5G Bands In India That You Should Look Out For Posted: 22 Sep 2021 12:49 PM PDT 5G smartphones and 5G bands have made a lot of noise in the Indian market. Most of all because the government and the telcos have not given a lot of clarity on which spectrum bands will 5G be rolled out in India. This affects each and every Indian individual since if he/she is going to purchase a 5G smartphone and they don't even know which smartphones support the correct spectrum bands for 5G, they might end up spending all their money on the wrong devices. But here is something that you should know about the 5G bands. 5G Bands That Will Be Supported In IndiaFirst of all, it is worth noting that each and every telecom operator, including Reliance Jio, Vodafone Idea (Vi), and Bharti Airtel, are testing their 5G networks in the 3.5 GHz spectrum allotted to them by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). For the unaware, this is the N78 5G band. Further, what's interesting is that most of the 5G smartphones in India come with support for N78 bands. This will ensure that all the devices that come with N78 band support be future proof for 5G. Note that the official announcement from the telecom operators and the government is yet to come. As of now, the government is even unsure of whether to go with the 5Gi standard developed by the TSDSI or the 5G standards developed by the 3GPP. Purchasing a 5G smartphone just for the sake of 5G isn't the best decision right now. This is because even if 5G is launched in the first half of 2022, it will only be available across India after years. Right now, investing in a good 4G smartphone even for the next 3 to 4 years is a good option. 5G phones are way too overpriced at the moment, which means staying away from them is the right to do for now.
Telecom Operator Arrangements Critical to Disney+ Hotstar Posted: 22 Sep 2021 08:38 AM PDT Disney+ Hostar, the over-the-top (OTT) streaming platform run by Walt Disney owned Star India, has over 18,000 hours of "unparalleled content," says Bob Chapek, chief executive officer at Walt Disney. Chapek said that Walt Disney's approach with its direct-to-consumer offerings "across the world is that one size does not fit all." The chief executive officer at Walt Disney said that the company heads to the market with "different propositions, different utilities and different offerings." Chapek said that Disney+ Hotstar has a variety of content, including sports and that the Indian Premier League "is really an important asset" in India and that the company is "lucky to have it." IPL Resumption "Good News" for Disney+ HotstarWith the resumption of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chapek said that the company is witnessing a "combination of two things happening at once in India.” "Number one, there is that shift of timing of the IPL season, which is really an important factor, and it happened to be coincident with the annual expiration of a large cohort of subscribers," Chapek said in the annual Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference on Tuesday. In February, Christine McCarthy, chief financial officer at Walt Disney, said the "Disney+ Hotstar subscriber additions continued" its "strong growth trend" largely driven by the IPL. McCarthy, in the first-quarter earnings call for the period ended January 2, 2021, said that the company even made it "economical" for its users to sign up for one-year packs. It has to be noted that the 2020 IPL season was held between September 19, 2020, to November 10, 2020. The 2021 IPL season was initially scheduled to be held between April 9, 2021, to the end of May. However, the rising COVID-19 cases within the IPL bubble meant that the season was halted in early May, with the season resuming on September 19, 2021. Chapek highlighted that the auto-renewal option is not permitted in India and that the company has to "get that cohort back" each and "every time you lose a cohort." "The good news is we’ve got IPL coming, so it’s going to be plenty of incentive to get some of those folks back, but you have to take a step back before you take a step forward in terms of those renewals," Chapek said. According to the guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India initially in August 2019, recurring transactions require additional authentication from the user during registration and the first transaction. The new guideline was initially set to go live by March 31, 2021, but has now been extended to September 30, 2021.Disney+ Hotstar "Confident" to "Reclaim" its User BaseThe chief executive officer at Walt Disney said that the company is "confident" that it can "reclaim" all its users that it loses due to the lack of auto-renewal options. "But it’s not just about the content; it’s primarily about the content because it’s also about having those distribution arrangements with the local mobile carriers," Chapek said. "And then even once you have that, you’ve got to have the consideration to deliver your product with low bandwidth because that’s what that market requires." Similar to Disney+ Hotstar, other major Indian streaming platforms including Zee5 and Sun NXT have also inked deals with the telecom operators. In August, SL Narayanan, group chief financial officer at Sun TV Network said that the telecom operators receive "restricted access" to Sun NXT portfolio. Meanwhile, Chapek said the company is "making more and more core Disney products available" to its users in India as it is "also what they love, but there are things that are unique." "And I think it’s really being sort of tuned into what’s required and hey, let’s not forget all the sports offerings that we have at the same time," Chapek said. In August, the Walt Disney company revised the subscriptions plans for Disney+ Hotstar, with the new plans effective from September 1, 2021. The three new Disney+ Hotstar plans priced at Rs 499, Rs 899 and Rs 1499 offers users access to all the content available on the streaming platform. The differences between the three Disney+ Hotstar plans are restricted to the video and audio quality along with advertisements. The company earlier required users to subscribe to its premium plan priced at Rs 1499 to access the English shows and the Disney content in the English language.

