Vodafone Idea, Airtel, Jio Show Support for Relief Measures

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 12:15 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio, all have shown their support for the relief measures that were announced by the government today. The Government of India (GoI) has changed its definition of the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and have also allowed a moratorium with interest rates for four years in the payments related to AGR and spectrum purchased, ease in process of getting clearance for tower installation, 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) through automatic route which will aid the telecom sector in the long run, and digital KYC among other things. All of these measures will help Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel, and Reliance Jio in their business. Telcos will have to worry less about dues for the next four years at least. This will mean that they can invest more money in their networks. It is a little unclear whether Airtel would take the moratorium advantage since it will be wary of the interests which will be accrued over time. However, one thing's clear, this is a strong step of the government in showing that it cares about the Digital India vision and is ready to help the private companies if needed.

Telcos Show Their Support

All the telcos have said that this move from the government will boost the Digital India vision and will further aid the economy. This was a very crucial decision for the sector which would have made it or broken it in the short term. Had the relief package not arrived, chances of Vodafone Idea sliding out the market was quite high. But that risk is not there anymore, at least for the next four to five years. With the 5G era, a lot of things can change and Vodafone Idea can certainly build a business where it can solidify its brand just as good as Jio and Airtel's in the next few years. With the arrival of the relief package, the market sentiment towards the telecom companies will be very positive and this should ideally help their stock prices too.

Wired and Wireless Router Differences You Should Know

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 08:39 AM PDT

Wired and Wireless Router Differences You Should Know Are you setting up a home network? Well, you have two choices – a wired connection and a wireless connection. Most wired connections make use of Ethernet cables to connect your device either to the router or modem. You can also use your home's phone line system with the appropriate hardware. Notably, there are two types of routers – wired and wireless routers that define the nature of the connection. Here, you will get to know more details about the wired and wireless routers. Check out the comparison below.

What Is Wireless Router?

The wireless router connects directly to a modem or cable. It lets you collect data from the internet and send the information to it. The router uses in-built antennas that will build and connect with your Wi-Fi network. Eventually, the internet will be available wirelessly for all devices on your home network.

What Is Wired Router?

On the other hand, the wired router connects to the device over a wired link directly. There will be a port that will link to the internet to connect with the modem. The wired router will connect to computers as well as other devices to transmit data via ports.

Wired vs Wireless Routers

When it comes to performance, the wired routers provide the best possible internet speeds. Most wired network connections provide a bandwidth of 10 to 100 Mbps and a wireless connection offers relatively lesser bandwidth. Wired routers have a consistent and reliable connection as the line is directly plugged into the router. On the other hand, the wireless connections degrade as you move further from the access point, thereby making the connection remote sensitive. Despite being reliable, the wired networks are expensive to install and reconfigure and users cannot move a single device as in wireless networks. In terms of comparison, wired networks are relatively faster than wireless networks as there is a separate cable is used to connect each device in the network and each cable transmits data at the same speed. At the same time, wireless networks are also faster but the speeds depend on factors including routing, ports and hardware aspects of the devices.

COAI Believes Relief Package Will Boost Investment, Competition

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 07:37 AM PDT

COAI Believes Relief Package Will Boost Investment, Competition After months of wait, the telecom operators in India were granted the relief package that they can use for their dues. COAI, the representative body of Indian telecom operators has claimed that the relief package is a clear indication of the intention of the Indian government towards the much-needed structural reforms that will be taken towards the telecom industry. Notably, COAI represents the telecom operators in the country such as Reliance Jio, Airtel and Vodafone Idea. It claims that the upcoming structural reforms could go a long way in relieving the financial stress faced by the operators in the sector right now. Also, these reforms are expected to boost investments, offer a plethora of choices for customers and bring in healthy competition in this sector. The structural reforms related announcement is in hand with the long-standing risks faced by the telecom industry.

