Vodafone Idea, Airtel Should Avoid Tariff Hikes: Opinion Posted: 29 Jul 2021 08:24 AM PDT Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel are going to go for tariff hikes soon. But neither of the telcos should be too jumpy about it after looking at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) monthly report for May 2021. Apart from Jio, neither of the telcos added any subscribers. In fact, both Vi and Airtel, who are planning to go for tariff hikes, lost more than 4 million subscribers each. At a point when the telcos are not adding new subscribers, increasing tariffs would mean only one thing – a higher subscriber churn rate. Why Are Airtel and Vi Looking to Increase Tariffs?Higher tariffs would allow the cash-strapped telecom operators in working more flexibly and also pay off their debt faster. Both Vi and Airtel owe thousands of crores to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. One thing is clear, neither of the telcos would want to go for tariff hikes alone because of the high risk of increasing subscriber churn rate. Even if they both go for tariff hikes and Jio doesn't, it would still result in a negative. The dilemma is that Vodafone Idea needs high average revenue per user (ARPU) desperately so that it can increase its overall profits. The telco had previously said that looking at the current market condition, no new investor wants to jump in. Basically, Vi was saying that the industry needs a tariff hike so that investors can see their money coming back to them. Even Vi is continuously investing in expanding the reach of its networks so that customers around India can enjoy the true power of 4G. However, with huge debt on its shoulders, no profits, and subscriber loss, the telco doesn't have a lot of time to make a decision. It needs its customers to pay more so that it can generate the cash flow to operate the business until the time it can secure an investor.Airtel Losing Subscribers Is Not a Good ThingAfter the spectrum deployment and improvement in networks, it is super strange to see Bharti Airtel losing subscribers. In a bid to earn more, the telco might go with tariff hikes, but it wouldn't look good given its performance in the month of May 2021. Further, Bharti Airtel wouldn't want to lose out its market share to Reliance Jio even further. There's one thing to consider here; Reliance Jio is in a very commanding position. The telco can wait for tariff hikes even further and let Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel figure out how they can succeed. Or, Jio can also improve its ARPU by increasing tariffs with Airtel and Vi and also provide relief to the industry in the short term. Jio wouldn't be evil if it doesn't go for tariff hikes right away. It is a business at the end of the day which wants to add more subscribers and gain a larger market share. Regardless, if Airtel and Vi go for tariff hikes right now, it will be bad for them in the short term.

One of the unique features of the OnePlus Nord CE 5G is the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack. | Prepaid Plans About to Become Expensive Posted: 29 Jul 2021 05:52 AM PDT The moment when prepaid plans become expensive is nearby. Telecom operators have clearly indicated that they won't hesitate to raise tariffs to improve their average revenue per user (ARPU) so that their marginal profits improve. For Airtel and Jio, it's a question of improving profit margins, while for Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), it is about survival. According to an IANS report, Goldman Sachs said that Bharti Airtel is not afraid of making the first move to increase tariffs. This move should motivate Vodafone Idea to go for tariff hikes as well, which is looking to improve its ARPU and overall revenues substantially. Vodafone Idea Likely to Follow Bharti Airtel's Tariff Hike MoveVodafone Idea is very likely to follow Bharti Airtel in increasing tariffs. Both the telcos will benefit majorly if their ARPU goes up. As per Goldman Sachs, after the discontinuation of the Rs 49 plan from all the 22 telecom circles of India, 55 million customers of the telco who are using the concerned plan will have to shift to the Rs 79 plan, which will result in an immediate monthly ARPU jump of Rs 5 for Airtel. One of the key things worth mentioning here is that Airtel is not afraid of customer churn. The telco's recent move of discontinuation of the Rs 49 plan suggests so. Bharti Airtel is known for being the 'premium' telecom brand in India, and the telco has suggested many a time that it only focuses on adding more high ARPU customers. The overall industry price hikes are around the corner, and with 5G on the way, the telcos will have to incur more costs on purchasing new spectrum and deploying new 5G solutions and equipment. Vodafone Idea would be very happy to see Airtel moving ahead with the tariff hikes first because the cash-strapped telco can't do it on its own as it would only result in a higher subscriber churn. |

