Microsoft’s Surface Duo 2 Could Address This Issue of First-Gen Model Posted: 26 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT Microsoft tried to disrupt the foldable market by launching the Surface Duo, which incidentally marked the company’s return to the smartphone segment, but, its execution seemed to be flawed. With older hardware and a camera that was equivalent to a potato camera, the device failed to justify the whopping $1,399 price tag that it was sold for. Now, it seems that one of the key issues, which was the camera, is being fixed for the Surface Duo 2. Images of the Surface Duo 2 that have been leaked via a YouTube channel called Tech Rat, alongside a confirmation by Windows Central’s Zac Bowden revealed that the device could feature a triple-lens camera to the rear, housed in a rather large camera bump. The Surface Duo 2 Supposedly Fixes the Shortcomings of the Original DuoThis, for those of you unaware, is a major upgrade over the camera of the original Surface Duo, which was an 11MP camera housed in the top bezel of the screens, with a quality equalling a rather dull selfie-snapper. The key issue was the size of the sensor, which caused multiple issues. This, according to anybody who knows how cameras work could be fixed with the inclusion of a larger sensor, but to do so would mean to either add a hideously large punch-hole or just increase the bezel size, but it seems that Microsoft has thought of shifting this up. The triple-lens camera hints at the possibility of a triple-camera setup housing a primary wide-angle sensor coupled with a telephoto sensor and an ultra-wide lens, but none of this is revealed via the leak, so do take it with a pinch of salt, as we are merely guessing. The leak also reveals that the device will supposedly include a 360-degree hinge, which means that the device should be able to fold back into itself, which spells a bit of trouble, as the camera bump would undoubtedly hit the back of the second panel. Tech Rat also claims the inclusion of a slightly larger display, rounded corners and narrower bezels. NFC support should also be added to the device, along with the use of a fresh SoC, which could range from the Snapdragon 888 to the next-gen Snapdragon SoC, given the timeline of the launch. There also seems to be a new black hue that gives the user a bit more choice when it comes to the colour variants, and, from the looks of it, the black looks really classy on the foldable. All of this is still a leak, so do take everything with a massive spoon of salt.
Redmi K50 Series Could Sport Next-Gen Snapdragon SoC, Leaks Suggest Posted: 26 Jul 2021 07:33 AM PDT Redmi and its bigger brother Xiaomi have been well known and are technically renowned for pushing the limits of certain price segments by offering a truly revolutionary smartphone. This has been the case with the Redmi Note 10 series, the Poco F1 (which at the time was considered to be a subsidiary of Xiaomi) and devices like the Mi 10. Recently, however, Redmi’s general manager Lu Weibing caught everyone’s attention after he came on to social media to ask users what they would like to see from future Redmi K50 products, after which a leakster had revealed certain upgrades that might accompany this supposed Redmi K50 series. Redmi K50 Series to Build on K40 Series’ FeaturesToday, however, that was taken to the next step, as leaker Bald Panda on Weibo claimed that the Redmi K50 series of devices would feature the Snapdragon 895 processor, 67W wired charging and a centre-mounted cutout for the punch-hole camera. What caught our attention was the presence of the Snapdragon 895 SoC, which basically hints at the device launching in either December of 2021 or January of 2022, as Qualcomm has been known to launch its next-generation of flagship chipsets in December. Whatever happens, leaks have suggested that Qualcomm’s next flagship-grade SoC will supposedly include the brand new Cortex-A710, Cortex A-510 and Cortex-X2 CPU cores that should one-up what is on offer in 2021. The next upgrade does seem to be a sensible one, as the K40 series of devices offers a measly 33W charging, at least by today’s standards, so a 67W charger should suffice, as the Mi 11 Ultra, Xiaomi’s flagship offers 67W charging that can take the device from 0-100% in just 37 mins, which considering the presence of a 5000 mAh battery is seriously impressive. Cameras should also be upgraded in some way, shape or form, as the main camera number race has become increasingly common and, with the K40 series of devices sporting a 48MP sensor for the K40, a 64MP main sensor for the K40 Pro and a massive 108MP sensor for the K40 Pro Plus, it should be interesting to see what the device opts for. One such option could be the 50MP Samsung GN2 and GN1 sensors which promise larger sensor sizes and pixels, but as of now, nothing has been hinted in regards to the same. It should be interesting to see what Redmi can come up with at a time when smartphone segments are becoming increasingly stagnant in terms of advancements due to production issues and delays owing to the global pandemic.

