Bharti Airtel, Vi Both Offer This Plan, What Should You Choose Posted: 20 Aug 2021 07:53 AM PDT Airtel and Vodafone Idea happens to be two of the most renowned telecom operators of India. The telcos are known for their range of prepaid and postpaid plans. Even after the private telecom operators have introduced tariff hikes and changes in the prepaid structure, there are affordable prepaid plans available for subscribers. If you are not aware, Airtel discontinued the Rs 49 prepaid plan in lieu of asking users to opt for the Rs 79 prepaid plan. Similarly, Vodafone Idea has discontinued the entry-level Rs 49 prepaid plan. In this article, we will look at a similar priced prepaid plan offered by Airtel and Vodafone Idea. Bharti Airtel Rs 129 Prepaid PlanAirtel has been making changes in its prepaid and postpaid structure recently to hike the ARPU and elevate the financial position of the company. Airtel Rs 129 prepaid plan offers data and voice benefits to users who wish for an affordable prepaid plan. Under the plan, Airtel offers 1GB of internet data for 24 days. Apart from this, users also get truly unlimited calling benefits and 300 SMS. Once the SMS limit is reached, Airtel will charge Rs 1 for local and Rs 1.5 STD per SMS. As for additional benefits, Airtel offers 30 days free trial of Amazon Prime Video, free hello tunes, Wynk music subscription. Not only this but, users will get access to Airtel Xstream.Vodafone Idea (Vi) Rs 129 Prepaid PlanVodafone Idea Rs 129 prepaid plan overpowers the offering of Airtel in Rs 129 prepaid plan. Under the plan, subscribers get 2GB of internet data along with truly unlimited calling benefits. The service validity of the prepaid plan is 24 days which is similar to Airtel. 300 SMS for the entire validity period is also included in the plan. Apart from data, calling, and SMS benefits, Vodafone Idea does not offer any additional streaming benefits. Vodafone Idea 1GB internet data and a truly unlimited calling plan are available for Rs 109. However, the service validity of the prepaid plan is 20 days, and no outgoing SMS facility is included in the prepaid plan. If we compare the similar offering, Vodafone Idea offers extra data at the same price. Since the validity of the prepaid plans is the same, the additional 1GB of data offered by Vodafone Idea can be crucial for subscribers for work or entertainment needs. However, Airtel wins the race in terms of additional benefits. While Airtel offers Airtel Xstream, hello tunes and Wynk Music subscription, there are no additional benefits available in the prepaid plan offered by Vodafone Idea.
Data Consumption in India Expected to Hit 40GB Per Smartphone Posted: 20 Aug 2021 06:49 AM PDT Data consumption in India is "expected to grow over three-fold to 40GB per smartphone" by 2025, says Doron Arazi, chief executive officer at Ceragon Networks, a company that offers wireless backhaul and fronthaul solutions. Arazi said that India with over 62 crore internet users has the "world's second largest user base" and that the user base is also set to increase to 90 crores by 2025. The CEO at Ceragon Networks revealed that the company has around 50% market share in India and that Ceragon Networks is the "indisputable market leader" in the country. Ceragon Networks Expects 5G Commercial Launch in India in Late 2022Further, Arazi in the second quarter earnings call on August 2, 2021, said that the second quarter bookings for Ceragon Networks were the "highest in three years, especially North America, Europe, and India." The company earlier announced its second quarter results, with Ceragon Networks recording US$68.6 million (around Rs 510 crores) in revenue in the quarter, translating to an 9.9% year-over-year (YoY) increase. "In India, our strongest region in terms of booking, multiple Tier 1 operators placed follow-on orders for which we will support multiple network expansion projects to help providing nationwide coverage, and prepare operators’ network for 5G," Arazi said in the second quarter earnings call. In late July, Ceragon Networks announced that it "received follow-on orders from multiple Tier 1 mobile operators in India" worth over US$35 million (around Rs 260 crores) in its second quarter. The company said the "large network expansion projects" placed by the telecom operators in India were "prompted by several triggers" including the spectrum auctions held in March. Additionally, Ceragon Networks said that the work-from-home and the study-from-home practices caused by the COVID pandemic was the "second trigger" for the operators to place bulk network expansion equipment orders. Ran Vered, chief financial officer at Ceragon Networks in the second quarter earnings call also said that the company witnessed "very strong bookings coming from North America, India and Europe." "The increase [in revenue] is mainly attributed to strongest sales in North America and India," Vered said in the second quarter earnings call. "Our strongest region in terms of revenues for the quarter was India, reflecting ongoing deliveries for our main customers in the region." Arazi said that the 5G trials in India are "planned for the second-half of 2021" and that the "5G spectrum auction is expected in the first-half of 2022," with the "commercial launch by the second-half of 2022." The CEO at Ceragon Networks said that the 5G rollout in India will "further expand digital revolution" and that "there will be a demand for higher capacity in all corners of the country." Crucially, Arazi said