| The Upcoming Mi TV 6 Comes With This Cool Camera Technology Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:47 AM PDT ![]()
Xiaomi has not been shy when it comes to innovating, be it for accessories or for products that have more approach, such as tablets or smartphones. Be it the company’s Mix series of devices that offer great design or the charging speeds on offer from the company, inclusive of the over 100W charging technology showcased earlier in 2021. Now, it seems that Xiaomi and its sub-brands might revolutionise TVs and their cameras, since, whilst it is known that certain TVs come with in-built cameras, they have not yet become mainstream. The TV’s built-in camera can perform multiple tasks, be it face recognition or video call, they are a great tool. Some manufacturers who are already known for this technology include Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi, but, to date, none have been able to offer a television with a dual-camera setup. That is set to change with Xiaomi’s Mi TV 6. Prior to an official launch, Xiaomi on Thursday revealed the key features of its upcoming flagship TV, with the TV 6 featuring dual cameras, especially a 48MP dual camera setup. What Do We Know About the Mi TV 6?The poster related to the Xiaomi Mi TV 6 showcases a poster that reveals that the TV will come with a new interactive mode that can take advantage of the additional camera sensor set to be present on the upcoming TV. Whilst the poster fails to mention which apps will be able to avail its utilities, presumptions put in games and fitness apps to be the top option. The Mi TV 6 is already a pretty impressive smart TV given by the leaks and promos since it has been revealed that the TV will come with 4.2.2 surround sound and spatial audio, complete with 100W in-built speakers. I/O options include two HDMI 2.1 ports, with the TVs featuring Wi-Fi 6 support and AMD’s FreeSync Premium for ultra-low latency during gaming sessions. The TV also comes with a certification that states that it is designed for Xbox. To add to all of this, Xiaomi has also confirmed that the TV will make use of QLED or Quantum Dot technology for the display, with Dolby Vision IQ, a feature that can allow the TV to automatically adjust its brightness to ambient light. In case you were wondering, the Mi TV 6 is scheduled for a launch in China on June 28, but, as of the time of writing, we do not know whether or not it will launch in India. |
| Social Media Platforms to Close Fake Accounts Within 24 Hours of Request Posted: 24 Jun 2021 08:04 AM PDT ![]()
The rising cases of fake social media accounts have been concerning for users worldwide. In an attempt to curb and stop fake accounts from lowering the privacy standards, the Indian government has announced a crucial decision that would relieve the users around all the platforms. As reported by TNN, the government of India has mandated all the major social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube to shut fake accounts with fake pictures of renowned celebrities, businessman and general subscribers within the time frame of 24 hours of being notified by the same user or representative users. The New IT Rules Will Aid Users in Privacy and Safety FeaturesThe Indian government has mandated the social media platforms to shut fake accounts within 24 hours of a request under the new IT rules. All the platforms will have no other option but to act immediately after getting the complaint. Even though platforms like Twitter, Instagram and YouTube verify accounts of known personalities, there are ample fake profiles created of the same person. The reason behind creating fake profiles can vary. For some people creating fake profiles can be a fun source, or it can give wings to their criminal intentions. Since impersonators use a real picture and morphed images, it becomes difficult for other users to identify the threat. The IT rules have also mandated social media platforms to remove any content around nudity, obscenity and sexual act or conduct within 24 hours. Since the knowledge around a verified profile is less, the new IT rules make a mention where users can get the option to verify their accounts. However, there are certain criteria under which a user will have to fall. Social Media Companies to Appoint Grievance OfficersThe new IT rules strive to provide complete protection to internet users. Also, it has been deployed to make social media platforms more accountable for all the negative and wrong content that is spreading around the internet. The new IT rules direct all social media companies to appoint a grievance officer, a nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. All the officers must be regional, and their offices should be in India. |

| Airtel Welcomes Budget Jio 4G Device Posted: 24 Jun 2021 06:04 AM PDT ![]()
What Does Airtel Have to SayAirtel has stated that it welcomes the low-end smartphone initiative from Reliance Jio and Google. They support every effort that triggers the upgradation of feature phones to smartphones so as to bring more Indians online. The telcos experience has shown that as customers with entry-level devices upgrade to quality smartphones which are priced over INR 7000, they demonstrate a strong preference for Airtel's brand and network. In the long run, this complements its strategy of focusing on quality customers with world-class services. The telco has further mentioned that it will continue to work with device manufacturers to make quality smartphones accessible for customers through innovative financing and bundling offers. In doing so, it will strengthen the efforts of all our partners in the ecosystem. The comments from Airtel came just hours after Reliance Industries Chairman, Mr Mukesh Ambani announced that Jio, in collaboration with Google would be launching India’s most affordable 4G smartphone on September 10, with the aim to target the country’s 300 million 2G device users. Do note that Airtel has maintained that it has no plans to shut down or switch off its 2G networks, stating that such a step is only feasible when 2G services do not generate meaningful amounts of revenue, which, as of now, is not the case. |

| Digital Divide Scenario in India Posted: 24 Jun 2021 02:26 AM PDT ![]()