Not only this, but the phone also packs a 5,000mAh battery that offers 160 hours of music playback, 50 hours of talk time, 20 hours of web browsing, and 15 hours of video streaming. The phone runs on a Unisoc T610 chip which is a 1.8-GHz outa core processor. On the memory front, the phone will run on 4GB of RAM and the Android 11 operating system. To recall, the series launched by Micromax last year used to come with Helio processors. Another leak highlighted that the phone would fashion a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with an 8MP front shooter and 13MP and 2MP dual camera on the back. |
Reliance Jio Exceeds Expectations In Profits But Gets Limited By ARPU Posted: 26 Jul 2021 06:20 AM PDT Reliance Jio's quarterly earnings report has been under a hot discussion from analysts, investors, and telecom subscribers alike. The telecom operator's and RIL's combined earnings reports have been making rounds of the internet because of the peculiarity in the figures, which point us to look deeply into what is going on with the telco's finances and subscriber addition. To recall, Reliance Jio's Average Revenue Per User (ARPU), the highest chased metric of the industry, stood at Rs 138.2 in the previous quarter. However, as per the latest earning report, which expected the ARPU to hit higher standards, the telecom operator could not only inch it forward to Rs 138.4, thus signalling a very marginal increase in ARPU. ARPU Rise Limited By Low Paying CustomersOn the other hand, the other metrics like the standalone profits surpassed the expectations of the analysts, which was pegged at Rs 3,501 crore. Brokerage firm Jefferies remarked that the current ARPU of Reliance Jio is slightly below the expectations. The figures were reported by ET Telecom. The total subscriber addition in the quarter stood at 14 million for Reliance Jio. A figure which far trumps other telecom operators. But, the reason why this subscriber addition could not translate to higher ARPU is JioPhone. Most of the chunk of subscribers which were added to the Jio pool consisted of the low-paying JioPhone customers on the back of the offers introduced by the telco in recent times.Reliance Jio EBITDA Might Take a Small Hit In Coming QuartersThe investment firm also made predictions for Reliance Jio in the coming years. For the period 2021-24, Jeffries said that the total subscriber count of Reliance Jio would reach 530 million. In the same period, the company is expected to deliver a CAGR of 15% on its revenues and 20% CAGR on profits. As per the analysts' report, in the present quarter, Reliance Jio's EBITDA and profits stand strong because of lower than expected license fees and interest expenses. However, in the coming quarters, the higher operating costs might burden these figures. The JioFiber customers are high paying ones for Reliance Jio, who seem to be using around 300GB of data per month.
5G Networks to Have More Than 200 Million Subscribers Five Years From Now Posted: 26 Jul 2021 05:00 AM PDT The fifth-generation network technology still eludes the Indian subscribers and telecom operators. There are multiple reasons for it, like the financial condition of the telecom companies, delay in the spectrum auction, among others. However, the 5G technology in other countries and in a global scale has been growing rapidly, with telecom companies in countries like South Korea and the USA vehemently adding subscribers and relaying fast services. On the same lines, data and statistics have also started coming on 5G subscribers around the world and where the trajectory is headed in this regard. As per Juniper networks, an American network gear manufacturer, the subscribers of 5G services will reach 210 million five years from now as opposed to only 4.5 million at present. This would amount to a growth rate of 4,500%. 5G Roaming Technology to Support SubscribersAs per the reports cited above and also ET Telecom, the research analysts behind the work said that the telecom companies should focus on the 5G roaming technology. With the pandemic hitting tourism and travel currently, the demand for roaming is low. However, missing out on developing the 5G roaming capability would hurt "brand reputation" and would also be a missed opportunity. The analysts also added that the competition around these technologies would also be intensified as the telecom companies seek to deploy these more and more. More services like roaming analytics, sponsored roaming, and steering of roaming should also be developed to cater to the demand of subscribers.Data Traffic on 5G to Also Grow ManifoldThe report on the 5G roaming subscriber data also predicted that global roaming data traffic from 5G subscribers would likely touch the 770 petabytes (PB) mark by 2026, from 2.6PB in 2021. The telecom companies are also likely to partner with each other to provide roaming services. Also, Juniper Networks highlighted that the subscribers should be provided with ample bandwidth and low latency while roaming to and fro between 5G roaming and home network. This would ensure less churn of subscribers and would build a robust infrastructure and segue to a 5G network.
