Apple’s Spatial Audio and Lossless Is Finally Available on Android

Posted: 23 Jul 2021 12:40 PM PDT

Apple Spatial Audio Apple Music has been the Cupertino Giant's take on music streaming and, with this platform, the company offers some audio features that make it worth the shift to iOS or macOS. But now, it seems that the need to shift to iOS to enjoy the exact same features might not be required, as Apple Music listeners on Android will now be able to take advantage of the Dolby Atmos based Spatial Audio and lossless-quality streaming quality. The feature debuted on macOS, iPadOS and iOS, a month ago. The latest Android update adds support for both.

Apple Lossless and Spatial Audio on Android!

For those of you wondering, Lossless audio should be available to almost all Android handsets. Apple does provide the same sort of warnings as it does on iOS, such as the use of significantly more data on lossless. Much like on the Apple handsets, the company also advises the use of external hardware such as DACs to enjoy hi-res lossless audio. Do note that Spatial Audio on Android seems to be very limited in comparison, as the feature does seem to work with almost all headphones, as is the case with iPhones, but, Apple states that there is the need for Dolby Atmos support to enable the same. On the Pixel 4A 5G, there is no option for the Dolby Atmos amidst the audio section of Apple Music's settings on the app. There are certain flagships that have support for the same, so it will vary from handset to handset. It is interesting to note that the beta version of Apple Music for Android had tipped off the support for lossless and hi-res audio before an official announcement, but the same is now finally being offered on the Apple Music app for Android. This comes after Apple announced that it was finally going to offer the two new features in India, with the features allowing users to opt for enhanced audio quality given the sort of music being listened to. The only requirement is that of the right equipment to make use of the technology. When it comes to how you can turn it on, there are two methods to do the same, either via the iPhone or the Mac. For anyone wondering, on the iPhone, users can make use of the same by starting the Settings app>Tapping on the audio quality option.

Confused About the OnePlus Nord 2, Here Are Your Top Alternatives

Posted: 23 Jul 2021 10:23 AM PDT

OnePlus Nord OnePlus recently launched the OnePlus Nord 2 5G in India and Europe, with the device featuring some key upgrades over the original OnePlus Nord, which was launched back in July of 2020. For those of you who missed it, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G comes with a 6.43-inch AMOLED display. This panel comes with a refresh rate of 90Hz. There is also a single-punch-hole on top, housing a 32MP selfie snapper. Performance on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is handled by an octa-core MediaTek Dimensity 1200 AI processor, coupled with OxygenOS 11.3. Software support is also pretty decent, with the OnePlus Nord 2 having been confirmed to get two OS updates and three years of software support. Cameras too are decent, with the device sporting a triple-camera module with a primary 50MP IMX766 sensor with support for dual video, group shot 2.0 and nightscape ultra. Storage options are topped at 12GB of RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. The battery on the handset is a 4500 mAh unit with support for 65W fast charging. The device has dual-5G SIM card slots and Wi-Fi 6 technology to ensure that the user gets the fastest network speeds. But, with all this said, are there alternatives to the OnePlus Nord 2 5G and, if so, which one should you pick? We list out some key competitors to the OnePlus Nord 2 5G, for those who might be confused as to whether the Nord is the best device in the segment.

What are the Best Alternatives to the OnePlus Nord 2?

Pixel 4A Some of the key devices that can take on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G come from the likes of Samsung, Google and OnePlus. Confused? Don't be, as we will list out what sets these alternatives apart, rather than listing out the specifications. 1. Samsung Galaxy A52 5G (Yet to Be Launched in India): The 2021 Samsung mid-ranger that has been launched in other markets and is soon tipped to be launch in India is more than capable of taking on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. From offering a better display with 120Hz refresh rate support, a better primary sensor and better software support, there are some things the Samsung device gets right. It does lose out on overall performance and charging speeds, but, you win some and you lose some, so this is a question of making a choice. 2. Google Pixel 4A: The Google Pixel 4A is the cheapest current-gen offering from Google with a focus on optics more than processing power. If you don't game a lot or are not a heavy user, it might just be the best option for you. With software that can hands-down beat even OnePlus and optics that punch above its weight, the Google Pixel 4A is a solid all-rounder. 5G won't be there for you, but, if you don't care about it too much, just go for the Pixel. 3. OnePlus Nord: Whilst we did report that the device had been discontinued, if you can get them off some shelves during a stock clearance sale, you won't go wrong with the OG Nord. With a loss in terms of 65W charging and the new chipset, there is not much else separating the two devices.

