iPhone SE 3rd Gen Sporting A14 Bionic Chip Might Launch in 2022 Posted: 19 Jul 2021 08:30 AM PDT Cupertino-giant Apple had launched the iPhone SE 2020 last year, bringing back to SE moniker that was first spotted on the original iPhone SE, which debuted in 2016. It was responsible for bringing back the smaller form factor that became increasingly uncommon owing to the hype around larger devices. The 2020 SE did the same thing as the OG version, as it became a welcome change in the world of larger handsets that became too much to handle, feeling more like a tablet rather than a smartphone. Now it seems that Apple might unveil a third-generation iPhone SE in 2022. A new report released by MacRumors, which cites famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's investor note, has claimed that Apple could unveil the iPhone SE 3 during the first half of 2022. The analyst further shared additional details on the design and specifications that could be on offer for the next small iPhone. iPhone SE 3rd Gen Expected Release DateFurther reports by GizChina suggest that the iPhone SE could make use of the A14 Bionic chipset which is found on the iPhone 12 series of devices. This will be an upgrade considering how the iPhone SE 2020 was released with the A13 Bionic chipset. Another MacRumors report, that cites analyst Kuo, claimed that Apple will be retaining the iPhone SE 2020's design for the successor. This basically means that the device will opt to make use of a Home button for Touch ID and will probably sport thick bezels at the top and bottom of the display, which in 2022 might look extremely outdated. The device will also be showcased as the cheapest 5G iPhone ever, which should mean that the pricing will be competitive, as, in the current portfolio, the cheapest 5G smartphone is the iPhone 12 Mini, which retails at $699, meaning that the SE3 will most likely cost less, with a probable rate of $599. We could see the third-gen iPhone SE launch during the first half of 2022, meaning a launch can be expected in April or March of 2022, with chances of a launch during WWDC 2022, which usually takes place in the month of June. Kuo had also stated earlier that Apple could launch a 6-inch iPhone complete with an LCD display with support for Face ID. The device will feature 5G network support and should be a part of the SE family. This particular device could launch in 2023, which is a bit far away.
Windows 11 October Release Date Revealed by Leaked Document Posted: 19 Jul 2021 07:15 AM PDT There have been multiple reports surrounding the launch date of the latest version of Windows, Windows 11, which brings with it multiple appearance-based changes to the operating system. To date, there have been many reports, but the sources for these reports have been far less credible. Now, as per a leaked Intel document, it seems that the next version of Windows could launch in the month of October, at which points users will be free to download the same. In case you did not know, as of now, Windows 11 is on offer, but via the Windows Insider program, which provides users with an early build, which, at the point of release, will be released in the same month. Is Windows 11 Releasing in October 2021?Do note that for the final version to be released, Microsoft to date has mentioned that the update will be released in Fall. For those of you unaware, Windows 11 is the biggest upgrade for PCs and laptops since the launch of Windows 10 in 2015. It was announced in the month of May that the update would be rolled out in the upcoming months. As mentioned above, a new report from Windows Latest showcases Intel’s release notes for a GPU driver that references the Windows 11 OS, which hints that it could be released as part of an update in the month of October 2021 for devices that are eligible. As of now, Microsoft has not released beta builds, which should start rolling out later this month. Microsoft labels its major updates with the year and the 'half' when it was released, such as the October 2020 release, which was dubbed 20H2, whilst the October 2021 update is expected to be called the 21H2 update. The report further explains that the DCH GPU driver version 30.0.100.9684 hints at Windows 11's October update. A Microsoft employee had previously mentioned that the upcoming version of Windows would bear the same format in terms of updates, so users should expect to see the same versions such as 22H1 and 22H2 next year. Do remember that Windows 11 is most likely not going to be compatible with most PCs thanks to the new hardware requirements that are set by Microsoft, meaning that many users might be left out of the upgrade, but, to keep such users happy, Microsoft has promised updates for Windows 10 till 2025. For those of you wondering about what to expect from Windows 11, we have covered the changes that are a part of the latest update, so one can check the same to know what to expect from the next major update of Windows.
Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to Both See Lukewarm Growth in FY22 Q1 Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:20 AM PDT The numbers are in from the analysts about the telecom industry's growth and subscriber addition along with revenue in recent times, and it appears that the telecom companies have not been able to beat the lockdown. Despite the talk of heavy data usage for work from home and online classes, it seems that the telecom companies, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea, will see lukewarm responses in terms of subscriber addition and revenues both. The predictions that we are talking about referring to the first quarter of FY22. The multiple ripple effect which carries from last year still persists. However, the local lockdowns have added to the telecom woes, which have worsened with stagnant sales of new smartphones and free recharges, which became the norm given the low-income household situations. Subscriber Growth to Slow DownTo recall, 2020 and part of 2021 have been tainted with the free recharges, which a lot of telecom companies have handed over to their subscribers to stay connected in the pandemic. As per JM Financial, the ARPU growth will remain "subdued" in Q1 FY22, similar to the first quarter of the last financial year. The firm also noted that most of the subscriber addition have happened in the June 2021 month on the back of the reopening of markets and the economy, since that's when people started buying recharges again along with new smartphones. Similar to this, in FY22, Bharti Airtel is expected to add 2 million new subscribers, whereas Reliance Jio has been predicted to add 8 million subscribers. At the same time, Vodafone Idea will likely churn out 7 million subscribers from its base.Revenue Growth Also Shy of Huge NumbersAs for the revenue growth, ICICI Securities, another financial firm, reported that Reliance Jio would witness appreciable growth of 3.8% QoQ on the back of strong JioPhone sales and the JioPhone plans which were introduced in 2021. Whereas, for Bharti Airtel, the same figure will likely be at 1.5% QoQ. On the other hand, Vodafone Idea's revenue might be seen slipping by 1.4% QoQ. Overall, the performance of the telco is going to be shying away from high numbers because of the slow smartphone sales, lockdown and the free recharges handed over to middle-class households.
OneWeb Intends to Locally Develop and Source Key Satcom Equipment Posted: 19 Jul 2021 06:10 AM PDT OneWeb, the Bharti Global-backed satellite comms company on Monday told the Department of Telecommunications, better known as the DoT that it would be opting for local sourcing and development of its key satellite communication equipment, which will consist of low-cost user-access terminals coupled with gateway ground station infrastructure that will be used to construct a domestic satellite devices-and-components ecosystem in India. This report comes via ET Telecom, to whom a person aware of the talks mentioned that OneWeb had assured DoT secretary Anshu Prakash it would support local satcom gear makers and was talking to several homegrown players to allow for indigenous sourcing. This detail was supposedly communicated amidst a meeting presented on ways to make a roadmap to allow for the making of satellite network equipment in India. What Do We Know About the DoT MeetingIn case you were wondering, OneWeb is a low earth orbit satellite communications company that is getting ready to compete with Elon Musk's Starlink as well as Amazon-backed Project Kuiper, both of which are related to the high-speed broadband-from-space segment. Senior OneWeb executives who were at the DoT meeting have called on the government to rapidly increase the pace of landing rights approvals that are pending, so as to enable the company to set up local ground stations as well as bring its satellite spectrum in the Ka/Ku or 28 Ghz/14 Ghz bands to the country so as to ensure the timely rollout of satellite broadband services by May 2022. For those of you unaware, landing rights and market access are key to downstream OneWeb's global bandwidth capacity for satellite broadband users in India. The company has previously identified land that will be used to set up two local satellite ground stations in northern and southern India with the aim to start work once the company has the landing rights. During the meeting, OneWeb also urged the DoT to bring a single-window clearance mechanism when it comes to the issuing of satellite service permits that include the likes of GMPCS/VSAT, with the company also pushing for sharper cuts in high regulatory costs for satcoms services, with the intention to make satellite broadband services affordable with better penetration. The Director-General of the Satcom Industry Association of India or SIA-India, Anil Prakas added that all services related to satellites require permissions from multiple government authorities, be it for licences, orbital positions, spectrum allocations, and such decision-making at each level invariably add to a delay and increase the cost for satcom operators.