Is Vodafone Idea Eyeing Tariff Hikes Soon? Posted: 26 Jul 2021 04:05 AM PDT Vodafone Idea has been facing gloomy days since the AGR dues matter started in the Indian telecom space. Over the period, Vodafone Idea has faced financial distress, funding default, subscribers loss that has weakened the backbone of the entity. It would be too early to say that Vodafone Idea will kneel down and exit from the Indian telecom space. If government jumps in and aid the telco by providing a relief package, the telecom space in India will not convert into a duopoly. However, if Vodafone Idea has to revive on its own, the journey to lower the financial burden and clear the AGR dues will be full of challenges. Vodafone Idea Tariff Hike Might be IntroducedOne of the ways through which Vodafone Idea can lower the financial distress and keep the business going is by introducing tariff hikes. Recently, Bharti Airtel has also announced developments around the tariff hike. However, looking at the competitive telecom space in India, Vodafone Idea might witness a decrease in subscriber addition. Alternatively, Vodafone Idea is eyeing to earn from both retail and corporate customers. The telco giant has recently released new enterprise postpaid plans that are packed with intriguing benefits and services.Investors Might Jump in and Save Vodafone IdeaIn case you are not aware, Vodafone Group Plc and Aditya Birla Group hold 45% stake and 26% stake respectively in the entity. Since the plans of getting an investor have been a long lost dream for Vodafone Idea, the prime investors might jump in and dilute their stake towards investors who can take over the entity and manage the operations. The major reason behind diluting the stake would be to lower the debt and get rid of financial distress. Since the verdict of the Supreme Court was rolled out, the funding plans of Vodafone Idea seems to be suffering. For the past few months, Vodafone Idea is extensively working on getting funding of Rs 25,000 crore from different companies. However, the deal is still under the planning stage, and no final verdict has been rolled out regarding the same. We can expect that if the funding plans of Vodafone Idea are executed, the telco might stand strong and slowly lower the massive debt. In immediate arrangements, Vodafone Idea has to repay 24,000 crores towards AGR dues which can be paid easily if the funding deal is signed. Currently, with a cash reserve of just Rs 350 crores, Vodafone Idea has a debt of Rs 1.8 lakh crore in which Rs 58,254 crores is accounted for AGR dues. In my opinion, the government might extend their support in keeping the Indian telecom space a three-player market and eliminate the situation of bankruptcy.
