| Upgrading Your Smartphone Frequently Might No Longer Be a Smart Move Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:30 PM PDT ![]()
Smartphone giants like Samsung, Xiaomi and Apple usually offer one flagship series per year, with the time frame for the launch being either in Q1 or around fall. Most of the time, users hold off on tech purchases and wait for Apple's event which brings along with it the next generation of iPhones, which at times bring better advancements for a slightly cheaper price, at least for the base variant. In India, the tech enthusiast usually works on a two-year upgrade cycle and, in foreign markets wherein mobile carriers play a huge role in your tech purchase, a two-year plan is the most common occurrence, persuading users to shift phones after the commencement of the two years. That being said, in today's day and age, this occurrence is being questioned left and right, considering as to how the pace of smartphone advancement has slowed down, and, for most users who opt for mid-range devices or flagships, software support has been extended to last way longer than two years, especially in the case of Samsung, Vivo and Apple. There are two key reasons that back up our theory, the first of which is in relation to the upgrade cycle itself. The Upgrade Cycle Has Extended Quite A Bit
Despite all the new deals and products, the upgrade cycle itself has lengthened by quite a bit. Past reports from various publications and data collecting sites have revealed that users are much happier than in earlier years to hold on to their handset for longer periods of time. In the United States of America, a market that has great demand for smartphones, 2019 was the lowest dip for two of the country's largest carriers, Verizon and AT&T, with the dip in relation to the smartphones being sold/deals purchased. Another reason for the upgrade cycle lengthening is the seemingly higher software support, at least for flagships. Take for example the iPhone 6s, launched way back in 2015, the device recently got upgraded to iOS 15, a whole 6 years post its launch. Samsung too has started to offer greater software support and, if the user is able to not ruin the smartphone by dropping it or damaging it, going longer than usual on a smartphone's usage cycle is much more feasible than ever before. The Technological Gap is Reducing
In recent years, the consumer trend has also changed. Up until 2017-18, users would wait for the next version of a series of smartphones to know what new features could be added, but in today's day and age, most successors are incremental upgrades, at least for a generation or two. Sometimes it is just a new colour or something different with the back panel, but, that does not last for long and brands are forced to do something new so as to ensure sales, since, if the smartphone is basically quite similar to the older model, why would someone opt for the newer one? Take for example the Samsung Galaxy S21 series of devices. The biggest talking point for the device was the reduced price, which really led to greater sales. The iPhone 12 was a minor rendition that added an OLED screen for all models, 5G and a newer design reminiscent of the older iPhones. Whilst these are upgrades, none of them is a standout, since they have been present on devices launched in the past year, at least on the Android side of things. Foldable smartphones do provide hope, as they keep pushing the boundaries from generation to generation, but, as an overall perspective, smartphone development has, for lack of a better word, become stagnant, with minor upgrades occurring yearly, and something truly amazing coming on a two-three year basis. |
| Snapdragon Insiders Phone Indian Variant Comes With These Features Posted: 10 Jul 2021 07:57 AM PDT ![]()
Snapdragon recently announced a smartphone for the enthusiast crowd, under the name of Snapdragon Insiders, with the device promised to be made available in a number of major smartphone markets, including places such as India and China. Ahead of the launch in August, the device has finally been listed on the Asus online store for both India and China, revealing the pricing for the specific regions, complete with certain downgrades for the Indian market. Overall, the device sold in China and India, under the name of the Snapdragon Insiders Phone or the Smartphone for Snapdragon Insiders, will feature the same specifications as the models on offer in the other markets, meaning consumers will be treated to a whopping 16GB of RAM coupled with 512GB of internal storage. What Do We Know About the Qualcomm Snapdragon Insiders Phone? When it comes to the pricing, as per the listings, the handset will be sold for Rs 111,990 in India, which can be converted to around $1500, which is the same price that the device will be sold for in the U.S. In comparison, the Chinese variant will be sold for $1543, which is a bit more expensive. Whilst this is good news for Indian users who might fancy buying the phone since certain flagships cost a bit more in India