Telefonica Joins Hands With KKR to Deploy Open Access Fibre Across Columbia Posted: 19 Jul 2021 05:59 AM PDT KKR, a prominent global investment firm that has its arms spanning across multiple countries like in FiberCop in Italy, HyperOptic in the UK, and Open Dutch Fibre in the Netherlands, will now invest in Telefonica, Columbia. With this deal, KKR hopes to establish the first nationwide wholesale infrastructure company of Columbia. As per this new agreement signed between the global investment firm and the Columbian company, KKR will invest a big chunk in Telefonica and will carve out a separate entity in which KKR will be the majority shareholder. On the flipside, with Telefonica as a minority shareholder, both of them will carve out an open-access network through a newly established independent entity. Open Access Fibre to be Centre of Attraction In the DealVery recently, both the companies have come together to deploy ON*NET Fibra as the first open-access wholesale fibre optic network in Chile. Also Grupo Telefónica has announced another joint venture with CDPQ, FiBrasil Infraestructura e Fibra Ótica (FiBrasil). It is worth noting that back in 2019, Telefonica had put out an agenda regarding its business in the Latin American region. This highlighted that Telefonica would be looking towards partnerships as its preferred mode of business in the region.Fibre to Serve Underserved Areas of ColumbiaWith the investment from KKR Telefonica's open-access fibre network would be able to expand connectivity from 1.2 million homes today to at least 4.3 million homes by the end of 2024. This coverage is substantial since it will be covering 87 municipal areas of Columbia, with a lot of them being underserved and unserved. The open-access network would mean that the joint venture company would be able to sell its services to other telecom companies in the region. Even the retail arm of Telefonica would be able to extend the services to the end consumers. Waldemar Szlezak, a senior leader of KKR’s infrastructure investment remarked that the investment firm is thrilled to join hands with Telefonica to build this open access fibre network. KKR will also be taking help from Scotiabank and Bank Street as financial co-advisors in this venture.

AGR Case: SC Won’t Allow Recalculation of Dues, Vodafone Idea In a Bad Place Posted: 19 Jul 2021 04:30 AM PDT The Supreme Court has today said that it wouldn't allow re-computation or re-calculation of the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. However, if there's any rectification that needs to be done, it might be allowed (this didn't come directly from the SC). It is worth noting that the apex court had said that it wouldn't allow reassessment of the dues; however, it didn't say that if any errors are there, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) can't correct it. This was pointed out by the Tata Tele counsel, Arvind Datar. Vodafone Idea Says About to Go UnderAs per CNBC, the AGR hearing started once the three justices, including Justice LN Rao, Justice Abdul Nazeer, and Justice MR Shah was available. Mukul Rohatgi representing Vodafone Idea (Vi), said that there are arithmetic errors in the calculation of dues by the DoT. Rohtagi shared an actual entry as an example where Vi had paid Rs 155 crores to the telecom department, but the DoT's payments only reflected Rs 153 crores. In a desperate statement, Rohtagi shared that Vi is about to go under if its debt of Rs 1.8 lakh crores is not addressed and requested the court to place the telco's calculations in front of the DoT and let the department take the final call. Bharti Airtel, represented by Abhishek M. Singhvi, said there are payments made to the department which are not accounted for and cases of duplication of dues assessed by the DoT. Singhvi said that the telco is only looking for the DoT to address the errors so that it doesn't have to pay thousands of crores extra. Arvind Datar said AGR has to be in accordance with the law, just as taxes and fees. The older SC judgement says the AGR amount can't be reassessed, but the order doesn't say that errors can't be rectified. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that it would be 'hazardous' for him to make any statement without talking with the DoT. SG Mehta has sought for two days time to check with DoT if the errors can be rectified. During the hearing, the SC said that it had said not once but thrice that the AGR amount won't be reassessed. Thus one thing's clear; there isn't going to be any recalculation of the said amount.