Reliance Jio Only Gained New Subscribers in May 2021 Posted: 29 Jul 2021 03:21 AM PDT In a surprising turn of events, only Reliance Jio has added new wireless subscribers in May 2021. It's strange to see Bharti Airtel losing subscribers. Vodafone Idea and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) carry on with losing wireless subscribers for consecutive months. What's even stranger is that the number of subscribers which Bharti Airtel lost is more than Vodafone Idea's figures. Reliance Jio is continuing its prime form and has added more than 3 million users in May 2021. Reliance Jio Adds 3+ Million Subscribers While Vi and Airtel Lost 4 Million Users![]()
Vodafone Idea Indian Promoter Not Interested In Raising Its Stake Posted: 29 Jul 2021 02:52 AM PDT The second major stakeholder of Vodafone Idea, Aditya Birla Group, is not utilising its power to buy shares of Vodafone Idea from the co-promoter, Vodafone Group and increase its 27.66% stake. The option to buy shares of Vodafone Idea is granted under the existing shareholder pact. Aditya Birla Group (ABG) has the power to buy additional shares of Vodafone Idea at Rs 130 per share from Vodafone Group to raise its stake in the telco to 35.5% within three years of closure of the partnership between Vodafone India and Idea Cellular. Not only this, but ABG can also purchase the shares at the existing Vodafone Idea stock in the fourth year of merger closing. Aditya Birla Group Eyeing for Vodafone Idea's SurvivalAs reported by ET Telecom, if the equalisation of stakes defaults even in four years, Vodafone Group can sell its holdings to reach Aditya Birla Group's level Vodafone Group currently holds 44.39% stake in Vodafone Idea. One of the unknown officials aware of the matter told that Aditya Birla Group is not planning to boost its ownership but keep Vodafone Idea alive by signing the pending fundraising plans to elevate the 4G operations and lower the financial debt.Aditya Birla Group and Vodafone Group Might not Infuse Fresh Equity in Vodafone IdeaVodafone Idea is extensively working to bag Rs 25,000 crores from fundraising events. However, the telco has failed to secure the deal to date. One of the speculations that have surfaced on the internet is that if ABG had surplus cash reserves to buy a stake in Vodafone Group, it would rather invest the amount in the telco to lower the financial distress. However, both Vodafone Group and Aditya Birla Group might not infuse fresh equity in Vodafone Idea. One of the major reasons that could justify the reluctance of Aditya Birla Group to increase its stake in Vodafone Idea is the massive AGR burden and a handful of cash reserves. In total, Vodafone has to pay Rs 58,254 crore towards AGR dues, and the telco just sits on Rs 350 crore cash reserve. To date, Vodafone Idea has just paid around Rs 7,800 crore towards AGR dues.
India and 5G Dream, All We Know Posted: 28 Jul 2021 10:08 PM PDT India wants to lead the fifth revolution (which is the digital revolution integrating tech and humans even further) with the help of 5G. Mr Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of RIL, wants India to not miss out on leading from the front when it comes to 5G. However, right now, when countries such as the United States (U.S.) and the United Kingdom (U.K.) along with multiple other European nations already have tons of live commercial 5G networks, how will India be able to compete and get ahead? 5G In India: When Will Spectrum Auctions Happen, and Networks Will Go Live? There's no saying about either. One thing is for sure; spectrum auctions won't take place this year. It will be only possible either in the first quarter of CY22 or the second quarter. As soon as the telcos get the desired spectrum they are currently testing their 5G networks in; they will be able to launch live commercial 5G networks. But this won't happen if the government and the sector regulator doesn't come up with an affordable base price of the spectrum for the telcos. The operators have already expressed how unfeasible it will be for them to purchase spectrum at such a high base price. Thus, if the base price of the 5G spectrum isn't reduced, the operators will ignore bidding much in the auction. Talking about when the networks will go live, it won't be before the second or third quarter of CY22. Most probably, some of the metro cities where the 5G trials are ongoing might get live 5G networks in the second quarter of CY22.Telcos' Can Use 4G Core and Networks for 5G As WellThe telecom operators can also go with the option of using 4G cores with Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology for rolling out live 5G networks. It won't give users the true potential of 5G; regardless, it should be much faster than the current 4G networks. Bharti Airtel has done it earlier this year and has also expressed that it can wait for the 5G spectrum for years without worrying too much if the base price of the spectrum is not feasible for an affordable rollout.
