| Leakster Suggests OnePlus Will Be Flagship Brand for Oppo Posted: 03 Jul 2021 09:00 AM PDT ![]()
After each and every passing week, we get to hear more and more about the future of OnePlus, with a special emphasis on Oppo. Just yesterday, we learnt that the company would now be merging the codebase of OxygenOS with Oppo’s ColorOS, so as to offer better support. Today, however, there are some interesting hardware-based details that are a bit shocking. This shocking detail comes via a Chinese leaker on Weibo, who released some details in regards to Oppo’s hardware side of things. The leaker goes by the name Arsenal on the social media platform and as part of his leak, he has provided some reliable information in the past, which gives us a bit of hope regarding this leak. He disclosed, in a Weibo post from yesterday that OnePlus will be its sister company’s high-end product line. He mentions that OnePlus devices will be positioned in a similar manner to the Huawei P series of devices, with the primary selling point being the camera performance of the offerings. What Does the Leaker Have to Say?The leaker also mentioned that OPPO's Find X series will be Oppo’s second flagship line. The post states that the Find X series will be the first to debut new and freshly developed features, with the aim to position the offerings in a similar manner to Huawei's Mate series. Whilst we did expect for there to be changes to how both companies operate, the ones revealed today are just shocking. Nonetheless, it does seem like a sensible decision and one that will likely be in effect starting next year. OnePlus fans will also be pleased to learn that future models will offer even better cameras. Whilst the leaker is reliable, do take this with a pinch of salt as always since there might always be changes. In other OnePlus and Oppo related news, a forum post went live yesterday mentioning that there was a new schedule for OxygenOS updates which is tied to the company's shared resources with Oppo. The forum post added that it would also mark the merging of the codebases for OxygenOS and Oppo's ColorOS that would allow both skins to live on a more stable and stronger platform. Do remember though, it does not effectively mean that OxygenOS and ColorOS are the same or will be the same. |
| 1 Billion Smartphones Will Support Wireless Charging by the End of 2021 Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:30 AM PDT ![]()
In the last couple of years, mobile charging has become so different that if one were to take a look back 4-5 years, they would simply scoff at what used to be tolerable in charging. 5W or 10W charging that took an eternity to charge up the smartphone, resulting in a massive waste of time. In contrast, however, we can see that in 2020 or 2021, users go for devices that offer at least 30W charging, which can fully charge a smartphone with a decently sized battery in just an hour, with certain devices even offering 65W charging that can fully charge a device in 30-35 mins, which is quite shocking. Another charging based advancement is wireless charging, which does not require a regular charging port to be inserted and rather one is instructed to place the handset on a pad that can wirelessly charge a device. What Does the Report IncludeNow, a recent report has revealed that nearly one billion smartphones on a worldwide basis will have wireless charging by the end of 2021. This comes in the view of smartphone vendors like Xiaomi, OPPO, Samsung and suppliers such as Infineon, MediaTek, Samsung SDI and Qualcomm powering the rise when it comes to wireless charging via the use of proprietary solutions that charge a battery faster than ever. As per a market research firm Strategy Analytics, the base of wireless charging capable smartphones will reach a record-worthy one billion mark by the end of this year. Since its introduction nearly 10 years ago, wireless charging has shifted from a niche to an in-demand charging solution fit for flagship devices. Ken Hyers, Director at Strategy Analytics stated that by 2026, the company forecasts it will top 2.2 billion wireless charging enabled smartphones as growing middle classes in emerging market countries expand the addressable market for higher-end smartphones with the technology. This will come despite the higher cost of wireless charging additions to the smartphones, as sales are strong in the Asia Pacific region wherein 49% of devices have a wireless charging base installed. Ville-Petteri Ukonaho, Associate Director at Strategy Analytics mentioned that the Fast-growing middle classes in China, India, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam and elsewhere in the Asia Pacific region mean that a growing proportion of the region’s population can afford the technology. Yiwen Wu, Senior Analyst added that the Asia Pacific region would remain the single largest market for wireless charging solutions for the foreseeable future and will continue to grow its installed base share of wireless charging enabled smartphones. |
| TRAI Will Likely Make Suggestion on Vodafone Idea Relief Issue: DoT Posted: 03 Jul 2021 08:00 AM PDT ![]()