Nokia Inks Deal With Taiwan Star Telecom to Extend 5G Footprint Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:36 AM PDT Nokia on Monday announced that it had been selected by Taiwan Star Telecom or TST in order to extend the 5G footprint held by the TST in the country. Nokia has long been a partner of TST with the intention this time to provide equipment from the latest 5G AirScale portfolio that will support TST's 5G standalone/SA network with faster deployment time and seamless integration. Nokia will be supplying equipment via its AirScale portfolio with the intention to meet a variety of deployment scenarios. This will include the company’s enhanced, next-generation AirScale Indoor or ASiR system that is aimed at retail and office environments. Why is This Collaboration Important? The compact, flexible indoor system has been designed keeping in mind the simplicity and seamlessly upgradability to 5G NR through plug-and-play that requires minimal on-site work. TST will also be utilizing the EN-DC functionality that is on offer on Nokia's AirScale radios. In case you were wondering, EN-DC allows for devices to be connected to 5G and LTE networks simultaneously, transmitting and receiving data across the two air-interface technologies listed. What this means is that devices are able to get higher throughput in comparison to connecting to 5G or LTE alone. TST's 5G SA network will allow for the full potential of 5G by unlocking new services that include Voice over 5G New Radio or VoNR that can be used for better call services. Nokia's 5G portfolio will add to this a simple migration path and provide faster deployment for TST. TST had launched 5G services in 2020, utilizing the 40 MHz of bandwidth in the 3.5GHz band that it had secured. The initial deployment was of about 80% coverage in densely populated areas in 2020 with 100% in Taiwan expected to be covered by around 2023. Statistically, TST’s 5G subscriptions had reached around 5% of the total mobile users last year, with a target of reaching 20% by the end of 2021. The President of Taiwan Star Telecom, Cliff Lai stated that it was imperative that the customers receive the best possible 5G services in terms of performance and coverage. TST’s continuing partnership with Nokia will see the company expand and enhance its 5G offering ensuring that users receive best-in-class experiences. The President of Mobile Networks, Nokia, Tommi Uitto added that the company was delighted to continue its journey with Taiwan Star Telecom as a 5G vendor. This was an important project that will see Nokia support TST’s expanded delivery of 5G services to even more areas across the country.
India Saw Average Mobile Downloading Speed of 17.84 Mbps in June: Ookla Posted: 19 Jul 2021 01:07 AM PDT Indian telecom operators have been working non-stop during the pandemic to ensure that users stay connected with their loved ones and colleagues without any interruptions. India has continuously been improving the average download speed that it offers to users, be it with a mobile internet connection or a fixed broadband connection. As per the Ookla report, Indians got an average mobile downloading speed of 17.84 Mbps in the month of June 2021. Not Only Mobile Internet Speed, But Fixed Broadband Speed Also ImprovedIndia jumped 6 positions higher in June for providing the best average mobile downloading speed to the users and is now at the 122nd rank globally. As for the fixed broadband downloading speeds, India jumped 3 positions and now stands at the 70th position. The average downloading speed offered by mobile networks and the fixed broadband connections was 17.84 Mbps and 58.17 Mbps, respectively. India has been consistently going up in the ranks for the last two months. In comparison to June, India's average mobile downloading speed in May was 15.34 Mbps, and fixed broadband internet speed was 55.65 Mbps. This is significant growth and a positive sign for the telecom industry. At the top of the list stood UAE which offered users an average mobile internet downloading speed of 193.51 Mbps. Even though India's numbers are not that impressive when compared with what UAE offered to the users, it is assuring to see that India has been consistently making progress. For getting accurate information about the downloading speeds, Ookla uses the data it collects in real-time from real users who are using the 'Speedtest' app every month to check their internet speed. With continued investments in 4G networks and fibre broadband by the telcos, India is likely to grow further in offering better average downloading speeds to the users.

