Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers 4G plans even though it doesn't have a PAN-India 4G network. There are a few customers of the telco who live in the region where it provides 4G network services. If you are unaware of what BSNL offers under its 4G prepaid plans portfolio, you will be surprised to see the value they bring to the table. BSNL 4G plans are very unique and offer a lot of data to the consumers for a very less amount of money. Here are all the BSNL 4G plans that are worth your money. BSNL 4G Plans Worth Your MoneyThe first plan that you can purchase from the state-run telco today is 'STV_247'. This plan comes with a validity of 30 days, and users get 3GB of daily data with the plan. Post the consumption of daily data limit; the speed drops to 80 Kbps. Further, there is 100 SMS/day, unlimited voice calling and free BSNL tunes, along with a subscription to Eros Now Entertainment services. Moving ahead, there is 'STV_298'. This plan also offers unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day to the users, along with a free Eros Now subscription. However, it comes with a longer validity of 54 days and offers users 1GB of daily data (40 Kbps after the data limit reached). Then there are three more BSNL 4G plans that users must check out. These plans are – 'STV_429', 'STV_499', and 'STV_WFH_599'. All of these plans come with the benefit of truly unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. But these plans differ in terms of validity, data, and the additional benefits they provide to the users. The 'STV_429' comes with 1GB daily data (40 Kbps post daily limit) and Eros Now Entertainment services for 81 days. The 'STV_499', on the other hand, comes with 90 days of validity and offers users 2GB of daily data. Users also get a free Zing and BSNL Tunes subscription with this plan. Lastly, with the 'STV_WFH_599', users get 5GB daily data (80 Kbps post-consumption) for 84 days and a free subscription of Zing. There is also a data voucher called 'TrulyUnlimitedSTV_398'. It offers users truly unlimited data without any restrictions for 30 days, along with unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. There is no other additional benefit offered by BSNL. All of these plans are currently available from BSNL, and the telco might not offer one or more of the above-mentioned plans in select circles. |

| Vodafone Idea New Rs 447 Plan Offers 50GB Data Without Daily Limit Posted: 23 Jun 2021 04:38 AM PDT ![]()
Vodafone Idea has come out with a new prepaid plan of Rs 447. This plan is of the same nature as that of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel's plan that offers users data without any daily limits. With the Rs 447 plan, Vi users can consume all the data they have in one go. It is worth noting that this plan is very similar to that of Bharti Airtel's plan. Let's take a look at the complete benefits of the plan offered to the users. Vodafone Idea Rs 447 Plan DetailsVodafone Idea has launched the Rs 447 plan and is offering users 50GB of bulk data with it. There are no caps on the amount of data the user can consume. It is worth noting that Airtel also offers a Rs 456 plan with 50GB of data. Both Airtel and Vi offer their users the 50GB bulk data plan for 60 days. This means that Vodafone Idea's bulk data plan is cheaper than that of Airtel's. It is interesting and highly appreciable that Vi is offering a cheaper plan than Airtel with the same benefits. We expected that the telco would offer the same plan, around Rs 500 at least. Along with the 50GB data, users also get truly unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day. There are no additional benefits offered with the plan except a free subscription to Vi Movies & TV. So now, only Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is the only telco left that is not offering users a bulk data prepaid plan. We expect the state-run telco to come up with such a prepaid plan very soon as well. It has some pretty interesting offerings under its portfolio, and BSNL might just bring the cheapest bulk data plan for the users with the same benefits or more. However, we don't see the bulk data plan from the state-run telco making a lot of impact on the market since its users can still get a 5GB daily data plan from the telco for a little more. Regardless, this is a good move from Vodafone Idea (Vi) and one which will let it compete with Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. |
| Reliance Dials JioPhone for Growth, Jio Momentum Unlikely to Sustain Say Analysts Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:56 AM PDT ![]()
