Reliance Jio Might Place 5 Million Units of JioPhone Next Order With UTL Neolync Posted: 24 Aug 2021 11:40 AM PDT Almost every smartphone company looks for another company that can assemble the components to make a complete device. In the same way, Reliance Jio might soon place an order with UTL Neolync for 5 million units of the JioPhone Next. The price of the JioPhone Next might be Rs 3,500. The development comes from an ET Telecom report, but the order is not final yet. According to the publication, Reliance Jio is only "aiming" to place an order of 5 million units of the JioPhone Next with UTL Neolync. Reliance Jio Wants to Bring Entire Order to Market In Six MonthsGoing by ET Telecom's report, Reliance Jio wants to bring the entire order of the JioPhone Next (5 million units) in the market for the customers. But the company is also aware of the ongoing chipset shortage that's pushing smartphone manufacturers to scale production down, resulting in increased costs. For the unaware, the JioPhone Next will arrive in the market on September 10, 2021. It is worth noting that Reliance Industries Limited (RIL's) wholly-owned unit, Reliance Strategic Business Ventures Ltd, had invested Rs 20 crore in Neolync Solutions earlier this month. UTL Neolync is a joint venture between Neolync Solutions and UTL Group. The JioPhone Next has been referred to as the most affordable 4G smartphone in the world. The actual price of the product would only become clear once the company launches it on September 10, 2021. This will be Reliance Jio's bet on garnering the interest of 2G subscribers in India. The JioPhone was a good offer. But it didn't interest the people who wanted an affordable 4G smartphone and not a feature phone. Thus, the barrier of entry to 4G networks with a smartphone still persisted. But now, Reliance Jio is here to alleviate that pain for the Indian users by offering the very affordable JioPhone Next.
WhatsApp for Android Might Get a Colour Change Soon Posted: 24 Aug 2021 10:04 AM PDT WhatsApp keeps on working with its visual elements to make the app interface as soothing as possible for the users. While the company has made multiple changes to the app in terms of design, WhatsApp has never gone too hard on its colours. The company has stuck with the dark green accent for the app interface for as long as one can remember. However, that might change soon since a report from WABetaInfo suggests that WhatsApp might be changing the colour scheme of its application. Here's all you should know. WhatsApp New Colour SchemeOne thing worth noting here is that the new WhatsApp colour scheme will be available for both the light and the dark mode. The new colour scheme that WhatsApp is going for is light green. It will look the same both in the Dark and Light mode of the application. The new colour scheme will be applicable to different windows of the application. The changes can already be seen on the beta version of WhatsApp.WhatsApp New Payments ShortcutWhatsApp is further going to bring a new payments shortcut for the users in India. The feature can already be seen on the beta version of the application. This payments shortcut would enable users to make payments to their contacts at faster speeds. The icon of the new payments shortcut would appear between the camera icon and the attachments icon on the bottom of the chat window. Not only this, but WhatsApp has also added new Payments Backgrounds for users in India. This new feature will allow users to personalise the payments they make through the application. It is a feature that is very similar to that of what Google Pay offers to its users. But there's one thing that can't be ignored; people don't trust WhatsApp a lot with their data. That is one of the reasons why WhatsApp isn't able to garner a big chunk of the market when it comes to online payments.
