JioPhone 2021 Offer Allowed Jio to Gain RMS In June

Posted: 26 Aug 2021 06:53 AM PDT

Reliance Jio Reliance Jio has become the only operator in the April to June 2021 quarter that saw a gain in revenue market share. According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) data reviewed by ET Telecom, Jio has become the only operator amongst Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea (Vi) to gain revenue market share (RMS) in April-June 2021 quarter. The JioPhone offer announced in March this year has helped the telco a lot. Further, Jio saw strong growth in the revenue that came from national long distance (NLD) services.

Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel RMS Went Down Because of This

Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel saw their RMS going down in April-June 2021 quarter. This is because their revenues from NLD went down. According to TRAI data analysed by major analysts, Jio's RMS grew 242 bps quarter-on-quarter which took its RMS to 39.5%. At the same time, Bharti Airtel's RMS dipped by 82 bps sequentially to 34.9%, while Vi's RMS fell by 119 bps to 18.6%. No one can ignore that during April-June 2021 quarter, the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak, and there were lockdowns that affected the industry and the telcos to grow at the rate they should have. Reliance Jio performed well on the back of the new JioPhone 2021 offer. According to TRAI data, the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel grew 10.5% and 1.3% sequentially to Rs 18,100 crore and Rs 16,000 crore, respectively. At the same time, Vodafone Idea's AGR fell 2.5% quarter-on-quarter to Rs 8,500 crore. But the sector is expected to recover in the July-September 2021 quarter as markets reopen and people can consume services at full flow. Even the effect of the JioPhone 2021 offer should subside in the coming months. At present, everyone in the market will be focusing on the JioPhone Next that is slated to launch on September 10, 2021.

BSNL Employee Union Unhappy With Govt Decision

Posted: 26 Aug 2021 05:05 AM PDT

BSNL Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) employee union is not happy with the government’s decision of selling the company's tower assets to the private sector. BSNL employees have expressed their dissatisfaction with the government's decision of selling the tower assets. For the unaware, the Indian government has plans to sell over 14,917 towers owned by BSNL and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL). According to an ET Telecom report, P Abhimanyu, General Secretary, BSNL Employee Union, said that employees of the state-run telco are opposing this move from the government since selling the tower assets will only help the private sector and no one else.

BSNL Employee Union Might Go On Nationwide Protests

The BSNL employee union might soon go on nationwide protests. The body is currently in talks with other groups, and collectively, they will go on a nationwide protest. As per the publication's analysis, a statement from Abhimanyu portrays that if the assets are sold to the private sector, it would be the first step towards the privatisation of BSNL and MTNL. The fear of BSNL employees is very understandable. This is because the assets are going to the private sector, and it is not going to help BSNL or MTNL leverage the situation in any manner. Thus, the deal is not very fruitful for the state-run telcos. According to the National Monetisation Pipeline (NMP) plan, the Narendra Modi led government wants to sell 14,917 mobile towers of BSNL and MTNL to the private sector. In addition to this, the government wants to sell state-funded 2.86-lakh kilometres of BharatNet’s optic fibre network along with 400 railway stations, 150 trains, and 26,700 kilometres of National Highway. BSNL employees don't want this to happen since they are not going to benefit from the many in any manner. There is no confirmation on whether a nationwide protest is going to take place or not. Regardless, it doesn't seem like the government will change its decision.

Mi Band 6 The Xiaomi Mi Band 6 is what a lot of Indians have been waiting for. Mi Bands have truly become a fitness statement around the world. Since the time Mi Band 6 launched in China, fans have been waiting for Xiaomi to launch it in the Indian market as well. The Mi Band 6 is more than what I thought it would be. The huge display just takes my heart away, and it is just an experience to look at such a big screen. The Mi Band 6 stands out in a lot of ways; let's see what's special about the fitness band.