The country's only financially ailing telecom company Vodafone Idea has found itself in a stifling situation owing to its extremely low tariffs and the dues which it owes to banks and the government. To add to its woes, Vodafone Idea has acquired spectrum in March for which payment remains to be paid. Vodafone Idea is also the only telecom operator which is loss-making in the country. The government's position on this entire issue has been to favour the telecom industry in general and not just one telecom operator. This means that any support if it comes from the centre will favour every operator and not just one. Vodafone Idea Unable to Raise Tariffs by ItselfVodafone Idea Managing Director, Ravinder Takkar, has already pointed out that the company cannot by itself raise tariffs because of the extremely competitive situation that prevails in the market right now. On the other hand, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio seem to be in no mood of raising tariffs. Even though they might be suffering under the burden of low ARPU, but their comparatively better off financial standing has allowed them enough of a runway to sustain these rates. The same is not the case for Vodafone Idea. To speak about the finances of Vodafone Idea, an ET report has pointed out that the telecom company owes Rs 8,292 crore to the centre for its auction purchases earlier this year. It has also announced a Rs 25,000-crore fundraising plan with a mix of equity and debt. Government to Seek TRAI RecommendationsThe government through a DoT official has expressed its standing saying that it would help the industry as a whole and not just one telecom operator. While Vodafone Idea has been raising concerns about some relief and a one-year payment moratorium. The Telecom Department has also been in favour of a four-player industry structure with three private players and one public telco. Regarding this situation, the DoT will now approach TRAI and seek its views on the matter. It has also remarked that it will have to see the cost structure of other telcos as well to better understand the situation of Vodafone Idea. |
| BSNL Rs 94 STV Offering 3GB Data Among Other Benefits Posted: 03 Jul 2021 07:40 AM PDT ![]()
BSNL plans withdrawal and launch is always a work in progress. However, as of late, BSNL has been intensifying its portfolio rework progress to make its plans more attractive and lure more customers to its network. These changes in the BSNL prepaid portfolio combined with the free SIM and BSNL 4G network is likely to impress the customers to port in from other telecom operators to BSNL. In the latest move, BSNL has made a slight tweak to some of its low price prepaid vouchers and converted them to Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs). The PVs in question are the Rs 75 and Rs 94 prepaid vouchers. BSNL Chennai has updated the change about these new PVs conversion to STVs. It is worth noting that some of the benefits of the plans have also undergone changes. Now, these plans will retail as STV94 and STV75. BSNL STV75 DetailsAs for the STV75, which as per the namesake, comes for Rs 75, offers 100 minutes of calling to any network in the Home LSA along with free national roaming. Even if you have to make calls to Mumbai or Delhi, you need not worry about it, as this plan covers it without any additional cost. The data offering in this plan is 2GB which has to be consumed within 60 days. Post the freebies exhaustion; the consumers will be charged at 30 paise per minute for calling. In addition, they also enjoy free PRBT for 60 days. BSNL STV94 DetailsThe STV94 for Rs 94 comes with a similar plan structure as it offers 3GB data instead of 2GB with a longer validity of 90 days. The calling benefits remain the same with free 100 minutes, free voice calling in the Home LSA and even national roaming with calls to Mumbai and Delhi. The consumers also get free PRBT from BSNL, and after the freebies, the BSNL plan offers calling at 30 paise per minute. In other news, BSNL is also offering a solid Rs 200 commission to its retailers to increase its business. This is bound to fasten up the sales of BSNL SIM, which are currently available for free for the consumers when they do a recharge of Rs 249. The same FRC is going to get the retailers a commission of Rs 200 as opposed to Rs 180. These new tactics are a signal that BSNL is intensifying the battle between itself and the private telecom operators, which will reduce the distance between the private and the public telco. |
| Facebook and Google Comply With New IT Rules, Twitter Still Reluctant Posted: 03 Jul 2021 06:15 AM PDT ![]()
The new IT rules have been a point of contention between Big Tech companies and the Indian Government. The most flared-up tussle has been between the Government of India and Twitter. The new IT rules issued by the government caused much ruckus with the social media companies, with Twitter facing the wrath of police as well. However, in a new positive turn of events, companies like Facebook, Instagram and Google have issued compliance reports with the new IT rules, as part of which they have removed a lot of content from their platforms among many categories. One social media which is still missing from this list is Twitter; hence it's safe to say that the tussle between Twitter and the Government of India continues to persist. Google and Facebook Appreciated for Positive StepThe new IT rules have been issued to curb the blatant abuse and misuse of these platforms by anti-social elements and to remove content that might be abusive and threatening to the users and security and integrity of the nation. As per the new PTI report, three officers required as per the new IT rules include a compliance officer, a grievance officer, and a nodal officer. These three positions have to be filled by the companies by Indian residents. Previously, one of the companies had appointed a foreigner as a grievance officer, which led to further flaring up of issues. Twitter Still in Defiance of New RulesThe new issuance of compliance reports by Google, Facebook, and Instagram has been lauded by Ravi Shankar Prasad, IT minister, who remarked that this is a big step towards transparency in his tweet. India reports having 53 crore WhatsApp users, 41 crore Facebook users, and 21 crore Instagram users. Because Twitter has not yet complied with the new IT rules, it has lost its intermediary status, which means that it is now liable for the abusive content posted on its website. Google remarked that it removed 59,350 pieces of content, whereas Facebook "actioned" around 30 million pieces of content across 10 violation categories in the May-June month. Instagram, on the other hand, actioned 2 million content pieces across nine categories. Now it remains to be seen what’s Twitter’s take on this matter. |
