Android 12 Will Make Using Third Party App Stores Much Easier, Here’s How

Posted: 20 May 2021 08:38 AM PDT

Android 12 app stores
The antitrust lawsuit brewing between Epic Games and Apple over the company’s control of the App Store, which is native to iOS and the app ecosystem within it, is coming to a close; Google has come out and explained its plans to provide better support for third-party app stores with Android 12, which was unveiled as part of the company’s Google I/O event.

In an earlier instance in 2020, Google had responded to claims that were made by Epic Games over how the Play Store and iOS caused issues for third-party app stores by making the point that its upcoming version of Android would contain better support for app stores that do not ship natively with a device, one of the prime examples being the Epic Games Store.

What Is Google Going To Do?

The company has now explained how it intends to implement better support within its developer documentation, first spotted by XDA. In a bid to support third-party stores, Android 12 has made changes to the  REQUEST_INSTALL_PACKAGES permission, which is used by all kinds of apps that wish to install another Android Application Package (APK) such as a file manager or a browser.

With the changes that will be made to the permission, app stores will be able to install applications just like the Play Store. As of today, users who download applications from third-party stores must first allow the store to "request the installation of packages", followed by manual confirmation of the installation of each package. This is meant as a security measure to prevent malicious stores from installing applications without the knowledge of the user.

With Android 12, third party apps will be able to make use of a new method dubbed setRequireUserAction, which will allow them to automatically install desired applications.

Do note that for proper usage, Google has added some security measures. Any app store that wishes to make use of this method will need Android 10 or higher, followed by request for the new UPDATE_PACKAGES_WITHOUT_USER_ACTION permission.

Additionally, they will be able to automatically update themselves or install updates to a specific package that was originally installed. It is easy to see how this system could be misused, especially considering how APK Pure infected devices running older versions of Android with trojans.

Overall, this addition seems to be Google’s attempt to try and make amends with Epic Games, but it still remains to be seen how these stores will work with the next version of Android, with initial impressions hinting at an easier way of installing third-party apps.

PhonePe, Paytm and Google Pay Will Become Interoperable Soon

Posted: 20 May 2021 07:40 AM PDT

PhonePe

Mobile wallets have brought a new revolution to India, be it Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay or Mobikwik; all of them have been key in reducing the dependency on physical cash, reducing the need to carry a lot of cash.

It seems that the ability to transfer cash to one’s digital wallet is about to become much easier after an announcement from the RBI. As per the Reserve Bank of India or RBI, all mobile wallets, be it Google’s offering or Paytm, will have to allow interoperability starting FY23 or April 1, 2022.

This announcement came in an order from the RBI, which aims to simplify digital banking in India, which has become much better over the course of the last couple of years, but it is still out of reach of the overall population.

The new rule is applicable to all licensed prepaid payment instruments or PPIs in the country starting April 2022, with the decision having been taken after the Monetary Policy Committee meeting in April of 2021.

What Is Interoperability

When it comes to digital wallets, interoperability refers to the ability to let valid users who possess verified KYCs to send and receive money from different mobile wallets. What this basically means is that you will now be able to send your money from your Paytm wallet to your Mobikwik wallet or vice versa.

As per the RBI, digital wallets can facilitate this interoperability via UPI or Unified Payments Interface. It also added that card-based PPIs could attain interoperability via card network interoperability. The only exception is PPI for Mass Transmit Systems (PPI-MTS), with RBI stating that GIFT PPI issuers have the option to offer interoperability if they wish.

A statement from the circular released by RBI states that any PPI issuer offering this specific facility shall be required to put in place proper customer redressal mechanisms. Complaints in relation to this shall fall under the ambit of the respective ombudsman schemes as well as for instructions on limiting the liability of customers.

Furthermore, RBI has also stated that customers will be able to use their mobile wallets to withdraw, limited to Rs 2,000. Wallet limits have also been expanded from Rs 1 lakh to 2 lakh. It also noted that PPI users should be required to put in place suitable cooling periods for cash withdrawal upon opening PPIs or re-loading of funds into PPIs to mitigate the risk of fraudulent use.

