WhatsApp on iOS Could Soon Offer End-to-End Encryption for iCloud

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 10:13 AM PDT

WhatsApp WhatsApp has been promising end-to-end encryption in its application, which, for those of you unaware, basically means that any message or image that you send via WhatsApp is provided with the highest level of security on offer. Whilst this is an appreciated feature, it is not the same when the user is storing the same messages in the cloud as a backup, usually done to safeguard your data for the future. The chat backup that is stored in the cloud, be it Google Drive or iCloud can be looked at by third party services via cloud service providers, but they are usually not end-to-end encrypted.

WhatsApp Will Finally Offer End-To-End Encryption on Cloud Backups

Now it seems that in a bid to provide more privacy, WhatsApp is working on securing the cloud backups for the user’s WhatsApp chats, as it was recently spotted testing the same on an Android Beta build, but, today, it seems to have prepared the same functionality for users on the iOS side of things. A new screenshot revealed by WABetaInfo on Twitter hinted towards the same, with the screenshot showing an option to allow for end-to-end encrypted backup that can be backed up on iCloud to protect it from non-consented access. The publication added that the encryption tool would be available in the near future. This move is well suited for data privacy nerds since Apple seems to be working on similar privacy-related features, with the company announcing its plans to eradicate distribution of CSAM or Child Sexual Abuse Material on iOS. The feature will come with a hashtag tool that can scan photos stored on iCloud to locate child sexual abuse instances. In other WhatsApp related news, multi-device support on WhatsApp was recently made available to users on iOS, with the initial release on offer for users who are part of the Beta program. Multi-Device support, for those unaware, allows the user to receive and send messages on the Web version of WhatsApp without having to keep the WhatsApp app on the phone connected, something that both Signal and Telegram offer, At the time of release, it was revealed via WABetaInfo that the aforementioned end-to-end encryption of WhatsApp was impeding the feature, but, now, with the rollout on iOS, users will be able to use the app on their PC or laptop without having to keep their handset connected to the internet.

A Guide On How Much Internet Speed You Need

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 08:03 AM PDT

Are you looking for new internet plans? Choosing one might be more complicated than what you think of. Mostly, the plans are priced as per the internet speed and capacity you use. This might urge you to ask the question of how much internet speed do you need? Most internet service providers have a guide detailing the benefits offered by their various plans. However, some listings might upsell you claiming to offer faster speeds than what you need. Here, we will help you understand how much internet you need to pay for. Finally, each user will need different speeds and capacities.

What Speed You Might Need?

As per the FCC, anything that is faster than 25 Mbps is considered as an advanced service but it is closer to the minimum. It was asked to raise the bar to 100 Mbps for broadband. Any service you use on the internet, you will want faster speeds than 25 Mbps. With the increased media consumption, it makes sense to choose for some speed closer to 100 Mbps. Do keep in mind that an internet plan assuring to offer fast internet doesn't guarantee to provide fast internet speeds. The internet speed you experience can slow down due to network congestion, interference from nearby networks, poor router management and more.

How Much Internet You Use?

As of now, many people are working from home, which translates to more internet usage than ever before. If you work from home, play online games or stream a lot of HD videos, then you will need more internet and a faster speed than others who would just browse the internet. For instance, it is recommended to have 10 to 20 Mbps speed for video calling, 25 to 35 Mbps speed for online gaming and 35 Mbps speed for 4K streaming.

Number Of People Or Devices

This is one of the important factors to look out for when you are searching for an internet plan. A standard household might have two to four people with 10 to 15 devices including laptops, smartphones, gaming consoles, smart TVs and other gadgets) connected to the internet. If you use all these devices consistently, then the internet speed should cover all of these.

Data Caps

The most overlooked factor is the data caps. All internet plans come with a speed cap. You can use your internet for activities such as video streaming and online gaming that will consume a lot of data. Once the speed cap is reached, the speed will drop to as low as 10 Mbps. Later on, until the pack is renewed, you can use it only for low internet usage, which could be painfully slow. So, keep these factors in mind before choosing an internet plan.

TRAI Tariff Order Hearing Adjourned to August 18, Broadcaster and Regulator Tussle Continues

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 06:55 AM PDT

TRAI NTO hearing adjourned The broadcasting companies in India, which include major names like Star India, Viacom18, ZEE Entertainment, and others, have been united in their tussle against the National. Tariff Order 2.0 for more than a year now. The broadcasters clubbed themselves under the umbrella of the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) and, with the method of the petition, opposed the NTO 2.0 put out by TRAI in January 2020. However, they received an unfavourable judgment by the Bombay HC, which upheld the constitutional validity of the NTO 2.0. Now the IBF has filed another petition in the Supreme Court opposing the order of Bombay HC. The hearing of this matter has been now adjourned to August 18 by the apex court.