Vodafone Idea Set to Hike Tariffs, Jio Postpaid Has Limited Traction

Posted: 23 Jul 2021 07:27 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Bharti Airtel, the second-largest wireless operator in India is set to record a 3% increase in revenues in its upcoming quarters, say multiple analysts. The operator on Thursday announced "upgrades" to its retail and corporate postpaid plans to "serve evolving" user needs with the minimum plan for corporate users now priced at Rs 299, up from Rs 199. Similarly, Airtel has also tweaked its retail postpaid plans with the price of its Rs 249 add-on pack increased to Rs 299, translating to a 20% increase.

Entry Level Family Plan Now Up Rs 50

The second-largest wireless operator in India on Thursday also said that its family plan priced at Rs 749 has been "discontinued" for its new users. Airtel in its release highlighted that it now provides Rs 999 as its "only family postpaid plan with enhanced data benefits." "Earlier, subscribers could acquire two SIM cards at Rs 749, with the implied value amounting to Rs 325," Motilal Oswal Financial Services said in a report on Friday. "With the 749 plan now being discontinued, the customer could make a purchase of Rs 499 with an add-on of Rs 299, implying a total value of Rs 800." The Indian diversified financial services firm said that the move to discontinue Rs 749 plan would translate to an 7% increase in average revenue per user (ARPU) for Airtel. Similarly, Motilal Oswal highlighted that the corporate postpaid plans now have a 30% increase. "Assuming [an] average ARPU of Rs 225 for old plans, the hike in this category would be 30%," Motilal Oswal said. It also has to be noted that the Rs 999 postpaid plan has also been revised to offer only three regular SIM with the operator earlier offering three regular SIM and one data SIM. "Vodafone Idea's plans are thus far aligned with Airtel's old plans," Motilal Oswal said. "On the other hand, RJIO's postpaid plans start at Rs 199, but have limited traction. We expect Vodafone Idea to follow suit." The firm highlighted that the postpaid segment "contributes" around 5% to the overall Airtel user base and around 12% to its revenues. Crucially, it was highlighted that the segment is equally split between retail and corporate users. Motilal Oswal said that the average ARPU may now touch Rs 400, translating to an 20% to 25% increase as compared to the overall Airtel ARPU of Rs 145 in its previous quarter. The firm said that the retail postpaid segment of the operator "may see a lower increase" of 15% to 20% while its corporate segment "may see a moderately higher" 30% increase. Further, Motilal Oswal said that the overall increase in Airtel's earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) "could be to the tune" of around 3% with the 20% to 25% postpaid tariff hike. Crucially, the firm said that the benefit is "based on the assumptions" that similar tariff hikes would also be "announced" by its rivals, translating to "limited' postpaid users porting out or switching to prepaid. Similar sentiments were also shared by ICICI Direct in a report on Friday with the firm highlighting that the tariff hikes will translate to a 3% EBITDA increase. The retail broker and financial product distributor highlighted that Airtel has around 1.66 crore, postpaid users. "More importantly, we see it as directionally the small step in the right direction of the overall tariff hike," ICICI Direct said in its report.

Telecom Tariffs Low in India: Airtel CEO

It has to be noted that the Airtel management in the past has consistently said that the ARPU has to touch Rs 200 in the near term. Gopal Vittal, chief executive officer at Bharti Airtel in the 2021 fourth-quarter earnings call said that the operator has a "massive headroom for ARPU growth" despite Airtel ARPU being "highest in the industry." "I say this for two reasons. One is the very low level of tariffs in India," Vittal said in the 2021 fourth-quarter earnings call. "The second is the fact that we have 140 million users on our network who are not on 4G and whose ARPU is less than half that of the average of the business as a whole." In early July, Airtel revised its One Airtel plans as Airtel Black, with the Airtel management indicating that the plans will drive its ARPU. The Airtel Black service enables users to "combine" two or more services including mobile, Direct-to-Home (DTH) and Fiber into one plan. The operator has priced its Airtel Black plans between Rs 998 to Rs 2099. "At some stage, the pricing has to improve because this is the only way in which you can return a reasonable return on the capital employed," Vittal said in the 2021 fourth-quarter earnings call.