Airtel CEO Suggest Using Safe Pay to Avoid Cyber Crime and Frauds

Posted: 20 May 2021 06:35 AM PDT

Airtel CEO Safe Pay
Bharti Airtel India's biggest telecom operator has shared a letter warning more than 321 million subscribers against the rising cases of cyber frauds. According to Gopal Vittal, the CEO of Airtel India, customers are guided to install apps that are capable of tracking all accounts on their smartphone. Gopal also warned customers against digital payment frauds where subscriber's one-time passwords and UPI details are accessed to make fraud payments. We are in an era where technology is evolving, but it seems that the number of cybercrimes is also increasing. Let's have a closer look at the new letter released by Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal.

Bharti Airtel Warning for Cyber Crimes

Currently, India is going through the second wave of devastating COVID-19 and amid all this, the number of cybercrime cases has also seen a peak. According to the company, there is a massive surge in online transactions during the second wave of the pandemic. The letter suggests that the telco is working hard relentlessly and coming out with safety features to ensure customers safety.

Vittal also highlighted the modus operandi being adopted by fraudsters. He also mentioned the ongoing cyber frauds related to digital payments. According to Vittal, there has been a massive growth in online transactions and a parallel growth in the cases of cyber fraud. The letter is released to draw some attention to the kind of frauds that users might likely face. Further, he added that the telecom operator is working on a feature “that is geared towards conducting secure online transactions “without the fear of being duped by a fraudster”.

Also Read: Bharti Airtel Giving Rs 49 Pack for Free and Doubling Benefits With Rs 79 Plan

Vittal also confirmed that Airtel does not sell VIP numbers on the phone and will never ask you to download any third-party apps. If someone is calling you and telling you to download any app then immediately call 121 and inform. Subscriber should have to be cautious against fraud callers pretending to be Airtel employees, asking users to download the app for incomplete KYC form.

Fraudsters ask users to install the ”Airtel Quick Support” app from the Google Play Store to allow them to help. But the fact is that there is no such app on the play store, when the customer tries to install it, they are redirected to TeamViewer Quick Support App.

This app will allow users to take access to the smartphone remotely and accounts associated with the device. Airtel customers are also receiving calls and text from the fraudsters offering VIP numbers. To get the number the users are asked to make a prepayment as a token/booking amount after receiving the amount the fraudster blocks all contacts with the person.

According to the CEO, Airtel has the safest way of making payments call Safe Pay, it comes with an additional layer of security for every transaction. Before making the payment the Airtel network intelligence throws up a message asking you to confirm the transaction to the person who is trying to pull the fraud. So if you activate this feature then you are less vulnerable to fraudsters.

Apple’s App Store Is Receiving New Features for iPadOS

Posted: 20 May 2021 05:29 AM PDT

Apple App Store

Apple, the Cupertino based tech giant, is quite popular for bringing the latest features and offering the best that it has to offer, be it in terms of its hardware devices or software. The applications from the company are easy to use and quite feature-rich. It seems Apple is ready to add more features to one of its key applications, the App Store.

The App Store has been Apple’s competitor to Google’s Play Store, allowing users to download the applications of their choice using the App Store just like Google.

Apple on Thursday started rolling out its latest version for the App Store on a global scale, with the 5.12 version bringing with it a revamped interface for the iPad. The new app store design makes use of the sidebars that were introduced with iPad OS 14, which until now were not in use. Apart from this change, the update also brings with it key updates to the Apple sessions and iPad shopping experience.

What’s New With The Apple Store Update

The update, which was first spotted by 9To5Mac, brings with it a major change in terms of the design, with the left sidebar being introduced for the first time in the App Store with the option to either hide or show the same.

The sidebar works quite as it does in other iPad OS 14 applications such as the Photos app or the Apple Music application, with the sidebar including a dedicated space for recent orders that allows users to quickly access all of their orders on the App Store.

To add to this, the sidebar also includes the categories which were earlier showcased on the grid to provide users ease of use when it comes to searching and choosing from the categories that are on offer.

Apple has also added the ability for users to add a keyboard or Apple Pencil seamlessly when shopping for an iPad, with the option appearing inside the configuration tool when the user is selecting the size or storage capacity of the iPad of choice, much like it is done on the web version. There is also a new virtual Today at Apple sessions, which aims to aid users to learn basic ways to remain productive.