iQOO 8 Series Could Make Use of 10-Bit AMOLED Panel With 120Hz Variable Refresh Rate Support Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:56 PM PDT iQOO, the popular smartphone maker announced recently that it would be debuting the upcoming iQOO 8 series of devices at the ChinaJoy event that is set to take place in early August. The event, which is from July 30 to August 2 will be the debut stage for the entirety of the iQOO 8 series of devices, which is expected to feature more than two models, owing to increased customer bases. Now, ahead of the event, the display and its USP or unique selling point has been leaked, bringing us some information about the device prior to the official launch. iQOO 8 Series to Feature E5 2K Res Displays!According to tipster Abhishek Yadav (@yabhishekhd), the iQOO 8 series will make use of an E5 2K resolution display. This will be an LTPO panel with support for 10-bit colour. The handset will also come with a 120Hz refresh rate panel and, which will be a variable refresh rate panel, meaning that it will switch from 1Hz and 120Hz depending on the kind of content that is being consumed on the screen. This comes after previous rumours had suggested that the display could employ the services of a large punch-hole styled notch, so it seems that the display has been leaked or heavily rumoured, with some of it probably being true. To add to this, another famed tipster recently revealed that the iQOO 8 series of devices would be the first smartphones to make use of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888+ or 888 Plus chipset out of the box. The main core CPU of the SoC will supposedly be boosted to 2.995GHz, in contrast to 2.84GHz on the SD888. There is also a 20% improvement in AI performance. This will be paired with up to 12GB of RAM and an additional 4GB of virtual RAM. Storage-wise, the device should include 256GB of onboard storage. Furthermore, the device is expected to depend on a decently sized 4,500 mAh battery, with the star of the show being the whopping 120W charger that is a massive upgrade over the iQOO 7. The devices in the series are also expected to feature in-display fingerprint scanners and boot Origin OS based on Android 11 out of the box. Reports have suggested that the devices under this series could be launched in India sooner or later, probably before 2022, so it should be interesting to see how the pricing is handled for a flagship-grade device that can take the fight to the likes of OnePlus and Samsung.
Twitter Might Soon Allow Shopping Abilities via Shop Module Feature Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:20 PM PDT Popular micro-blogging site Twitter seems to be working on adding a new feature to the platform that will allow businesses to add a shopping section to the top part of their profiles. As per the Verge, Twitter‘s Shop Module feature was launched in the United States of America on Wednesday, with the feature offering a carousel of products for visitors to take a look at. Tapping on a specific product will then link to a listing with the ability to make a purchase provided to the user, without ever having to move out of Twitter. Twitter’s Shop Module Could Be Great for BusinessesTalking about this, Twitter in a statement stated that the pilot was currently limited to iOS devices for people who are using the service in English. It added that people seem to be talking about products on Twitter every day, so the company is excited to see how this early exploration of the Shop Module could build a bridge between people talking about and discovering products on Twitter to actually purchasing them. The feature is now on offer with a few brands, with some of them being GameStop, Arden Cove and ten other brands. The company did fail to reveal a rough timeline of when an expansion to this can be expected. This comes after other social media giants such as Instagram, Pinterest, Facebook and WhatsApp have introduced new features that can make these platforms into a shopping service, and, even Twitter has tried the same earlier by adding a Buy button within a couple of tweets, but it was officially cancelled in 2017. The Verge has reported that Twitter’s shop module comes after the platform has set its main to make money beyond just ads, one of which was the paid subscription service that offered specific features and a Tip Jar feature for one-time payments. In other Twitter-related news, the social-media giant had announced last week that it would be testing a way to up and down-vote replies, in a bid to understand what remarks a user might find relevant in their context, and, what they might feel is non-contextual. This announcement was made after a tweet by Twitter Support, that mentioned that some iPhone users could see this option. Downvotes would not be public as of now, but the upvotes will appear as likes on a particular mention or tweet.
