Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal Stays Rs 1376 Crore Demand from Airtel Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:16 PM PDT Bharti Airtel did not want to pay the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues that were owed by Videocon Telecommunications to the government. Now, in a fresh development, the Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has put a stay on the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) order for Airtel to pay Rs 1,376 crores owed by Videocon in the form of AGR dues to the Centre. But Airtel said that while purchasing the spectrum from Videocon in 2016, the liabilities were known, and the full liability was of the seller (Videocon). On those grounds, Airtel said that it would not pay the AGR dues of Videocon. Further, the second-largest telco said that it has already paid more than 10% of its dues to the government. Airtel and DoT Case on AGR Dues of Videocon Shifted to Supreme CourtNow, the next hearing of the case will take place on November 16, 2021, in the Supreme Court (SC). According to a PTI report, for now, TDSAT has asked DoT to not take any action, including invoking of Bank Guarantees (BGs) against Airtel for not paying the dues. The confusion is there because, as per the ruling made by the Supreme Court in 2020, it was said that the liability of the dues of Videocon would be shifted to the buyer. But Airtel has said that it has already paid the dues it was supposed to pay and the Videocon dues, which were known at the time of the sale between the two companies, is not its liability. For the unaware, Videocon had sold its rights to use spectrum in six circles to Airtel in the 1800 MHz frequency band for Rs 4,428 crore. The deal took place way back in 2016. Airtel has argued that the law states it is the liability of the seller to clear all the dues and not the buyer. While the DoT is after Airtel based on the order that the SC had given during the AGR dues case ruling last year.
Sunil Bharti Mittal to Talk With Ambani for Coordinated Approach Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:59 AM PDT Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Bharti Enterprises, wants the telecom operators to come together for building a unified strategy and reviving the sector. Mittal said that the telcos have been cutting each other for getting a larger market share. As per the Indian business tycoon, it's high time that the industry regroups and focuses on building a sustainable business. For the same, Mittal recently spoke to Nick Read, CEO of Vodafone Group Plc, and "encouraged him to stake necessary steps and cover lost ground". Mittal reiterated that the government had done its part in helping the sector, so now it is time for the telcos to step up as well. Bharti Airtel Might Take Lead In Some AreasMittal said that he is also planning to speak to Mukesh Ambani, Managing Director and Chairman, Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), for coming together and building a coordinated approach to revive the industry. Mittal said that he would talk to Ambani about cooperating in areas such as sharing of fibre infrastructure, market practices, and data centres. According to an ET Telecom report, Mittal further said that Airtel is ready to take the lead in some areas. It is clearly indicated that Mittal meant tariffs here. Bharti Airtel might become the first telecom operator in India to go for aggressive tariffs. Mittal expects the average revenue per user (ARPU) to touch Rs 200 by the end of the Financial Year 2022 (FY22). Further, Mittal said that Airtel will opt for the relief measures from the government and would defer the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) and spectrum payments to improve the cash flow of the company. According to Mittal, deferment of payments for would mean a breather of about "Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 crore and an interest of Rs 7,000 crore." It was interesting to see Mittal saying that Airtel wants to see the details of the government taking equity in the company against the interest payments. This means Airtel is open to offering an equity stake to the government if the deal favours.
iPad Mini 2021 a Better Bet Than iPad Mini 2020 Posted: 16 Sep 2021 07:37 AM PDT Apple unveiled a plethora of products across categories. Of these, the iPad mini 2021 took over the spotlight as it was a major upgrade as compared to its predecessor. The new iPad mini 2021 gets the power from the new Apple A15 Bionic chip, which makes it an upgraded variant to the iPad mini 2020. So, here are the differences between the iPad mini 2021 and iPad mini 2020. iPad mini 2021 vs iPad mini 2020: All DifferencesThe most appealing aspect of the iPad mini 2021 is the new improved display. The upgraded iPad mini gets an All-Screen design, shrunk bezels at the top and bottom, which leads to a larger 8.3-inch display without increasing its overall footprint. The bezels are symmetric on all sides and there is a Liquid Retina Display. Also, it has the Touch ID embedded at the button on the top. In terms of performance, the iPad mini 2021 is a major leap as it comes with an A15 Bionic chipset. It brings in 5G connectivity and there is a new Neural Engine for 2x improvements as compared to the A12 Bionic used on the iPad mini 2020. Besides this, the A15 Bionic is touted to deliver 80% improved graphics performance. The new iPad mini 2021 gets a camera that is almost on par with that of the iPhone. There is a 12MP front camera with Centre Stage support. Also, the rear camera is an upgraded 12MP sensor with Focus Pixels. As per Apple, the rear camera has a wider aperture but the exact aperture is not known for now. In comparison, the yesteryear model features an 8MP camera sensor with an f/2.4 aperture.iPad mini 2021 Pricing And AvailabilityWith these improvements and upgrades, the iPad mini 2021 comes in both Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular variants. Both these variants have two storage configurations – 64GB and 256GB. The Wi-Fi variants are priced starting from Rs 46,900 and the Wi-Fi + Cellular variant is priced starting from Rs 60,900. When it comes to availability, the upgraded iPad mini is already up for pre-order and will be available from September 24.