Fret not if you were worrying about when this new update would be released since the new version of the App Store is currently on offer for everyone around the world.

Nokia to Offer 5G Solutions for the Largest Telecom Network of Sweden

Posted: 20 May 2021 05:11 AM PDT

Nokia 5G

Nokia, a Finnish telecom vendor, has been chosen by Net4Mobility to help with the expansion of the company's 5G networks across Sweden. It is a five-year deal between the companies in which Nokia will bring its 5G solutions to the table to help Net4Mobility in rolling out commercial 5G services to significant parts of Sweden.

For the unaware, Net4Mobility is a joint venture between Telenor and Tele2. According to a statement from Tommi Uitto, president of Mobile Networks at Nokia, the company is very happy to become a key supplier of 5G equipment and solutions to the Tele2 and Telenor's joint-venture. Uitto said that Nokia would provide the telecom operators with the best possible 5G solutions to help them offer better coverage to the users.

Nokia to Leverage Products AirScale Portfolio for 5G

Nokia has developed a comprehensive AirScale 5G portfolio that will help Net4Mobility in delivering low-latency, ultra-high speeds, and very secure 5G networks. Nokia is all in on the deal and will help with professional services, including network optimisation and integration services, along with technical support for maintenance and sudden issues.

Nokia will use the AirScale massive MIMO Adaptive Antenna Solutions, AirScale Base Stations solutions, RAN solutions and more state-of-the-art technology to help Net4Mobility deliver the best possible 5G networks to the users.

Nokia will further help the telco in improving its legacy 4G networks. Net4Mobility has plans to deliver 5G coverage to entire Sweden by the end of 2023. It is an ambitious target from the telecom operator but one which will certainly require the help of Nokia.

The telco has already bagged airwaves in the 3.5 GHz band, so it won't face too many issues with providing 5G networks given it gets quality help from Nokia. The company's 4G network already covers 99.9% of the population of Sweden. There's no reason why Net4Mobility can't do the same with its 5G network as well.

A thing worth noting here is that this is not the first time that Nokia is working with Telenor and Tele2. The Finnish vendor has been selected before as well for helping the operators with their cloud network.

Ericsson, Volvo Test Cross-Border 5G Network Efficiency

Posted: 20 May 2021 04:30 AM PDT

Ericsson 5G

Ericsson keeps on testing the efficiency of its 5G networks and how it performs under different circumstances. Recently, the European telecom vendor partnered with the premium car maker Volvo to test how the 5G networks perform in cross border vehicular handover. The purpose of this test was to check how efficient the 5G networks are in delivering real-time information to the vehicles for enabling a seamless driving experience when crossing the borders between different nations.

The test was conducted at the AstaZero test track located in Sweden. This test was a small part of the 5GCroCo project. The aim of this project is to prepare for a large-scale connected car trial across the 5G corridors of Merzig in Germany, Metz in France, and Luxembourg.

5G Networks Enhanced Seamless Service Continuity Across Borders

The results of the AstaZero tracks tests have shown that 5G networks are capable of providing seamless service continuity to vehicles when they cross the border. This ensures that the vehicles get real-time information from the maps to keep the driving experience as smooth as possible.

For this trial, Volvo used two cars with an HD map of the route, and Ericsson deployed a 5G mobile radio network for helping the cars communicate. The 5G network allowed the cars to get real-time information on the HD maps so that a clear pathway could be determined.

When the HD maps aren't updating and have outdated information, the cars can send the information to the Mobile Edge Cloud, which enables cars at the back to receive updates of the route from the cloud.

The Volvo cars had an HD map application that could identify and measure the boundaries of the turning and straight lanes so that the cars could recognise the situations better.

This is a big step in the future of bringing autonomous and connected cars to the world. 5G networks will play a pivotal role in delivering real-time data to the other cars and drivers in the same route. This will potentially result in a smoother driving experience for everyone on the road and also help in avoiding accidents because of outdated information.