when compared to other markets, it is worth noting that certain things will be missing or be deducted by some amounts in India. First off, the phone will be shipped with a slower 30W charger, as the Qualcomm site mentions that it has a 35W charger, which in contrast to other regions is a bit of a letdown, as other markets will get a Quick Charge 5 based 65W charger. The Asus store also fails to mention the pair of premium earbuds amongst items in the box, which mean that they may not be included. Specifications wise, the smartphone includes a 6.78-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen complete with a refresh rate of 144Hz. The device is powered by the Snapdragon 888 processor with a 4000mAh battery that can charge at up to 65W. For optics, the device relies on a 64MP paired with a 13MP secondary camera and a third 8MP camera, for a triple rear camera on the rear, with a 24MP selfie snapper in front. The device also includes stereo speakers, Qualcomm Snapdragon Sound, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC support and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. There is also support for dual SIMs. When the device starts shipping, it will run stock Android 11 out of the box. |

| OnePlus to Debut Flagship Buds Pro Alongside Nord 2 on July 22 Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:13 AM PDT ![]()
OnePlus has been well regarded as an enthusiast brand, specializing in providing more for less, when compared to flagships and expensive handsets. However, despite all this enthusiast-related focus, the company has not been a big audio player in the market, with only two truly wireless options on offer ever since its debut, with only two devices having been launched in 2020. The first of these devices was the OnePlus Buds, which was launched back in July of 2020, followed by the OnePlus Buds Z, launched a couple of months later. Now, it seems that the company might launch a Pro variant of its OnePlus Buds, as part of its OnePlus Buds series of truly wireless earphones. What Did OnePlus Mention In Regards to the OnePlus Buds Pro?In a community post, the company revealed the OnePlus Buds Pro moniker on Saturday, with no mention of any features for the upcoming TWS. The post reads, are you excited about the upcoming oneplus Nord 2 5G launch? We bet you didn't know the new instalment of the Nord series would be accompanied by the yet-to-be-announced buds pro! do you wish to test them both? well, you might have to wait less than you expected. The Buds Pro could be the costliest TWS offering from the brand ever since its inception, with expectations of the truly wireless earbuds featuring ANC or Active Noise Cancellation. There have been no leaks regarding the product, however, with no report of it passing through the certification site, so we have no idea as to how they might look. With OnePlus planning to launch the OnePlus Nord 2 5G on July 22, we could see the OnePlus Buds Pro launching on the same day. In case you did not know, a recent community post from OnePlus stated that along with the launch of the Nord 2 5G, throughout the year the company will be sharing a lot of info with the fans addressed in relation to upcoming cool stuff from the Nord team, exclusive content, fun events you can participate in, and a rolling ambassador program that gives the select few exclusive privileges and access to Nord devices and swag! Certain perks for Nord ambassadors would be a new Nord device for free, every time the company will launch a new phone. Free swag with every launch, shoutouts through Nord social media, and a lot more, the announcement added. |
| Apple Sales Might Get Hurt in South Korea as LG Drops Plans of Partnership Posted: 10 Jul 2021 06:00 AM PDT ![]()
LG, the South Korean tech giant, might be a winner in other markets comprising of TVs and other electronics but hasn't had much luck when it comes to smartphones. This had led to LG talking with Apple regarding selling Apple phones through the LG stores. While South Korean Apple buyers might have been excited about this development, there were several parties that were not happy with this news. As per the latest development in the stories, it seems that LG might be undoing previous promises made regarding the sales of Apple devices from its stores. Pressure Mounting on LG From Multiple SidesThere has been pressure on LG from multiple sides. AppleInsider reported that the major pressure was from the small and medium-sized retailers who showed a lot of concern on the fact that LG was about to sell Apple devices in its store. Not only this, LG had gone ahead with providing training to some of its employees who were to sell Apple devices in these said stores. But as it happens, LG has now called back these employees of the Best Shop store and is no longer providing them training to sell Apple devices. Samsung Skeptical About LG Apple PartnershipThe pressure on LG does not only seem to be mounting from its own retailers but also from the government of South Korea, which is concerned about competition. As per an IANS report, the South Korean government had objected to LG when it came ahead with the news of selling Apple Devices. There is also something to lose for Samsung if this goes through. South Korea, which is the homeland of Samsung, would face stiff competition from Apple if LG and Apple were to partner up to sell devices. It is worth noting that LG had remarked about withdrawing from the smartphone business in April, and it was in June when the electronics company declared its intentions of partnering up with Apple. |