Broadcasters Still Trying to Oppose NTO 2.0

To recall, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had brought the first iteration of the National Tariff Order back in 2019; after a lot of opposition, TRAI made some changes in the scheme and put forth the new rules in January 2020. What followed after was a barrage of complaints from the subscribers and a lot of legal opposition from the broadcasters, which continues to date. The NTO 2.0 caps the broadcasters’ ability to price channels as per their wish. As per the rules notified by TRAI, a channel can be priced with a maximum of Rs 19. There was also a rule in the NTO 2.0 that prohibited the broadcasters from pricing the channel as a-la-carte more than one-third the price of the channel in a bouquet. However, this was the only clause that was struck down by the Bombay High Court order in the earlier ruling.

Only One Strike by Bombay HC On NTO 2.0

Apart from this one strike on the NTO 2.0, on the grounds of being arbitrary, Bombay HC had said that the petition against the NTO 2.0 does not have any ground. It's worth noting that the NTO 2.0 had set the Network Capacity Fee of Rs 130 to be paid to the intermediaries, which are MSOs and DTH operators, on top of which the subscribers have to subscribe to channels that can be Free to Air (FTA) or pay channels priced at a maximum of Rs 19 per month.

Samsung to Offer Note Pack With Pre Orders of Galaxy Z Fold 3

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 06:19 AM PDT

S Pen Samsung is all set to launch the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 and a couple of other products at its Unpacked 2021 event, which is scheduled for August 11 at 7:30 PM IST. With the launch taking place later this week, we might get details regarding the availability of the product prior to the start of the event via leaks, but, for now, we know about Samsung and its pre-order offer wherein buyers are treated to extra goodies free of charge. Today, details in relation to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 pre-orders have been revealed, complete with the benefits that will be included for the potential buyers.

Samsung’s Note Bundle Is A Rather Grand Affair

According to leakster Snoopy (user @_snoopytech_ on Twitter), Samsung will offer a bundle dubbed the Note Pack with pre-orders of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3. The contents of this pack will consist of a charging case, an S Pen and a 25W charger, with the bundle supposedly being worth €89. In relation to this, the leaker shared an image that showed the pack and revealed the case, which is a special one that has been designed to house the stylus, whilst the previously mentioned 25W charger comes with a USB Type-C port with a UK plug. All of these items are available in black. There is a slight chance of the pre-order gifts varying from one region to the other, so, don’t get too excited, as there might be some additions or subtractions to the pre-order package. Unfortunately, the pre-order package hints at the chances of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 not shipping with a charger in the box, unlike the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is quite disappointing considering as to how it will be Samsung’s flagship product and could retail at near about $2000. Details that have emerged have hinted at the Galaxy Z Fold 3 featuring a 6.2-inch cover display with a larger 7.6-inch folding display with an in-display camera on top, with a triple rear-camera setup to the back and an IPX8 rating for the handset. In case you missed it, the pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3 were recently started in India with users having to purchase a Rs 2,000 VIP Pass to pre-book the devices. In terms of benefits, Samsung will be bundling in one SmartTag NFC, which is a rather bland deal in contrast to the aforementioned Note Pack. It will be interesting to see whether or not Samsung offers the Note Pack in India or it skips the same and forces consumers to buy the charger. Another possibility could be that Samsung opts to add the charger in the box and asks users to pay extra for the S Pen.

BSNL Alleges 4G Rollout Deviation by TCS Could Jeopardize Operations

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 05:37 AM PDT

BSNL Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited or BSNL, which, for those unaware is a State-run telecom company has been hit by another issue in relation to its 4G trial, with a TCS or Tata Consultancy Services led consortium having proposed around 128 deviations in the 4G equipment specifications, with the highest number of deviations proposed in the radio network, at a whopping 71, as per the Financial Express. Other similar specifications wherein the TCS led consortium proposed deviations to consist of the deferred core at 13, deferred radio at 20, networking at 6 and core at 18. BSNL in response has stated that if it were to accept these deviations, it would be jeopardizing its business prospects and hamper the customer experience, with the company also adding that it has written to the DoT or Department of Telecommunications enquiring as to whether or not it should accept these proposed deviations.

Why Is BSNL Under Fire In Relation to its 4G Rollout?