Reliance Jio User Additions Spike with "Aggressive" JioPhone SchemesThe report is on the heels of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Friday releasing the Telecom Subscription Data for the period ended March 31, 2021. The Trai data highlights that the telecom operators in India added over 1.3 crore users in March with Airtel and Vodafone Idea also adding over 40 lakh and 10 lakh gross users respectively. Further, the state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is said to have added 194,310 users in March while Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) lost over 8000 users in the month. "Vodafone Idea's (VIL) gross subscriber additions remained positive for the second month in a row, after declining for 15 months on the trot," Motilal Oswal said in its report. "However, active subscribers continued to decline since its integration in Nov'18." The Trai data highlights that Vodafone Idea lost 380,000 active users in March, with the total active user base of the third largest operator in India dropping to 25.57 crores. However, Motilal Oswal said that the overall 4G user additions in March also received a "push from the JioPhone launch" with the industry recording 1.25 crore new users. The firm said that the 4G user base in India has now increased to 75.5 crores with 4G users "now accounting for 75.9%" of overall active users in India. In late February, Jio announced a new scheme for the JioPhone that provided users "unlimited services" for two years for Rs 1999. The company highlighted that the users who pay Rs 1999 will receive a "new" JioPhone along with "unlimited voice calls and "unlimited data" restricted to 2GB per month for the two year period. Additionally, the company in early March unveiled five new data plans for the JioPhone priced at Rs 22, Rs 52, Rs 72, Rs 102 and Rs 152. ICICI Securities in a report on Sunday said that Jio gained users with an "aggressive offer on the JioPhone" but that the operator is "unlikely to sustain" the users in the long term. The subsidiary of ICICI Bank in its report said the "most" new users are "coming as second SIM." "RJio had seen active subs dip in [the] past two months; sudden jump was on account of aggressive long validity offer on JioPhone; thus, we don't think the net add will be sustaining. Moreover, we have not seen the new offer helping RJio to grow [its] active subs portion," ICICI Securities said in its report. Reliance Industries in its annual report for the financial year ended March 31, 2021, said that the JioPhone since its unveiling in 2017, "upgraded over 100 million users." The report released in early June also highlights that the mobile data penetration has increased to 35% in rural areas as compared to 13% prior to the arrival of Jio in the marketspace. Bharti Airtel Holds Position Despite Jio Aggression Say AnalystsMeanwhile, ICICI Securities in its report highlighted that the active user base of Airtel increased over 48 lakh to 34.4 crores in March. The firm said that the increase in active user base of Airtel was aided by its gross user additions "indicating the improving quality" of user additions. "Bharti has maintained net add despite aggression from RJio, which is good execution," ICICI Securities said in its report. Motilal Oswal said that Airtel was "undeterred by Jiophone launch" and that the operator "continued its steady run-rate" of user additions in March. Further, the firm highlighted that Airtel has "maintained its top spot in terms of active subscriber market share" at 34.6% in the month. "MNP has remained elevated in the past two months, and we suspect Bharti is gaining from it," ICICI Securities said in its report. |
| iPhone 13 Series Likely to Come With Three Devices Only! Posted: 23 Jun 2021 02:55 AM PDT ![]()
The iPhone 13 series might not come with the four devices that you saw in the iPhone 12 series. Apple might cut down on the cheapest variant namely the 'mini' device for the iPhone 13 series. There is a strong reason behind this. Apple almost always gets its strategies right, but with the iPhone 12 series, the company didn't think the right way. iPhone 13 mini Would Be a Wrong MoveApple recently halted the iPhone 12 mini production. There's no hiding the fact that the iPhone 12 mini was underperforming quite heavily in terms of sales. People were opting for the regular iPhone 12 instead of the iPhone 12 mini. Looking at this, it only makes sense that Apple comes out with three iPhone 13 models – a) iPhone 13, b) iPhone 13 Pro, and c) iPhone 13 Pro Max. There's one thing that Apple didn't get right with the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The Cupertino tech giant only focused on making the iPhone 12 mini smaller and didn't differentiate it from the iPhone 12 in anything else. Further, the close pricing of the two smartphones pushed people into investing a little more and get the bigger screen iPhone. This is an era where people want large screen (at least 6-inches on average) smartphones and thus if Apple really wanted the iPhone 12 mini to be an attractive offering, it should have priced it even lower with certain differences in the performance. Look, from close pricing, I don't mean the difference of Rs 10,000 is less. Psychologically, if this