the benefits of the plan. But to make better decisions, users need to be aware of the offerings in the market. Today, we are comparing the most expensive postpaid offerings from Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to determine which one is the better option.

Even though most of you already know that Vi's 4G networks give it an upper hand over the BSNL's service, it is still worth looking at the complete benefits of each plan and understand which is better.

BSNL Plan 1525 Postpaid Plan

There is an activation cost of Rs 100 with the BSNL Plan 1525 postpaid plan. This plan will cost Rs 1,525 per month. The plan comes with truly unlimited voice calling and truly unlimited data without any fair-usage-policy (FUP) restrictions. Further, users also get 100 SMS/day with the plan. BSNL doesn't provide any additional SIM cards for family connections. Since there is truly unlimited data offered with this plan, users won't have any need for the additional data add-on vouchers that the company provides for the postpaid plans.

One of the oddest things is that BSNL doesn't provide a single over-the-top (OTT) benefit with this plan when every other company is doing so.

Vodafone Idea REDX Plan

Vodafone Idea offers its REDX postpaid plan for Rs 1,099. This plan also offers users truly unlimited FUP data and unlimited voice calling. However, users get 100 SMS/month with the plan instead of 100 SMS/day with the BSNL's Plan 1525.

There are OTT benefits included with the plan, such as Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP, and Netflix for one year. Further, users also get free access to Vi Movies & TV app. The company also offers users free entry on domestic and international airport lounges. Users are also eligible to receive a Rs 2,999 worth international roaming pack for 7 days once a year.

Which Plan is Better?

It is evident that Vodafone Idea's plan is not only better when it comes to benefits, it is also cheaper. There are no OTT benefits at all with the BSNL's plan, while Vi's plan has a ton of them. Vi offers its users benefits when they are travelling internationally, while BSNL doesn't offer any such benefit.

At last, the network quality of Vi is multiple times better than that of BNSL's. If you are someone who can't tolerate 3G networks anymore, Vi's postpaid plan makes more sense. Even when considering other things, Vi's postpaid plan is ahead of BSNL's plan except in terms of the number of SMSes that the users get.