The telco further said the deviations included a couple of issues that were critical in nature and cannot be compromised for testing of the equipment under PoC or Proof of Concept or trials considering the same would be commercially deployed for rolling out the services post the trial. BSNL’s CMD PK Purwar said to the Financial Express that as per the office, acceptance of such deviations would cost BSNL in the future, once the rollout happens and it will not only jeopardise the interests of BSNL's business prospects but it would also impact the customer experience and BSNL's competitive strength. Do note that ITI and TCS have also submitted their bid with C-Dot, which is a state-run corporation for core technology and Tejas Networks for the radio, with the companies intending to conduct trials at Chandigarh. The bid has been submitted separately by the two companies. To add to this, HFCL as well as L&T have submitted their bid with the Mumbai-run PertSol for core technology and US-based Mavenir for radio. Tech Mahindra has also submitted its bid with Sterlite for radio and Pertsol for the core technology. BSNL has been quick to highlight however that other bidders have not yet submitted the deviated document, implying subtly that their product did comply with the specifications and, as a result, was ready for proper deployment.

Vodafone Idea Launches New REDX Plans, Hikes Tariff for Add-On Plans

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 05:01 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea's financial situation is known to all, and amidst all the worries, the telecom operator has pulled a new surprise out of the hat for its subscribers. Vodafone Idea's postpaid plans have received a major revamp with some heavy benefits, premium REDX postpaid plans making their way into the Vodafone Idea portfolio. It's worth noting that this introduction by Vodafone Idea can basically be termed as a tariff hike, as the baseline tariff for the subscription to Vodafone Idea REDx plan has gone up significantly.

Vodafone Idea Old REDX Plan of Rs 1,099

It's worth noting that Vodafone Idea is still offering the baseline Rs 1,099 REDX plan in a limited edition manner. Under this plan, the subscriber gets the benefit of unlimited data and calling in which the data is truly unlimited. The total SMS benefits remain at only 100 per month. Besides this, the subscribers get access to airport lounges and free Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions. They will also get access to Prime Music and Vi Movies and TV along with one international roaming trip in a year which is worth Rs 2,999 as per Vi. The Rs 1,099 REDX postpaid plan is only for a single member; if you want a REDX plan for more members, the prices only go up. The OTT benefits also include Disney+ Hotstar VIP.

Vodafone New REDX Multi-Member Postpaid Plans

The new REDX plan, which offers 3 members, comes for Rs 1,699. At the same time, the 5 member plan from Vodafone Idea is being offered at Rs 2,299. The unique thing about the multi-membered REDX plan by Vodafone Idea is the lock-in period which means the subscribers will have to be subscribed to these plans for a minimum period of 6 months, and if they leave the plans in between they will be charged Rs 3,000 exit fee. The rest of the benefits remain the same for the multi membered plans as well. This means the subscribers get unlimited data and all the OTT benefits and international roaming benefits. In hindsight, this move by Vodafone Idea appears to be an attempt at boosting its finances via its postpaid, high-paying subscribers, which are likely to give a slight bump to its Average Revenue Per User (ARPU).

Vodafone Idea Hikes Add-On Member Plan

Vodafone Idea has removed Rs 799 family postpaid plan and is now further offering the Rs 149 add-on plan for new users for Rs 249. So this is a direct tariff hike from the company, which means it is targeting higher ARPU.

Tata Group Chairman Shares Plans of Stepping Into 5G Chipset Manufacturing

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 03:46 AM PDT

Tata Group 5G Apart from the existing big tech groups like Reliance Jio in the industry, Tata Group is another big name in the industry when it comes to telecom equipment manufacturing. However, in a new move, Tata Group chairman N Chandrasekaran said that the company is looking to make a foray into semiconductor manufacturing in India. The exec also added that the total opportunity for the business venture is north of USD 1 trillion, and Tata Group has already set up a business to acquire this market. Currently, Tata Group's valuation soars north of $ 100 billion with presence all over the world. It's only been a few days since Tata Group announced its entry into 5G equipment manufacturing and has already started making some acquisitions of businesses to grow Tata Digital Services.

Chipset Manufacturing to be a Viable Business Avenue

Chandrasekaran also added that delving into the silicone business meant more than just designing chipsets and includes a vast array of things. He also said such a business requires high investment and facilities, which India currently lacks. Further, explaining the rationale, he said that with the pandemic raging, a lot of companies would look to shift their reliance away from China to different countries for their chipset needs; that is why India becomes the second base which is a huge opportunity. He remarked that India could benefit greatly from the geopolitical shifts that are happening in the world and most opportunities lay in the fields of high-tech manufacturing of electronics, precision manufacturing, assembly and testing and semiconductors in the medium term. The report comes from PTI. He made these statements at the IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s AGM.