| Apple Might Do Something It Has Never Done Before Posted: 10 Jul 2021 02:35 AM PDT ![]()
Apple is known for its innovative and premium offerings. Earlier this year, we saw the launch of the iPhone 12 series, which ruled the market soon after the launch. Now, Apple is gearing up to launch multiple products this year. The new iPhone 13 series and a new iPad Mini is expected to be launched in the global market. However, the Cupertino giant is also planning to launch a device that it planned to launch back in 2019. However, the product was not launched due to technical setbacks. AirPower Was Not Achevieing High StandardsTracing back to 2019, Dan Riccio, Apple Senior VP of Hardware Engineering, stated that after investing ample efforts, Apple has come to the conclusion that AirPower will not achieve the high standards and the project will be cancelled. The device was first announced back in 2017 during a launch event. However, technical roadblocks forced Apple to drop the launch idea. Apple is Working on a Device Similar to AirPowerAs mentioned in a Bloomberg report, Apple is working on a device with similar specifications and features like AirPower. The sources also revealed to the publication that the charging mat which Apple is currently working on would be compatible with Apple Watch, iPhone and AirPods. Apple users will just have to place their device over the charging mat, and the charging will start without any wire. Apple has not limited the range of the device that could work with AirPower. Apart from iPhones, Apple Watch and AirPods will also work with the charging mat. Users will also be able to charge two devices at the same period. Apple has Not Given Up on AirPowerEven though Apple dropped the idea of launching the charging mat in 2019, it has not given up completely on the device. Renowned tipster Jon Prosser stated that the Apple AirPower project is still under the development process. The AirPower, which was announced back in 2017, faced multiple issues with charging coils. Apple was even working on heating issues. If the recent reports are true, we can expect that Apple will launch the AirPower this year. |
| Supreme Court Denies Transfer of Petition Against New IT Rules in Various HCs Posted: 10 Jul 2021 12:30 AM PDT ![]()
As the queue of companies, social media giants, and various media bodies form in front of the High Courts against the new IT Rules issued by the IT ministry, the centre has come up with its own rebuttal. The centre approached the SC asking for a transfer of all the petitions being filed across the country in various high courts to the Supreme Court. The government also asked for a stay in the proceedings which were ongoing regarding the new IT rules and its opposition. However, the SC has denied the centre this privilege and has not stopped any petition proceedings so far. Twitter Moving Ahead with Compliance OfficerThe most that the SC has done for the centre is that it has tagged the plea for the transfer petition with the said special leave petition. It is worth noting that the new IT rules have caused a lot of havoc in the media circles. With the word "intermediary" being in the most negative limelight. Twitter has been one social media company that has been in open defiance with the law since the beginning. However, finally, even Twitter seems to be coming around to this as it has talked about appointing compliance, grievance and nodal officer soon with the job listing out now. NBA Now Opposing New IT RulesIn the latest development, the News Broadcasters Association which includes hotshots from the current affairs broadcasting industry has also filed a writ petition in the Kerala HC against the new IT rules. In the petition, it was noted that the new IT rules are violative of some of the foundational values of the Constitution which are Article 19(1)(a) and 19(1)(g) granting freedom of speech and freedom to practise and profession. The petition also highlighted the rules being violative of the parent IT Act as well. Now it remains to be seen how the upper court takes up the proceedings in this regard. |
| Vodafone Idea Turns to $3 Billion of Private Equity Funding for Solving Cash Crunch Posted: 09 Jul 2021 11:24 PM PDT ![]()