Mi Band 6 First Impressions: Design, Body and Display

Mi band The Mi Band 6 looks a lot like the Mi Band 5. The only thing is, the display size is bigger. It is a 1.56-inch AMOLED display, and I really like the colours on the screen. The brightness is also solid, and there's tempered glass at the top with an anti-fingerprint coating. The device's dimensions are 47.4 x 18.6 x 12.7mm, and the strap's length is adjustable (155 – 219mm). It is super light and easy on the hands. The strap is made of high-grade and durable silicone material. The screen is responsive, and that's something I appreciate. For some reason, the display feels more responsive than all the previous generation Mi Bands. Xiaomi has designed the Mi Band 6 in such a way that it is 5 ATM water-resistant, meaning you can take it for swimming whenever you want. As per data obtained by Huami labs, the Mi Band 6 display is approximately 50% larger than the display of Mi Band 5. So it will be a huge change in experience for anyone shifting from the Mi Band 5 to Mi Band 6. The 1.56-inch AMOLED display comes with support for 326PPI. The body of the Mi Band 6 looks very solid and durable. It just gives me the confidence that I can take it anywhere I go.

Mi Band 6 First Impressions: Battery and Function or Health Features

Mi Band 6 price The Mi Band 6 took less than 2 hours to charge completely from zero, which is what the company promised as well. There is a 125mAh LiPo battery inside, which can run up to 14 days as per the company's claim. It is something that I will have to test out myself. There are three main sensors inside the fitness band, including the PPG heart rate sensor, 3-axis accelerometer sensor, and 3-axis gyroscope sensor. The fitness band can connect with a number of applications, including Mi Wear App, Mi Fit App, Strava, and more on Android 5 and iOS 10 and above devices. Inside the retail box, you will find the Mi Smart Band 6, 1 strap, 1 user manual, and a magnetic charging cable. The charging happens through a magnetic mechanism just like it did on the Mi Band 5. The 6 activities which the Mi Band 6 can detect automatically are – indoor rowing, running, walking, treadmill running, cycling, and elliptical training. The Mi Band 6 comes with a suite of health tracking features. These include SpO2 tracking, a PPG sensor for accurately monitoring 24/7 and a stress tracker. The Mi Band 6 can also track the sleep of the users and show the quality of sleep they are getting.

Mi Band 6 Price and Overall Impression

Mi Band New The Mi Band 6 is priced at Rs 3,499 in India. Modestly, the price looks very high given none of the Mi Bands have even come close to the Rs 3,000 price point in India. But then it can be argued that none of the Mi Bands had such exciting features or a 1.56-inch AMOLED display. The Mi Band 6 looks honestly great and very promising. There's nothing more I could have asked Xiaomi to add to their latest Mi Band. Honestly, there's something about the Mi Band 6 that is pushing me to keep it on my wrists all day long and even at night because it can track sleep. The overall design of the Mi Band 6 is very cool. Yes, it doesn't look that new, but the features and the larger display just take it a notch higher in the market with its competitors. Kudos to Xiaomi for doing a great job with the Mi Band 6.

Bharti Airtel Planning to Raise Capital Soon

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 10:49 PM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel is planning to raise capital very soon. The company's board is set to meet on August 29, 2021. The board meeting will be focused on discussing fund raising plans. Bharti Airtel can raise funds through equity or debt linked instruments which will strengthen its balance sheet. The telco might be raising capital for paying off the upcoming dues in the first half of 2022, which includes spectrum and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues totalling Rs 13,000 crore.

Bharti Airtel Fund Raising Will Add to Woes of Vodafone Idea

Bharti Airtel's board will meet on August 29, 2021, for discussing fund raising. Post fund raising, Airtel's balance sheet will become very strong to the likes of Reliance Jio, and this will add to the woes of Vodafone Idea (Vi). It is worth remembering that even Vodafone Idea has been trying to raise capital for a long time but has been unsuccessful in doing so. In a notice to the stock exchanges on Wednesday, Bharti Airtel said that it is planning to hold a meeting for the board of directors on Sunday, August 29, 2021, where the company will discuss raising funds through different mediums as deemed appropriate by the board. Despite the good results for June 2021 and fund raising talks, Bharti Airtel's stock has slipped more than 2% on Thursday morning. The telco's stock opened at Rs 610 and fell down to as low as Rs 591.20. But at the time of this writing, the company's stock is trading at Rs 599.20, which is 2.16% down. The company's already profitable and wouldn’t have required the fund raising exercise if it didn't have thousands of crores in statuary payments coming soon. It is worth noting that Bharti Airtel has already raised $12 billion in the last 24 months. At the same time, Bharti Airtel will also require money for rolling out 5G networks next year.