Chairman Also Speaks on Other Tata Group Businesses

The Tata Group chairman also added that there are four themes that seem to be emerging on the horizon right now, which include rapid digital acceleration, a new approach to supply chains, a re-imagination of growth with environmental sustainability. He said that Tata Group happens to be developing businesses along these lines only, and that would include discretionary spending and new acquisitions. On the matter of environmental sustainability, he said that businesses should not have vague and distant goals and that there would be 20 new sources of power in the next two decades. Digital technologies and manufacturing, he said, would also add around 30 million jobs apart from creating new markets.

After Telcos, Trade Groups Also Oppose Mandatory 5Gi Standard

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 02:52 AM PDT

International Trade bodies 5Gi As India stands at the helm of adapting the fifth-generation network technology or 5G, a debate rages on in circles about the standards which should be adapted for the deployment of a 5G network. While some bodies and the government are in favour of the Indianised 5Gi standard, companies and their representative bodies like the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) are rooting for a more global approach to the matter. Now the pressure is not only coming from the companies but international trade bodies which are influential for India's trade relations with other countries as these are also pushing for a 3GPP based global 5G standard in India.

5G Global Standards to be in Favour of India

As per an ET Telecom report, the deployment of a 5Gi standard in India might prove to be a setback in the areas of supply chain security, vendor diversification, and alternative network architectures such as Open RAN which would be dependent heavily on the global standards. It's worth noting that a chunk of 5G deployment in India would be based on ORAN. Some of the bodies opposing 5Gi include the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), U.S. Chamber of Commerce US-India Business Council (USIBC), UK India Business Council (UKIBC), and US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). These bodies also said that the adoption of 5Gi would be detrimental to the development of the QUAD partnership.

Trade Bodies Count on Advantages of Globalised 5G Standard

The trade bodies said that India, the United States, Japan, and Australia would have to work together on the Quad Emerging Technology Working Group. For the unaware, Quad is an informal grouping of nations on a diplomatic level including the four countries of India, the United States, Japan, and Australia. The trade bodies further added that if 5Gi is adapted as a mandatory standard then it would discourage India from becoming an ICT manufacturing hub. On the other hand, with the help of a global 3GPP 5G standard, the economies of scale could be leveraged to manufacture ICT equipment for a rapid and cost-effective rural network which is India's urgent need. Not only that but the ICT manufacturing would be used to serve both the local and global markets. Reliance Jio and other telecom companies have also remarked that the use of 5Gi should be used in a non-mandatory manner.

Latest Samsung Patent Reveals Variable Aperture Camera System

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 02:49 AM PDT

A80 Samsung has been known for its cameras in recent times, with the company finally opting for cameras that can take on Apple’s offerings on the iPhone and the Google Pixel. Today, it seems that Samsung has been working on a movable camera design meant for handsets that could allow for variable aperture for the camera. This design was showcased in a patent that was spotted by LetsGoDigital. In this patent, the camera setup, which in its regular style, is placed in a horizontal manner on the smartphone's back. What sets it apart is the feature wherein the cameras in the array seem to move, resulting in a triangle.

Samsung’s Patent Hints at Amazing Camera Capabilities

The primary sensor of this module is present in the centre and can move down from the initial position. This is coupled with an ultra-wide sensor and a telephoto camera on the left and right sides of the module, which can move inside or inwards. Every one of these camera sensors comes with two openings, each of which has a different aperture. Theoretically, it has been known for quite some time that changing of the position of the camera sensor leads to a change in the aperture. When these cameras join to form a triangle, every single one of them would be at its lowest aperture. Given as to how the cameras have two final locations, this hints at the possibility of just two aperture values per camera is available, which is also hinted towards via the figure that was showcased. For those of you wondering, there are multiple benefits of this camera system, since a lower than usual aperture can allow for more light to enter into the camera, which usually aids in low-light conditions. There are certain flaws, such as possible failures resulting from the constant movement of the sensors, as well as a possible increase in the weight of the device. This patent was filed by Samsung Electro-Mechanic in October of 2020. It still remains unknown as to whether Samsung has been thinking about making use of this system on a future smartphone. Previously, Samsung has been known for doing the same and trying out variable aperture with certain flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus.