Reliance Jio 5G Ambulance to Have Emergency Room Facilities Posted: 26 Jul 2021 03:20 AM PDT Reliance Industry Limited (RIL) put out its quarterly earnings report just a few days back highlighting some of the prominent partnerships that it has made in the last quarter, ranging from April to June 2021. The telecom operator is at the UPPER edge of the competition with the most subscribers in its basket. As such, when it comes to the fifth generation 5G network technology, Reliance Jio sees itself as an innovator. In a new development, Reliance Platforms Ltd, a subsidiary of RIL, has remarked that in collaboration with NH Reliance Foundation it will develop a 5G enabled ambulance. Reliance Jio to Leverage Low Latency NetworkKiran Thomas, President of Reliance Jio said in a virtual press brief to the analysts on July 23 about the development of this ambulance. It's worth noting that the 5G technology comes with way more use cases than the 4G tech could enable. As such, the telecom companies have been after experimenting with multiple usages which can happen on the back of this high-speed technology. Low latency remains one of the most sought-after features of 5G networks. As such, Thomas said that with the help of this 5G ambulance, every facility of a hospital emergency room would be available in this ambulance. The President also remarked during the press meet about the applicability of the 5G technology in various verticals. The official also said that Reliance Jio is testing the use cases in these various segments, namely entertainment, education, and healthcare. As per the Mint report on the matter, RIL also inked some strategic and important partnerships in the industry with one of the major ones being with Google Cloud. This partnership would help Reliance Jio in deploying 5G solutions for a lot of its products and even its retail branches like JioMart, and other services like JioSaavn and JioHealth. Reliance Jio has already gotten the nod to conduct 5G field trials along with the requisite spectrum for the same. In the last quarter, Reliance Jio’s digital services business has recorded profits above Rs 9,000 crore and the revenue growth has been pegged at 44.9%.

Vodafone Idea Launches New Enterprise Postpaid Plans Posted: 26 Jul 2021 12:31 AM PDT Vodafone Idea (Vi) has come out with new enterprise postpaid plans for its corporate customers. The telco is striving hard to earn not only from the retail customers but also the corporate customers. Looking at the evolving needs of the enterprises, Vi has launched new postpaid plans for its corporate customers with a range of exclusive benefits. The telco has announced a total of four new plans that cost Rs 299, Rs 349, Rs 399, and Rs 499 per month. Along with data and voice calling benefits, these corporate plans also come with 'Business Plus' benefits offered by the telco. Let's take a look at the plans in detail. Vodafone Idea New Enterprise Postpaid Plans As you can see, all the new enterprise postpaid plans from the company come with truly unlimited voice calling, 3000 SMS per month which equates to 100 SMS/day, and Business Plus Benefits which include mobile security, Vi Movies & TV, Vi Caller Tunes, and more. The Rs 499 plan even comes with an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Disney+ Hotstar VIP that costs Rs 399 per year. For the unaware, even Bharti Airtel recently announced new postpaid plans for both enterprise and retail customers to target higher average revenue per user (ARPU). It will be interesting to see how these new plans from the telco are perceived by the telco's customers. In other news, the Vodafone Idea promoters including the Vodafone Group Plc and the Aditya Birla Group might soon dilute their stake in the company if they can get an investor who is ready to purchase the Vi equity and convertible shares at a premium on the current market rate. The telco has been unsuccessful in finding a new investor and the promoter groups aren’t too keen on investing more money into the company. The only way out here for Vi might be to monetise its fibre assets and data centre business in India.
RCom Lenders Very Close to Huge Loss Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:41 PM PDT Reliance Communications, the bankrupt Anil Ambani company, might soon see its telecom license getting cancelled. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is set to cancel the telecom license of RCom because the telco has failed to pay the statutory dues. According to a Business Standard report, the bankrupt telco would be served with a show-cause notice before its telecom license is cancelled. For the unaware, RCom's telecom license is expiring on July 27, 2021. The DoT is unlikely to renew the license for the bankrupt telco because it is evident that it won't be able to pay the dues it owes to the government. RCom Lenders Will Take a Huge Hit if Telecom License Is CancelledAs per an ET Telecom report earlier this month, the resolution professional of RCom, Deloitte, had told the Bankruptcy Court that if the telecom license of RCom is cancelled, its insolvency process will be majorly affected. Deloitte had told the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) that if RCom's telecom license is cancelled, the telco will have to surrender its most valuable asset – spectrum. If the spectrum of the telco can't be transferred or sold, the lenders of the company will take a huge blow since they won't be able to recover anything. Without the license, RCom's entire corporate insolvency resolution process (CIRP) will fall apart. For the unaware, DoT had rejected the RCom's request of renewing the telecom license for the next 20 years. The telecom department will only go ahead with renewing the telco's license once it pays off its adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues amounting to Rs 26,000 crore. RCom currently holds spectrum in the 850 MHz band in over 14 telecom circles of the country. If the bankrupt telco has to surrender this spectrum on the cancellation of its license, the lenders won't be able to recover anything. We are only one day away from July 27, 2021, when the telco's telecom license is expiring.
