Vodafone Idea Needs Tariff Hike, Relief Package Is Short Term Help

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 12:08 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea The government and the industry must look beyond the relief package. Five years down the line, this relief package would not make a lot of difference since it is only a short-term measure for the companies. The only major operator that's in need of a relief package is Vodafone Idea (Vi). As we have mentioned in the past, while Bharti Airtel can benefit from the relief package, it doesn't desperately need it. The relief package is a short-term measure and while it can help Vi immediately, it doesn't solve the core problem for the sector. The reason why the telecom sector including Vodafone Idea is in a grim position is because of low returns on investment. Any business that doesn’t make sizeable profits can't reinvest into business because there's just not enough money. This creates more long-term problems than one can think of. The only way the sector and Vi can solve this issue is by going for "sizeable tariff hikes", says Edelweiss.

Tariff Hikes Coupled With Relief Measures Will Set Vodafone Idea for the Future

Sizeable tariff hikes for the 4G prepaid customers will ensure that companies are earning more out of each of their customers. The rise in the average revenue per user (ARPU) will help Vodafone Idea in narrowing losses initially and then with earning profits. Further, the relief measures will ensure that Vodafone Idea's cash flow position isn't stressed anymore which will mean the company can comfortably invest in its 4G networks. As per Jefferies, if Vodafone Idea doesn't invest in its networks soon, it will lead to the downfall of the company as all of its subscribers might start migrating to the networks of Jio and Airtel. However, there are questions about the relief package for the telecom sector. While the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is trying to propose the package to the cabinet, it is worth noting that the centre has never stepped in to flush money from its budget for saving a private company. Since there's no precedent of such a thing happening, it is unlikely that it will happen this time.

5Gi or 5G, India Still Lacks Clarity

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 09:15 AM PDT

5G or 5Gi India still doesn't have much clarity when it comes to the next-generation connectivity networks. All across the globe, countries and governments are going with the 5G standards developed by the 3GPP. But India has had different plans. In order to become self-reliant, TSDSI had developed its own 5G standard, namely 5Gi. Many opine that 5Gi is the right way to go, but then there are many who believe that 5G standards from 3GPP is the more accurate way of looking at the future. The thing is, the longer this debate goes, the longer it will take the operators to roll out the 5G networks. It is worth noting that the telecom operators in India have already started testing 5G networks in different parts of the country. But none of the operators has commented about which standard they are using for conducting the trials. The operators are not saying anything because they can't officially announce the standard they are testing with, as the government can announce the official standard anytime it wants.

5G By 3GPP Is The Better Way to Go

5G networks in India and the rest of the world should be powered by the 3GPP standards because they will allow globalisation and standardisation of other technologies and products revolving around 5G. If India goes ahead with the 5Gi, it will result in an increased cost of production of smartphones for the manufacturers. Many bodies related to the telecom sector of India have warned about going ahead with the 5Gi standard. If the government goes with the 5Gi, it would mean that India will become an isolated nation. Smartphones built for the 5G networks of India won't even connect to the other 5G networks while in international roaming. The benefits of 5Gi are far less than that of its benefits. It is most likely that the government will listen to the industry and make the 5G standards by 3GPP the norm for India as well.

WhatsApp Testing New Voice Transcription Feature

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 08:10 AM PDT

The instant messaging app WhatsApp is all set to be working on a new feature that will let users transcribe their voice messages. Currently, this feature is said to be under testing for iOS users. Also, it is believed to be rolled out to Android users as well over time. At present, WhatsApp doesn’t provide any transcription of voice messages. Instead, there are third-party apps that are available for Android and iOS users to transcribe the voice messages.