that Ceragon Networks "will be there to meet" the additional demands in India. "Indian operators are testing different E-band Solutions, and ours are getting a lot of traction," Arazi said. "I believe the combination of our market leadership position, our strong brand name, plus what’s unfolding in the country will translate to more business for us."Delayed 5G Launch Has Multiple Benefits: OoklaIt has to be noted that multiple reports in the recent months including Ericsson Mobility Report have suggested that the data consumption and the smartphone user base would increase in India. In June, Ericsson, a communication service provider in its mobility report said that the average data consumed by users in India is set to hit around 40GB per month in 2026. The company said that the average data consumed by a smartphone user was at 14.6GB per month in 2020, up from 13GB per month in 2019. The report also highlighted that the smartphone subscriptions will increase from 81 crores in 2020 to over 120 crores in 2026, with 4G user base increasing from 68 crores to 83 crores. Further, the Ericsson Mobility Report highlights that the 5G user base in India will touch 33 crores at the end of 2026. In mid-August, Ookla, the company behind the Speedtest platform in a report highlighted that the "three major" telecom operators in India are all "busy conducting 5G trials" across the country. The firm also highlighted that the operators in the 5G trials have "achieved very impressive 5G speeds." While Ookla highlights that the country "clearly lags behind markets that have already begun 5G deployment," it said that the delay in 5G launch does have multiple benefits including "lower 5G smartphone prices."
BSNL Will Operate MTNL Mobile Operations In Mumbai Posted: 20 Aug 2021 05:34 AM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) will soon start operating the mobile operations of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) in Mumbai. Officially, BSNL will take over MTNL's mobile operations in Mumbai from September 1, 2021. The report comes directly from the Times of India (TOI) and suggests that the heavy market competition and depleting number of customers on top of the underutilised infrastructure, including wire networks and cell towers, had hindered the growth of MTNL in Mumbai. This might not be confusing for many since a merger between the companies was meant to happen. What Will BSNL Do In Mumbai Now?As per the publication's report, BSNL's work will primarily focus on expanding the current 4G mobile infrastructure of MTNL and also come out with aggressive marketing strategies and introduce clever tariffs as it does throughout India. In terms of numbers, MTNL only has 5 lakh mobile connections and 15 lakh landline connections in the Mumbai circle. It is worth noting that BSNL was already working as an outsourced agency for maintaining the mobile networks of MTNL. Now, as per the agreement between the companies, BSNL will further direct its staff to work and improve the future operation of MTNL in Mumbai. As for the expenditures that will be incurred, including spectrum charges, license fees, electricity bills, and more, will be shared through a common pool. This should be a good thing for both MTNL and BSNL. MTNL has largely been unsuccessful in marketing itself as a first choice operator for users living in Mumbai and Delhi. BSNL taking over the telco's mobile operations would mean that MTNL's plans might be marketed in a more aggressive manner now. As per the copy of the letter that was obtained by the publication, every liability and asset of the company will be of MTNL, and BSNL won't have any say over there.
Vodafone Idea Close at Rs 5.95, Here Is Why Posted: 20 Aug 2021 04:38 AM PDT Just when Vodafone Idea (Vi) stock seems to be gaining momentum, a news report comes in and tanks that flow. The telco's stock closed at Rs 5.95 on Friday, the last day of the week. It had previously closed at Rs 6.45 and opened at Rs 5.95 today morning. Vi's stock touched a high of Rs 6.40 and a low of Rs 5.90 on the trading day. There's a solid reason why this stock is down right now. It is multiple false reports that were making rounds yesterday morning. Vodafone Idea LF Fiasco Had a Negative Impact on the StockYesterday morning, certain reports were circulating online that said Vodafone Idea (Vi) had failed to pay the license fee (LF) dues for the first quarter of FY22. This portrayed the telco in a negative light for the entire day until a spokesperson from the company clarified that the LF dues have already been paid. Until Vi's spokesperson could say anything, the damage had already been done. A ton of users had no clue about Vi's spokesperson's comments. This might have led to them pulling their money out of stock. Thus today, on Friday, Vi's stock has closed 7.75% lower. Until and unless a major relief package from the government comes, it is hard for the telco's stock to reach the Rs 10 price point yet again. A lot of the company's investors (both retail and institutional) might have lost faith, given the stance of the promoters in the matter. The promoters don't want to infuse any more capital into the company, which signals that they have lost their confidence in the telco's future. Regardless, Vi's stock has been an attractive sight for traders as it has been quite volatile for the past few weeks, given all that's happening in the industry. It will be interesting to see whether the stock will open even lower or higher on the next market day.