5G Spectrum Pricing the Key Thing for India Posted: 25 Jul 2021 11:17 PM PDT India might not see the true potential of 5G if the spectrum pricing is not fair. In simple words, if the spectrum pricing is way more than what telcos can afford, they won't buy it. Telecom operators in India have already expressed that if they don't get the necessary 5G spectrum at a fair price, they will not buy it from the government and go ahead with rolling out 5G networks through 4G core using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology. It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel has already given an example of this by making India's first 5G network live for testing using spectrum in 1800 MHz band with the help of DSS technology in Hyderabad. DoT to Talk With TRAI for 5G Spectrum Auction Related IssuesThe Department of Telecommunications (DoT) will soon be talking with the sector regulator to take its views on the 5G spectrum auction issues. The spectrum auctions will take place as soon as the telcos are done with their 5G trials. It is worth noting that the operators are already working very hard to ensure that 5G can be rolled out as soon as they are allotted the necessary airwaves. The only issue is that the spectrum auctions can't be put in a fixed timeline because of multiple problems. One problem is the Indian Navy not vacating 100 MHz of airwaves in the 3.3 GHz to 3.6 GHz band. Then there are other problems related to spectrum pricing. The telecom department will be taking views of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) to ensure that the pricing of the airwaves is right. The coveted 700 MHz spectrum band has seen no takers for multiple auctions now because of its very high price band. The department will have to ensure that the 700 MHz spectrum band is introduced in the auctions with a price cut because it is important for the telcos to provide 5G services.
Vodafone Idea Investors May Dilute Stake Posted: 25 Jul 2021 10:22 PM PDT The current owners of the Vodafone Idea (Vi) – Vodafone Group Plc and the Aditya Birla Group are ready to transfer control of the company to an interested investor if any. The telco's initial plan of getting an investor hasn't been successful yet. Both the promoter groups are currently in talks with potential investors including three US-based funds. The aim is to sell a bundle of the convertible as well as equity shares of Vodafone Idea to raise money so that the cash-strapped telco can pay off its debts and continue with the expansion of its networks in India. As per a HindustanTimes report, the promoters are ready to transfer control of the company if there's a potential investor ready to take the lead. Vodafone Group Plc and Aditya Birla Group Ready to Take the Back SeatFor the unaware, the Vodafone Group Plc owns a 45% stake in the company while the Indian promoter group that includes Kumar Mangalam Birla and Aditya Birla Group firms have a 26% stake in the company. As per the publication, both the promoters are ready to sell their majority stake to an interested investor who can take control of the company and potentially run it smoothly. But this will only happen if the interested investor is ready to pay the premium on the current market price of Vodafone Idea. As of now, Vodafone Idea's current market value stands at Rs 24,000 crores. In case the equity deal worth $2 billion (Rs 15,000 crores approximately) takes place at the current stock price, it would dilute the promoters’ holdings by 62.5%. This would result in Vodafone Group's stake in the company coming down to 28% and Aditya Birla Group's stake dipping to around 16.25%. The stock price of Vodafone Idea saw a negative hit post the announcement of the Supreme Court's decision on the Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) dues rectification of errors. Note that nothing's confirmed officially by the company.
