| Jio Platforms and Qualcomm Bring India a Step Closer to 5G Posted: 02 Jun 2021 09:14 AM PDT ![]()
Reliance Industries Limited or RIL stated on Wednesday that its Jio Platforms has decided to collaborate with US-based chipmaker Qualcomm technologies in order to localise the manufacturing of critical 5G equipment in India. In case you forgot, both companies had previously partnered with each other in order to develop an open and interoperable interface compliant architecture-based 5G solutions complete with a virtualized RAN. Both companies had, in 2020 achieved over a 1 Gbps milestone on the Jio 5GNR solution by making use of the chipmaker’s 5G RAN Platforms. The US-based chipmaker Qualcomm had also invested $97 million in Jio Platforms in 2020 to strengthen the overall partnership. What Do We Know About This Collaboration?Oddly, Qualcomm has also joined hands with Jio’s nemesis Bharti Airtel for the telco’s 5G rollout in the country. As part of the partnership, the telco will utilise the chipmaker’s 5G RAN platforms to roll out virtualised and open-RAN 5G networks in India. Jio has already worked on and developed an end-to-end 5G stack consisting of a 5G radio and core network solutions. Furthermore, as per ET Telecom, RIL also revealed that the telco has already completed the testing of its 5G radio and core solution, which will now allow for a self-sufficient and cost-effective rollout. As of now, Reliance Jio is preparing for 5G field trials after having received trial spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications or DoT. The telco will be testing its own 5G technology but, it will also be working with its 4G partner Samsung alongside the likes of Ericsson and Nokia. As part of its RIL annual report, the company stated that India was at the forefront of the global digital revolution. Jio is also accelerating the rollout of digital platforms and indigenously developed next-generation 5G stack, making it affordable and available everywhere. It also added that the telecom operator’s radio frequency capacity and coverage for 5G networks is already operational based on 4G data traffic profile. RIL has also revealed that Jio Platforms is working in collaboration with Original Equipment Manufacturers or OEMs in order to standardise 5G device configurations. In a statement, RIL mentioned that with 5G technology, Indian subscribers will be able to experience the benefits of higher data rates as well as low latency communications and enhanced digital experiences across a wide array of connected devices, from 5G-enabled smartphones, enterprise laptops and AR/VR products to vertical IoT solutions. |
| WhatsApp Is Rolling Out a New Search for Stickers Shortcut on Android Posted: 02 Jun 2021 07:15 AM PDT ![]()
Popular messaging application WhatsApp has been working on adding new features to the platform in recent times, from playback speeds for audio messages to flash calls, encrypted chat backups and a much asked for chat migration tool to help Android and iOS users easily transfer their data to the different platforms with ease. Now, the company seems to be in the process of rolling out a new feature that can make searching for stickers on the platform a breeze. As per a report by WaBeta Info, WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature by the name of Search for Stickers as a shortcut to select users running the Beta program, that too on Android. The feature, as the name clearly suggests, will allow users to search for the desired sticker easily. The shortcut analyses the first word that is typed in the chat bar and tries to match the word to any of the stickers that may be saved in the user’s sticker library. If it is there, it shows a suggestion to the user and, if you tap on the emoji button in the chat bar, it can also present the stickers related to the keyword in the chat bar. What Else Do We Know About The New FeatureThe blog mentions that as of now, this feature does not support any third-party stickers, but, it does support user-created sticker packs. In the words od the blog, if a user has created some sticker pack, he or she can start supporting the new feature by the Sticker Maker Studio, with up to 3 emojis possible within the stickers to allow WhatsApp to recognise the same. The feature has been made available for Android Version 2.21.12.1. However, as mentioned before, not all Android beta users will be given access to this new feature as the company is rolling it out to the beta users on a selective basis. Additionally, WhatsApp also rolled out the new feature dubbed playback speed for voice messages on Android and iOS-based apps recently, with support on the Web and Desktop applications as well. In case you missed it, by making use of the feature, users can listen to voice messages at three different speeds which are 1x, 1.5x and 2x. This will save a bit of time, especially for longer audio messages. |

| First Indian Mobile Manufacturing Company Capable of Building 5G Phone: Dixon Posted: 02 Jun 2021 04:23 AM PDT ![]()