Nokia G20 Review: Good Display, Decent Camera, But Know This Posted: 24 Aug 2021 06:56 AM PDT Nokia G20 launched a while back, and I have used the smartphone for over a month now. There are many things interesting about this smartphone. Nokia has tried to do something good, but I don't believe it worked the way the company intended to do it. Regardless, the experience of using the smartphone was decent. I wouldn't say too good, but only decent. This is because while there are things that are good about this device, there are things where Nokia can improve aggressively. Let's start with the design and the body of the smartphone. Nokia G20 Review: Design and Body The Nokia G20 that I got was the blue colour variant. The body is completely plastic covered, and so you won't get that premium experience you might be used to with the flagship or the mid-range smartphones. There's a round-camera setup at the rear, which is perfectly placed and just below the camera bump is the LED flash. The Nokia branding is right at the center, engraved in a silver finish. There is a USB Type-C port at the bottom, along with the speakers. The 3.5mm headphone jack is present at the top. At the front, the Nokia branding is at the bottom of the screen, and there's a teardrop notch housing the selfie sensor at the top. On the left side of the body, you get a dedicated Google Assistant button just below the SIM tray. Honestly, the Nokia G20 does feel a little bulky in my hands. Its width is comfortable, but the device is not very light. On the right side, there's a power button which is also the fingerprint sensor of the device, and right above it, there are volume rockers. Nokia G20 Review: Display The Nokia G20 comes with a 6.5-inch HD+ LCD display with maximum resolution support of 1600 x 720 pixels. The aspect ratio of the screen is 20:9, and there's a 2.5D cover glass at the top. The touch is very responsive, but I don't feel satisfied with what Nokia has done with the brightness of the device. The Nokia G20's maximum brightness just doesn't feel enough. Other smartphones in the same price range can deliver more brightness. This makes the device a little hard to use under direct sunlight. While playing a game, since its touch-sampling rate is decent, I didn't face any lags in commands or movement of the players. The display can be surely worked on by Nokia. Nokia G20 Review: Performance and BatteryThe Nokia G20 comes powered by the MediaTek Helio G35 SoC. I expected the chipset to power the smartphone just enough so that I wouldn't face any lags. But that wasn't the case. While operating the phone, there were random stutters from time to time which made the overall experience a little downgraded. Upon switching to different camera modes, there's a little lag as the system tries to adjust to the new setting. You can use the smartphone for normal and lightweight games, but it isn't made for heavy games. The device tends to get warm quite fast, and it doesn't deliver the kind of experience you would expect from a decent smartphone. Applications such as Instagram and WhatsApp will run quite smoothly, though. Video streaming experience should also be good given that you are inside your home and there's enough darkness in the room for your screen to ensure that everything is visible comfortably. In terms of battery, the device is quite impressive. Upon a single complete charge and with basic use, I could use the smartphone for at least 1.5 days before I needed to charge it again. However, I am not too disappointed with the G20. These are the kind of things and issues that you can expect will emerge with an entry-level smartphone.Nokia G20 Review: CameraThe Nokia G20 comes with a quad-camera setup at the rear, where the primary sensor is a 48MP lens paired with a 5MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, 2MP macro sensor, and 2MP depth sensor. For clicking selfies, users get an 8MP sensor at the front. The app interface of the camera app is typical Nokia style, and thus you will find it very familiar if you are used to a Nokia smartphone. The device allows you to click pictures and record videos in both the normal camera mode and the ultra-wide-angle mode. There are multiple modes that users can shoot pictures in. In the 'more' category, there is panorama mode, macro mode, and more present for the users so that they can take their photography to the next level. Talking about the camera performance, the normal camera picture is quite good in terms of capturing colours, but it drops focus now and then from the subject. At the same time, the wide-angle-sensor images are well focused on the subject but lack colour accuracy. The macro camera of the device is impressive as it captures details vividly, and the images look very beautiful.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Nokia G20 Review: Price and ConclusionThe Nokia G20 comes with a set of specifications that is kind of 'okayish' for being an entry-level smartphone. Honestly, you can't expect anything more from it. The device has some upsides but some downsides as well. If you are looking for a smartphone in the Rs 13,000 range, there are alternatives present to the Nokia G20 that you can surely look at. The Nokia G20 is selling in a single memory variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage for Rs 12,999. It is available in 'Night' and 'Glacier' colour variants.![]()