Galaxy A13 5G Might Be Most Affordable 5G Smartphone From Samsung Posted: 22 Sep 2021 06:26 AM PDT Currently, Samsung Galaxy A22 5G is the most affordable 5G smartphone from the company. Late last month, a report revealed that the company is working on yet another 5G smartphone – the Samsung Galaxy A13. It is said that this upcoming device will take over the mantle of the Galaxy A22 5G. Now, a report by GalaxyClub has shared more details regarding the Samsung Galaxy A13 hinting that the device could be launched sometime soon. As per the publication, the upcoming Samsung smartphone will arrive with the model number SM-A136B. In addition to confirming the existence of the device, it also has shared the camera and battery specifications of this device. It is believed that the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G could be launched later this year. However, it will be released only in early 2022. Samsung Galaxy A13 5G Rumored SpecsThe publication has spilled the beans on some specifications of the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G, which could be launched as the most affordable 5G smartphone from the company. In terms of specs, the publication has hinted that it could arrive with a 50MP primary camera at its rear. Unfortunately, the details of the sensor and other camera sensors are not known. Going by the recent budget smartphone launches such as Redmi 10 feature a 50MP Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor. Having said that, the upcoming Samsung smartphone in question could also use the same sensor. Apart from the camera sensor, the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G could be backed by a 5000mAh battery. This is not uncommon as budget smartphones usually feature a more capacious battery. Even the Galaxy A12, the previous generation model came with a 5000mAh battery under its hood. Besides these, the other specs of the Samsung Galaxy A13 5G remain unknown for now. We can expect further details of the upcoming smartphone to be revealed in the coming days or weeks. If Samsung launches this as the most affordable 5G smartphone in its portfolio, we can expect the smartphone to compete hard against rivals from other brands, especially Chinese players to face the heat. In that case, the smartphone will arrive with competitive specifications.
Vodafone Idea to Get Funding Soon: Takkar Posted: 22 Sep 2021 05:06 AM PDT One of the leading telcos, Vodafone Idea will thrive and be competitive in the telecom market. It will invest the cash saved during the four-year moratorium on AGR dues and spectrum payments. This amount will be used to expand its network and take part in 5G auctions rather than repaying debt. This was announced by Ravinder Takkar, the company's managing director. In the first media interaction, Takkar expressed his views. He said the government announced that the relief package offered by the government for the telecom sector will take care of all concerns of prospective investors. Furthermore, he added that the cash-strapped company will be able to close the fundraising in the near future. Vodafone Idea shares closed at 3.9 percent lower on the BSE at Rs 10.39 on Wednesday. View On Relief PackageNotably, the comments from Takkar have come after a week of the government's announcement of a four-year moratorium on the AGR and spectrum payments. As per analysts, this move will let Vodafone Idea defer a cumulative payment of almost Rs 1 lakh crore, which is around Rs 24,000 to Rs 25,000 crore on an annual basis over a period of four years. The other crucial reforms involved include providing the operators the option to pay the interest amount that arise due to the deferment of payment by equity. The Centre provides the option to the telcos to convert their dues as a result of the deferred payment into equity post the moratorium period. The guidelines of the same will be finalised by the finance industry.Increase In TariffsFurthermore, Takkar added that he will not speculate on the cash flow relief. He added that the telco will get due to the moderation and that it is awaiting the calculation and guidelines of the government. He added that Vodafone Idea will not shy away from raising tariffs as it is important to improve their financials. Commenting on this, he added that pricing is an important element in the industry and it is the cause of some of the challenges that are faced by the industry. Now, with the package and the messaging from the government in a move to back the industry, it creates a situation that will move the pricing up the trajectory.