Global Mobile Phone Market Still Strong: Dixon Technologies MDIt has to be noted that Padget Electronics in early October 2020, received approval from the Indian government under Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for manufacturing of mobile phones. The wholly owned subsidiary of Dixon Technologies in late December 2020, inked an agreement with Motorola for manufacturing of smartphones. Further, Padget Electronics in late January 2021, entered into an agreement with HMD India for manufacturing of Nokia smartphones. "I am keeping fingers closed and we are pursuing these relationships hoping that more and more benefits can accrue to us, because I find the global market is still strong and I still feel that our anchor customers are absolutely committed and the numbers are going to be fine," Lall said in the fourth quarter earnings call. The PLI scheme was notified by the Indian government on April 1, 2020, with the scheme offering 4% to 6% incentive on incremental sales of goods manufactured in India in select segments. In October 2020, the Indian government gave its approval to 16 companies including Padget Electronics, Samsung, Foxconn, Wistron, Lava and Micromax. "We are making further investment to meet the threshold levels and we will be targeting to take the capacity up to 15 million per annum in the next couple of years against a present capacity of 3.5 to 4 million given a strong order book from Motorola and out of this 60% to 65% will be for the export markets," Lall said. Additionally, the managing director at Dixon Technologies said that the company manufactured 600,000 Set-Top Box (STB) in the past quarter and over two million in the 2021 financial year. Lall said that the company has a "very healthy" order book for its STBs with demand for almost 500,000 STBs per month. However, the managing director at Dixon Technologies said that the company should be able to manufacture around 350,000 STBs "due to shortage of components." "So, the business is on a strong footing, at present our major customers are Jio for Den and Hathway and also we are now supplying to Dish TV and also Sify cable, so the order book is extremely robust," Lall said. Dixon Technologies Set to Supply Routers, Modems to Telecom OperatorsIn early April 2021, Dixon Technologies inked an memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Bharti Enterprises to create a joint venture (JV) company for manufacturing telecom and networking equipment such as modems and routers. It was said that the JV company will apply for the Indian government's PLI scheme for manufacturing of telecom and networking products. While the central government announced the scheme, Lall said that the company is "awaiting the guidelines." "Also let me share with you that irrespective of this PLI scheme, we are and have finalized an agreement with a principal for manufacturing modems and routers for supplying to the telecom operators and this kick off is going to take place within Q3 of this fiscal," Lall said. ICICI Direct said that the new client addition in the mobile space along with Dixon Technologies "entry into new product categories" will enable the company to record seven times growth in revenue. The financial product distributor in India in its report on Sunday also highlighted that Dixon Technologies will receive necessary government approvals for PLI schemes in the second half of the current financial year. Similarly, Dolat Capital, a financial firm engaged in the trading markets on Thursday said in a report that Dixon Technologies "continues to remain the best play on PLI in India." "Strong customer addition, diversification and fungibility of manufacturing are its strength," Dolat Capital said in its report. |

| DoT Eases Confusion of Telecom Vendors on PLI Scheme Posted: 02 Jun 2021 03:00 AM PDT ![]()
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has eased the confusion of telecom vendors on the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme meant for the telecom industry. The telecom department has said that it will take into account all the production and incremental investments made by the companies post-April 1, 2021 in India for the PLI scheme. According to a FinancialExpress report, the DoT might come out with the final guidelines on the PLI scheme by the end of the week. The report further said that companies need not worry about anything and go ahead with planning their investments and production targets for the PLI scheme. The official related to the matter told the publication that select companies which fit into the scheme will be extended its benefits. Telecom Companies Worried About Losing Precious TimeThe telecom vendors are worried about losing their precious time from the scheme due to government delays. According to an earlier report from ET Telecom, the vendors were worried about losing about 4 months of their crucial time since the telecom department didn't come with the final guidelines for the PLI scheme on time. The vendors said that two