India's high-income equality is popularly known globally, but income is not the only segment with a divide amongst the population. During the ongoing pandemic, connectivity has become a very crucial element in our lives as it acts as a medium of not just communication but also information exchange. Contrary to the increase in smartphones sales in India, millions of people still do not have access to the internet. There is a considerable digital divide amongst the urban and rural parts of the country. In simple terms, the digital divide is the gap in the number of people who have access to basic technology like mobile phones, computers and the internet and those who don't. With the pandemic forcing work and learning to go online, people lacking access to these basic technologies subsequently lose opportunities to work or learn online. Another major use case of the internet, especially amidst the pandemic, is information sharing. Information that can be accessed on the internet, including information and update on the virus, updates and schedule of vaccinations, makes the repercussions of the digital divide evident. There are two main concerns because of which a digital divide exists in India. Accessibility in Rural AreasThe Indian Government has spent billions of dollars developing internet connection in rural areas of the country over the last few years. However, there are still thousands of rural areas, including villages, where the mobile networks of most major telecom operators are non-existent. Bridging the digital divide gap between urban and rural areas is difficult because rural broadband expansion is costly, and the procedure is time-consuming. The location factor also comes into play as most telecom operators have their mobile network infrastructure set up in urban areas. Affordability Is Less Common Than It SeemsIt has only been a couple of years since internet services prices have come down, expanded the customer base and increased usage of the internet in a multifold fashion. However, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center, almost half of the Indians who do not have access to the internet state that the reason behind it is the high cost involved. As the telecom operator face extreme competition with each other, they bring down the price of their services, making them more affordable than the other. However, the study results show that the affordability of the internet and the basic technologies are less common than it seems. |

| Twitter Helping Indian Creators Earn Money Through Content Posted: 23 Jun 2021 11:27 PM PDT ![]()
Twitter has just introduced the 'Tip-Jar' feature for users in India. The micro-blogging platform will leverage Razonpay's technology to support its 'Tip-Jar' feature in India. Through the new feature, users can make payments to freelancers, non-government organisations, new media professionals, journalists, content creators, and more. The best thing is, Twitter won't take a cut out of these payments in any manner. Twitter Rolls Out 'Tip-Jar' Feature With Razorpay in IndiaAccording to an ET Telecom report, Twitter was in the beta phase of the feature with Razorpay. But now, the service/feature has finally been launched for users in India. The publication's report mentions that initially, this feature will only be reserved for creators, public figures, journalists, community leaders, and experts. To make payment, a Twitter user would be taken to Razorpay's payment page, where he/she can choose UPI, net banking, debit card, or credit card for completing the transaction. Twitter's 'Tip-Jar' feature would be available for both Android and iOS users. Twitter said that this is one of the several upcoming ways in which users can earn money through Twitter. Further, since India is a very diverse country, this feature will also be available in multiple languages such as Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Gujarati, Bangla, and Tamil. In other countries, Twitter is allowing users to make payments through third-party applications such as PayPal, Patreon, Venmo, Cash App, and Bandcamp. This is a good strategy from Twitter to attract the attention of the users in the country. It will help the micro-blogging platform in increasing user retention and motivate them to come up with more interesting and unique content. This is the first time that Twitter if offering such a feature to the users. It is worth noting that this feature comes at a time when the government of India is at odds with Twitter. The government wants the social media giant to comply with the new IT rules; however, Twitter is adamant and believes that the new IT rules will take away people's power of free speech and privacy. The company is yet to comply with the new laws and hence lost the 'protection-shield' in the country. |
| Vodafone Idea Here to Stay, Mittal’s Comments Not a Threat: Opinion Posted: 23 Jun 2021 10:33 PM PDT ![]()
Sunil Bharti Mittal has repeatedly said that it would be tragic if India's telecom market is reduced to two private players. While Mittal has a lot of experience inside the telecom industry and his insights are valuable, his mention of India becoming a two private telecom operators nation is largely speculation and unrealistic at the moment. Mittal has indirectly taken a dig at the struggling Vodafone Idea (Vi) and said that India is already down to 2.5 operators from earlier 12, and if things boil down to 2 operators, it will be tragic for the industry. Note that Mittal didn't say that he wants the industry to be run by 2 operators only, and neither did he take Vi's name, but one can surely understand which operator he was talking about. His comments were more on the 'tragic' note if that was to happen, meaning he supports and wants the market to have 3 private players at least. Vodafone Idea Gaining MomentumMittal’s comments don't seem very threatening at the moment. Yes, I agree with his statement that if the industry was to boil down to two operators, it would be 'tragic'. However, looking at the way Vi has added subscribers in February and March 2021, it doesn't feel like that would happen. Vodafone Idea has invested a ton of money and resources on its network, and if you can do the math, the investment wasn't to exit the market but to offer better services and gain subscribers. The best part is, the telco did gain