Apple iPhone 13 Might Feature Fast-Charging Posted: 25 Jul 2021 09:54 PM PDT While the iPhone 12 was one of the biggest redesigns for iPhones in the last few years, iPhone 13 will come with some of the most-awaited and first seen features for iPhones. Things such as a high-refresh-rate display and more are expected to make their way on the iPhone 13 series smartphones. One area where Apple really needs to make strides to compete with Android smartphones is the battery segment. It is not just the battery life that I am talking about, but also the charging speed. Android smartphones have already broken limits and now offer 120W, 100W, 65W fast-charging support. But with Apple, users are still stuck with up to 20W fast-charging. However, this might change with the Apple iPhone 13. iPhone 13 Might Feature 25W Fast-ChargingA ton of rumours have surfaced related to the iPhone 13 series that is due to launch later this year. Now, as per one of the reports from MyDrivers, it is expected that the iPhone 13 series might feature fast-charging support of up to 25W. While this is still not very fast compared with today's standards, it is the fastest charging experience that Apple users have ever seen. For comparison, the iPhone 12 series currently only offers up to 20W fast-charging only. Thus, the users not only get smaller battery life than Android smartphones but also have to wait longer for their iPhones to completely charge. The iPhone 13 series devices are also expected to feature a smaller notch and come with a much better camera than the iPhone 12 series. Further, the smartphone might launch in two new colours, namely the Rose Gold and the Sunset Gold. Apple has already played with the Rose gold colour quite a few times with its products before. But with the iPhone 13, I expect that the Rose Gold colour will be a refreshing thing to see.

Then there's the OnePlus Nord CE 5G (review) which launched one month back and is priced much cheaper than the OnePlus Nord 2. If you are confused between the two, know that in terms of performance, design, and functionality, the OnePlus Nord 2 is much ahead of the Nord CE 5G. The first variant comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage for Rs 27,999. The base variant won't go on sale from today but in August. Users having an Amazon Prime account or who are part of the OnePlus Red Cable club can get their hands on the OnePlus Nord 2 in 12GB and 8GB RAM variants starting today.OnePlus Nord 2 Specifications OverlookThe OnePlus Nord 2 comes powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI SoC coupled with up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. | BSNL Short-Term Plans Better Than Airtel, Jio, Vi Offerings Posted: 25 Jul 2021 07:03 PM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has found a way to beat the affordable plans offered by Bharti Airtel, Reliance Jio, and Vodafone Idea. The state-run telco offers one benefit that neither of the other operators offers to the users going for a very affordable plan under Rs 100. This one benefit that I am talking about is a game-changer for almost everyone who wants to port their SIM from one company's network to another. Still didn't get it? Well, keep reading ahead. BSNL Offers SMS Benefits, While Airtel, Jio, and Vi Doesn'tBSNL offers users SMS benefits with low-end prepaid plans, which the other operators have deliberately stopped offering. Users going with a prepaid plan under Rs 100 from either of the private telecom operators won't get any SMS benefits with their plan. This means that even if the users want to port to another network, they can't because they cannot shoot the required text for the same. The 'STV_49' from BSNL that costs only Rs 49 comes with 100 SMS benefits for 28 days. While these are not a ton of SMSes, it will still help the users in porting from one network to another if they want to. This is a clever way of hindering the customers' wish of porting to another network by the private operators. While any customer can go with a higher-priced plan and get the SMS benefits to send the porting request, it is highly unfair that they can't do so with a low-end plan. On top of that, the private operators have also removed the SMS top-up plans from their offerings to ensure that these low paying customers don't get to recharge with a cheap SMS top-up and port out of their network. However, it is worth noting that select affordable plans from BSNL, including the Rs 99 and Rs 105 plans, don't come with any SMS benefits either. Regardless, there is an even cheaper plan of Rs 29 from BSNL that comes for 5 days only but offers users 300 SMSes. This is a clever move from the telcos'. But the thing is, it is not the way an operator should make the users stay on its network. The way to do that is by offering consistently good services, delivering what it promises, and pricing its plans reasonably as per the benefits offered. If a telco gets this right, it doesn't need to fear a lot of users opting out of its network. |

Microsoft tried to disrupt the foldable market by launching the Surface Duo, which incidentally marked the company’s return to the smartphone segment, but, its execution seemed to be flawed. With older hardware and a camera that was equivalent to a potato camera, the device failed to justify the whopping $1,399 price tag that it was sold for. Now, it seems that one of the key issues, which was the camera, is being fixed for the

On the same lines, data and statistics have also started coming on 5G subscribers around the world and where the trajectory is headed in this regard. India might not see the true potential of 5G if the spectrum pricing is not fair. It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel has already given an example of this by making India's first 5G network live for testing using