BSNL VRS Helped the Telco In Lowering Losses Posted: 18 Jul 2021 10:40 PM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has narrowed its loss to Rs 7,441.11 crores in the financial year ending March 31, 2021. The state-run telco had posted a loss of Rs 15,499.58 crores in FY20. This means that BSNL has been successful in lowering losses by approximately 50%. According to a PTI report, a BSNL official said that the telco's losses have come down mainly because of the voluntary retirement scheme (VRS) opted by 78,569 employees. BSNL's Revenue from Operations Declined in FY21The state-run telco's revenue from operations declined in FY21 by 1.6% to Rs 18,595.12 crore against the Rs 18,906.56 crore in the preceding financial year. This has also affected BSNL's net worth in a negative manner. The telco's net worth has slipped from 59,139.82 crores in FY20 to Rs 51,686.8 crore in FY21, which is a worrying sign. At the same time, BSNL's outstanding debt has increased from Rs 21,674.74 crore in FY20 to Rs 27,033.6 crore in FY21. While the telco's debt is increasing, its revenue from operations is slipping. The lowering net worth is just a sign that if things remain the way they are, BSNL might be looking at a very gruesome future. The telco's 4G plans surface every now and then, but there's no real action. BSNL has the capacity to grow, but for that, its 4G plans will have to be sped up, without which it will become a telecom operator only serving customers who want to stay on legacy networks. The day these customers start shifting to new generation networks', BSNL's role in the Indian telecom industry will be over. The hybrid 4G plans proposed by the telco is a very clever one, but there's been no major progress on it for quite some time now. It shouldn't take this much time for the telco and the government to start with the 4G plans of the company.
Bharti Airtel Wants 5G Smartphones to Support Existing Spectrum Bands Posted: 18 Jul 2021 09:45 PM PDT Bharti Airtel wants all the Indian 5G smartphones to support all the existing spectrum bands. The telco has expressed this to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) via a letter as reported by the Financial Express. Airtel wants the telecom department to ensure that any 5G smartphone that's sold in India must support all the existing spectrum bands. This includes both the smartphones that have already launched and the one's that will launch in the future. Why Does Bharti Airtel Want All Spectrum Band Support for 5G Smartphones in India?First of all, note that the Indian market has already started flooding with new 5G smartphones in 2021. While there were a few 5G smartphones launched in 2020, the numbers have increased significantly in 2021. But there's an issue with some smartphones. There are 5G devices that don't support all the existing spectrum bands. This means that even if the telecom operators, including Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi), comes out with 5G networks in different spectrum bands in the future, these smartphones might not be able to support it. This would render the 5G smartphones totally useless for the user. Further, this will impact the revenues of the telcos who have invested a lot in developing 5G solutions and purchasing equipment for upgrading the network since there will be very less little users actually purchasing 5G plans. Smartphones such as OnePlus Nord CE 5G and the OnePlus 9 series can only support one and two 5G bands. Even though the 5G bands supported by these smartphones will be useful for the user, they won't allow them to experience the full potential of 5G networks. Even the old spectrum bands which are currently used for 4G should be supported by these smartphones. This will ensure that if the telcos come out with 5G services using 4G spectrum bands, all the devices will be able to support 5G.