TRAI Tariff Regime Proving Detrimental to Broadcasters Not Only Consumers Posted: 28 Jul 2021 09:02 PM PDT The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) brought the National Tariff Order back in 2019. The notification of this new development was seen as a positive step by the subscribers; however, the same feelings were not shared by the broadcasting community. The big hotshots of the broadcasting industry unitedly opposed the NTO in various High Courts across the country. The legal tussle still persists between the parties and the sector regulator. Soon after the new tariff regime, which was nightmarish to implement given the lack of preparation and technical know-how among the subscribers, it soon became clear that broadcasters might have had a point. As per the surveys post the NTO rollout, a lot of Cable TV subscribers reported a rise in their monthly bills, an outcome that was not expected. In such a scenario, it begs to be questioned what points do the broadcasters raise in this issue. Arbitrary Limit on Channel PricingFirst and foremost is the limit of channel pricing, which has been slapped on the broadcasters. Although in the latest Bombay High Court ruling, the broadcasters were able to break free from one clause of the NTO 2.0, the ideal scenario is far away for them even yet. In a conversation with a senior official of a big broadcasting firm, it was highlighted that TRAI had arbitrarily fixed the limit of the channel price at Rs 12 and then given the leeway of pricing it up to Rs 19. The main pain point for the broadcasters seems to be the single yardstick that has been used to price all the channels. The channels with a vast coverage and heavy content output have been allowed to be priced as same as some of the less noteworthy channels. While the latter might spend way less on buying rights, the former has to spend a lot more. The solution to the cash crunch lies in advertisement revenue, which on the other hand, causes a pinch in the quality of content. Further on, the higher pricing of the channel discourages the subscribers to watch these channels, causing a subsequent fall in advertising revenue as well.Heavy Handed Regulation by TRAIHence, what we see here is a double-sided regulation from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), which is looking at the DTH industry from the lens of telecom. This is, however, absent in the industry of data packs and OTT content, where data is allowed to flow abundantly, and there is minuscule regulation in the pricing affairs of OTT platforms. On the other hand, when it comes to the DTH industry, the intermediaries have the upper hand since their NCF is fixed regardless of what number of channels the subscribers have, and they have ensured payment of Rs 130 on every connection.Broadcasters and the Audit TroublesThe broadcasters also face the problem of severe under-reporting since the auditing powers, as per the new regulations, stay with the DPOs. As per a letter obtained by TelecomTalk to TRAI, broadcasters have written how there have been vast discrepancies between the numbers reported by the regulator and the numbers reported by DPOs post the audit. In fact, a lot of DPOs have not even fulfilled their auditing duties. For example, in the October-December 2019 Quarterly Performance Indicator Report (PIR) of TRAI, there were 69.98 million DTH subscribers as of December 2019. But, the figures reported to the broadcasters were off by more than 10 million subscribers, hence signalling blatant under-reporting on the back of missing empanelment of auditors. In such a scenario, there needs to be a balance in regulation by TRAI, wherein the auditing measures, an activity that keeps the industry in check, should be stringently executed by the DPOs, and the broadcasters should be given more say in it. Not only this, but the heavy-handed regulation with a telecom perspective should be thought over again, and the market forces should be given a more say in how the broadcasting industry and DPOs operate in tandem. This would not only be for the benefit of stakeholders but by ripple effect, good for the consumers as well.