Reforms For Telecom Sector

The COAI stated that they welcome the bold and forward-looking decision that has been taken by the government for the telecom sector. The representative body of the Indian telecom operators expressed their thanks to the Hon'ble Prime Minister for recognising the sector as a crucial one that has played a major role in growing the country’s economy amidst the pandemic crisis. The body went on to state that the decision that was revealed by the Hon'ble Minister of Communications indicates the Government's intent for the much-needed structural reforms in the telecommunications sector. It is said that this will play a part in the success of Digital India and accelerate the journey to meet the goals related to the Digital India initiative that will deliver ample benefit to the consumers. On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet of India approved a slew of structural and process reforms for the telecom sector. The government noted that these reforms are expected to protect and generate employment opportunities, protect the interests of consumers, promote healthy competition, infuse liquidity, reduce the regulatory burden on telecom operators and encourage investment. Already, the government has expressed its intention to allow more telecom operators to enter the segment in the country to make it highly competitive for consumers.

Reliance Jio Welcomes Government’s Bold Reforms for Telecom Sector

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:06 AM PDT

Reliance Jio India's number one telecom operator, Reliance Jio, has welcomed the reforms that the Government of India (GoI) has announced for the sector. The telco has called the reforms a "timely" step from the GoI and believes that these new reforms will aid in strengthening the telcos sector of India. Further, Jio said that the relief measures announced will help the government is moving towards its Digital India ambition. Reliance Jio said that it aims to bring the fruits of the digital ecosystem to complete 1.35 billion Indians. The relief measures announced by the government will help the telco in doing so. Jio wants to bring India the best digital services for the least cost. With these new reforms, the telco said it would be able to offer more benefits to its customers.

Mukesh Ambani Welcomes Government's Decision

Mukesh Ambani, Managing Director and Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), welcomed the relief measures from the government. Ambani said that these measures would boost the government's Digital India initiative. What's worth noting here is that Reliance Jio will now be in an even better position to scale its business. The telco doesn't have huge adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues like Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharti Airtel, and, on top of that, Reliance Jio also has positive cash flow. With 5G coming around the corner, the telco will be looking to increase its market share. These reforms are just a bonus for both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. While it will aid Vodafone Idea (Vi) a lot, these reforms are going to act as a business booster for Jio and Airtel. Ambani said that the telecom sector is one of the main and primary movers of the economy. With these reforms, not only the sector but the whole Indian economy will benefit. Vodafone Idea will particularly be happy since its worries about payments of dues will be lifted, at least for a short while.

Indian Government Wants More Telecom Operators to Be Part of Competition

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 05:48 AM PDT

Indian Government Wants More Telecom Operators to Be Part of Competition Today, Ashwani Vaishnaw, the IT & Telecom minister stated that the Indian government wants to lure more players into the telecom industry. Especially, the government eyes to do so after the 5G spectrum auction with the assistance of structural reforms as well as the telecom relief package.

More Telecom Operators Welcome

The Minister added that it is crucial to have healthy competition in the telecom sector in the country as it will provide a plethora of options for Indian consumers. The competition will be vital for the telecom industry to provide choices to its customers. As a fundamental right, this has to be protected. The structural reforms will ensure healthy competition as well as attract new players. Furthermore, the Indian telecom industry will auction the 5G spectrum so that more players are encouraged to enter the sector. They can understand the impact of what is happening, which will let them witness sustainable growth. Moreover, these structural reforms will be revenue-neutral from the government's perspective, added the minister. Talking about the telecom sector's relief package, the minister noted that it will ensure optimum cash flow in the telecom industry, which will in turn be used for the deployment of 5G services in India.

Local Manufacturing Of Telecom Equipment

Furthermore, the minister added that the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has given the mandate that the core 4G, 5G and RAN will have to be designed and manufactured in the country. Notably, the telecom sector is capital intensive. With this mandate from the PM, BSNL as well as other telecom operators will see only the technology deployment made within India. Also, the locally made equipment related to telecom will be exported. It is expected that the Indian government will soon announce approved manufacturers to make telecom equipment under the production-linked scheme meant for the telecom equipment and networking products. It is expected that the multinational brands such as Nokia and Cisco and domestic players such as Tejas and HFCL and the major contract manufacturer Foxconn could start their local manufacturing in India after being approved by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) soon. As per Peeyush Vaish, the Partner & Telecom Sector Leader at Deloitte India, the savings in the cash flows will boost the telecom sector and make way for 5G auctions in the country.