months of their current financial year have already passed. Since the department hasn't come out with the final guidelines, they are worried that it will take more time for the government to take the appropriate actions. However, the government has asked the interested companies who have the capacity to make investments for becoming eligible for the PLI scheme to start planning since it will come out with the names and the final guidelines very soon. Companies including Nokia, Ericsson, Cisco, Samsung, Dixon Technologies, and more have shown interest in being a part of India's PLI scheme. For the unaware, to become eligible for the telecom sector's PLI scheme, a small company needs to make a minimum investment of 10 crores. For big companies such as Nokia and Ericsson, the minimum investment required to be eligible for the scheme is Rs 100 crore. The scheme will cover the production of telecom products including 4G and 5G next-generation radios, routers, Internet of Things (IoT) products, and more. Hopefully, the government can come out with the final guidelines as soon as possible so that the companies don't have to lose out on more time. |

| Reliance Jio Gets More Numbering Resources for Maharashtra Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:13 PM PDT ![]()
Reliance Jio has acquired new numbering resources for the state of Maharashtra. The company said that it is to meet the demands of one million customers/subscribers in the state. Reliance Jio has time and again requested for new numbering resources from the telecom department for different circles of India. The additional numbering resources help the operator in tackling the increasing demand for numbers by new subscribers/connections. For the unaware, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) oversees the allocation of numbering resources to the operators around the country. Numbering Resource that Jio Acquired Recently in MaharashtraReliance Jio has acquired the ACCESS-MSC code "96990-96999" for Maharashtra. As per the company, this new numbering resource will help it in catering to over a million additional customers in the state. Jio can use this numbering resource for users who want new numbers. For each state, DoT allocates different MSC codes. DoT allocates new MSC codes in a limited quantity to the operators because of their scarce nature. With time, more new subscribers will come, and the operators will require more numbers to offer. Since there could only be a limited quantity of 10 digit numbers, the government oversees the allocation of the resource carefully. If you didn't know already, the first five digits of your mobile number are called the MSC code. DoT will only offer these codes to the operators when they need them so that the resource is not exploited. Reliance Jio is one operator that needs these codes heavily in regular intervals. Just over a month ago, Reliance Jio had acquired fresh MSC codes for multiple circles, including Madhya Pradesh (MP), Bihar, Gujarat, and West Bengal. For West Bengal, the operator got 87100, 76018-76019, 86498, 78108-78110, 78118-78120 MSC codes. For Gujarat, Jio received 87990-87996 and 98750-98752 MSC codes. For Madhya Pradesh, DoT offered Jio 84500, 82530, 86299, 84508, 86410, 86400, 82340, 82360, 82510, and 86430 MSC codes. Lastly, for Bihar, Jio got the 93410-93419 MSC codes from DoT. This need for additional numbering resources in all of these circles proves that Jio has been adding a ton of new subscribers, and it might end the quarter on a very positive note. It will be interesting to see when other operators, including Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi), request additional numbering resources. |
| Twitter Resumes Verification for ‘Blue Badge’ Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:39 PM PDT ![]()
The microblogging platform Twitter this morning resumed the verification process again for the users. The company paused it a few days back when it got a ton of requests for verification. However, through a tweet, Twitter has confirmed that it is resuming the verification process under the new guidelines. Once a user's profile is verified, he/she gets a 'Blue Badge' on his/her profile marking that person as authentic. What Happens to Already Submitted Requests? In the period when the verification requests were paused, Twitter said that it was reviewing the already submitted requests. The company didn't pause the process for a long period this time. Twitter announced that it is temporarily stopping verifications requests on May 29 and has resumed it on June 2. But this is not all that's going on with Twitter at the moment. In India, legal action against the company has been taken recently. The micro-blogging platform has been asked to comply with the new IT rules of the government within 3 weeks as per Delhi High Court’s order. Twitter has failed to comply with the new rules and regulations of the IT order completely. Even after getting three months, like all the other companies which have already complied