If we compare the benefits of the prepaid plans, the benefits and services by the telcos are almost similar. However, if users want to save some money on yearly prepaid plans, they can opt for Reliance Jio prepaid plan.

Vodafone Idea, Airtel Won’t Get Any AGR Relief

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:16 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Tata Teleservices had submitted petitions in the Supreme Court to challenge the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues amount that the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had assessed. However, the SC has ruled that it won't allow any reassessment or change in the amount of dues that was finalised in the last year's hearing. This has put a major blow in the hopes of Vodafone Idea (Vi). The telco had said on its fiscal fourth quarter's earnings call that it hopes to get some financial relief if the SC rules in the favour of the telcos.

Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel Will Have to Pay Complete Dues

As per a report from ET Telecom, the SC has ruled against the telcos' wishes. Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel will have to pay the complete AGR dues that they have. Vi will have to pay its AGR dues of Rs 58,400 crore and Airtel will have to pay Rs 43,980 crore. Even though Airtel's financial condition is much better than Vi's, there's no doubt that Airtel would have benefited from the decision had the SC ruled in favour of the telcos'. For the unaware, Bharti Airtel had self-assessed its AGR dues at Rs 13,003 crore while Vodafone Idea had self-assessed its dues at Rs 21,533 crore. On the other hand, Tata Teleservices had self-assessed its AGR dues at Rs 2,197 crore against the DoT's assessment of Rs 16,798 crore. Out of their total dues, Vodafone Idea has paid Rs 7,854 crore, Airtel has paid Rs 18,003 crore, Tata Tele has paid Rs 4,197 crore. As per the SC order last year, the telcos have to pay their AGR dues in ten instalments until March 31, 2031. All the concerned telcos were really looking forward to the SC decision but since it has gone the other way, they will be pushing for tariff hikes even faster now.

Bharti Airtel to Rapidly Expand Data Centre Capacity In Tune With Digital Growth

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 11:15 PM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel is pushing its horizons on the business front. As per the reports on Thursday, it became pretty clear that Bharti Airtel's business front, Airtel Business, which offers B2B services is becoming the most profitable of the lot which the company owns. On the same lines, in a recent development, we have come to know that Bharti Airtel will be driving more investment towards its data centres to the tune of Rs 3,500 crore. In the previous years, due to the lack of proper data protection laws mostly the Indian data was stored overseas, however, the demand for storing data on national lands has shot up in the last few years. As such, data centre demand has grown with the rising payment operations on mobile phones and online. Prior to the launch of 5G services and to support this infrastructure, Bharti Airtel is likely to ramp up its data centre capacity by three or five times and install 100 MW data parks in the coming months.

Airtel to Setup Eight More Data Centres

Bharti Airtel also owns Nxtra Data Ltd which holds the data centres under Airtel's banners. As per a new ET Telecom report, Bharti Airtel will build up to eight data centres in cities like Mumbai and Pune, wherein there will also be data parks, with each park consisting of multiple buildings. These parks would be of 100 MW capacity. On asking for more questions, Airtel declined to comment on the ground that it does not respond to market speculation. It's worth noting that Airtel Business boasts of having a 31% market share in the B2B segment, when it comes to services like data, voice, IoT, and other digital infrastructure.

Big Companies Betting on Data Centres

As per an investment firm JLL, India's data demand will grow to 1,007 MW by 2023 from its existing capacity of 447 MW. Also, last year US-based Carlyle group had driven investment of $235 million into Nxtra Data Ltd thus pegging the value of the company at $1.2 billion. Since India stands at the cusp of the 5G rollout, the demand for data centres is more than ever and even companies like Microsoft are betting on the same.

Indian Telecom Operators Are Surviving on Minimum

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 10:22 PM PDT

Indian Telecom Operators For anyone aware of the Indian telecom industry, he/she would understand the precarious situation it is in. Even the stalwart Reliance Jio which has been making the most profits faces the heat of the industry. The reason is the way the market has evolved. When Jio came to the scene, it drove down the prices of data very significantly. The other surviving telecom operators had no other option but to reduce the data rates as well. This meant that the average revenue per user (ARPU) for the operators dropped steeply.

