Vi, better known as Vodafone Idea is one of India's leading telecom operator and has been one of the front runners for quite some time. Today, it announced its plan to offer special Covid-19 relief offers for around 60 million low-income customers in a bid to help them stay connected at all times during the 2nd wave of Covid.

This is the second time a telecom provider in India is offering such a plan, with Airtel has recently announced a similar plan to provide some relief to its low-income customers.

Vi To Offer Free Packs, New Combo Voucher

As part of its special relief offer, the company will be providing its Rs 49 pack for free to its 60 million+ low-income customers during the second wave of COVID-19. The pack offers Talktime of Rs 38 and 100MB of data with a validity of 28 days. With the plan, Vi hopes to enable its customers to stay connected during these tough times.

Furthermore, the company is also launching a new combo voucher, called RC79 which offers huge benefits to large bases of India's population. The special recharge comes with double Talktime of Rs 128 (Rs 64+64) and 200MB of data for 28 days, but do note that this is for a limited period of time.

For those of you unaware, as mentioned above, Airtel also announced that it would be offering its Rs 49 pack for free to its low-income customers who might be plagued by financial issues in these tough times. It will also offer the Rs 79 plan with double benefits, much like Vi India.

Much like Vi, Airtel is also offering Rs 38 of talktime and 100MB of data for 28 days, with the pack on offer for free. The Rs 79 plan comes with Rs 128 of talktime and 200MB of data for a span of 28 days. Once these benefits end, users will have to pay 60 paise per minute for calls and extra data would cost 50 paise per MB.

Reliance too is offering special benefits for the JioPhone, wherein users will get up to 10 minutes of talktime for free and a buy-one-get-one offer on the plan that the user buys, meaning that if you buy a certain plan, you will get the same plan for free which will be queued for use post the end of the first pack.

These moves come at a time of turmoil within the country, especially considering how vicious the second wave of COVID has been to the lower sections of society and, these plans will ensure that they remain connected to their loved ones despite these troubled times.

Amid the devastating second Wave of COVID-19, Cyclone Tauktae hit the western ghats of India. It has been reported that the cyclone has caused three deaths in Gujarat and six people were killed in Mumbai as the storm crossed the city on Monday. The devastating storm has also destroyed telecom infrastructures in several parts of the affected regions. In the latest statement S P Kochhar, DG, COAI announced that the team is working closely with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), Infrastructure Providers (IPs) and local state authorities to minimize the impact of Cyclone Tauktae on India's telecommunications network.

COAI and DoT Restoring Mobile Network

According to the announcement, the departments are taking every possible and necessary step to mitigate Cyclone Tauktae's impact on the people in affected states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa and Diu. It seems the COAI and DoT is working hard to resume all the services in the areas where the network connection is disrupted due to the cyclone. Further, the announcement also claims that the internet service is also getting revamped and will be live soon.

Moreover, COAI has also initiated intra circle roaming which will allow smartphone users to easily switch between TSPs, in case their native TSP is not in a working condition. The government is making use of priority Call Routing to coordinate and execute restoration work.

It seems that all TSPS and their OEM partners have increased the workforce on the ground to protect and restore the telecom infrastructure to ensure connectivity at this vital moment. Further, Kochhar added that TSPs has developed additional Cell of Wheels (CoW) to cater for the disruption in the mobile tower and to support impacted telecom sites. There is also an arrangement for diesel and battery backup in case the grid supply is not working.

Kochhar didn't reveal anything specific when the reinstallation work is going to be finished for all the regions. Looking at the regions we can expect that it might take some time but Kochhar ensures that the resolution of telecom infrastructure is on priority and will be resolved soon.

Apple’s Superb Headphones Will Not Support Apple Music Lossless Feature

Apple has recently announced two new features for Apple Music to enhance the audio experience of the subscriber. According to the company, the music streaming platform will start offering lossless audio and spatial audio with Dolby Atmos from early June. However, there is a piece of bad news for the AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max users. It has been reported that the best headphones from the brand will not support the lossless audio feature. Let's have a closer look at the latest news about the newly announced Apple Music features.

Lossless Audio Feature will Ditch Apple Headphones

According to the report, none of the Apple audio devices will support Lossless audio. Apple audio devices will include the AirPods, AirPods Max and the AirPods Pro. The report suggests that Apple's existing audio devices will not be able to receive the high quality of lossless audio feature, because the hardware available on the existing headphones are not compatible with the feature.

Apple claims that the Lossless audio feature encaptures the audio details as it is recorded at the time of production. It provides high quality of audio in bigger file size, usually, the normal audio file ranges from 16-bit 44.1 kHz playback to 24-bits 48 kHz playback. On the other hand, the Hi-res Lossless audio comes with 24at 192 kHz.