Bharti Airtel Happy With Government’s Decision of Bringing Reforms for Telecom Sector

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 05:25 AM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel recently said that it is welcoming the reforms announced by the Government of India (GoI). With the recently announced reforms, the burden of the sector will be reduced significantly, and it will ensure a three-player telecom market sustains. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, said that this move from the government would ensure that its vision of Digital India can be approached more aggressively. Mittal said that this would help India in achieving its digital ambitions fast.

Bharti Airtel Fully Committed Towards India's Growth

Mittal said that Bharti Airtel is fully committed to the growth of the country. Thus, it will support Prime Minister Modi's vision of investing and accelerating the growth of India. The announcement of the reforms will certainly add to the telco's growth in the short and the long-term. This is just a bonus for Bharti Airtel, which is already in a stable position in terms of revenues and is further looking to raise Rs 21,000 crores through a rights issue. Further, the reforms announced by the government will ensure that the 5G era will see new telecom players entering the market. This will further result in a boost for the economy as more jobs will be created, and more money will flow through. Gopal Vittal, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Bharti Airtel, said that more needs to be done. Vittal said that the next thing that needs to be focused on is bringing a tariff regime that's good for the telecom operators and gets them a fair return on their investments. Tariff hikes coupled with the relief package would make the industry more strong, and it might bring new investors into play. However, until the time 5G arrives, there shouldn't be an aggressive tariff hike move from the telcos since they will be looking to get the biggest market share possible to maximise their revenues in the medium-term.

Vodafone Idea Gets Major Help, Govt Approves Relief Package

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 03:48 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea After a long wait, there is good news for telecom operators as the cabinet has approved to provide them with a relief package. With this, it intends to maintain a three-private player market, offering them the option to convert a part of their dues into equity towards the government and some part after a period of four years.

Telecom Operators' Relief Package

As per ET Telecom citing people familiar with the development, the cabinet approved the proposals sought after by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). This package will likely include a moratorium on AGR and spectrum payments for four years besides a reduction in the spectrum usage charge (SUC). These are among the measures taken to enhance the health of the telecom sector that is debt-laden. Also, it will retain a three-private player market. Furthermore, other important proposals include the redefining of AGR that will exclude non-telecom items, a reduction in the bank guarantees, and more that will let telecom operators surrender the unused spectrum. As per sources, the central government has let telecom operators convert a segment of their statutory dues in government's equity right away. Within the four-year time period, if any telecom company sees improvements in its operational performance but struggles due to the payment of its dues, then the government might consider the option of converting the principal amount of the same into equity.

Vodafone Idea Receives Help

In the afternoon trade on Wednesday, the shares of Vi were trading at Rs 8.83, which is 1.6 per cent higher while Bharti Airtel was trading at 5.1 per cent higher at Rs 729.90 on BSE. In the April-June earnings report, which is the first quarter of the financial year 2021-22, Vodafone Idea stated that the total gross debt was Rs 1.92 lakh crore as of June 30, 2021. This comprises deferred spectrum payment obligations of Rs 1.06 lakh crore alongside AGR liability of Rs 62.180 crore due to the government and the debt of Rs 23,400 crore from financial institutions and banks. Notably, the cash and cash equivalents accounted to Rs 920 crore and the net debt was valued at Rs 1.91 lakh crore.

WhatsApp Multi-Device Feature Extended to More Users for Testing

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 03:22 AM PDT

WhatsApp WhatsApp is now extending the 'Multi-Device' feature support for testing to multiple users, which include the 'non-beta' users as well. Until now, the feature was under testing and was extended to the beta-users. But now the company is also involving the 'non-beta' users for the testing process, which means the rollout of the feature might be very near. For the unaware, the WhatsApp Multi-Device feature will allow the user to run his/her WhatsApp account on four different devices simultaneously.