Need Of the Hour for the Telecom Industry is a Streamlined Security Clearance System Posted: 24 Aug 2021 05:44 AM PDT The National Cyber Security Coordinator (NCSC) has been designated as the apex body in India to scan for any security lapses in the telecom equipment companies and their supply chains. The events from 2018 and beyond in the telecom industry, especially in the United States, have left a bitter taste in the mouth of governments all across the world. Given the due tensions and the especially precarious situation which exists between India and China, there is more stress on the security of the equipment since the majority of it comes from across the Indo-Sino border only. However, the current method which the NCSC has adapted has been proven to be woefully slow and is causing massive breaks in the supply chains for both the vendors and the telecom companies in India as well. Industry Hit With Multitudes of ProblemsIndia's telecom industry remains on shaky ground as is. While Vodafone Idea is struggling financially, every other company has got its own set of challenges. In such a condition, the industry needs help from all sides, and the existence of speed-breakers in any area of the industry, has a ripple effect for the entire mass of the telecom fraternity, and that includes consumers as well. Reliance Jio has been able to climb up on the download speed charts, thanks to the deployment of new equipment, and companies like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea are boasting of 5G field trials. While the rest of the world has seen 5G on their phones, India still remains stuck on the 4G networks, with the sight of 5G still far away from the horizon. The absence of required equipment just makes it worse. The telecom equipment manufacturers from China are obviously at a disadvantage due to security reasons, and because of pricing concerns, the European vendors of the equipment remain on the back footing. In a scenario, where the industry is drained out financially and unable to afford equipment of higher pricing, and the Chinese equipment remains stuck in the supply chain due to delays in approval, the telecom operators of the country are bound to find themselves in a pickle. The Changes Required in the Certification ProcessThe verification process for both the verified product and verified supplier remains grossly informal in nature right now. While the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme of the government is one of the major impetus for the industry, it remains untapped if there are roadblocks such as the ones discussed above. The NCSC should be supplied with the required human resource, along with the setting up of a more robust and reliable standard operating procedure. Until the supply chains remain slow for the provision of telecom equipment, the 5G field trial and both capacity and coverage enhancement are going to remain hit. It is quite probable, while we have domestic troubles regarding the security of the equipment, the same concerns are going to be mirrored across the border as well. In such a situation, to help the telecom industry, the government should act fast to reduce the time required to approve a product and supplier without giving up the due diligence on the process.
Bharti Airtel Bank Guarantees Not to be Invoked: SC to DoT Posted: 24 Aug 2021 05:03 AM PDT The Supreme Court (SC) has directed the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to not invoke bank guarantees (BGs) against Bharti Airtel. The government was seeking the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues from Bharti Airtel that Videocon Telecommunications (VTL) owed. The amount sought by the telecom department was Rs 1,376 crore. According to an ET Telecom report, DoT had ordered Bharti Airtel to pay the due amount within a week or else it will have no other option but to invoke the bank guarantees. However, SC has stepped in on the matter and asked DoT to not invoke the BGs right now. Bharti Airtel Doesn't Want to Pay AGR Dues of VideoconA bench led by Justice L Nageswara Rao let Bharti Airtel go to the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) for seeking relief over the issue. In its statement, Bharti Airtel said that it has already paid more than 10% amount from the AGR dues before March 31, 2021, as per the SC order. Shyam Divan, representing Bharti Airtel said that Bharti had total dues of Rs 45,356 crore and it did not include any AGR dues of buying spectrum from Videocon. Divan said that those dues were of Videocon and only that company should be liable to pay it. Further, Divan claimed that DoT had already sought the amount it is asking for right now from Videocon in the company's insolvency proceedings.e The DoT is after Bharti Airtel to seek the AGR dues on the spectrum that Airtel purchased from Videocon. The telecom department had filed an affidavit in April 2021 that in the SC saying that Bharti Airtel is refusing to pay the AGR dues it owes to the government on behalf of Videocon. Thus, DoT had resorted to threatening Airtel for invoking the bank guarantees in case it didn't pay the amount itself. But the SC has directed DoT not to do this.