Google Is Adding Caller ID, Missed Call Related Features to Voice Posted: 28 Jul 2021 07:44 PM PDT In the wee hours of Thursday, Google announced that it would finally be adding a new caller ID, SMS message related features and missed call features to Google Voice. The update that brings these improvements is quite notable, as it is a sign of Google remembering the existence of Google Voice, which was sidelined by Google to focus on other ventures. Now users, be it for missed calls or voicemails of the Google Voice application, will be able to learn as to why they might have missed a call, with one such instance being the Do Not Disturb or DND option having been switched on. Google Voice to Offer Multiple ImprovementsIf this is indeed the case, the app will now provide you with directions as to how that can be avoided in the future, which in this case will be to turn Do Not Disturb off. Google is also making it easier for users to redial dropped calls and switch to the user’s mobile network in the situation where your Wi-Fi connection could have resulted in a failed call pick-up. Coming to the iOS camp, if you are using Google Voice on iOS in order to forward calls to your main number, you can now have the app display your Google Voice number instead of the original number on the caller ID. SMS messages can also be deleted in bulk now, something that was not on offer in the web version of the application. For those of you unaware, Google has tried multiple times to offer services to connect people but, with the exception of Gmail, most of them seemed to have flopped or died down on their own. Voice, in particular, was left hanging when Google Fi was launched, with the latter promising the services of a regular dialer service. Voice did get a new redesign and a dark mode back in 2020, but, since it is a Workspace oriented product, it has not been dramatically changed over the years, and, this update marks a sign of Voice’s future still being there, at least for the short-term as Google seems to have no plans to kill it. The application was launched way back in 2009 and, it seems to have managed to keep its head above the water, even if it was never as popular as the likes of Gmail, Hangouts or Skype.
Vodafone Idea, BSNL Offer This Unique Benefit Posted: 28 Jul 2021 06:31 PM PDT Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) are the only two operators in India who offer 'truly unlimited data' benefit to the users at night. While most of the users are familiar with what Vi offers to the users in this domain, BSNL's offer in the same lines is quite new. BSNL had launched the unlimited data at night offer for users to celebrate the occasion of Eid. Note that the unlimited data offer from both BSNL and Vi has a slight difference. Vodafone Idea Unlimited Data at Night OfferVodafone Idea offers users truly unlimited data at night with select prepaid plans. This offer is called 'Binge all Night', and it allows users to consume data without any fair-usage-policy (FUP) limit on consumption, and it also doesn't affect the normal FUP data of the plan for the day. Vi plans also come with the benefit of Weekend Data Rollover, which is just a bonus on top of the 'Binge all Night' offer. Only prepaid plans above Rs 249 come with the above-mentioned offer for the users. The Binge all Night offer is applicable between 12 AM and 6 AM every day.BSNL Unlimited Data at Night OfferBSNL is offering users truly unlimited data at night with its Rs 599 prepaid plan. The plan retains all of its benefits but now will also offer users the option to consume unlimited amounts of data between 12 AM and 5 AM. This is a work-from-home plan that also offers users truly unlimited data and 100 SMS/day. There is also an over-the-top (OTT) benefit of Zing music application included. Users get 5GB of daily data with this plan, and all the freebies are active for 84 days which is the validity of the plan. Neither of the operators, including Reliance Jio or Bharti Airtel, offers their users such a prepaid plan. BSNL users can also go with cheaper prepaid plans and get up to 3GB daily data, which is also sufficient for many. Both BSNL and Vi are struggling to operate and are also providing the best offers in India. Thus it's quite evident that while an operator can provide really good offers, it will only be successful if it can provide consistent network services. The offer from Vi has been there for quite some time now, while the offer from BSNL is very new. BSNL might discontinue it after some time, so get the benefit while you can.