was a Rs 30,000 device and a user could get its slightly smaller version for Rs 20,000, that would have been a huge difference. But for a user, who is spending Rs 70,000 on an iPhone 12 mini, he/she wouldn't think a lot about spending Rs 10,000 more as a big difference. No one would want to spend that much money on a small smartphone when its bigger variant is Rs 10,000 away. Thus, Apple might make a huge mistake if it comes out with the iPhone 13 mini the same way it did with the iPhone 12 mini. However, Apple can do a few things to ensure that its future 'mini' devices are successful if it plans on coming out with such devices. iPhone 13 mini, What Should Apple Do to Make it Successful?iPhone 13 mini can be priced at least with a gap of Rs 20,000 from the regular iPhone 13. Further, Apple should carefully reduce the features and the specs of the iPhone 13 mini. The iPhone 13 mini could feature the older generation chipset but still retain all the new features. The camera performance of the devices could be the same. There should be enough differentiation between the devices and the price should also be quite far away. Looking at the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12, it feels like Apple might have tried the 'Decoy Effect'. Maybe Apple wanted the iPhone 12 mini to fail in the first place and launched it to only act as a catalyst to boost the iPhone 12 sales. Note that this is just an assumption and Apple might or might not have strategised the way I have interpreted things. |
| Broadband Internet Is Better Than 4G: Opinion Posted: 23 Jun 2021 01:44 AM PDT ![]()
The requirement and demand for broadband Internet have surged due to the pandemic and the rising culture of working and learning from home. At a time such as this, one would want an internet network that's not only fast and secure but is also reliable in the sense that it would not keep dropping its speed or connectivity. This is why broadband internet becomes an ideal option and in comparison is better than 4G if you are working from home. 4G Networks in India Are Very CongestedBecause a large population of India relies heavily on the top two operators of the country, including Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio, the 4G networks of these companies are mostly congested. If you live in an urban area and are working from home, you wouldn't want to depend on the 4G network of Jio or Airtel to do things such as video conferencing, download heavy and important work files during peak hours. This is because, during peak hours, the networks of these telcos are so congested that people can't even use basic internet services properly. At the same time, with a broadband connection, you don't have to face any such issues. Broadband connections are the best because their up-time is very high and they provide internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps. Further, users don't have to worry about their Wi-Fi networks getting too congested because they can control which device is connected to their network. You can comfortably choose internet speed plans that fulfil your requirements and then just work seamlessly without any worries. Mobile networks sometimes perform good and then perform bad, but with a broadband connection, you don't have to worry about losing connectivity until and unless you are out of the Wi-Fi network coverage. Different Use Cases of 4G and BroadbandOne thing that's worth noting here is that both broadband and 4G have different use cases. This is because broadband internet can't be utilised once you step out of the Wi-Fi network coverage, which is usually very small. But with 4G networks, you can sit in a cafe and keep working. Thus, if you are someone who moves a lot and works from different locations, a strong 4G network can only help you. 5G is still years away in India now, so the users have got only two options for now – broadband or 4G. While satellite broadband is making its way to India, it won't be cheap, and I expect mostly enterprise customers to purchase its plans initially. There are several broadband internet service providers in every part of India. Even telecom operators, including Vodafone Idea (You Broadband), Reliance Jio (JioFiber), Bharti Airtel (Airtel Xstream Fiber), and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL Bharat Fibre), provide broadband services to customers all around India. However, note that whenever I say broadband, I mean fiber broadband. It is with fiber broadband technology only that people can receive internet speeds of up to 1 Gbps on their premises. |
| Vodafone Idea, Cisco Partner to Boost Network Capacity Posted: 23 Jun 2021 12:17 AM PDT ![]()