Vodafone Idea has been handed the short end of the stick when it comes to finances in the telecom industry. Already the tariffs are skewed towards the lower end of the spectrum, thus burning holes in the pockets of the telecom companies. Of course, some are better prepared to take the brunt, but Vodafone Idea was certainly not. The telecom company is now looking towards Private Equity investors, Apollo Global Management, to get some funding into their telecom business. However, as is the case with all fundraising plans, there are a lot of ifs and buts which need to be answered before Vodafone Idea is able to infuse cash into its business. Vodafone Idea Funding Now a Tricky RoadApollo Global Management is likely to demand a heavy stake in the business if the deal goes through. As for the amount in the discussion, if the talks have a breakthrough, then Vodafone Idea might get funding worth $3 billion (Rs 22,400 crore). As per an ET Telecom report, Apollo Global Management is drilling Vodafone Idea on points of business valuation, the structure of the funding, among other terms. It is worth noting that Vodafone Idea previously had plans of getting fundraisers with a mix of equity infusion and debt instruments. However, those plans have likely been tossed away as Vodafone Idea is relying on a single source for its funding now, and currently, that appears to be Apollo Global Management. Vi Also Likely to Sell Its Broadband BusinessCurrently, the UK based company Vodafone Group Plc and the Aditya Birla Group together own 44.39% and 27.66%, respectively, in Vi as its co-promoters. It is also quite likely that given the position of the telco, Apollo is likely to ask for corporate guarantees from both the co-promoters, which they would most likely not be in favour of. Vodafone Idea has somewhere around Rs 22,500 crore to pay in dues which include debt, AGR and spectrum allocation payments. In other news, Vodafone Idea has been known to be in talks about selling its wired broadband service, optic fibre business and data centre business as well to solve its cash crunch. |
| BharatNet Service Quality Row Might Spark Concerns for PM-WANI Posted: 09 Jul 2021 09:30 PM PDT ![]()
Even before the country is ready for 5G services, the high-speed fiber in every corner of the country, the talks of PM-WANI are rife in the crowds roaming the streets of the pandemic-stricken country. However, as the news of the PM-WANI scheme fills the columns of many newspapers and websites, there is another project of the government which has been in the headlines for some of the wrong reasons, and that project is BharatNet. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) launched the BharatNet project with an ambitious target of connecting 2.5 lakh panchayats all over the country, connecting 6 lakh villages, but this project has been targeted by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India for its modest lack of quality. CAG Slams CSC On Poor Implementation of BharatNetThe highest financial office in the country, which audits the expenses of the government, CAG, has dealt a blow to DoT and CSC both with regards to the poor service, the slow rollout, and multiple issues which have plagued the BharatNet project. To recall, the BharatNet project was slated to be completed by 2019, but by then, only a handful of panchayats had been connected. Not only this but the stakeholder responsible for the rollout of BharatNet in the villages and ensuring last-mile connectivity was the CSC, which was also issued Rs 386.42 crore and 116.50 crores between 2019 and 2020, in addition to the funding ensured originally to the project. Despite this, problems went awry between VLE (Village Level Entrepreneurs) and BBNL, who is responsible for providing equipment to the VLEs and Digital Seva Kendras. These VLEs have been given the job of extending the internet to the last mile in the villages. It is worth noting that the structure of the stakeholders in this project is quite complex as BharatNet also draws funds from the USOF or the Univeral Service Obligation Fund. In its report, as per ET Telecom, CAG also remarked that USOF is only relying on the data provided by the CSC and has no capability to slap fine on CSC. Present Deadline Also Not Quite OptimisticNot only this, but the CSCs have been found to be unable to supply 10 Mbps of speed to the village panchayats. With the present scenario, the dream of the government to have a robust public-private partnership on top of a high-speed broadband network running through most villages of the country seems to be in grave danger. Even with the latest developments, the August 2021 deadline for the BharatNet project seems to be far fetched. However, the dangers are not just limited to the lack of connectivity in village panchayats, but the fear of administrative inefficiencies, lacklustre implementation of SPVs, mainly BBNL in this regard, and other discrepancies may creep into another project of PM-WANI. Hence, there is the danger that what has happened in the 6 lakh villages might be repeated in the urban streets as a failed public Wi-Fi hotspot scheme with abysmal infrastructure and poor speeds might deny the interest of private investments in these projects and might also create a whirlpool of data users who rely on freebies too often. Not only this, but the current discrepancies might translate into lapses of security and privacy in the networks that are meant to be deployed in cities under PM-WANI and in villages under BharatNet. |