WhatsApp Multi-Device Feature to Allow Users to Use WhatsApp in Four Devices

Note that the four devices can only be 'non-smartphone' devices such as laptops and computers. Right now, if the user is logged into his/her WhatsApp account on one computer, he/she can't access it in another one without logging out from the first computer. But this will change once the support for the 'Multi-Device' feature is rolled out completely by the Facebook-owned texting application. A report from WABetaInfo suggests that WhatsApp will now be involving the 'non-beta' users in its testing process, which means the feature might be rolled out very soon. The feature was first announced back in July. In a short period, the company must have tested it rigorously to allow non-beta users to be involved as well. One of the biggest advantages of this feature would be that once you have logged into your WhatsApp account on a computer, you will be able to access it regardless of your smartphone, which has the primary WhatsApp account being present. In simple words, even if your smartphone is switched off, you will be able to access your WhatsApp account on your computer. This will be a very useful feature for many who use WhatsApp on their computers for work purposes and more. As of now, if your phone is not connected to the internet or is not switched on, you can't access WhatsApp on any other device.

Vodafone Idea Will Now Provide Users Real-Time Alerts for Disasters

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 01:49 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) has launched India's first cell broadcast-based public warning system with the Andhra Pradesh government and Celltick. The company will be taking the help of Celltick, one of the largest cell-broadcast based products provider and a global leader of Public Warning Systems. Celltick announced that Vodafone Idea (Vi) has become the first telecom operator in the state of Andhra Pradesh to support the CAP-compliant Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (IPAWS). For the unaware, the IPAWS is being deployed in the state of Andhra Pradesh for the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA).

Vodafone Idea Users In Andhra Pradesh Will Now Get Disaster SMS Alerts In Real-Time

Through the CBC platform provided by Celltick, telecom operators can broadcast time-sensitive information to their customers/subscribers' mobile devices. This system is immune to traffic loads and network jams to ensure that if the data is time-sensitive, it reaches the customers' of the company in real-time. During any natural disaster or calamity, Vi's subscribers, including the subscribers living in Andhra Pradesh or the international tourists using the networks of Vi, will get real-time alerts. This feature certainly has a lot of value since it can result in millions of lives saved. It would be good to see Vodafone Idea (Vi), Celltick, and the governments of other states doing this for the other parts of the country as well. Even other operators can jump in and be a part of the project. This will help the customers in a major deal since one message seen at the right time can mean a life can be saved. This service will be very useful, especially for people living in areas where natural disasters and calamities are common phenomena. Celltick's CB system supports advanced global standards, including EU-Alert, EMTEL, ETWS, EENA, ATIS, amongst others. It is also leveraged by other countries and foreign governments to alert their citizens about any upcoming threat.

Bharti Airtel Stock Price Touches a New High

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 01:24 AM PDT

Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel has been enjoying good and positive attention from investors and market analysts for the last few weeks. India's second-largest telecom operator has today again touched a new lifetime high price point. At the time of writing, Bharti Airtel's stock price is Rs 733.20, which is 5.65% in the green. It has already touched a lifetime high of Rs 734.70. Not only Bharti Airtel, but the stocks of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) and Vodafone Idea (Vi) are also in the green. At the time of writing, Vodafone Idea's stock is trading at Rs 8.95, which is 2.30% in the green today. RIL's stock is trading 0.70% higher at Rs 2,385. Bharti Airtel's stock opened at Rs 697 today, which predicted a strong day for the telco. It is worth noting that Airtel's stock had previously closed at Rs 694.20. So the opening of the stock at a higher price point shows the positive market sentiment towards its stock.

Why Are the Telecom Stocks In Buzz Today?