Apple Announces Range of Accessibility Features for All Kinds of Users

Posted: 20 May 2021 01:10 AM PDT

Apple

Apple on Thursday announced a whole range of accessibility features that have been designed keeping in mind people who have mobility, cognitive, hearing or vision-related limitations. These features will be pushed via software updates later this year.

One of the most interesting features for the Apple Watch that has been announced is one that allows people with limb related limitations to navigate the device's interface by making use of AssistiveTouch. Users who own iPads or iPhones will also get similar features. Apple has also introduced a new language interpreter service under the name of SignTime which will allow users to communicate with either AppleCare or retail care.

What are Apple's Latest Accessibility Features

AssistiveTouch, one of the updated additions from Apple will allow Apple Watch users to navigate a cursor on the display via a series of hand gestures that will include pinches or clenches. Apple states that this will be made possible by the accelerometer and gyroscope present onboard the Apple Watch along with machine learning and the heart rate sensor.

Gesture controls via AssistiveTouch will also allow users with limb differences to easily answer calls, control an on-screen pointer, access the control centre and notification centre, all on the Apple Watch without any physical inputs. The models that will get these features are yet to be revealed.

Furthermore, iPadOS will also be bringing support for third-party eye-tracking software and devices to allow users to control their iPad without any physical input, instead, they will use their device with their eyes. Apple has also stated that it is updating its preloaded screen reader, VoiceOver to let people explore more details in their images.

People who get distracted by sounds have also been considered, with Apple announcing background sounds such as balanced, dark noise and bright that will continue to play in the background so that the user is not distracted by some unwanted noise or external sound, allowing them to stay focused, calm and at ease.

For mute users, Apple is bringing mouth sounds such as click, ee or pop to replace physical keys and buttons so that non-speaking users with limited mobility can use their devices. There will also be new memoji customisations to represent users with oxygen tubes, cochlear implants or a soft helmet.

The SignTime feature will be available in the US, UK and France starting May 20, with plans of expansion in the future, but the details for the same are yet to be revealed.

Redmi Note 10

Xiaomi has released its Note 10 series in India in March of this year. This was the latest addition to the Note series for the smartphone manufacturer. With other smartphone manufacturers building and releasing 5G compatible phones in the market, a 5G variant of the Redmi Note 10 series was well anticipated.

Xiaomi took to its Weibo handle today to release an official poster of the upcoming Redmi Note 10 5G series. The poster was merely a design tease of their new phone with the details of its launch date and time. According to the poster The Redmi Note 10 5G series is said to launch on May 26th at 2:00 PM (local time) in China.

More on the Redmi Note 10 5G series

This model number was certified by China's TENAA authority back in the month of March.

The M2103K19C model handset, which could very likely be the Vanilla Note 5G model by the looks of it, has a 6.5inch IPS LCD FHD+ display. It sports an 8MP front camera and a 48MP triple rear camera setup. A 2.2 GHz octa-core processor will power the smartphone along with 4GB/ 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The company said that it is still in the 'process of finalising the launch date'. Sure, there are multiple things that are considered before launching a new product; however, we feel that the expected June launch might be too optimistic.

Battlegrounds Mobile India Updates Will be Posted on Website and Social Networks

Battlegrounds

Krafton said that it would keep posting new updates about the game on its official website and social networks to keep the users informed. The company has already started pre-registrations and is also offering exclusive rewards to the people who pre-register right now.

However, the pre-registrations are only available for people who use Android devices. For iOS users, the game is still in the development stages, and the company will announce something very soon for them as well.

If you want to pre-register for the game, you can click here. The Battlegrounds Mobile India will be very similar to PUBG Mobile. There will be a few alterations to make the game more apt for the Indians.

One of the biggest differences between the PUBG Mobile and the Battlegrounds Mobile India will be that of the privacy offered to the users. While PUBG Mobile collected information that was stored out of the bounds of India, the Battlegrounds Mobile India will store all the information within the country and follow the guidelines given by the government.

Since it will be an India exclusive game, its in-game events will be specially designed that won't be offered to users outside India. Further, the game is expected to retain altered versions of the Erangel, Sanhok, and Miramar maps.

More information about the game will be out soon. According to IGN India, the game might launch on June 18, 2021. But the company hasn't confirmed anything like that, so it is still a speculation.