| BSNL Retailers to Get Rs 200 Commission on Every SIM Activation Now Posted: 03 Jul 2021 05:30 AM PDT ![]()
Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has been working at a guns-blazing speed to intensify its presence all across the country. The public telecom operator has already been doubling down on its broadband connections and has had a meteoric month on the back of 1.1 lakh new connections. However, the telecom operator is also serious about its new prepaid subscribers. First, the news of free 4G SIM in the Kerala circle, and now it is also giving incentives to the retailers to work hard to drive new SIM cards and First Recharge Coupon (FRCs) sale. In a new update, we have come to know that BSNL will be offering Rs 200 as commission to the retailers who get a new SIM card activated. BSNL Raises Commission to Rs 200It is worth noting that the news of BSNL offering commission on new SIM card sales is not unheard of. BSNL has been offering this commission for a long time now. But the rates of this commission have always varied. This comes as a good sign since the commission rate has gone up by Rs 20 as compared to the previous figure. Previously, the On The Fly (OTF) commission was fixed at Rs 180 for the DSAs / OCSCs / REDs. But, now it has been raised again to Rs 200 per SIM activation, which was the first figure with which BSNL has debuted this commission for the retailers. Applicability on Rs 249 FRCAnother caveat in this scheme is that the retailers should sell the Rs 249 FRC, which is a very popular First Recharge Coupons with new BSNL subscribers. This plan is a very attractive one as its offers 2GB daily data for 60 days. Along with this, the subscribers will be able to enjoy free unlimited calling. Also, if you are worried about the daily calling being limited to 250 minutes a day, then you should not think about the same because those days are behind BSNL, and now the public telecom operator is also offering truly unlimited calling. Hence, if you are a DSAs / OCSCs / REDs of BSNL, then it's a good time for intensifying the sales. Even for the subscribers, this is good news since the BSNL 4G SIMs are now being offered free of cost in a lot of circles. |
| Much Anticipated Samsung Galaxy S21 FE Visits FCC, Launch Imminent Posted: 03 Jul 2021 04:34 AM PDT ![]()
Samsung seems to have a lot of products scheduled for launch, from foldables to smartphones to wearable devices; a whole load of products might just be dropped in the coming months. Out of them, two noteworthy ones include the foldables, which include the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and the Galaxy Z Flip 3, as well as a new smartwatch that should be part of the Active lineup of products. Amongst all these products, one that might skip your mind is the Fan Edition of the Samsung Galaxy S21. We do not have any idea as to when it may be launched but, it seems that the wait for the same might not be as long as one would expect since the device or something similar to what it is has passed FCC. What Do We Know Via the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE FCC ListingThe FCC site on Saturday published a certification page for a smartphone with the model number SM-G990U, which has long been connected to the S21 FE. Do note that the Samsung Galaxy S21 in the US was launched under the model number SM-G991U, which resembles the latest listing to quite some extent. The FCC documents further reveal that the phone in question will come with support for mmWave 5G. This is great news for anyone who was perplexed as to whether or not the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE would be restricted to the lower Sub-6 based 5G. The listing also includes information that reveals the smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 888 SoC, which goes under the model number Snapdragon SM8350 as well as offer Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC support and Wireless Power Transfer that indirectly suggests support for wireless charging. The device could also make use of a 45W charging as 45W charging support is listed in the report. Whilst the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 will come with support for MST as per the FCC listing; no such mention was present for the S21 FE or a device that is part of the S-series of devices. It is worthwhile to note that when a phone passes through FCC, it is a sign of an imminent launch, and with this listing, we can expect the device to launch in either July or early August, given that the device is indeed the much anticipated Samsung Galaxy S21 FE. |

| Vodafone Idea Confident About Its Future in India Posted: 03 Jul 2021 02:00 AM PDT ![]()