The telecom stocks are getting special attention today because of the expected Cabinet hearing today. During the session, the Cabinet could approve the telecom relief package, which will be a huge help for the sector. Also, there are reports that the government might get a token stake in Vodafone Idea by converting its dues into equity. Because of the expected news, the telecom stocks are buzzing, but there's one huge concern. The government has never stepped in and saved private companies with its money from the budget. So it will be a fortunate strange event in case this happens. Bharti Airtel's stock has seen new highs multiple times in the last few days. This is just evidence of the fact that people trust the telco's future in 5G business. It will be interesting to see how the market pans out for the rest of the day for Airtel and other telecom stocks.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 12, What Has Really Changed

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 12:33 AM PDT

iPhone 13 Finally, the iPhone 13 broke the cover yesterday and the new lineup of iPhones seems to excite fans at least on paper. There are some major upgrades such as the use of the A15 Bionic processor, improved cameras with bigger sensors and better batteries. While all these seem to be impressive, these phones aren't a major step-from from their previous-generation models as they appear to be. Here is a comparison between the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 detailing what has actually changed.

iPhone 13 vs iPhone 12 Differences

Firstly, on the design front, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 12 look almost the same except for the smaller notch on the latest offerings. Also, the iPhone 13 series has flat edges and Ceramic Shield displays for improved durability, the same as iPhone 12 series. As these use bigger batteries, the new offerings are a tad heavier and there are some new colour options. In terms of display, the iPhone 13 has the biggest changes. While the OLED panel is of the same size as the previous generation models, Apple claims to offer brighter displays that are 28% faster than the ones on the iPhone 12. Also, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max are the first models from the company to feature ProMotion displays. There is support for 120Hz high refresh rate with iPhone 13 series devices while the iPhone 12 Pro has 60Hz refresh rate. Another major difference lies in the camera hardware. Both the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 13 mini feature a 12MP main camera sensor that is the biggest sensor ever on an iPhone. It is claimed to let in 47% more light than the iPhone 12’s cameras, thereby resulting in sharper pictures. There is optical image stabilization as well. Another more dramatic change is the bigger main sensor on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max for improved low-light photos. The wide-angle lens with f/1.8 aperture also translates to sharper and brighter images even in low lighting. In terms of video recording, we have the Cinematic Video recording capability that was not seen on the iPhone 12 series. The most important change is in the performance. The iPhone 13 models use the new and more powerful Apple A15 Bionic processor, which is an upgrade over the A14 used by the iPhone 12 series. It is touted to be the fastest SoC with exceptional performance. Apple hasn't disclosed the battery sizes but the iPhone 13 batteries are relatively larger than their iPhone 12 counterparts. Eventually, there will be a relatively long battery life on these modes.

OneWeb Launches 34 Satellites and Confirms Contact

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 11:34 PM PDT

OneWeb OneWeb, Bharti backed satcom company, has said that it recently launched 34 satellites to orbit and has also successfully made contact with all of them. The launch was done by Arianespace from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. It is worth noting that OneWeb plans to send over 648 Low-Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites into space to build its global constellation. With the recent launch of the 34 new satellites, the total number of OneWeb satellites into orbit has reached 322. This is almost half the number of satellites that OneWeb is planning to send to space. All of these satellites will help the company in providing high-speed and low-latency global connectivity.

OneWeb Launch Helps Arianespace Achieve Milestone of Launching 1000+ Satellites

With the launch of these 34 satellites of OneWeb, Arianespace has reached a milestone of launching more than 1000 satellites into space. The lift-off took place on September 14, 2021, at 7:07 PM BST. The company confirmed establishing a connection with all 34 satellites. The launch activity firms the position of OneWeb, staying on track with its goal of starting services this year. OneWeb plans to provide global connectivity by 2022, which will include the Indian market as well. The company has already raised up to $2.7 billion since November 2020, which doesn't include any debt. OneWeb doesn't look like it is very interested in providing direct commercial services to consumers. Instead, the company is looking to partner with telecom operators in each country it will enter so that it can help the operator/operators in increasing the reach of their network with the help of satellite broadband connectivity. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, made it clear that OneWeb isn't looking to compete with the telcos. Instead, the company looks to form partnerships with them and help them in enhancing their mobile network services. OneWeb plans to enter the Indian market by mid-2022.