| Here’s How You Can Fix the ‘Cannot Download’ File Issue on Chromebooks Posted: 09 Jul 2021 08:00 PM PDT ![]()
Chromebooks have a reputation in the regular crowd of being overpriced laptops in India, but in reality, they are massively handy products that are more than useful for your day to day operations. ChromeOS, the proprietory software for Chromebooks, is also quite useful when it comes to doing such tasks, no matter how intensive the task might be. Since Chromebooks integrate with the Google cloud like a charm, working seems that much easier when compared to, say, a Mac or a Windows-based laptop. One issue that is quite persistent is the issue of Chromebooks integrating with Google cloud services, which should actually make it much easier to work. There is a fix to this particular issue, which we will be listing out as of now. Even if you are logged into your Google account, and your internet connection is working like a charm, if you fail to download a file from the driver, the following steps might help. Do note that prior to this process, for it to work well, one needs a Chromebook associated with their own Google account. If you have such a Chromebook, then follow the given steps. How to Fix Cannot Download File IssueStep 1: Log into your Chromebook and open the Chrome browser. Step 2: Ensure that you are logged into your account. Step 3: In the address bar type down – chrome://settings/cookies Step 4: Next, scroll down to the Sites That Can Always Use Cookies section, after which you will need to click on the Add option; you should see a popup. Step 5: On the pop-up, type the following text- drive.google.com Step 6: Ensure that you check the box so as to include third-party cookies on this site. Step 7: Finally, click on Add. This will allow your Google Drive to make use of cookies on your Chromebook. Furthermore, as soon as the user follows these steps, the next time they try to download a file from the drive, it should happen without any such issues. The solution is pretty basic, and one would hope that it would be built into or integrated into ChromeOS by default, but on the other hand, it is quite good as it allows the user to select whether or not to allow the use of cookies, on a per-site basis. In case you did not know, Chromebooks as a concept are quite interesting, with Google stating that they are a new type of computer designed to get things done easier and faster-using Chrome OS, an OS that makes use of cloud storage and emphasizes security. |
| Bharti Airtel Is Giving 1GB Data for Rs 3 Only Posted: 09 Jul 2021 06:34 PM PDT ![]()
Bharti Airtel is known for charging a 'premium' on its prepaid plans to differentiate its services from India's top telecom operator Reliance Jio. Airtel strives to add more high average revenue per user (ARPU) customers to its bag so that it can have all the 'quality' customers who are not afraid to pay for premium services. Regardless, the telco offers a very economical prepaid plan where the users get 1GB of data for approximately Rs 3. Given the data rates, it is very cheap for anyone. Let's take a look at which plan of the company offers users 1GB of data for Rs 3. Bharti Airtel Plan That Gives 1GB of Data for Rs 3 OnlyBharti Airtel offers a Rs 558 plan to the users. This plan comes with 3GB daily data, unlimited voice calling, and 100 SMS/day. It carries a validity of 56 days. The total data that a user receives from the plan is 168GB. This means that each GB of data costs only Rs 3.32. This is as cheap as one can expect data to be in India. Most surprisingly, this isn't from Reliance Jio or Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), but Bharti Airtel, which is known for providing slightly expensive prepaid plans. Along with the above-mentioned data, users are also eligible to get Airtel Thanks benefits from the company, which include Amazon Prime Video Mobile Edition, Airtel Xstream Premium, Free Hellotunes, Wynk Music, Apollo 24/7 Circle, One year of Shaw Academy, and a Rs 100 cashback on FASTag transaction. Even though this plan would require the user to shell out Rs 558 for only 56 days, the amount of data the user is getting with this plan more than covers up for it. On top of the data benefit, the additional benefits offered by the plan also make a huge difference. In comparison, Airtel's top competitor, Reliance Jio, doesn't offer a 56 days prepaid plan that offers 3GB daily data. Jio users can choose from 28, 84, and 365 days 3GB daily data plans. At the same time, Vi's plan comes for 601 and offers 3GB daily data for 56 days which is expensive than Airtel's plan. But, the Vi users also get bonus data and one year of Disney+ Hotstar VIP benefit, which makes it a very compelling offer. It is frankly strange to see Jio not even caring about the 56 days 3GB daily data plan, but let's leave it at that because there must be a good reason for it. |