Apple May Finally Bring Always-On-Display to the iPhone 13 Posted: 18 Jul 2021 08:13 PM PDT Apple seems to be aiming to build on the success that the iPhone 12 series of devices were subject to, with plans to make big changes to the 2021 version of the iPhone, which, as per reports, could make use of a smaller notch, offer better performance, sport larger batteries and, displays that are at par with competitors such as Samsung and Huawei. It seems that Apple is also working on an always-on-mode for the iPhone 13 series of devices, a feature that was added to the Apple Watch Series 6 in 2020 post increased demand by consumers. Could Apple Finally Offer AoD Functionality on the iPhone? In the latest publication of the weekly Power On newsletter, famed Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman has specified what customers will be able to expect from the 2021 iPhone. As per Gurman, the new iPhones will supposedly opt for larger batteries that can be used to power displays that sport a 120Hz refresh rate and an Apple Watch-inspired always-on mode, which sits in line with leaked battery capacities, In case you missed it, with the recent Apple watch model, the display can be used at a lower brightness and variable refresh rate, which can allow the users to see their watch face at all times without having any major impact on the battery. Gurman has added that Apple might bring it to the 2021 iPhone, which can allow consumers to see the time, date and notifications. This might be made possible due to LTPO displays which are designed to efficiently ensure that the display is on at a lower brightness time, without any sort of major impact on battery life. The OLED LTPO displays are rumoured to be included in the top-end iPhone 13 models will also allow for the inclusion of 120Hz refresh rate panels, which is not surprising as Apple has been long-rumoured to use its 120Hz ProMotion technology for its ?iPhone?, something that did not happen on the iPhone 12 but it seems the iPhone 13 could finally opt for the same. The dummy models of the iPhone 13 lineup have revealed minor design changes, as Apple had recently reintroduced the flat-edged design for the iPhone, with the iPhone 13 supposedly building on the same, but, the new iPhones could be thicker and heavier to make use of the better displays and larger batteries. Certain other improvements could be in areas of cameras, performance and better displays.
JioFiber Annual Plan Available for Less Than Rs 5,000 Posted: 18 Jul 2021 06:33 PM PDT If you are looking for a broadband plan, one of the top choices right now for you in India is JioFiber. The company is expanding its services throughout the country in a very aggressive manner, especially since the time pandemic kicked in. JioFiber is one of the best companies you can purchase a broadband plan from because of multiple reasons, including great quality service, a good customer care team that can resolve your problems very fast, economic plans, and consistent speeds. If you are looking for a broadband plan that you can get for a whole year and doesn't also burn a hole in your pocket, there's a plan that doesn't even cost Rs 5,000. JioFiber Annual Plan That Won't Burn a Hole In Your PocketThe plan that I am talking about is the 30 Mbps entry-level plan which only costs Rs 399 per month. However, if users take it on a yearly basis, they will only have to pay Rs 4,788 for it. The speeds offered by this plan is symmetrical, which means you will get the same download and upload speed. To make the offer even sweeter, JioFiber is offering 30 days of extra service with the plan. The plan is originally supposed to offer 360 days of validity to the users. However, now it will come for 390 days, which means that users are getting 30 days of service for free from the company. Not only this, but users will also get a free landline connection from the company through which they can make unlimited calls. Note that the price mentioned above is exclusive of GST, and the final price that you will pay will be Rs 4,788 + 18% GST which is Rs 5,649.84. This is one of the cheapest broadband plans you can get in India from any internet service provider (ISP). The company doesn't offer over-the-top (OTT) benefits with its entry-level plans, but that is totally understandable. For an average user, even 30 Mbps downloading speed is very good, and with great uptime of the connection, it becomes even better. JioFiber also offers more plans for long-term validities and is giving 30 days of bonus service with each of them. You can get plans ranging from 30 Mbps to 1 Gbps with OTT benefits such as Netflix Premium subscription, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar VIP and more. Further, users can also claim their free Set-Top Box (STB) from the company and enjoy all the OTT content directly on their TVs seamlessly.

The numbers are in from the analysts about the telecom industry's growth and subscriber addition along with revenue in recent times, and it appears that the telecom companies have not been able to beat the lockdown.