Vodafone Idea Might See Govt Get a Stake In the Company

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 09:51 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea, the third-largest telecom operator in India might see the government stepping in and getting a stake in the company. A person aware of the matter told ET Telecom that the government is considering getting a token stake in Vodafone Idea. But the government will not infuse any capital into the company. It will only look to convert a part of the telco's dues as equity for itself. This might be good news for Vodafone Idea since it has the kind of debt which will be hard for a company to pay if its cash flow is negative. The government could also covert more dues of the company into equity for itself if it deems so. It will be a decision that might be discussed in the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday.

Government Wants India to be 3 Player Market

According to the official, the government wants India to be a three-player market only. As per the filing of Vodafone Idea, its debt as of June 30, 2021, was Rs 1.92 lakh crore. Out of this, the telco owes only Rs 23,400 crore to the banks and other financial institutions and the rest of the amount is owed to the government. This move from the government will instil confidence in the current investors/promoters of the company who are worried about not getting enough support from the company. If the investors feel that the government is backing the company, they might start pouring in money from their side as well. Another thing that's left to be discussed in the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday is the proposal of a relief package for the telecom sector. The telecom sector getting short-term relief will further alleviate concerns of Vodafone Idea going out of the market anytime soon. Since Vodafone Idea has been unsuccessful in raising Rs 25,000 crore, it will be hard for the company to clear its dues fast and also be able to reinvest in its networks.

JioFiber Crushes BSNL, Airtel Rs 1499 Broadband Plans

Posted: 14 Sep 2021 06:38 PM PDT

JioFiber BSNL Airtel Reliance Jio never shy's away from offering something extra to its customers for the same price its competitors are offering something for. Jio's fiber broadband arm, JioFiber, follows the same philosophy. While JioFiber, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Bharat Fibre, and Airtel Xstream Fiber all offer a Rs 1,499 broadband plan to the customers, the plan from JioFiber is truly the best and not just because of one reason, but multiple of them. JioFiber offers a ton of OTT benefits along with a free Set-Top Box (STB) to the customers with its plans. Let's see the details.

JioFiber Rs 1499 Broadband Plan Is Better Than What Airtel and BSNL Offer, Here's Why

First of all, note that the Rs 1499 broadband plan from all the companies, including JioFiber, BSNL, and Airtel, offer 300 Mbps speed to the users. All the companies offer the same amount of months fair usage policy (FUP) data as well, which is 3.3TB, and users get a free fixed-line connection for voice calling with each of the plans. But overlooking these basic benefits, which are the same as all the companies, there are a few benefits that only Jio provides to its customers. JioFiber gives users a free subscription to 16 different over-the-top (OTT) platforms with its plans. These include – ZEE5 Premium, Voot Kids, Voot Select, SonyLIV, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Netflix (Basic), Hoichoi, Sun NXT, Lionsgate Play, JioCinema, Discovery+, Eros Now, ShemarooMe, ALTBalaji, and JioSaavn. The Amazon Prime Video subscription offered with the plan is of 1-year. On top of this, JioFiber users can also claim a free hybrid STB from the company. Through that STB, they can convert their normal TV into a Smart TV and also utilise all of the OTT benefits they got with the plan. Airtel Xstream app that includes over 10,000 movies & shows aggregated across 7 OTT apps and 5 studios into one seamless experience. BSNL users get a free subscription to the Disney+ Hotstar Premium (I don't know how that works with new subscribers since the Disney+ Hotstar Premium plan structure has been discontinued). Airtel Xstream Fiber users can also opt for the Xstream Box, but they will have to pay a Rs 1,500 security deposit (refundable in nature) against the Android Box. This Android Box is arguably the best in India, but it still doesn't come for free, unlike Jio's STB, which doesn't cost anything. Considering all of the above, there's no doubt that the Rs 1499 plan from JioFiber is the best.