Low ARPU and High Costs a Problem for the Telcos

The biggest problem right now for the telcos is low ARPU while their network deployment cost is increasing. With 5G, it would increase even further since the telcos will need new spectrum bands in their portfolio, new equipment, and would need to invest in more fiber networks in the medium term. This is why the industry has been asking for an increase in tariffs. This will especially benefit Vodafone Idea (Vi) which is in a very tight situation. While the users might be a little disappointed, there's no workaround for the fact that the telcos need a tariff hike soon to get a decent return on their investment. Even during the pandemic, the operators didn't get much relief or help from the government. In fact, the government won in the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) battle and is now looking forward to taking thousands of crores from the telcos. With 5G on the way, the operators would want to increase the tariffs a little so that they can earn good money leveraging the next-generation network services. The data rates in India are one of the cheapest in the world while the data consumption rate by the users is right at the top. This pushes the operators to continuously upgrading their network infrastructure to ensure that their 4G networks can sustain the growing demand.

Micromax In 2B Specifications Revealed Via Leak Ahead of July 30 Launch

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 09:39 PM PDT

Micromax IN 2B Homegrown smartphone brand Micromax had made its return a couple of months back with two new devices, both of which seemed to offer competitive specifications that could take the fight to the likes of Realme and Xiaomi, but, with the upper hand being an Indian company, at a time when Chinese goods were being boycotted. Now, Micromax has come out after a couple of months of remaining stagnant, to announce that the company will be launching a new handset on 30 July, with the moniker Micromax In 2B. Going by the name, it is more than evident that this new handset will be the successor to the In 1B budget handset that was launched back in 2020. Today, a new leak has come through via PriceBaba, revealing the key specifications of the upcoming handset, which according to the company in its promotional material, is aimed at gig workers.

Micromax In 2B Specifications, Features Leaked!

As mentioned above, the leak from PriceBaba reveals key details like the display and processor. The device will supposedly feature a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with a waterdrop styled notch on top to house the front selfie snapper. Performance-wise, the device will rely on the Unisoc T610 chipset, and the device is tipped to feature a design similar to the In 1B. There is no major rise in performance, given as to how the IN 1B featured the MediaTek Helio G35 SoC. Storage variants are expected to be limited to just one, a 4GB+64GB variant. Optics wise, the device will make use of a dual-rear-camera setup with a primary 13MP sensor, coupled with a 2MP secondary sensor. Towards the front, there will be an 8MP selfie snapper. Software specifications are not yet known, but the device should run Android 11 out of the box. It will house a 5000 mAh battery with support for 10W charging, which should be more than adequate battery-life wise, but the charging times might be a bit of a headache, considering that most budget handsets have moved to at least 18W charging. Pricing wise, the predecessor of the In 2B, the Micromax In 1B was introduced in India for just Rs 6,999 or approximately $94, so it will be interesting to see whether the Indian brand can keep the pricing similar or avoid a major price hike, but, to know for sure, we will have to wait for the launch event to commence.

Samsung Introduces Upgrades to SDN Solutions for Better 5G Management

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 08:02 PM PDT

Samsung SDN Samsung Electronics on Friday announced that it had released an upgraded version of its software-defined networking or SDN solutions in order to help mobile operators and enterprises when it comes to the management of their respective 5G or 5th-Gen network. The Korean tech giant added that its new SDN solutions would be key in providing support to various enterprises in different kinds of sectors, such as retail and energy, education, the introduction of new and improved 5G applications, services as well as infrastructure. For those of you wondering, SDN is a network architecture approach that allows for the network to be easily controlled by the use of software solutions.

What Does SDN Technology Do?

It also allows for better programmability and automation for the entire network, from access to the core, which lets the organisation increase its operational efficiency. Samsung’s statement mentioned that with an architectural shift from hardware-based deployment to software-centric network design, SDN is key to the provision of highly secure, scalable and adaptable features especially useful in advancing of private networks. The company’s SDN portfolio consists of all the layers of the SDN architecture, be it switches and routers, controllers or orchestrators, as per the statement. Samsung's SDN solutions can also allow for automated end-to-end network slicing, which can let telecom operators provide customized services. In case you did not know, Samsung’s SDN is based on the ONOS or Open Network Operating System, which connects switches and routers from various suppliers and features an enhanced UX design. Samsung, as a company, is not only the world’s largest vendor of smartphones, but it is also one of the key suppliers of 5G end-to-end solutions, such as chipsets, radios and cores. When it comes to what SDN exactly is, it is an approach to network management that allows for a dynamic and programmable efficient network configuration, which can improve network performance and monitoring, making it a lot like cloud computing, instead of traditional network management. SDN is also meant to address the static architecture of traditional networks which is decentralized and complex whilst the current networks need more flexibility and easy troubleshooting. SDN tries to centralize network intelligence in one network component by removing the forwarding process of network packets.