DoT Appoints K Rajaraman New Telecom Secretary Posted: 22 Sep 2021 04:16 AM PDT Kalyanaraman Rajaraman has been appointed by the Center as the new secretary in DoT (Department of Telecommunications). He has replaced Anshu Prakash, who was the former DoT secretary. Notably, K Rajaraman is a Tamil Nadu cadre 1989-batch Indian Administrative Services (IAS) officer. Currently, he is working as an additional secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA). K Rajaraman will take over his new role post the superannuation of Prakash on September 30, 2021. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet conveyed the decision about the appointment to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). Notably, in August 2019, Prakash took over the role as the DoT secretary. He replaced Aruna Sundarajan, an IAS officer of the Kerala cadre 1982 batch. She retired on July 31, 2021, after playing the role for two years. K Rajaraman Appointed As DoT Telecom SecretaryBack in 2018, Kalyanaraman Rajaraman was appointed as the additional secretary of investments in the Department of Economic Affairs with major responsibilities areas. He will look over Investment Protection Treaties (NPT) negotiations. He will oversee the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund. Furthermore, he worked towards fostering economic relations across the world, especially G20 and BRICS countries. His appointment in the DoT as the secretary is seen as a step in the ambition of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. This move will attract foreign direct investment (FDI) post the reform package to de-stress telcos, which was announced last week. Notably, the telecom sector has been consolidated into a three-year player private market. In this market, the state-owned telcos Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL) also operate. Besides K Rajaraman, Rajiv Bansal, the Air India Chairman, has been appointed as the new aviation secretary as part of a major high-end bureaucratic reshuffle effected by the Centre. Bansal is a 1988 batch lAS officer of Nagaland cadre, and he replaces Pradeep Singh Kharola upon his retirement this month. Also, Steel Secretary Pradip Kumar Tripathi has been appointed as the Secretary of DoPT. Govind Mohan, Additional Secretary in the Department of Home, has been appointed as the Secretary, Ministry of Culture. Among the appointees is Anurag Jain, Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority. He will play the role of Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.
iPhones Might Get Game Changing Feature Very Soon Posted: 22 Sep 2021 03:28 AM PDT Apple iPhones are loaded with features that will help users in many ways. Reportedly, Apple is working on adding a new feature that will detect mental health conditions of users, including depression and anxiety. A recent report states that the company has collaborated with the University of California and Biogen, a pharmaceutical company, to develop this feature and help diagnose the mental health of users with the help of their biometric data. Apple iPhones To Get Game-Changing FeatureA report by Wall Street Journal report noted that the feature to detect mental heath would use sensor data, including the duration of sleep, physical activities, mobility and the users' typing behaviour. With these data, it will detect if the user is suffering from cognitive decline or depression. The other data that will be used by the company for this purpose include facial expression analysis and heart rate. For this, Apple will use its powerful face scanning hardware on iPhones. The report also notes that this upcoming game-changing feature is already under testing. The University of California is studying stress, depression and anxiety for 3,000 users with their Apple Watch and iPhone data. These users have volunteered to be tracked as a part of the study. Furthermore, this Apple project that is under testing and lets iPhone users detect mental conditions is in collaboration with UCLA. It is codenamed Seebreeze, while the other project with Biogen is codenamed Pi. Reportedly, the project was piloted in 2020, and the Cupertino tech giant recorded data from 150 users for its special project. It has been noted that the researchers will use this data obtained from iPhone and Apple Watch sensors to detect users' mental conditions. The users who have volunteered to be tracked will be asked to fill a set of questions. Notably, Apple intends to use the feature to alert users showing signs of cognitive impairment at an early stage with this project. It is known that early detection will help users from developing serious illnesses such as Alzheimer's. Also, with Biogen, Apple intends to track nearly 20,000 people as a part of this project.