Tata Sky Set-Top Boxes Made In India Unveiled

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 09:01 PM PDT

Tata Sky Tata Sky, India's number one Direct-to-Home (DTH) operator, has just unveiled the first batch of 'Made in India' Set-Top Boxes (STBs). The company had made an announcement in FY21 that it will soon start making STBs within India to support the government's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. Tata Sky had partnered with Technicolor Connected Home and Flextronics for manufacturing its STBs in India. There will be a lot of positive impacts of this announcement in India.

Tata Sky Is Also Manufacturing Binge+ STB In India

Luis Martinez-Amago, President of Technicolor Connected Home, said Tata Sky and Technicolor would also be manufacturing the Android-powered Binge+ STB within Indian boundaries. Amago said this is a major step for Technicolor in the Indian market, where the company plans to invest even further. Harit Nagpal, MD & CEO, Tata Sky, said the company would help with increasing employment opportunities in India. Nagpal further said that this would help Tata Sky in reducing the lead-time and assured that the STBs manufactured within India are tested and re-tested before they are shipped out of the facilities to ensure high-quality performance. Tata Sky and Technicolor, in partnership with Flextronics, started mass production of the STBs in India in June 2021. The manufacturing facility is in Chennai. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown the companies that they can't rely on international shipping and need a local manufacturing facility to ensure that the market never stays dry because of supply constraints in the international routes. The cost of manufacturing the STBs might be more for Tata Sky initially because it won't be able to take advantage of the economies of scale. The company must have also spent a ton of money on building a manufacturing facility, bringing assembly machines, train personnel, and more for building its STBs in India. This is a great move and one which should pay off in the near future.

Starlink, OneWeb to Change How India Consumes Internet

Posted: 25 Aug 2021 06:31 PM PDT

Starlink Satellite broadband is going to be the next generation of internet connectivity. Yes, it will be comparatively costlier than fiber broadband, but it will have use cases that are much evolved and will help enterprises a lot. A Few of the companies that plan to bring satellite broadband connectivity in India is Starlink and OneWeb. Starlink is backed by Elon Musk's SpaceX, while OneWeb is backed by the Bharti group. Thus, both the companies are quite popular and have the kind of resources that will set them up on the path of success wherever they plan to provide services. I genuinely believe that Starlink and OneWeb will change the way Indians consume the internet. Here's why.

Starlink, OneWeb to Bridge Connectivity Gap

The telecom growth in India has largely been due to the urban areas. While rural areas of the country are well equipped with network services, there are still blank spots and remote regions where people have to travel miles before they can get hold of a network signal. While telecom operators can invest in these regions, it would be a loss-making venture for them since there won't be as many users, and most importantly, there won't be many high paying customers in the region to really make profits. So the telcos knowingly ignore particular areas of the country because it just doesn't make sense for them to invest money there. However, Starlink and OneWeb won't be limited by this. Their satellite signals will be able to reach every nook and corner of the country without any additional investment required. Both the satellite broadband service providers will be able to offer internet services in the rural and remoter regions of the country where the mobile networks of telecom service providers (TSPs) are not present. This will be a game-changing step towards making India truly digital. With the help of satellite internet, everyone in rural and remote India will be able to access internet connectivity and leverage the tools online to be successful and communicate the way everyone else does. However, the satellite broadband services won't be as cheap as mobile plans or fiber broadband plans offered to customers around the country. Regardless, with time as the technology gets globalised and there are more competitors, the price of satellite broadband services will also fall. How fast it will happen, there's no saying. But there's one thing; with the help of satellite broadband, every Indian will have a chance to get on the internet and leverage the medium to do whatever he/she wants.