ACT Fibernet 400 Mbps Plan Supersedes Alliance Broadband’s Plan

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 06:44 PM PDT

ACT Fibernet Believe it or not, there are some internet service providers (ISPs) who offer a 400 Mbps plan to the users. Frankly, it is a speed range that most of the users don't need. At maximum, all that an average internet user requires is 200 Mbps speed from his broadband connection if he/she has a big home with several people consuming data at the same time along with different Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. Regardless, ACT Fibernet and Alliance Broadband both offer users a 400 Mbps internet plan with a multitude of benefits. Let's take a look at how ACT's plan is a better option.

ACT Fibernet 400 Mbps Plan

ACT offers several 400 Mbps plan in Bengaluru. The plan that we are going to be focusing on right now is the 'ACT Incredible' plan that comes with unlimited data and costs Rs 1,999 per month (exclusive of taxes). Even though the company says users get unlimited data, the data is capped at 3,300GB per month post which the speed will be reduced to 2 Mbps. There are additional benefits including ACT Stream TV 4K starting at Rs 200 per month, ZEE5 Premium free one month trial, Hungama at Rs 99 per month, SonyLIV for Rs 299 per month, Aha for Rs 299 per year, EPIC ON free for one month, ACT Shield starting at Rs 49 per month, and a free one month trial of Cult.fit.

Alliance Broadband 400 Mbps Plan

Alliance Broadband offers its 400 Mbps broadband plan for Rs 2,600 per month (exclusive of taxes). So it is much more expensive than what ACT Fibernet's 400 Mbps plan costs. However, with this plan, users get truly unlimited data meaning there's no cap on the amount of the data a user can consume in a given month. Further, there are over-the-top (OTT) benefits including SonyLIV, ZEE5 Premium, Hoichoi, Hungama Play, and AddaTimes. In comparison, ACT Fibernet's plan is a much better option. Note that both the operators avail the above-mentioned plans in select locations. Even though Alliance Broadband's plan is much better when it comes to data and OTT benefits, there's just one thing that you can't ignore – the price of the plan. Alliance Broadband's plan is way too expensive than what most of the India can afford. Users have to pay approximately Rs 3,000 per month when taxes are added for the 400 Mbps plan of Alliance Broadband. Thus, if you are looking for a 400 Mbps broadband plan and both the plans are available in your area, going with ACT’s plan would be a better choice.

Vodafone Idea Govt Support Starts With Increase In Investment Limit

Posted: 22 Jul 2021 12:48 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea has been under a cash crunch since the last year. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reports have consistently been pointing out about the concerning churn rate of the telecom operator, which is just the opposite of the other telecom companies. While Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel have been adding subscribers in the interim, Vodafone Idea has been losing subscribers except in the month of February this year. This was when the company announced its plans for a fundraiser back in 2020. However, apart from the lack of eager investors, the financial dues on Vodafone Idea, there was also the legal hurdle of the Foreign Direct Investment limit. However, it seems that Vodafone Idea is now free from one of the worries.

Vodafone Idea Allowed More FDI Now

Vodafone Idea's proposal to the government of allowing foreign direct investment to the count of Rs 15,000 crore has now been approved. Previously, the telecom operator was limited by the investment governing laws of the country, where they could not seek more than Rs 15,000 crore from a firm abroad. At the behest of the news, the stock of Vodafone Idea rose by 6% as per a report by ET Telecom. This, of course, comes as good news for the telecom company.

Things Still Uncertain But

Although this is a step towards the positive side, still things are unclear for Vodafone Idea since the actual funding is nowhere in the picture right now. The telco was last in talks with Apollo Global Management for raising Rs 22,400 crore, a lot of which would go towards AGR dues. The funding structure was mainly to be based on an equity-based exchange. However, it remains to be seen from when and where Vodafone Idea raises funds. The telco's survival is an imperative event for the dynamic balance in the telecom industry, which might deteriorate to a two-player mode in the absence of Vodafone Idea.