Vodafone Idea (Vi) has just announced its partnership with Cisco for boosting its 4G networks. The third-largest telecom operator of India, Vi, will be using equipment from Cisco to boost its network capacity. It is worth noting that Vi already has an impressive network capacity because of the refarming of the 3G spectrum to 4G. Now with the added capacity, Vi users will be able to connect to the internet and use data faster. Vodafone Idea and Cisco Also Looking at 5GVodafone Idea and Cisco have also kept 5G in mind. Vi will be taking the help of Cisco in automating its network support to its 4G services but will also look at the 5G use cases that might develop in the future. This will ensure that every customer (enterprise and retail) gets the best quality voice calling and data experience from the network of Vodafone Idea. Cisco and Vi are building a cost-efficient network architecture that will drive the telco to the market at a greater speed where 4G, 5G, along with the Internet-of-Things (IoT), is concerned. Vodafone Idea to Deploy Cisco Ultra Packet CoreVodafone Idea will be deploying the Cisco Ultra Packet Core in its network architecture. This will enable Vi to further deploying additional softwares and new applications and services, including Vo-Wi-Fi (VoWi-Fi) support. The Ultra Packet Core from Cisco will help Vodafone Idea in enhancing its network capacity and allow the telco to offer greater performance to its customers with the help of automation and analytics. This will further result in Vi being able to reach more customers and allowing the devices to connect faster to its networks. Jagbir Singh, the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Vodafone Idea, said that the company is committed to helping its customers receive seamless services empowered by an automated and intelligent network. Adam MacHale, Vice President of EMEAR Service Provider, Cisco, said Vodafone Idea is committed to provide the best network services to its customers and bridge the digital gap that exists between the rural and the urban areas of the country. Thus, as per MacHale, this is a 'significant’ step towards India's digital transformation journey. |

| UPI Payments See Inevitable Growth in India Posted: 22 Jun 2021 11:12 PM PDT ![]()
Indians rely heavily on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) to make real-time online cash transactions for almost anything they purchase today. Be it food bills, grocery shopping, clothes, to making payments online for utilities, Indians have started leveraging UPI to complete the transactions. Now, the UPI, along with other payments modes, including cash and cards, has seen a growth in volume in the first three weeks of June in India. This was inevitable and is not at all surprising since the economy is slowly opening up. UPI Transactions Volume Up by 12.3% In JuneDuring May, when the second wave of COVID-19 was at its peak, the UPI transactions, as well as other modes of payments, saw a sharp decline because people weren't stepping out of their homes much. So it was obvious that the UPI transaction volume would go down. However, in the first three weeks of June, things have picked up. Compared to the same period in May, UPI transactions volume surged by 12.3% in June in India. As per an ET Telecom report, the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) digital payments database suggests that debit and credit card payments also saw an increase in volume by 12.7% and 18.6%. Further, as the lockdowns are slowly lifted up around the country, people are opening their wallets to spend a little more. As compared to May, the June trends suggest that people are spending 18% more. As more and more people get online connectivity with strong mobile networks, the more the role of the UPI will increase. Many applications such as Google Pay and PhonePe leverage the UPI system to allow Indians to make seamless real-time online cash transactions. Things are expected to pick up even further as more and more people get vaccinated, and the overall sentiment of the market towards the pandemic shifts to a slightly more positive note. UPI transactions can be made by people even when they are sitting at their homes. Users can pay utility bills just by entering the required information in the right fields through the convenience of their couch/bed. The increase in the volume of UPI transactions isn't surprising at all since the market has opened up compared to the lockdowns in May. |
| Samsung Launches New Chipsets to Boost 5G RAN Portfolio Posted: 22 Jun 2021 09:46 PM PDT ![]()
On its 'Samsung Networks: Redefined' virtual event, Samsung launched new chipsets that will be a part of the company's next-generation 5G solutions portfolio. Samsung announced three new chipsets which are compliant with the 3GPP Release 16. The three new chipsets announced are – a) 3rd generation mmWave RFIC, b) 2nd generation 5G Modem SoC, and c) DFE-RFIC Integrated chip. These chipsets are designed to boost the performance and power efficiency of the 5G solutions developed by Samsung. Let's take a look at these chipsets individually. Samsung said that these new chipsets would be commercially available in 2022. |