WhatsApp Testing New Voice Transcription Feature

In a report by WABetaInfo, the WhatsApp beta tracker, posted screenshots that hint at the development of the new voice message transcription feature. The report shows that it is under testing only on the iOS version of the app. This report details how this feature works for users. One of the screenshots shows that the app will send speech data that it receives in the form of voice messages directly to the speech engine of Apple for transcription. This indicates that Facebook will not be involved in this transcription process. To enable the voice message transcription, WhatsApp requires permission to share the speech data with Apple. WhatsApp will ask users to grant the required permission to transcribe the messages. Once users grant the permission, users can get their voice messages transcribed. Also, the iOS version of the app will get a new feature called Transcript, hints the report. This feature will let users get the timestamps as well so that they can jump to a particular section of the message. Also, it has been made clear that the transcription will be locally saved in the WhatsApp database when the first message is transcribed. The screenshots were shared from WhatsApp for iPhone hinting that it is on cards. Given that the transcriptions will be stored locally, the speech data will adhere to privacy concerns. Notably, the third-party apps will store speech data on their servers, thereby raising concerns regarding privacy. Though the WhatsApp voice transcription feature is on cards, we do not know when exactly the feature will be rolled out to users. We can expect a beta launch of this feature sometime soon.

As usual, the first smartphones to get the update will be Pixel devices. According to a report from XDA-Developers, Google will publish the source code for Android 12 on October 4, 2021. Even the Google Pixel 6 series smartphones will come running on the Android 12 update out of the box. The reason why people are very excited about the launch of Android 12 has to do with the changes that it will be bringing to the overall experience. From user interface (UI) to many other things, all of it will change and bring a fresh perspective for the people to use Android smartphones.

Google Recently Released Android 12 Beta 5

It is worth noting that Google had recently released the Android 12 Beta 5 version. It is the fifth and final version before the stable release arrives. The Beta 5 comes with all the 'fixes and optimisations' that the Android 12 Beta 4.1 didn't come with. Xiaomi to Discontinue Mi Branding

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 05:09 AM PDT

In a recent move, the dominant Chinese smartphones manufacturer Xiaomi has announced that it will drop the Mi branding from its smartphones and other products. Ths company aims to do this to unify its global brand presence. It announced that the new brand identity will enable two distinct product series under the parent corporate brand. While it will drop the Mi branding from its products, the business or corporate will still retain the logo. Eventually, the stores and corporate offices of Xiaomi will carry the orange-colored logo.

Xiaomi Drops Mi Logo

As the Mi branding will be removed, the product portfolio under the brand will have the prefix Xiaomi. The company notes that the products manufactured under the Redmi brand will remain unaffected due to this move. Regarding this move, Jaskaran Singh Kapany, Head of Marketing at Xiaomi India, said that the company intends to have a unified presence as it grows globally. With the logo change, it envisions to bridge the gap between its products and brand. The new Xiaomi logo sans Mi branding will be used for its premium products representing the pinnacle of technology and offer a premium experience. As the festive season is approaching soon, Xiaomi's premium product series 'Mi’ will be renamed to Xiaomi, the senior executive said in the press release. The company has gradually acted up on the Mi branding since the past few months. It dropped the branding from the Mix series smartphones and launched the Xiaomi Mix 4. In China, the company sells its flagship, the Xiaomi 11 and not the Mi 11 as in India. Lastly, the Mi Notebook Ultra, its latest laptop in India, features the Xiaomi logo instead of a Mi logo.

Why This Move From Xiaomi?

For long-time users of Mi phones, this change might take time for them to get used to it. This move could be rational for those who are using these products. However, given that the company is successful of late with a surge in the number of Chinese OEMs dominating this market segment, we need to know that the company wants to keep one popular brand name all over the world. As Xiaomi is a popular brand name, the company might have decided to drop the Mi brand name. Moreover, two brand names might bring in unnecessary confusion.

Bharti Airtel Stock Touches Life-Time High Mark

Posted: 13 Sep 2021 03:26 AM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel's stock or shares today touched a lifetime high market of Rs 697. The rise in stock price came at a time when the other telecom stocks were falling. First of all, Bharti Airtel's stock opened at Rs 692 and then touched a high of Rs 697 before closing at Rs 693.30. Airtel had previously closed at Rs 685.85. The price of the stock might have risen because of the delayed plans from Reliance Jio and Google in coming out with the super-affordable 4G smartphone namely 'JioPhone Next'.