Oppo Enco Buds Review: Perfect Affordable TWS Earphones Posted: 16 Sep 2021 05:56 AM PDT The Oppo Enco Buds were launched a couple of days back in India. In the first impressions of these affordable Truly Wireless Stereo (TWS) earphones, I said that these are too good in sound, and they look oddly beautiful. After using them for almost five days or so, I can say I stand by my statement. In the past few days, I have watched a movie on these earphones, heard songs, took them on the run, and played multiplayer games wearing them. Here's what I feel about the Oppo Enco Buds. Oppo Enco Buds Review: Performance If you want to see how the buds look and their design and body, you can refer to the first impressions article. Today, we are going to talk about the performance of the Enco Buds. The Oppo Enco Buds have kind of created a new league in the TWS earphone segment. I say this because of multiple reasons. Firstly, they have a very light body. Second, the performance of the Enco Buds is at par with a TWS earphone priced in the Rs 5,000 – Rs 6,000 range. Third, they look minimalistic and premium. Fourth, the battery life is just amazing. Fifth, they pair so quickly with any device. Believe me; I have been wearing the Enco Buds while doing almost anything and everything. While I was eating food or watching a TV show on my smartphone or whether was am running, I had them by my side at all times. Like any good TWS earphones, they are very easy to carry. Further, the sound quality is just too good. They don't feel like affordable earphones, to be honest ( I mean, they feel premium). The fit in the ear is just so smooth and comfortable. They don't fall off that easily, so you can wear them while running, but be a little cautious anyway. Further, listening to songs on these earbuds is just a different experience than what you get with an affordable earphone. The bass is right, and the sound clarity is there, along with AI-noise cancellation while voice calls. I didn't get a single disturbing experience with the Oppo Enco Buds. If you are looking for a TWS earphone in the affordable range, these earphones can fit your needs. I would continue listening to songs in the Enco Buds at least for a few months. These look durable so far, but I don't really know how much of an impact the case or the earbuds can face. Oppo Enco Buds Performance During Gaming If you don't know, the Oppo Enco Buds is made with gaming in mind. If you are looking for an ultra-low-latency earphone experience, the Oppo Enco Buds can be worth considering. You can triple tap on the earbuds to activate the gaming mode. It will boost the performance of the earphones and ensure that the sound and the contents on the screen are completely in sync with each other. I played games such as Asphalt 9 and Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) wearing the Oppo Enco Buds, and I had a smooth experience. Since they fit comfortably in my ears, I really like they are not a burden on my head which is something I appreciate from an affordable earphone. Oppo Enco Buds Performance While Running The Oppo Enco Buds performance was really well while I was running or exercising. I love to run, and I would dislike the run if my music is interrupted. I would play really high-tempo and upbeat songs, and the Enco Buds delivered the sound waves into my ears like butter. The Oppo Enco Buds, for some reason, feel underpriced to me. Like Oppo could have really priced them at a much higher point of Rs 3,500 or Rs 4,000 easily. But the fact that the company is underpricing the product shows that it is looking to disrupt the TWS earphones segment. Oppo Enco Buds: Honest Review and Conclusion Honestly, the Enco Buds are truly great. The price to performance ratio is just too much in favour of the customers. Whether you are listening to music, attending online classes, or are in a video conference, you can wear these with comfort. Talking about the battery life, honestly, I haven't charged them once since I took them out of the box six days ago. The charging case always bumps the earphones up to 100% charge, and the case hasn't asked for a charge until now. I don't know when it will, but the later it is, the better the experience. The quick pair functionality of these earphones is great as well. The Oppo Enco Buds are very quick to pair with any device, be it a laptop or my phone. You are truly going to appreciate what a masterpiece these earphones are. They are available in the market already. For a special sale, Oppo was selling the Enco Buds for Rs 1,799 from September 14 to September 16, 2021, which is actually an unbelievable deal. But the actual price of the earphones is Rs 1,999 after September 16, 2021. At Rs 2,000, these earphones are still outstanding because of their performance and the overall value that they deliver. One more thing, since they are also IP54 dust and water-resistant, you don't need to worry about running in dusty conditions and even sweating profusely while wearing them. Under Rs 2,000, the Oppo Enco Buds would be an excellent choice for almost anyone. They are great for gaming and whatnot.