Vodafone Idea is facing gloomy days in the Indian market due to heavy losses, amortisation, finance costs and more. To relieve the pressure from its subscribers and interest holders, the Managing Director (MD) of the telco, Ravinder Takkar stated that the company is planning to raise funds in the coming period. Also, Vodafone Idea is not inclining towards any plan B. Takkar expressed his confidence over the AGR dues reduction. He feels that the AGR dues of Vodafone Idea will also be reduced shortly. One of the biggest challenges in the road of Vodafone Idea's hassle-free journey in the Indian telecom sector is the low tariff plans. The telecom giant cannot increase the tariff plans unilaterally due to intense competition in the market. Also, the lack of floor price is another hurdle that is slashing the growth of financially burdened telco. Vodafone Idea has to Pay Rs 9,000 Crore AGR Dues in March 2022Takkar was hinting towards a massive Rs 25,000 crore fundraising deal which the telco announced last month. However, even after 6 months of discussion, the deal was in the planning stage, which worried the potential investors. Talking about the AGR dues, Vodafone Idea has paid Rs 7,854 crore to DoT. Also, the telco has to pay nearly Rs 9,000 crores in March 2022. Vodafone Idea Expects the Government to Slash AGR Dues Nearly 50%Tracing back to last week's development, Vodafone Idea urged the government to slash the AGR dues. The telco highlighted the calculation errors made by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The calculations made by DoT does not shed light on the previous payments made by Vodafone Idea. Also, the double-counting of revenue and deductions not granted on roaming charges are some points which the telco considered while filing the modification plea in the Supreme Court. Vodafone Idea has shared the financial figures and revealed a loss of Rs 6,985.1 for the quarter ended March. The subscriber erosion, high depreciation, one-time expenses continue to be the hurdle for Vodafone Idea. Even though the telco has been under heavy financial distress, the funding and expansion plans continue to be the guiding light. |
| OnePlus 9T May Sport 108MP Hasselblad Sensor, Launch Expected in Q3 2021 Posted: 03 Jul 2021 12:41 AM PDT ![]()
Earlier this year, a report had suggested that OnePlus, the company that has been at the front of multiple changes that might impact the company’s offerings down the line, might not offer a Pro model for the upcoming OnePlus 9T, which brings incremental upgrades to the regular number-series of devices that are launched in the first half of the year. In relation to this, during the launch of the last T-series smartphone, which was the OnePlus 8T, the brand had claimed that there was no reason to launch the OnePlus 8T Pro, owing to how the OnePlus 8 Pro, the generation’s flagship offered all sorts of premium-grade specifications, making the need for a T-series Pro model unwarranted. A new leak has surfaced suggesting that the OnePlus 9T will be launched in Q3 of 2021, which marks a slight change in the timeline for the company since the T-series of devices is launched either in September or October. What Else Do We Know About the OnePlus 9TApart from the month of launch, the latest info has also suggested that the handset could feature a Hasselblad quad-camera setup, much like the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro, but, with a 108MP primary sensor. The leak also suggests that the device could run on ColorOS 11, which would fit in with the latest announcement from the company. In terms of previous details that had been leaked, the OnePlus 9T might sport a Samsung LTPO OLED display coupled with 120Hz refresh rate support and a resolution of FHD+. Certain other things might be similar to the OnePlus 9 Pro, owing to how the 8T was quite a bit similar to the 8 Pro, at least in some regards. We can expect the OnePlus 9T to borrow certain key features from the 9 Pro, two of which could be support for wireless charging and a Snapdragon 888 processor. The company is yet to share any sort of information regarding the OnePlus 9T, but, considering the leaks and rumours, we can expect the device to slot between the OnePlus 9 and 9 Pro models. If the leak does come out to be correct, this device would also be the first smartphone to feature a 108MP sensor, something that Samsung has been offering for two generations of its S-series of devices. Alongside the OnePlus 9T, the company is also expected to launch the next Nord series of devices, dubbed the Nord 2, which is rumoured to sport a design resembling the OnePlus 9 series of devices. |
| Reliance Jio Giving 5GB Data Without Immediate Cost Posted: 02 Jul 2021 11:11 PM PDT ![]()
Reliance Jio users can now get 'emergency data' from the company. This move from the company will allow users who don't have sufficient funds to recharge their numbers or purchase data packs without any worries. The company has capped the maximum limit of data per user at 5GB. Note that this data is not completely free and will be offered to the users as a 'loan'. It is a great initiative from Reliance Jio since there are many users living below the poverty line who don't have enough money to recharge their SIM cards because of the recurring lockdowns resulting in incapacity to earn daily wages. Reliance Jio to Offer Users 1GB of Emergency Data 5 TimesThe company will not be offering a total of 5GB of data together. Jio users can take the 1GB data pack from the company, which costs Rs 11, as a loan and pay later. Any user can take a maximum of 5GB of data from the company. This means that the maximum amount of loan that the company is offering to the users is Rs 55. But there are some terms and conditions associated with the offer. First of all, users must have an active pack. Further, the data that's been taken from the company as a loan will also expire once the base pack of the user expires. Even though 1GB of data costs only Rs 11, for some people in our country, that's the cost of their one-time meal. This is why this is a very good initiative from Reliance Jio that's going to help millions of Indians who can't recharge immediately because of financial restrictions but are in need of data desperately. This is a model that other companies, including Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel, can also opt for. Because at the end of the day, it is not just business, but also help offered to the customers. It shows that the company thinks about its users and their needs a lot. The 5GB of data that's offered as a loan can be very significant for people who need it for completing their important tasks and work. |