| Broadband and DIA Key Differences You Should Know Posted: 22 Jun 2021 09:30 PM PDT ![]()
The internet has been able to bring a phenomenal change in the way businesses operate in current global markets. Businesses use the internet to sustain their IT ecosystem, which acts as a backbone for their operations. Through these IT ecosystems, businesses run applications like VoIP, conferencing, cloud applications, media download/upload, file sharing, email and much more. It is essential for businesses to always remain online and connected to the internet around the clock. Some of the widely preferred internet service types are Direct Internet Access (DIA) and Broadband. A DIA or Direct Internet Access is built to comply with mobile business standards. They come with a specific bandwidth amount chosen by the user. The selected bandwidth will only be shared amongst the users of a specific physical unit. A broadband internet connection, on the other hand, works on a shared network where a number of users share a common larger connection allotted to their area. There are a few key differences between DIA and Broadband. Broadband Provides Asymmetrical SpeedsOne of the key differences between DIA and Broadband is the type of speed they provide. As a DIA connection is not shared amongst many users, this type of internet connection can provide symmetrical upload and download speed. This allows users to run multiple applications and eliminate shutdowns. Broadband connections provide asymmetrical speeds, which means the download speed will usually be higher than the upload speed. In business-related use cases, asymmetrical speed is always preferred and appreciated. DIA Provides Stable Bandwidth Performance with Minimal LagsAs we noted in the previous point that DIA offers symmetrical speed, this subsequently results in better bandwidth performance and low latency. With DIA, you can enjoy an uninterrupted connection with high speed and minimal lags, and there is no disturbance in the network. The bandwidth performance and latency in a broadband connection depend on your ISP's network traffic. The congestion in the link between your ISP and your modem will surely impact your bandwidth performance. DIA Is Backed by Service Legal AgreementsA DIA connection would have a set standard of performance, speed and quality, which would be in compliance with the Service Legal Agreement. If there is any issue with speed or quality, a user is contractually eligible for SLA credits. Troubleshooting issues are also standardized in the case of DIA as they work under SLAs. A broadband connection can have a longer, unpredictable downtime depending on the criticality of the issue and how quickly your ISP addresses and resolves it. |
| Samsung Announces Clever 5G Radio That Integrates Several Antennas Posted: 22 Jun 2021 08:53 PM PDT ![]()
Samsung recently held the 'Samsung Networks: Redefined' event in which it showcased its newly developed network technologies. One of the announcements made by the South Korean tech giant was the new 5G radio with integrated antennas. Samsung has named it 'One Antenna Radio'. The speciality of this new 5G radio from Samsung is that it integrates several antennas into a single form factor. Samsung has consolidated the 3.5 GHz Massive MIMO radio by integrating it with low-band and mid-band passive antennas. Samsung to Avail the New 5G Radio by Early 2022The One Antenna Radio from Samsung will be available for the operators starting early 2022. The company will initially target the European market with its new antenna. It is a very clever solution for the telecom service providers (TSPs) since it will effectively result in less time and less cost for the installation. One of the biggest challenges that the TSPs face with the 5G rollout is the footprint and space that the new telecom sites will take. But with the One Antenna Radio, operators can ease a little as they won't have to worry about OPEX or installation issues. The new Samsung One Antenna Radio will help the operators in three major ways. The first is that it will simplify the installation process. The new radio doesn't require as much cabling or visual hardware elements that are used by the traditional radios in urban areas. Further, since the new radio comes integrated with several antennas, the companies won't have to worry about installing multiple antennas and connecting radios. This will result in a fast installation process and also reduce the labour costs for the company. Lastly, since less space will be required for the radio in the telecom sites and towers, TSPs will be able to reduce their OPEX as the maintenance costs and everything else will be less as well. It is a really clever solution developed by Samsung and one in which many TSPs all around the world will be interested. Samsung's network equipment contracts are expected to be boosted in Europe, given that the Chinese companies Huawei and ZTE are being ignored now. |