Tariff Hikes Necessary for Telecom Sector Despite Relief Measures: Brickwork Ratings Posted: 16 Sep 2021 03:56 AM PDT The government yesterday announced a bailout package for the telecom sector. Brickwork Ratings has called the measures a "much-needed breather" for the industry. The telcos will now not have to worry about paying the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues and spectrum usage charges in the next four years. However, the interest on the dues will be added up and will be payable to the government once the moratorium period ends. Brickwork Ratings has called for the need for tariff hikes. The rating agency said that the "woes" of the industry could only be solved with tariff hikes. This makes sense because if not now, the telcos will have to pay the dues at a later date (with interest added). Brickwork Ratings Believe Government Reforms Are in Right Direction, But Tariff Hikes NecessaryBrickwork Ratings said that the average revenue per user (ARPU) for the industry needs to reach at least the Rs 200 level for the industry to operate smoothly. The current rate of return on their investments for the telcos is very less largely because of the low ARPU industrywide. The tariffs are too low for the operators to earn sizeable profits. Even if there are a few profits, they can't all be reinvested into the networks. A lot of money has to go towards research and development (R&D), statuary dues, unforeseen expenses, and more. For the telcos to actually give premium services, they need to earn in premium. Also, the industry isn't getting new institutional investors at the moment because of the low tariffs and subsequently low ARPU. No investor would want to tie up their money into an industry where the rate of return is very low. But again, the two top operators including Airtel and Jio might not go for aggressive tariff hikes right away for getting a larger market share and because of this, Vodafone Idea's hands are tied up as well.
Vodafone Idea Limited Position as Going Concern Cemented Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:56 AM PDT Vodafone Idea Limited's (VIL) future, until yesterday, was mixed in dark clouds. Things weren't clear, and the company had failed to secure any new investors. However, with the announcement of the relief package, one thing's fixed, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is not going to go out of the market, even in the long-term, at least that's what the evidence suggests. The company's visibility as a "going concern" has increased with the measures announced by the government. The government said that it will covert a part of differed dues and the interest accrued on them to equity if the telcos' can't clear their debt. In the worst-case scenario, if Vodafone Idea can't clear its dues, it will become a government entity. But at the end of the day, with the new rules, it is ensured that the current market structure won't be broken. In fact, in the 5G era, India might see new operators being a part of the ecosystem. Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel Don't Have Much to GainReliance Jio and Bharti Airtel don't have much to gain from the relief package. But the telcos will benefit from the new spectrum norms during the 5G spectrum auction. One thing's worth noting though, Vodafone Idea's problems aren't solved yet. The telco still hasn't received relief on the bank guarantees of the existing dues. According to a note from ICICI Securities, Vi hasn't gotten any kind of relief on immediate payments with respect to the spectrum usage charges, and there hasn't been any adjustment for GST that is pending with the government. ICICI Securities said that VIL might not survive long enough if there are no tariff hikes. This is because even though there are some relief measures in place now, the telco still has other liabilities to meet. The telco has to renew bank guarantees worth Rs 120 billion in the next 12 months and it also has an upcoming NCD payment of Rs 60 billion from December 2021.