Satellite Broadband May Have 2 Million Subscribers By 2025 Says ICRA

Posted: 09 Aug 2021 01:54 AM PDT

Satellite Broadband Subscribers ICRA While the telecom industry in India seems to be reduced to a handful of players, the wired broadband industry in India has proliferated in recent times thanks to the rapid adoption of FTTH technology by the industry stakeholders, new ISPs, and the consumers alike. However, while this happens in the background, there is an entirely new segment of broadband business that is brewing and that happens to be satellite communication. As per a new press release by ICRA, satellite communication is going to be the next revolution in the broadband space in India. The rating agency in its release has remarked that if the operating environment eases, the satellite communication user base is expected to rise to around 1.5 to 2 million by 2025, generating a revenue of around Rs 5,000-6,000 crore annually.

Many New Players Stepping in the Field

Mr Sabyasachi Majumdar, Group Head & Senior Vice President, ICRA noted that satellite communication will be important for the areas which have not been connected with a terrestrial broadband connection using the traditional methods. Besides, it will be a boon for broadband inclusion of a lot of remote and sparsely populated areas. He further added that a lot of new players are stepping in the race of launching satellites for ventures like these including popular names like Starlink, Amazon, and One Web. It is worth noting that services like these make use of the Low Earth orbit satellites which are sent in space forming a network of satellites used to provide broadband connectivity to the people. Some of the advantages of such a network include good geographical coverage and good broadcasting capabilities. However, the technology is also very expensive and prone to bad weather.

Growth in India Slow Due to Policy Uncertainties

ICRA also noted that adoption in India is currently slow, as in the United States, these services have 4.5 million subscribers and European Union has more than 2.1 million subscribers, the penetration in India is only restricted to 0.3 million enterprise subscribers. The reason for this limitation is the restrictive policies to launch satellites in space, and also restrictions on last-mile connectivity through satellite to retail subscribers. If the policy environment eases, then the satellite communication market would be able to reach its full potential, Majumdar said.

Vodafone Idea Stock Rallies Up Early Monday

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:37 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) has become the most talked-about telecom operator in India for the last few weeks. The telco's uncertain future has people debating about what its next move should be to ensure survival. Due to all this, Vi's stock had seen a major blow last week and had fallen under Rs 5. But on Monday, in the early trading session, telco’s stock is looking much better. As of the time of this writing, Vi's share price is Rs 7.10, and it is the same price the stock opened on Monday. So effectively, there's no gain, but more importantly, there's no dip/loss in the stock price today.

What's Causing the Gain?

When the telco's promoters are not willing to infuse capital, it's really surprising to see the stock price of the company go up. There can be multiple reasons why Vi's share price has shot up. The first reason could be the tax law that was introduced last week. Second could be the talks of a relief package coming for the telecom sector soon. Third could be short-term retail traders looking to gain the advantage of the fallen price. Vi's not a bad operator per se. The telco's prepaid and postpaid offers are unmatched by any other telecom operator in the industry. But its debt and losses have made the investors a little jittery. Even the lenders led by the State Bank of India (SBI), who believe that Vi might not be able to clear its debt completely, have suggested to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to covert Vi's debt into equity. The stock of the company is above Rs 7, which is a good thing for the retail investors who were worried that all of their money would be wiped out. There's no saying what will happen at the end of the day and whether the stock will be stable or not.

Telecom Sector Relief Package, Everything to Know

Posted: 08 Aug 2021 11:03 PM PDT

Telecom Sector The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is expected to come out with a relief package for the telecom sector of India very soon. The government will look to reduce the financial burden on the telcos so that operators such as Vodafone Idea can have a future in the Indian market. The relief package isn't final yet and the government's still in the process of making it. According to the latest development from an ET Telecom report, the DoT might be looking to set up a panel or hire external consultants for preparing a relief package for the telecom sector of India. Here's a few things the telecom sector is expected to get from the relief package.

Relief Package for Telecom Sector Might Include all This

As per the previous reports and the discussion going around the industry, the relief package for the telecom sector is expected to reduce levies such as the spectrum usage charges (SUC) and license fees (LF). Further, the relief package might reduce the AGR dues by excluding all the non-telecom revenues that the operators make. The government might also reduce or totally do away with the bank guarantees that the operators need to provide. This is all that's expected from the relief package that DoT may introduce for the telecom sector. There might be a few more things in the package to make the life of the operators easier. There's no guarantee when the government might come out with the relief package and further who will sit on the panel to make the package. Previously, the government had sought inputs from Deloitte and IIM-Ahmedabad for making the relief package for the state-run telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL). These consultations and inputs from professional bodies will help the government in coming out with the most effective relief package for the ailing sector. This relief package might make a difference in the survival or fall of the Vodafone Idea in India.