As per the company's official blog post, Apple Music offers a catalogue of over 75 million songs available in Lossless Audio. The company claims that it uses ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) to take care of every single bit of the original audio file. This means that the subscriber will be able to listen to the same music which was created by the artists in the recording studio.

Just to let you know Apple AirPods, AirPods Pro, and AirPods Max uses Bluetooth AAC codec when paired with an iPhone and it doesn't support ALAC format which makes it incompatible with the Lossless audio feature. The connectivity codec will not be able to transfer the full quality files to all three audio devices. It seems Apple needs to think about this and launch an audio device that supports this amazing feature.

Renowned chipset maker Qualcomm has been the most popular chipset maker when it comes to mobile devices, besting alternatives such as Mediatek and, in the overall market, competitors like Apple's silicon.

With the prospect of 5G and its global launch, more chipmakers have diverted their focus towards making 5G compatible chipsets that will allow the user to experience the 5th gen tech's capabilities and get work done faster.

It seems Qualcomm is doubling down when it comes to this attempt in order to beat Mediatek's Dimensity series of chips and, the latest of these ventures in the Snapdragon 778G 5G chip.

On Tuesday, the US-based chip maker announced that it would be expanding its 7-series portfolio with the launch of the new Snapdragon 778G 5G Mobile Platform chip based on the 6nm process.

Snapdragon 778G 5G: Specifications

The Snapdragon 778G 5G chip features Qualcomm's Kryo 670 CPU that enables approximately 40% higher performance and amazing power efficiency, which, when coupled with the Qualcomm Adreno 642L GPU capable of offering 40% faster graphics rending makes for a powerhouse of a chip.

Powered by the company's 6th generation AI engine with the Qualcomm Hexagon 770 processor, the chip claims to offer a combined AI performance of 12 TOPS and approximately 1,000 times improvement for the hands-off time when it comes to specific use cases. This is further improved via the 2nd Gen Qualcomm Sensing Hub that features an always-on, low-power AI processor.

To add to this, the chip packs select Snapdragon Elite Gaming features such as Variable Rate Shading or VRS for faster and efficient gameplay as well as Qualcomm's Game Quick Touch that can boost overall response rates by up to 20%. The chip can support an FHD+ display with a maximum refresh rate of 144Hz.

The Qualcomm Spectra 570L Triple ISP can support up to a 192MP single camera or a 36+22MP dual-cam setup or up to 22MP triple cameras.

When it comes to connectivity, the Snapdragon 778G 5G chip makes use of the Snapdragon X53 5G Modem-RF system that can provide peak download speeds of 3.3 Gbps. The modem also supports key bands including mmWave and Sub-6 in both FDD and TDD frequencies, NSA and SA modems as well as DSS or Dynamic Spectrum Sharing.

It also makes use of Qualcomm's FastConnect 6700 Connectivity System that is supposedly capable of delivering multi-gigabit class Wi-Fi 6 speeds, maxed at 2.9 Gbps. Certain other features that are present on the chip include Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS/GLONASS/NAVIC/QZSS, USB 3.1, Qualcomm 3D Sonic or Sonic Max fingerprint sensors, QC 5, aptX Adaptive Audio amongst others.

Broadband Internet Disconnections – Reasons and Resolutions

Posted: 17 May 2021 09:30 PM PDT

Broadband internet

Internet has become an integral part of our daily lives. We use the internet not just for entertainment but also for work and getting our daily chores done like ordering groceries. Our dependency on the internet has reached levels where even a short span of disconnection becomes infuriating. We could be in the middle of a zoom meeting or making payments online, a smooth and stable internet at all times is a must.

However, frequent disconnections are something that is a part and parcel of a broadband internet connection. Although there could be a number of reasons for a network disconnection, the fix for those is usually easy.

Limitations in Download and Upload Speeds

Slow speed is one of the most common reasons for frequent broadband internet disconnection. If the speed of your internet connection is slow your device would have trouble picking up a stable connection. Multiple devices connected to the same broadband connection reduce the speed considerably. So, check your internet speed via speed testing websites or apps and upgrade your data packs for higher speeds.

Wi-Fi Router being used is Obsolete

A Wi-Fi router is responsible for being the bridge between your ISP providing internet and your device being able to access it. With newer broadband connections coming into the market, an old and obsolete Wi-Fi router would not be compatible to support such connections. Thus, if you upgrading your broadband data pack and have a very old Wi-Fi device, consider upgrading that too.

Any Issues on the ISP's side

As we mentioned above an ISP or Internet Service Provider, is an establishment that provides you access to the internet via various mediums like fibre cables and satellite. If there are frequent planned or unplanned outages on your ISP's side, you'll face disconnections. Disconnections can also be due to maintenance work or any wear and tear of the cables. Although there is no way for you to fix it, keep chasing your ISP to fix these issues in a timely manner.