BSNL Announces New 1 Year STV Under Rs 1500 Posted: 20 Aug 2021 03:23 AM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has launched a new special tariff voucher (STV) for users under Rs 1,500 PAN-India basis. The STV costs Rs 1,498, and it comes with a validity of 1 year. The special thing about this STV is its benefits. Users get 2GB of daily data with the voucher, and post-consumption of the fair-usage-policy (FUP) data, the internet speed will drop to 40 Kbps. This voucher is perfect for people who are looking for cheap data prepaid plans for the long term. Especially the students and people working from home can utilise this voucher to complete their tasks. This new STV will be available for users across India starting August 23, 2021. BSNL Makes Changes to Rs 1,999 and Rs 2,399 PlanFirstly, the Rs 2,399 prepaid plan that used to offer users 365 days of validity will now come with 425 days which means 60 days more. This offer will stay in place from August 21 to November 19, 2021. Users further get 3GB of daily data, unlimited voice calling, and 100 SMS/day with this plan. There are additional benefits of Eros Now and BSNL Tunes offered to the users. Then with the Rs 1,999 plan, users will get 100GB of additional data. This plan also comes with a validity of 365 days. Further, with the plan, users are entitled to get unlimited voice calling and 100 SMS/day with Lokdhun content and an Eros Now subscription. Earlier, the company used to offer 500GB of regular data with the plan, but now that has been bumped to 600GB. Post consumption of the FUP data, the speed for the users will drop to 80 Kbps. The benefits of the Rs 1,999 plan will be changed for users across India starting August 23, 2021. These benefits will be available for both the existing and the new customers of the telco. These are truly innovative offers from the company, but there’s no big impact that they will have on the market.
India Committed to Build Semiconductor Industry: Union Minister Posted: 20 Aug 2021 02:39 AM PDT Goyal Wants India to be AatmanirbharAccording to a PTI report, Goyal said that both the semiconductor industry and the shipping industry could be strengthened by pushing for local production. As per the union minister, this will help India in becoming Aatmanirbhar. It is worth noting that last week, N Chandrasekaran, Tata Sons Chairman, said the company is planning for manufacturing critical components necessary for the semiconductor industry. This will also help the group's auto business which is facing a shortage of semiconductors too. The arrival of the semiconductor industry in India would mean that the foreign exchange outflow can be reduced to some extent. At present, almost each and every company assembling and manufacturing electronic products in India relies on semiconductors to be shipped from outside the country. Further, if a solid semiconductor industry can be built in India, it would bring more employment opportunities for the Indians. This will further result in a boost for the economy and will help electronics companies reduce their cost for manufacturing products. At the end of the day, it might mean that the overall price of the products can be brought down significantly since they are manufactured on a scale. Hopefully, India can take advantage of this opportunity and gap in the market to build more jobs.

Samsung Paid Rs 300 Crore for 4G Gear Import Posted: 19 Aug 2021 10:19 PM PDT Samsung has paid Rs 300 crore to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) as customs duty for importing 4G radio equipment into India. The DRI was investigating the company's alleged tax evasion in importing the 4G radio equipment to India. The DRI has concluded that Samsung had been classifying its equipment under the zero-duty category so that it could be exempted from paying any taxes. As per the agency, Samsung will now have to pay Rs 500 crore for exempting taxes. Samsung Has Already Paid Rs 300 CroreAccording to an ET Telecom report, out of the total amount that Samsung needs to pay, the company has already paid Rs 300 crore. A source aware of the matter told the publication that Samsung made the payment on Wednesday (August 18). The leftover balance will be paid by the company as the investigation proceeds. The source added that Samsung was the only company that was importing its equipment under the concerned category head. This was the largest payment that the company has made in a single day to India. The report mentions that the payment from Samsung has already been credited into the account of the government. For the unaware, Samsung is the largest vendor for 4G radio heads when it comes to volume. The 4G radio heads are used to transmit and covert 4G airwaves. Earlier last month, the DRI had conducted an investigation at the Mumbai and Delhi offices of Samsung to check the suspected evasion of import duty on the 4G radio equipment. Upon investigating, it was found that Samsung was importing its 4G equipment, claiming an exemption notification that was not applicable on the equipment and thus, the company was not paying 20% of taxes it needed to. At the same time, all the other companies were paying 20% taxes on the same equipment. Thus the DRI has asked Samsung to pay Rs 500 crores.