Vodafone Idea Could Reduce Debt By Converting It to Equity Posted: 16 Sep 2021 02:23 AM PDT The kind of debt Vodafone Idea has, it will be very hard for the telco to pay it all in the next few years. The relief package will help the telco in stabilising a lot, but it will still require Vi to increase its revenues significantly and that too very fast to reach a good position. To ease the pain of the telcos even further, the Indian government is working on a mechanism that will allow the telcos to surrender a part of their company's equity against the debt they owe to the Centre. According to an ET Telecom report, the government will be ready to take equity against the interest accruing over the telcos' four-year moratorium amount. Converting even a small part of debt into equity will be good for both the government and the companies both. DoT and FinMin Working at The Mechanism Right NowThe Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Finance Minister (FinMin) are working on the mechanism right now. It will soon be clear how the telcos can go ahead with converting their debt into equity for the government. The telcos might be able to do this in two ways. One would be to convert the total interest accrued after four years into equity for the government, or the second would be to convert the interest owed at the end of each year into equity. If Vodafone Idea goes with the payment deferral option, the telco's debt towards the government will increase by Rs 15,000 crore in the form of interest accrued. Now either the telco could pay this amount to the government, or it can give up a part of its equity to the Center. The great thing is, this ensures that the telco wouldn't shut down due to debt. The government is here to save it and the complete telecom sector. The DoT and FinMin should work out the details soon enough.
| BSNL Offers These Affordable 4G Plans to Customers Posted: 16 Sep 2021 01:11 AM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers multiple 4G prepaid plans to customers. If we are talking about affordable plans, then BSNL is right at the top of our list. This is because even though the company's plans don't have the backing of a 4G network, they can still offer a lot of value to the customers. These plans are even better when you are looking for something significant to back you up in your secondary SIM. If you are looking for affordable 4G recharge plans, these are some of the best that you can get from BSNL. | 5G Spectrum Auctions Might Happen In Four Months Posted: 16 Sep 2021 12:23 AM PDT The most awaited event for the telecom industry of India is the 5G spectrum auctions. The government said that it had fixed the last quarter of the early year as the time period when the spectrum auctions will take place. Looking at this, it is absolutely clear that the 5G spectrum auctions might happen in January, February, or March of 2022. Ashwini Vaishnaw, Telecom Minister, recently said that the 5G spectrum auctions in India will most probably take place in February of 2022. According to a PTI report, the telecom minister further said that the government will try to hold the auctions as early as January 2022, which is only four months away from now. Speaking about the spectrum prices, Vaishnaw said that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is currently in the consulting phase; thus, once the regulator comes out with the final recommendations, only then he will give his views on it. 5G Spectrum Auctions Pricing Concern a Major OneIn such a low average revenue per user (ARPU) market, the Indian telcos will be wary of how much they spend on the spectrum they purchase. Because of low returns on investments, the telcos won't want to spend anything 'premium' on the spectrum they get for 5G. Airtel has said in the past that it will go ahead with the 4G spectrum and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology if it doesn't get the 5G spectrum at a fair price. The telcos already have plenty of 4G spectrum, and this scenario is possible. Even the 700 MHz spectrum band has seen no takers because of the same reason of unfair pricing from the government. It is worth noting that the 700 MHz spectrum will play a very crucial role in the rollout of 5G networks in India. The telcos are currently testing their 5G networks in the 3.5 GHz spectrum band in different parts of the country. Thus they are expected to go for this spectrum band initially in the auctions. |

Posted: 15 Sep 2021 09:41 PM PDT Atria Convergence Technologies (ACT), the fourth largest wired broadband service provider in India "believes in radical social transformation," says Bala Malladi, chief executive officer at ACT. Malladi told TelecomTalk that the company seeks to empower "individuals with access to high speed data," with ACT "working to fulfil" its vision through the Hy-Fi project. The Telangana government in partnership with ACT, the company offering wired broadband service under ACT Fibernet launched over 3000 hotspots in Hyderabad as part of the Hy-Fi project in early August. Hy-Fi Project Can Be Replicated Across India: MalladiThe project enables users to browse the internet "free" for 45 minutes at 25 Mbps speed till 1GB data. Malladi said that the Hy-Fi project in Hyderabad is a "great model that can be replicated" across India to "speed up internet adoption" in the country. "For the first time, the state government of Telangana has implemented a project of this magnitude to provide internet connectivity to its citizens," Malladi told TelecomTalk. "We are looking forward to developing a stronger Wi-Fi-enabled