Reliance Jio Low ARPU Concern Over Long-Term Posted: 22 Sep 2021 02:24 AM PDT Reliance Jio's low average revenue per user (ARPU) figure is a concern over the long term. Jio likes to play on large scales and keep its profits marginal from each user. Because of this, the telco's ARPU is considerably less than that of its top competitor Bharti Airtel. Yes, even with marginal profits from individual users, the telco's total volume of profits is quite high. Jio has been able to manage its market standing at the top because of the number of 4G subscribers it has. But even with this, if the telco's ARPU don't see a gain, its profits should ideally start narrowing. The larger concern here is that the investments with 5G and further enhancements for 4G will require more and more money and if there's even a slight choke in the subscribers addition or if the ARPU falls down even further, it will negatively impact the company. Reliance Jio Can Do This to Raise ARPUThe thing is simple – tariff hikes. This move from the telco will not only help Vodafone Idea, but the entire industry. It will further allow the telcos to offer better services since they will be able to make more investments in the network if they are earning more. The return on investment for the telecom industry in India at the moment is quite low. One of the reasons for that is low tariffs. Jio has made the statement it had to with gaining the largest subscriber market share in the industry. But this has happened at the cost of the ARPU for the industry. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises has already said that the ARPU of the industry must retune to Rs 200 levels to help it sustain itself over the long term. With 5G on the way, the telcos will have to invest more in both the infrastructure at the ground level as well as the spectrum which will not be cheap. Jio's low ARPU has been a low-key concern for well-wishers of the company. Hopefully, with 5G and tariff raise, it will change.
Huawei Banking on 5G Revenues from India Posted: 22 Sep 2021 12:54 AM PDT Huawei, a Chinese multinational telecom equipment gear maker, is optimistic about its India plans. The company believes that it can have a key role in the development of 5G in India. It is worth noting that the Indian government had asked the telcos not to include any Chinese company in their 5G trials. Despite that, Huawei is banking on 5G revenues from India. Huawei is continuously working and communicating with the government. The company has highlighted its clean track record for the past two decades that it has been a part of the Indian ecosystem. David Li, Huawei India CEO, said that long-term commitment for the company isn't just a few words. Li said that Huawei had built a legacy of working in India for over 20 years with a very clean track record. India-China Tensions Made Things Tough for HuaweiThe increasing differences and tension between India and China have put Chinese companies doing business in India in a tough spot. Huawei has helped the telecom operators in India set their legacy networks up till 4G. Thus, it will be a big miss for the company if it can't help Indian operators with 5G too. As per the publication's report, Huawei has received login credentials from the Indian government for accessing the trusted telecom products portal. Huawei CEO iterated that every employee in the company is trained thoroughly to ensure that compliance with the rules of the government is a must. Further, Huawei conducts internal and external audits at regular intervals to ensure that its process and way of working is completely compliant and fair. Huawei CEO said that the company would stick to its guns which is leading the research and development (R&D) segment in addition to delivering faster networks at the right cost to the companies. It is true that Huawei provides telecom gear at an affordable price to the telcos. Only time will tell if Huawei's optimism is actually something.