Bharti Airtel Stock Has Seen Immense Growth

Airtel's stock has seen immense growth in the last few weeks. The major reason behind the rise in the stock price of Bharti Airtel is the announcement of fundraising plans. For the unaware, Bharti Airtel is planning to raise up to 21,000 crores through a rights issue. On top of this, the market sentiment is favourable towards the duopoly of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel in the coming years if Vodafone Idea doesn't get a relief package from the government. However, the relief package is already in the works and all that's left is for the Cabinet to hear the proposal from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). The best thing for Bharti Airtel is that it will survive and thrive regardless of a relief package. If the relief package doesn't come, Airtel will gain a lot of 2G customers of Vodafone Idea (Vi), in case Vi has to exit the market. But, if a relief package comes, then it also stands to help Bharti Airtel. It will just be a bonus for Airtel as the telco will have even more reserves of cash to invest in its networks and purchase 5G spectrum to deliver consistent and great services throughout India. Bharti Airtel's stock rising when other telecom stocks are falling is indicative of the positive market sentiment towards the telco's future in India.

Motorola said that it expects the MH7020 to be one of the leading Wi-Fi mesh systems in India. After the launch of the Motorola MH7020, now there are three products available by the company in the same segment. DoT, FinMin Discussions on Telecom Relief In Advanced Stages

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 11:45 PM PDT

DoT The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Finance Ministry (FinMin) are in advanced stage discussions about the relief package that is to be provided to the telecom sector of India. Last week, the Cabinet had refused to hear the DoT's proposal for a relief package for the telecom industry. But that doesn't mean the relief package won't come at all. Sooner or later, the Cabinet will have to hear it, and that is why telcos, especially Vodafone Idea (Vi), will be eagerly waiting to hear from the government. But there's a huge issue lurking in the corner for Vi and the other operators who need relief.

Telecom Sector Relief Package Isn't Backed By Any Precedent

The DoT doesn't only have to prepare a package Cabinet note, but it also needs to find a precedent for it. A Business Standard report highlights that a senior government official said since there isn't a precedent of the government stepping in to save a private company before, it is hard to assume that it will happen this time. The Centre has never used its budget to save private companies before, and it puts the plans of the DoT for a relief package into a confusing fix. Everything that's being considered, including the moratorium in adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and a reduction in the spectrum usage charges (SUC), and more, don't have any precedence. This isn't something comforting to hear for the fans of the private operators and even the people working in the sector. Vodafone Idea has the kind of debt that can take the whole company down if its cash flow position doesn't improve immediately. This will not be good for the industry in the long run, and it is an argument that can take precedence when presented to the Cabinet. If Vodafone Idea has to exit the market (speculation), it will result in a duopoly in the sector since Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) doesn't seem to make large strides with 4G either.

Pixel 6 Pro Geekbench Results Out, Google Tensor Doesn’t Look That Promising

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 10:26 PM PDT

Pixel 6 Pro The Google Pixel 6 Pro is expected to launch every soon. The highlight of the upcoming Pixel series is not just the Android 12 that it will run on but also the chipset that will power the smartphone. The Google Pixel 6 series is confirmed to be powered by the Google Tensor SoC. Many expected that the Tensor chipset from Google would outperform the flagship leader Snapdragon 888 easily. But looking at the Geekbench results of the Google Pixel Pro, it doesn't feel like that. The Geekbench score of the smartphone shows that it might not even be able to outperform the OnePlus 9 series devices.

Google Pixel 6 Pro Geekbench Results

The Google Pixel 6 Pro's Geekbench scores are – 881 (single-core) and 2939 (Multi-core score). It is worth noting that this score isn't much different from that of the OnePlus Nord 2 5G launched in India recently. Further, there are many mid-range smartphones in the market today that can all deliver the same performance as that of the scores mentioned above. So, while Google Tensor is expected to deliver a flagship experience, it might not be able to do. But there's one thing to consider, how well the chipset is integrated with the hardware. Regardless, the results don't look very promising at the moment, which is something for Google to consider because it will likely price the Google Pixel 6 Pro in the same range as that of the other flagships in the market. The Google Pixel 6 Pro is expected to come with a 6.7-inch OLED panel with support for 120Hz refresh rate. It might feature a Quad-HD+ resolution display and come with a triple camera setup where the primary sensor is a 50MP lens paired with a 48MP telephoto sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide-angle sensor. It will be interesting to see how the smartphone fares against other flagships in the market and whether it will be successful.