Wi-Fi Router and Modem: All the Differences Between the Two

Posted: 19 May 2021 09:30 PM PDT

Wi-Fi router vs Modem

Modem and Routers are two terms that are synonymously used with an internet connection. An internet connection is usually provided through either a Wi-Fi Router or Modem. This has created confusion amongst customers where these two terms are used interchangeably. However, a router and a modem provide different functions and thus are two distinct devices.

What is a Wi-Fi Router, and What Does It Do?

A Wi-Fi router is a hardware device that your Internet Service Provider uses to connect to their cable or xDSL internet network. It combines the functions of a wireless access point and a router. To understand what a Wi-Fi router does, we must first understand that when we connect a device to the Wi-Fi, we are actually connecting it to the Wi-Fi Router. Your router then creates a network of all the devices connected to it in your home. A basic function of a Wi-Fi router is to connect multiple networks and to route network traffic between these networks.

A Wi-Fi Router is what enables you to connect multiple devices into one single internet connection. It also allows these devices to communicate with each other. This means that it enables data transfer between devices that are connected to a particular Wi-Fi router. This interconnectivity of devices under one Wi-Fi Router helps it identify what traffic is going to which device through the network. Wi-Fi Router is a suitable hardware application for homes with multiple devices which can seamlessly connect to the router, and it will distribute the internet connection amongst devices. Your Wi-Fi Router can also act as a line of defence and protect you from malicious malware.

What is a Modem, and What does it do?

On the other hand, a Modem functions by connecting your local network to an internet connection that comes from your Internet Service Provider. A standard modem provides a wired style of internet output compared to a Wi-Fi Router. A modem can connect to any kind of internet structure like cables or fiber connection. It then provides a standard Ethernet cable output that needs to be plugged into your computer or laptops to access the internet. Since a modem provides a wired internet connection, it cannot be used to access the internet on mobile phones. To make your connection wireless, you can connect your modem to a router.

The Real Difference Between Wi-Fi Router and Modem

An internet connection cannot be created without the use of either a Wi-Fi Router or a Modem. Where on one hand, Modems make signals readable by modulating and demodulating data from a digital format. It connects a device to the internet using a wired medium like an Ethernet cable.

On the other hand, a router can determine the best path and direct data packs to the correct nodes. It can connect multiple devices to one single internet connection. It can also assist in sharing data between devices connected to one single connection using a Wi-Fi network.

A Wi-Fi modem is a hybrid hardware solution that can be used to create a wireless network. A Wi-Fi modem combines the functions of a modem and a router. It translates internet data packets via modem and sends them wirelessly to devices that can be connected to it through Wi-Fi. Although the technology used in such a device, it is easy to use and is compact in nature. However, it is important to note that in such an implementation, if even if one part of the solution breaks, the whole device will stop working.

Apple’s Silicon Will Be Taking a Giant Leap Forward

Apple Silicon

The Cupertino based tech giant Apple is widely regarded as one of the most successful tech companies of all time, bringing to its users groundbreaking devices like the Mac and the iPhone, all of which have gone on to become either segment leaders or major competitors.

To do this, Apple has sometimes made use of localised parts to ensure that it has total control over key aspects of a device, one of the prime examples being that of the silicon used in the iPhone, which has always been leaps and bounds ahead of what the competition has had to offer.

In 2020, the company decided to ditch Intel and its processors, which were in use for the company's MacBook and iMac and, instead of looking for an alternative, Apple decided to take a gamble with its own silicon that was later dubbed the M1 chip.

Fast forward to 2021, the MacBook Air and Pro, which run the M1 chip, are selling like hotcakes, with users reporting much better performance in comparison to the older models and, more recently, the famed iMac and iPad Pro making use of the same for their computing needs.

Within a span of a year or so, Apple has seen the fruits of its labour and, it seems that it is getting ready to launch a 40-core Apple Silicon chip to power the likes of the iMac Pro with a new Mac Mini in tow as well. So, is Apple getting ready to take things to the next level? Yes, here's why we think so.