subscribers. Vi further provided the fastest 4G network in India for three consecutive quarters. The telco has prepaid plans which no other operator offers. More importantly, Vi is listening to its customers. The telco just started providing services in Parapatta, a small village in Kerala where no other operator is providing network services. This shows that the telco is also looking at the rural parts of India to expand the business. With the added network capacity, a new partnership with Cisco that the telco announced yesterday, and great prepaid plans, Vodafone Idea is just as good as any other telecom operator in India. There's no denying that Vi has its challenges, and there will be more hardships ahead, but there's one thing that's clearly visible, Vi is here to stay. The telco's network services are only improving, and it is only a matter of time when I believe Vi will be competing at par with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. Consumers Understanding the Power of Vi's 4G NetworksConsumers are finally understanding and getting across the power of Vi's 4G networks. What the telco lacks in the network coverage domain, it makes up for it in the network capacity. That said, there's no way Vi isn't planning on expanding the network coverage aggressively. Further, there's no other operator who offers leftover FUP data to its customers from the weekdays on the weekends. On top of that, there's no operator who offers free data at nights and that too every day. Vi is just too big and too good to go away from the market. Whatever telcos' had to go, they have gone. But the ones that are here – are here to stay. There's no way one can ignore Vi's enterprise business. The telco is aiming to bump up revenues with its enterprise business and will be further revamping broadband offerings throughout the nation to attract new customers. This coupled with 4G network services, and if the subscriber addition rate keeps consistent, the telco will be out of its troubles very soon. |
| BSNL 4G Tender Finally Sees Some Development Posted: 23 Jun 2021 09:29 PM PDT ![]()
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has been under a lot of pressure financially because of losing subscribers and low revenues. The telco's 4G tenders have been time and again interfered with and delayed. After a long time, a little development related to the 4G tender of the company has emerged. According to an ET Telecom report, Indian vendors, for whom BSNL has reserved 57,000 4G sites nationally, submitted Expression of Interest (EoI) for participating in the telco's 4G tender. BSNL 4G Tender Sees TCS, L&T, Galore Networks and More Showing InterestIndian companies, including the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Tech Mahindra, HFCL, ITI Limited, and Galore Networks, have submitted EoI for BSNL's 4G tender. As per the publication, Tech Mahindra, HFCL, and L&T submitted their bid with US-based Mavenir for radio and Mumbai-based Pertsol for core technology. The highlight of the submissions was Galore Networks. It is a Bengaluru based company that claims to offer Internet-of-Things (IoT), 5G, Cloud solutions, and legacy network products. Galore hasn't partnered with any other company to source radio and core technology. BSNL is yet to finalise the EoIs. The state-run telco will give the letter of intent to all the qualified companies after it has reviewed the EoIs. Further, the qualified bidders will have to present a bank guarantee (BG) of Rs 5 crore to show that they can start with the Proof of Concept (PoC) and complete it within 4 months. According to the publication, BSNL will allot one city to each selected company to show their PoC. There are eight cities in total, and each MSI will get one city. If their technology comes across as successful, they will be allowed to be a part of the tender. BSNL's 4G network can be rolled out in 10 months if the local companies can generate Proof of Concept (PoC) within 4 months. So the state-run telco will take at least 14 months from now to come out with live 4G networks. However, if there are any more delays in the trials phase, it would result in an extended time for the network rollout. BSNL's survival depends on the success of its 4G networks; the telco must ensure that it is rolled out as fast as possible. |
| Google Is Releasing Android 12 Beta 2.1 to Fix Beta Build Bugs Posted: 23 Jun 2021 08:26 PM PDT ![]()
Google had recently announced the next version of Android, Android 12 during its Spring showcase and, in doing so, had mentioned that some devices would soon be getting the beta build, primary of those being Pixels. At the start of the month of June, we got to see some of the biggest features touted to accompany the next version of the Android operating system, including the new Privacy Dashboard and the cool context-based theming system that can make changes on the basis of the colours and tones present in the wallpaper. Since then, the Android 12 Beta 2 has been successful in bringing some of these features, but, they were accompanied by stability problems that, if you are a new beta build user, will not be the most appealing experience for such a cool behind-the-scenes look at the next version of Android. Today, Google announced that it is rolling out a minor update to the Android 12 Beta 2, with the name Beta 2.1. In case you are already on the Beta build, a notification should prompt you to download the latest update and, if you are new to the programme or want to be a beta tester, then the latest update will be the one that Google provides to the new user. In terms of what the build fixes, it primarily addresses the issues in relation to the lock screen, considering how many users were facing issues when it came to swiping tasks on the lock screen. Some of these issues resulted in the dropping of the notification panel, swiping away of notifications and, at times automatic unlocking of the device. This will no longer occur, thanks to the latest update. Android 12 Beta 2.1: Complete Changelog1. Fixed an issue where after taking Beta and resetting the device, some users are were stuck on setup wizard (Issue #190082536). 2. (Issue #190702454) 3. Fixed an issue that can sometimes cause flickering or jittery animations when accessing recent apps with gesture navigation. 4.