Broadband Plans With IPTV Will Take the Lead in the Times to Come Posted: 24 Aug 2021 04:28 AM PDT The broadband providers of India, whether they are big names or not are innovating more and more to lure subscribers on a mass scale. The topmost operator when it comes to subscriber addition has surprisingly been the public telecom operator, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). The Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are trying loads of combinations of benefits to attract the subscribers and these include more speeds, unlimited data, free add on benefits like OTT subscriptions among many more. However, there is one benefit that broadband companies have not yet become used to and is very rarely seen. Perhaps, the only big name in the industry which is offering Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is Reliance Jio. Presence of IPTV In the Current Broadband ScenarioThe Mukesh Ambani led telecom operator is one of the few names offering IPTV with its broadband subscription of JioFiber. When you take a JioFiber connection, you will also be provided with a TV connection which will be routed over the internet rather than the traditional dish and satellite setup which the DTH companies provide. This IPTV service removes the need for a conventional Dish setup which requires a hardware installation, and on top of that a separate subscription fee and a Set-Top Box as well. The presence of an IPTV connection removes the need for all of these things. The subscribers just have to sign up for a single broadband connection, and the monthly charges, if any, are added to the single bill. Why IPTV Proliferation is Around the CornerLike in the case of JioFiber, most of the subscribers have found their DTH subscriptions to be redundant and in some cases have switched exclusively to IPTV services. Besides, the proliferation of OTT is already reducing the dependency on the conventional cable TV setup. To make it worse for the DTH operators, the new tariff regime rolled out by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has made things tougher for both the subscribers and broadcasters by pinching their finances. While the consumers have found the new TRAI tariff regime to be more expensive, the broadcasters are also unhappy with the regime on the ground of losing revenue. This means that the subscribers are looking for alternatives to their traditional DTH connections. In such a scenario, the broadband operators can provide some relief to the consumers. There are of course multiple benefits to IPTV services, however, the broadband providers do not have the resources required to relay IPTV services, whether they are in the form of insufficient fibre layout or others. However, the fact remains that while most of the benefits are becoming equated across all broadband plans and companies, the one providing something more would also be the one to take the lead in this competitive market. While Reliance Jio could not repeat the success of 4G LTE in the case of JioFiber, it has for sure changed the market in little ways, and IPTV remains one of the pillars of that change. From multiple side, whether it is consumers, market forces, the new tariff regime, DTH operator or the broadcasters, the dawn of IPTV is surely around the corner.
Samsung Galaxy M32 5G Price In India Leaked Posted: 24 Aug 2021 03:07 AM PDT Samsung Galaxy M32 5G is going to launch in India tomorrow. Just a day before the launch of the smartphone, its price has leaked. The Galaxy M32 5G is expected to be a slightly downgraded version of the M42 5G. A new report from IANS has revealed that the price of the Galaxy M32 5G suggests that the Galaxy M32 5G will launch between Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 range. The publication has cited industry sources while revealing the expected price. But there are many in the industry who believe that the smartphone won't cost anything above Rs 20,000. There's a reason behind it. Samsung Galaxy M32 5G Might Not be Priced Above M42 5GThere is a strong chance that Samsung might not price the Samsung Galaxy M32 5G above the Galaxy M42 5G. Currently, the MRP of the Samsung Galaxy M42 5G is Rs 20,999. Thus launching a downgraded version in the same series for a higher price just won't make sense for the company or the customers. Thus, there are people who believe that the Samsung Galaxy M32 5G will be priced under Rs 20,000.Samsung Galaxy M32 5G SpecificationsMultiple specifications of the smartphone have already been confirmed by looking at the listing on Amazon. The Amazon India page has revealed that the Samsung Galaxy M32 5G will be powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 720 SoC. Going by the exclusive report shared by Mobile91 last week, the device might come with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The Samsung Galaxy M32 5G will run on One UI 3.1 based on Android 11 out of the box. There is a quad-camera setup at the rear where the primary sensor is a 48MP lens paired with an 8MP wide-angle sensor, a 5MP depth sensor, and a 2MP macro sensor. The device will come with a 5,000mAh battery inside, but there's no word on the kind of charging support it will get.
Bharti Airtel Shows Promising Recovery: ICICI Securities Posted: 24 Aug 2021 01:06 AM PDT The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), yesterday released the monthly telecom subscription data for June 2021. Looking at the data, ICICI Securities said that Bharti Airtel is showing promising recovery. The analyst signalled that while Airtel still hasn't recovered from its loss in May 2021, the positive growth can't be ignored nonetheless. As per the analyst report, both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel added 2.4 million active subscribers in June 2021. However, Airtel's active subscribers’ number is marginally more than Reliance Jio's. Bharti Airtel Has 344 Million Active Subscribers, What's Jio's Performance Here?Bharti Airtel has a total of 344 million active subscribers out of its total subscriber base. As for Jio, the number of active subscribers in June 2021 stood at 340 million which is only 4 million behind from that of Airtel. Jio added 2.4 million active subscribers in June 2021 which is not a bad number, but it is lesser than the month of May 2021 where it had added 2.8 million active subscribers. According to the analyst, the reason behind the declining trend in addition of active subscribers for Reliance Jio is the dipping excitement and interest around the JioPhone offer launched in March 2021. As for Vodafone Idea, bad things continue to happen. Vi lost 4.9 million active subscribers in June 2021. The telco's difficulties will keep on increasing if it can't reduce the subscriber churn rate soon. Vodafone Idea's total active subscriber base stood at 242 million in June 2021. Bharti Airtel is staging a good recovery and might show better results in the month of July 2021. It is worth noting that during May, where Airtel had lost a large number of subscribers, India was battling through the second wave of COVID-19. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are expected to keep adding new customers while Vodafone Idea is expected to keep losing them based on the current market trends. This is because of Vi's capped capacity for investing in its networks.