Oppo Android 12 ColorOS 12 to Release On September 16

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 08:49 PM PDT

Oppo Oppo's fans have been waiting for the company to come out with the Android 12 based ColorOS 12 since the time Oppo announced that it would be releasing it in late September. However, earlier, Oppo hadn't given a fixed/firm date for the launch of the new ColorOS 12. But according to a leak from Digital Chat Station (DCS), the company will launch the ColorOS 12 on September 16, 2021. As per the leakster, Oppo will launch the ColorOS 12 in a new event scheduled for the said date in China that will start at 6 PM local time.

Oppo ColorOS 12 Expected Features

The Android 12 is said to be the biggest Android update and change that users have seen in the last few years. Going by that, it is expected that the ColorOS 12 from Oppo will also look very different from the ColorOS 11. The ColorOS 12 is expected to come with the 'Cross-Screen Interconnection' feature that is quite similar to the Huawei Multi-Screen Collaboration. Further, according to a Gizmochina report, Oppo is expected to take a lot of features from its competitors' Android skins, including Xiaomi's MIUI, OnePlus's HydrogenOS, and more. It is worth noting that even the OnePlus phones in China will also run on ColorOS 12 instead of the HydrogenOS. But the global variants of smartphones will continue to run on OxygenOS, which should be a big relief for many. If the leakster is right, then there aren't many days left before the official Android 12 software update will start rolling out for the Oppo users in China. This will help Oppo fans around the world take a good look at what they can expect from an Oppo smartphone running on Android 12. More companies, including Samsung, is expected to come out with the Android 12 update (One UI 4.0) very soon. There's no word on when OnePlus or Vivo will come out with the Android 12 update.

Tata Sky Broadband Offers Services That Most ISPs Do Not

Posted: 12 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT

Tata Sky Broadband Tata Sky is a very reputable brand in India. But when someone talks about the company, he/she is usually referring to its Direct-to-Home (DTH) services. Tata Sky is right at the top when it comes to providing satellite TV services throughout India. But there's one more segment where Tata Sky is building its brand, and that is the fiber broadband market. Tata Sky Broadband has already expanded its services in multiple parts of the country and is continuously investing in its fiber networks to reach more cities as fast as possible. The company offers some benefits to its broadband subscribers that most of the internet services providers (ISPs) don't do. So what are those benefits? Here's everything you should know.

Tata Sky Broadband Every Benefit Details

First of all, the company is offering free expert installation and setup of the fiber connection for the users. To top this, Tata Sky Broadband also provides the users with a free modern dual-band router that can comfortably deliver high speeds. But this is not everything that a user is promised when he/she purchases a new fiber connection from the company. On its website, Tata Sky Broadband has promised that users will get a Wi-Fi network with super-fast speeds and an uptime of 99.9%, which is almost every time. Further, the company promises uniform speeds to the users. This means that if a user has purchased a 300 Mbps plan from the company, he/she will get 300 Mbps download as well as upload speed. In simple words, uniform speeds mean the same speed for both upload and download. This is what is expected by most Internet service providers (ISPs), though. The company promises that users get a completely secure network. Also, users have the flexibility of changing the plan they are on anytime they wish to. All the broadband plans from the company come with unlimited data, which is 3.3TB (3,300GB). Post the users have consumed the fair-usage-policy (FUP) data for the month, the speed of the plan will be reduced to 3 Mbps. Tata Sky Broadband also promises users a free landline connection. However, for the setup of the landline connection, the company won't provide the telephone, but the connection line will be provided to the customer without any additional cost. Note that there are ISPs such as JioFiber, Airtel Xstream Fiber, Excitel and more who provide some or all of the offers/benefits that Tata Sky Broadband is providing. But then there are many companies that operate regionally that don't provide such offers. In that case, the plans from Tata Sky Broadband automatically become a wiser option.