Apple M1: What Made It Special

Apple

Before one discusses the future, they must delve into the past, and that is what we will do first. At the time of launch, Apple touted the M1 chip to be the world's fastest CPU core in low-power silicon with the world's fastest integrated graphics, the world's best CPU performer on a per watt basis and much more.

The cores in use for the M1 chip are quite efficient in terms of regular tasks and browsing, with the 8 cores on offer combining to offer the world's best CPU performance on a per watt basis. These high-cores were designed to offer the best performance at the optimum efficiency levels.

The chip is based on a 5nm basis, much like the A14 Bionic chip that was featured on the last-gen iPhones and iPad. This decision allowed for better efficiency and the best battery life possible without sacrificing overall performance. The M1 chip also offered the ability to play games, a prospect that would, on earlier occasions, cause Apple users a headache due to the whirring that would occur from the Intel chips.

Now, with all of this, one would be pretty happy, wouldn't they? Well, yes, at least most people are. Users who have purchased the M1 Macs have been pretty happy with what they were getting, especially if they were coming from older MacBooks or iMacs.

Apple's Next Big Move?

Apple M1

Despite all these features being in favour of the company, by adding this chip to the iPad Pro, Apple indirectly hinted at a probable successor to the M1, this time offering actual Pro-level performance.

If recent reports are to be believed, the company is working on a 40-core chip that will be an Apple silicon chip meaning that devices like the iMac Pro, which are due to get a refresh, will be receiving some serious firepower. The MacBook Pro 16-inch is expected to get either an updated M1 chip or the same 40-core CPU, which will be worthy of the Pro moniker.

Considering the strides that have already been observed over Intel, it will be quite interesting to see what Apple will do with the successor of the M1 chip and what the future of the Apple silicon holds.

Vodafone Idea Crushing Jio and Airtel With This 84 Days Offering

Posted: 19 May 2021 06:30 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea

There is no doubt that Vodafone Idea's prepaid offerings are better than what any other telco offers. The company has introduced some very exciting and amazing offers for its users at regular intervals, which have helped it add new subscribers in the month of February 2021. Most of the prepaid users who look for a medium-term plan opt for the 84 days offering because of the value for money proposition offered by the telcos. Today, we will look at one such prepaid plan from Vodafone Idea (Vi) that's crushing the 84 days offerings from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel.

Vodafone Idea Prepaid Plan for 84 Days to Look Out For

Vodafone Idea (Vi) offers users multiple plans with a validity of 84 days. However, the one that we are talking about comes for Rs 801. This plan from the telco is an industry-unique offering from Vi that comes with benefits that subscribers of other telcos can only dream of.

The Rs 801 plan from Vi was introduced a few months back. The plan was brought in as an offering to provide users with a high-end over-the-top (OTT) subscription benefit. With the Rs 801 plan from Vi, users get 3GB of daily data and a bonus of 48GB extra. So the total data that users get with the plan is 300GB.

There is no other telecom operator in the country with a high-quality 4G network that offers a prepaid plan for 84 days with 300GB of data to the users. Further, this plan comes with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day benefit for the entire 84 days.

The OTT benefit offered with the plan is Disney+ Hotstar VIP for one year. The standalone subscription to this platform will cost Rs 399 per year. Users also get the 'Binge All Night' and the 'Weekend Data Rollover' offer from the company, along with an additional OTT benefit of Vi Movies & TV.

For the unaware, the 'Binge All Night' enables users to consume as much data as they want between 12 AM and 6 AM every day. It doesn't affect the fair-usage-policy (FUP) data that the user gets with the plan. The 'Weekend Data Rollover' offer, on the other hand, allows users to collect all their unused data from the weekdays and use it on the weekends to satisfy their entertainment needs at home.

In contrast, the 3GB daily data plan from Jio for 84 days costs Rs 999, and Airtel doesn't even offer such a plan. Jio's plan doesn't come with any bonus data or OTT benefits or offers such as 'Binge All Night' or 'Weekend Data Rollover'.

Vi's 3GB daily data plan for 84 days isn't only cheaper than Jio's plan but offers a ton of additional benefits. So clearly, Vi is crushing the other telcos when it comes to offering the best 84 days prepaid plan.