with the order, Twitter wants more time to do so. To top this, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has further asked the central government to stop allowing children from accessing the application. For the unaware, the new IT rules seek for the social media platforms to appoint three officers who will oversee all the grievances and complaints of the users and the government. The grievance officer that Twitter has mentioned on the website is a U.S. citizen. The rules make it mandatory for the company to appoint officers who are local Indians. Since the new IT rules weren't put on stay, Twitter will have to comply with the order just like every other social media company. Note that the new IT rules only affect companies/platforms which have more than 50,00,000 or 5 million users in the country. It will be interesting to see how Twitter responds to this order since it basically has no choice but to follow the rules now. |
| Impact of Fiber Optics on Your Broadband Internet Speed Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:30 PM PDT ![]()
Technology is a fast-growing and advancing industry. The trends are similarly observed in the technology behind the transmission of the internet. This includes mediums that are used in delivering the internet to your doorstep. There are various mediums through which your ISP provides internet like – DSL, satellite, copper cables and the most recent Fiber Optics. Fibre Optic cables are fragile strands of pure glass. These cables have been replacing the copper cables used to deliver internet at a comparatively slower speed. As internet users are hungry for high-speed internet, a fibre optic cable is the one that's capable of doing so. Here are all the ways in which Fiber Optics impact your broadband internet speed. Transmission of Information is FasterWith fibre optic cables, information and data can travel at the speed of light. As a medium of transmitting data and information, fibre optic cables can transfer more data quicker, which means a high broadband speed for the end-user. These cables can transmit data faster than the traditional copper cables that were used for transmitting voice data. Balanced Upload and Download SpeedIts commonly known that the speed advertised by ISPs is only the download speed, and the upload speed is significantly lower. There are several use cases where a user might want balanced and upload speed, like if the internet is used for both uploading and downloading videos or data from the internet. The traditional copper cables lacked the flexibility to provide upload speed similar to download speed, but with fibre optic cables, you can enjoy a balanced upload and download speed which would provide a lag-free experience. Reliable ConnectionFibre Optic cables specialise in transmitting data faster over long distances. This means that no matter how far you are from the major city point, you can always ensure a smooth and reliable connection using fibre optics. These cables are built to tackle harsh environmental conditions like rain and high temperatures. A stable and dependable connection would ensure that the end-user is able to stay connected to a high-speed broadband internet connection at all times. Lag-Free Internet ExperienceIn simple terms, lag is the time difference between giving a command to the system and the command being actioned. A lag-free internet connection can be ensured using fibre-optic cables as it transmits data at the speed of light. The balances upload and download speed also contribute to a lag-free experience. A lag-free experience would make sure your movies stream without buffering, and your games run smoothly. Access to Cloud TechnologyCloud Technology is booming in today's world, where users require more and more storage to store their data. Cloud technology can store large quantities of data without using your phone's internal or external storage. Since clouds have huge data, the fast internet provided by fibre optic cables makes it easier to access data on the cloud. |
| Samsung Exynos Chipsets to Get Better GPU Power, Thanks to AMD Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:40 PM PDT ![]()
Samsung smartphones with Exynos chipsets aren't the most attractive offerings simply because there are other chipsets in the market that can do a better job. Chipset manufacturers such as Qualcomm and MediaTek produce far better chipsets than Samsung. The South Korean tech giant started offering Qualcomm powered smartphones in India once it saw that the users didn't like the Exynos variants much. However, Samsung isn't going to ignore its Exynos chipsets. It will keep on working to improve their power and efficiency. For doing the same, Samsung has partnered with a major chipset manufacturer called AMD. Samsung Partners AMD to Manufacture Exynos ChipsetsSamsung has partnered with AMD to manufacture future generation Exynos chipsets. As per a Verge report, the partnership will focus on improving the GPU performance of the Exynos chips. AMD will provide