Vodafone Idea Just Refarmed 3G Spectrum to 4G In Multiple Cities Posted: 23 Aug 2021 11:28 PM PDT Vodafone Idea (Vi) has been refarming the 3G spectrum to 4G since last year. The telco has done it in phases throughout the country, picking one circle after another. Vi plans to slowly remove its 3G services from India and become a 2G and 4G only operator. Now, Vi has refarmed the 3G spectrum to 4G in Maharashtra & Goa. Multiple cities, including Pune, Nashik, Aurangabad, Solapur, Kolhapur, Goa, Jalgaon, Nagpur, Nanded, Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad, Amravati, Akola, Bhiwandi, Ahmednagar, Vasai, and Ulhasnagar are now expected to get better 4G speeds throughout. Vodafone Idea Deploys Additional Spectrum in Maharashtra and GoaVodafone Idea has deployed an additional spectrum in the Maharastra and Goa telecom circle. The telco has deployed 5 MHz of additional spectrum in the 900 MHz as well as 2100 MHz band. With the additional spectrum, users of the telco living in the telecom circle will be able to enjoy better indoor coverage and 4G speeds. With the current spectrum refarming and deployment exercise, Vi now holds the largest quantum of spectrum in the Maharashtra circle across 900, 1800, 2100, 2300 and 2500 bands. In the past year, Vi has invested a lot in its 4G networks across the country and has been trying to upgrade the network capacity so that users don't have to face congestion. With that, the telco has also been working to improve the 4G network coverage within India, which has been a major pain point in its operations. Now, users living in the Maharashtra and Goa telecom circle should be able to get better coverage and better 4G speeds from the network of Vodafone Idea. This should help the telco in attracting more customers in the region and also retain its old ones. Vodafone Idea has refarmed the 3G spectrum to 4G in multiple states and cities of India already, and thus its 4G network PAN India should be much faster than it used to be.

More such offers from the company are expected to arrive since BSNL will be taking over the operations of MTNL in Mumbai. |
Indian Telcos Might Get Some Relief With AGR Dues Posted: 23 Aug 2021 09:00 PM PDT Indian Telecom operators might get some relief in regards to adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The telcos, including Airtel and Vodafone Idea, were asked by the Supreme Court (SC) to clear the dues in 10 instalments over a decade. Since the AGR dues amount is not being rectified, it has put a lot of pressure on the telcos as the total dues amount in thousands of crores. But as per an ET Telecom report, the government might ease the pressure on the telcos by allowing them to pay the same amount over 20 years in 20 instalments instead of 10. This would reduce the money they have to pay to the government in relation to the AGR dues by up to 50%. Government Has the Power to Help TelcosThe Indian government is working on a relief package for the telecom sector. One of the many ways the telcos can be helped is by reducing the load of AGR dues. The telcos will have to pay thousands of crores less in a single year if the number of instalments is increased from 10 to 20. It is worth noting that the cabinet had earlier proposed the telcos to pay the AGR dues in 20 years. But a SC ruling changed that to 10 years. The government doesn't usually overrule what the SC has said, but as per Vodafone Idea (Vi) CEO Ravinder Takkar, it has the power to. However, Takkar said that it would be helpful if the SC and the government are both aligned in their vision to help the telcos. Vodafone Idea would be very happy to see the AGR dues pressure dropping since it will be able to utilise all that extra cash to invest in its networks and 5G technology which is expected to be the cash cow for the operators in the next 3 years. Note that none of this is confirmed, and all of it is just speculation until and unless a firm announcement from the government comes.