Redmi 10 Prime Might Come to India Soon Posted: 19 Aug 2021 09:36 PM PDT Redmi 10 Prime might be well on its way to India. A new Xiaomi smartphone has been spotted at the IMEI database listing with the model number – 21061119BI. According to other reports online, the model number belongs to the Redmi 10 Prime for India. However, now a new listing at the Bluetooth SIG certification platform of a device with the model number 21061119BI strongly suggests that it is the Redmi 10 Prime that might be launching in India very soon. According to a Gizmochina report, there are multiple model numbers registered on the Bluetooth SIG certification platform – 21061119AL, 21061119AG, 21061119DG; and all of these belong to the Redmi 10 devices. The new listing (21061119BI) suggests that the device will be launching in India as the Redmi 10 Prime. On top of the listings, a popular tipster who goes by the name Kacper Skrzypek (@kacskrz) tweeted that the Redmi 10 Prime will be coming to India as the rebadged Redmi 10 launched globally. Redmi 10 Prime Expected SpecificationsIf the Redmi 10 Prime is indeed a rebadged Redmi 10, the device might come with a 6.5-inch IPS LCD display with a punch-hole cutout at the top housing the selfie camera. The display might further be able to support 90Hz refresh rate with FHD+ resolution (1080×2040 pixels). The smartphone might come with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. At the rear, the device may come with a quad-camera setup where the primary sensor is a 50MP lens paired with an 8MP secondary ultra-wide-angle lens, and two 2MP sensors (depth and macro). The device might come with a 5000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The expected launch date of the Redmi 10 Prime in India is September. It is highly unlikely that Xiaomi will launch the Redmi 10 Prime in India anytime before that. It will be interesting to see the price point the company goes for launching this new smartphone.
Bharti Airtel Files Review Petition for AGR Dues Rectification Posted: 19 Aug 2021 08:15 PM PDT It looks like even Bharti Airtel won't leave the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues case so lightly. The company has moved to the Supreme Court (SC) and filed a review petition against the order, which the same court had announced last month. The SC had denied the telcos' requests for asking the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to rectify the errors that have been made while calculating the total AGR dues amount. Thus, following in the footsteps of Vodafone Idea (Vi), Bharti Airtel has filed a review petition in the court to seek justice. Bharti Airtel Shouldn't Leave the Matter EasilyIt is great to see that the telco is not leaving Vodafone Idea alone in the matter. Vi had filed for the review petition, and now Airtel has done the same, notes ET Telecom. The AGR dues which have been wrongly calculated have additional interests and more penalties which has surged the total amount that the operators had to pay in the first play by a huge margin. Thus the operators had earlier filed a petition at the SC to push DoT to rectify the errors. Vodafone Idea had said that it wants to communicate with the SC that it only wants the errors to be rectified, nothing else. Vi must be very agitated from the decision of the SC as it had earlier said that it is "inconceivable" that the SC is not allowing for the mistakes to be corrected. Bharti Airtel must be feeling the same agitation as even it has to pay thousands of crores extra because of the calculation mistake that the DoT had made. It would be great if the SC rules in favour of the telcos looking at the review petition hearing. It will ensure that a huge amount of debt is cleared from the shoulders of both Vi and Airtel. Further, it will attract new investors in a jiffy to the industry.
5G vs 4G: How Is One Different From The Other? Posted: 19 Aug 2021 06:39 PM PDT The cellular industry carries out a major upgrade to the wireless infrastructure every decade. In the 2000s, 3G dominated the segment while 4G dominated the previous decade. Now, as we have stepped into the new decade, the 5G networks have already debuted in the US. This might make you think about how 4G and 5G cellular networks are different. Differences Between 4G And 5GBelow are the major differences between the two cellular network technologies.Speed5G is predominately differentiated from 4G in terms of speed as it is the next-generation cellular technology. This makes sense as each next-gen cellular tech has been significantly faster than the previous tech. Currently, 4G speeds can reach speeds of up to 100 Mbps while the real-life performance is not above 35 Mbps. In comparison, the 5G networks are touted to have the potential to be 100 times faster than 4G. While its theoretical speeds are said to be around 20 Gbps, the real-life performance could range from 50 Mbps to 3 Gbps. The speed depends on the band of 5G being used.LatencyLatency is another measure, which is the amount of time taken by the information to travel from one point to another. It is a delay in the data transfer irrespective of the network’s speed. In 4G, the latency is 50 ms while the same is expected to shrink down to 1 ms in 5G networks. The reduced latency will be critical for various applications that will let 5G play a major role in the use of connected devices that rely on the cloud for data including self-driving cars.CoverageThe other major comparison between 4G and 5G is the range of coverage. Even after a decade since the debut of 4G services, it is seen that a majority of rural and remote regions in the country have very poor 4G connectivity. Now, with the arrival of 5G services, it looks like the coverage will be extended but with time. It is limited to a few cities at the launch and then will take almost the same time as 4G to reach different parts of the country. We can expect different implementations including high-, medium-, and low-band 5G with varying speed and bandwidth.