Samsung with its RDNA 2 graphics technology to do so. With the RDNA 2 architecture, the Exynos chipsets will be able to get features such as variable-rate shading and ray tracing. As per a statement from AMD, the chipsets with better GPU performance will go on the flagship smartphones. The partnership between the companies has only been announced as of yet and no work has actually started. AMD is still waiting for Samsung to provide more details later in the year. There's no guarantee that with RDNA 2 graphics technology, Exynos chipsets will perform better than their competition from Qualcomm and MediaTek. Regardless of the results, this move shows that Samsung is still thinking about focusing on the improvement of its Exynos chipsets in a major way. Producing chipsets in-house might help Samsung to reduce the overall costs of manufacturing smartphones. However, an educated consumer today who knows the difference between the Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets would mostly prefer the latter. To solve this issue, Samsung needs to improve in more areas than just graphics processing. Just for example, the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE with the Exynos chipset failed to impress many. However, when the same device was later introduced with a Qualcomm flagship chipset, it made the market very curious about the smartphone. There's no timeline given by either of the companies on when users can start seeing Exynos chipsets with RDNA 2 technology from AMD. However, it won't be long now given the official announcement has been made. |
| Here’s Why Mini-LED Panels Deserve the Hype Posted: 01 Jun 2021 08:00 PM PDT ![]()
Display technologies have been more or less the same in recent years, with the only exception being the flexible displays that can provide a unique canvas to view content on. OLEDs have been replacing LCD, with budget smartphones finally adopting OLED screens, forgoing their LCD past. The market however was shaken up by the introduction of Mini-LED technology and, with Apple choosing to make use of the same for its new iPad, it seems that the day is not that far when flagships and premium devices make the move from OLEDs to Mini-LED. Now, if you, like countless others are unaware of what Mini-LED is, worry not, as we will discuss what Mini-LED is and why there is a certain amount of hype surrounding the new display technology. What is Mini-LED Tech?
In terms of the basics, the name should be a dead giveaway. Mini-LEDs make use of small LEDs in order to produce the display’s light. This new technology is a sort of a descendant of the traditional LCD technology, which is usually backlit in nature. The key difference here is that instead of using a single large backlight or small backlights, Mini-LEDs make use of thousands and thousands of tiny LED backlights that offer superior local dimming capabilities. Numerically speaking, in order to be a Mini-LED backlight, each diode is required to be less than 0.2mm in size. Coming to the term Local dimming, it is quite important when it comes to LCD panels since backlight bleeds in these panels leads to poor quality of blacks and contrast ratios in comparison to an OLED panel. This is a hybrid method that aims to meet the quality of an OLED, minus the intricacy. It can be termed as the best shot an LCD has to reach the capabilities of an OLED. Do note that this is not the same as Micro-LED technology, which is quite different and will be discussed sometime in the future. The biggest positive of the Mini-LED tech is the ability to move thousands of tiny backlights in order to provide deeper blacks, higher contrast ratios and brighter displays. This bodes well for content consumption, especially if the content is in HDR. Mini-LED tech also scales from small to large pixel sizes at ease, meaning that there is no limit to the size and density. There are some drawbacks, primarily due to the technological limitations of the LCD matrix that converts white backlight into different colours, but that is not concerning in the case of smaller electronic devices. Why Is Mini-LED The Next Best Thing?
For each and every tech company in the world, cost and pricing models are key to the success of the device and, with Mini-LED tech, they can attain superior image quality without the exorbitant costs that OLEDs come with. Mini-LEDs are much cheaper than OLEDs, especially considering how peak brightness is something that Mini-LEDs can nail, making them the better alternative for tablet and laptop displays. In terms of the on-paper specifications, Mini-LEDs offer colour quality, good contrasts, rivalling OLEDs whilst costing less. The first-gen versions were a bit expensive, but, with time, they will soon be the one-word answer to the question of what the best display for a device is. Do note that Mini-LEDs are not the only display tech heading towards the market, with Quantum Dot or QLED panels and flexible OLEDs, in the case of foldable phones right at the heels of the Mini-LED technology. |