Giving Your Modem Some Rest

We all have faced the warming of our electronic devices if we use them extensively for long durations. Similarly, if your Wi-Fi modem is working 24×7, it can face heating issues which may slow down its functioning which directly translates to slow speeds for you. In such cases, just unplug your modem for a while and let it cool. Plug it back up after some time and it shall restore its functions and starting delivering high speeds to your devices.

Viruses Can Harm Your Broadband Internet Connection

There are many kinds and types of viruses that can be downloaded from the internet unknowingly. Such viruses are attached to apps or files that are downloaded from unverified and unsecured sources. These viruses can significantly drop your internet speed causing frequent disconnection of your broadband internet connections. The way to solve this issue is easy. Download antivirus software on your devices that would scan for all the data that is being downloaded and sites being browsed. These antivirus softwares can detect and kill any existing viruses as well. This will help you restore your speed and ensure a smooth and stable broadband internet connection.

Leased Line Broadband Connections Are Very Useful

Posted: 17 May 2021 08:00 PM PDT

Leased broadband

Leased line broadband connections are very useful to some people. But mostly, it is businesses or private organisations that opt for leased line connections because they are much expensive than a normal broadband connection.

There are multiple reasons why leased line broadband connections are more useful and secure than traditional broadband connections. This is why these kind of connections are very expensive as well.

Further, not all operators might be capable of providing leased line broadband connections. Let's take a look at why leased line broadband connections are very useful.

Advantages of Leased Line Broadband Connections

One of the biggest advantages of leased line broadband connections is that they allow users to get the kind of speed they want. Whether it is 1 Gbps, 500 Mbps, or 200 Mbps speed, leased line broadband connections can provide it all to the customers. But these are just examples; leased line connections can provide up to 10 Gbps speed as well.

Leased line connections come with SLA (Service Level Agreement), wherein it is mentioned that the service providers can monitor the performance of the connection, meaning if there is any failure in the connection, the operator will have to compensate for it. However, this is not the case with traditional broadband connections.

Symmetrical speed is one benefit that both the traditional fibre as well as leased line broadband connection users enjoy. Symmetrical speeds mean the same download and upload speeds. Users can also make VoIP calls.

One of the biggest advantages of a leased line broadband connection, however, is the privacy that is offered to the users. Privacy and security are very important to businesses since all of their important data and information is worth a lot of money.

Further, leased line connections get amazing backup support from the operators since they are considered as 'premium clientele'. If you are running an office or have a business of your own, you can consider getting the leased line broadband connection for your data needs. There are many more reasons why a leased line connection is better than a traditional internet connection.

But there is no need for a normal consumer to go for a leased broadband internet connection since it is not only expensive but also not of any use for him/her.

Jio, Airtel Might Help Vodafone Idea With Tariff Hikes

Posted: 17 May 2021 06:30 PM PDT

Jio tariff hikes

Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been in a tough position financially for a long-time now. The third-largest telecom operator of the country is waiting for its rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel to increase tariffs so that it can do so as well. Until now, the analysts have believed that the top two operators of the country won't push for tariff hikes, and because of this, Vi will also have to delay its move.

But Jio and Airtel might surprise the market and go for tariff hikes earlier than expected. If you are wondering why that is, take a look at the Q4 results of both the telcos. While there were not a lot of issues in regards to the overall revenues, both the operators saw their average revenue per user (ARPU) falling quite significantly.

Airtel, Jio Might Introduce Tariff Hikes to Increase ARPU

Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio might just go for tariff hikes sooner than expected to improve their falling ARPU situation. Note that this is an assumption and is not a statement coming from the companies themselves.

Airtel's ARPU fell to Rs 145 in the last quarter as compared to Rs 166 in the previous quarter. At the same time, Reliance Jio's ARPU fell from Rs 151 in the third quarter to Rs 138.2 in the last quarter of FY21.

Both the telcos are facing a dip in ARPU because of several factors, out of which one of the prominent ones is the removal of Interconnect Usage Charges (IUC) from January 1, 2021.

Vodafone Idea Will Be Happy if Airtel, Jio Go for Tariff Hikes

Vi will be the happiest if the other two telcos go for tariff hikes sooner than expected. We don't expect Jio's ARPU to boost significantly, given the telco is expected to add a ton of low-ARPU customers (JioPhone users).

Vi needs to improve its ARPU desperately to see some respite in its financials. The telco has been unable to raise funds because of a weak reputation in the market. However, things seem to be going Vi's way since the telco not only added customers recently but is also improving its 4G network capacity throughout India.

Jio and Airtel didn't go for tariff hikes until now to not upset their subscriber addition rate. If the telcos increase tariffs, it would further create problems for them to attract legacy network users. The tariff hikes just might be back on the cards of the telecom operators. The companies are yet to make any official statement on the matter, but we expect the tariff hikes to come by the September quarter.

It is worth noting that Airtel has already said that while it would increase tariffs, it wouldn't be the first operator to do so.