ecosystem and contribute to bridging the gap of the digital divide in cities where we are present in." The chief executive officer at ACT said that the COVID pandemic "forced everyone to go online" for various reasons including schooling, e-health and to access government services. "However, one of the biggest challenges that persist in the society is the huge digital disparity," Malladi said. "While a lot of people may have access to phones and [the] internet, high-speed internet where you could connect seamlessly to complete your everyday tasks became a challenge." Malladi said that the company "tried to bridge this gap" and thus "worked on the Hy-Fi project" to "harness the full power of broadband by making it available, accessible, and usable to all members of the society."Stable, Robust Internet Connection Not Just Essential But A Lifeline: MalladiThe users seeking to access the internet beyond the free 45 minutes are required to activate the top-up plans priced at Rs 25 and Rs 50 exclusive of taxes. "Getting permissions, setting up spaces, and developing infrastructure to install the hotspots were indeed challenging but with the support of the Telangana government, we executed the project smoothly," Malladi said. The pack priced at Rs 25 enables users to access the internet for 60 minutes at 25 Mbps speed till 2GB. Further, the top-tier pack enables users to browse the internet for three hours at 25 Mbps speed till 4GB. "With the pandemic crisis raging, we realized how deeply internet connectivity can impact lives and [the] economy," Malladi said. "With digital technologies increasingly being at the heart of the business and everyday interactions, having limited internet access often hinders access to basic needs and services." It has to be noted that the existing ACT Fibernet users can log in to the Hy-Fi portal with their ACT credentials with the consumed data "counted from their monthly data plan." The public WiFi hotspots in Hyderabad are said to be located across malls, hospitals, metro stations, public parks and educational institutions. Malladi said that a "stable and robust internet connection is not just essential but is a lifeline" and that the company has been "pushing boundaries" and ensuring that its service is "seamless." "Even though we have made significant progress in internet speed over the last decade, there is still a large scope of growth and innovation which we will be focusing on to meet our customers’ demand and provide them with a superior customer experience," Malladi said.
Bharti Airtel Recent Moves That Will Help It Grow Substantially Posted: 15 Sep 2021 06:36 PM PDT Bharti Airtel is following similar strategies as that of Reliance Jio. While both telcos have different ways of acquiring customers, their corporate structure, as well as way of doing business, is pretty similar. For example, Bharti Airtel last year changed its corporate structure wherein the telco shifted all of its digital assets and businesses, including Wynk Music, Mitra Payments, Airtel Xstream, Airtel IQ, Airtel Thanks, and Airtel Secure, under one subsidiary called Airtel Digital. While at the same time, the telco moved all the broadband, mobile network, DTH business and enterprise business under a newly carved out subsidiary called Airtel Ltd. This is very similar to that of Jio's structure, where Jio Platforms holds all the key digital platforms, including JioNews, JioSaavn, JioTV, and JioCinema. Note that Reliance Jio is controlled by Jio Platforms. The reason why the telcos have segregated their networks business and digital consumer business is to avoid paying adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues to the government on non-telecom revenues. It is worth noting that the government today redefined AGR dues and said the AGR dues would not be calculated on non-telecom revenues. There are more similarities between the two companies. Bharti Airtel Going the Jio Way With Rights IssueBharti Airtel recently said that it would be raising up to Rs 21,000 crores through a rights issue which is similar to what Jio did in June 2020. Like Jio, Airtel has asked the subscribers to pay only 25% of the money on an application. The rest of the money can be paid in two different instalments. Airtel is giving subscribers to pay the remaining amount in 36 months, while Jio had given 17 months. Both Jio and Airtel promised to pay and subscribe to the leftover/unsubscribed portion of the issue, which means the issue had a solid backing in Jio's case, and the same will be in Airtel's case. With the rights issue helped by other measures, including a tariff hike, Airtel is looking to reduce its debt to EBITDA ratio. The same move was played by Reliance Jio. Mukesh Ambani, Managing Director and Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) had said in 2019 that he is looking to make Reliance a debt-free company in 18 months. As a matter of fact, he was able to do that much faster. The cases mentioned above are clear indicators that while Bharti Airtel likes to create a unique and premium brand for itself in the market.

The government yesterday announced a bailout package for the telecom sector. Vodafone Idea Limited's (VIL) future, until yesterday, was mixed in dark clouds. Things weren't clear, and the company had failed to secure any new investors. However, with the announcement of the relief package, one thing's fixed, Vodafone Idea (Vi) is not going to go out of the market, even in the long-term, at least that's what the evidence suggests. Bharti Airtel is following similar strategies as that of Reliance Jio.