Vodafone Idea Will Not Get Fresh Capital from Vodafone Group Plc Posted: 21 Sep 2021 11:21 PM PDT Multiple reports saying the promoters of Vodafone Idea (Vi) will infuse capital soon into the company have surfaced online. However, Vodafone Group Plc, one of the promoters of the company, isn't going to infuse any more of its money into Vodafone Idea. This is a little surprising since if Vi wants outside capital, the promoters must show confidence first and give their money to the telco. No official word from the Aditya Birla Group (ABG), another promoter of the company has come yet. Relief Package Still Doesn't Instil Confidence In Vodafone IdeaIt looks like the relief package announced by the government isn't enough for the Vodafone Group Plc. The promoter still doesn't want to infuse any more capital into the company. According to a Business Standard report, a spokesperson from the Vodafone Group said that the company still has the same stance of not infusing any more equity into the company. The speculation about the promoters stepping in to help the company looks like nothing now. If Vodafone Group isn't ready to infuse any capital, it doesn't feel like the ABG will be very excited to do the same. Looking at this, no outside investor will put their money into Vodafone Idea. If the promoters are hesitant in helping the company, it just shows that they are still not confident about its future. Despite the relief package, the telco still has lakhs of crores worth of debt in its books which it will need to pay once the moratorium period is over. It looks like Vodafone Idea is on its own from here on. The telco will need to invest heavily in its networks, scale enterprise business, and increase average revenue per user (ARPU) so that it can sustain in the future. The relief package is just a short-term measure and it will only go so long to help the company. It has given it a chance of survival but it won't be enough if the telco doesn't do anything to change it.
5 GHz or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Network, Which Should You Connect to? Posted: 21 Sep 2021 10:31 PM PDT Broadband connections are common aspects seen in many households in recent years. People prefer broadband connections as the trends such as remote working and online education prevail worldwide due to the pandemic. Broadband connections do not experience network congestions that are faced by cellular networks. At the same time, broadband connections have a limited range and provide high-speed internet connectivity. When it comes to broadband connections, there are two bands – 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Here, we will detail which one to choose. Should You Choose 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi Network? If you want a higher range from your broadband connection so that you can get internet in any part of your home, then you can connect with the 2.4 GHz band. If you need a higher internet speed, then you should opt for a router with support for the 5 GHz band. This does not mean that the 2.4 GHz band does not provide a good internet speed but the 5 GHz band offers a relatively higher speed. Eventually, the 5 GHz speed is perfect for a seamless experience. If you are not able to purchase a dual-band router that supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands, then you can go for a single-band router option. In that case, you will get to know which router you should go for from here. Firstly, the size of your home is an important factor to be considered. If your house is big, then you should opt for a 2.4 GHz router for improved bandwidth. If you have a small house, then go with a 5 GHz router. Also, if there are many obstacles that might interfere with the connection, then go for a 5 GHz band router. If you use a lot of other devices including Bluetooth gadgets, microwave ovens and more that use the same frequency, then go for a 2.4 GHz band router. Nextly, the kind of device you will connect the broadband router to is also a factor. If you want it to handle internet browsing and basic work-related tasks, then go for a 2.4 GHz band router. If you use the internet connection for streaming videos in HD, then opt for a 5 GHz band router.
KYC Process for Telecom Service Subscribers Simplified: Vaishnaw Posted: 21 Sep 2021 09:07 PM PDT The Know Your Customer (KYC) process for the telecom subscribers has been simplified now. The KYC process allows customers to subscribe to a new SIM service without any need of contact, papers, and saves everyone a lot of time. Ashwini Vaishnaw, telecom minister of India tweeted that KYC process has been simplified for the telecom subscribers. For the unaware, the measure was announced with the relief package for the industry. Government Reintroduces e-KYC for Telecom SubscribersThe government has reintroduced Aadhar based e-KYC for the issue of new mobile connections. For the same, the telcos will be charged Rs 1 per customer for the authentication by UIDAI. The best thing is that it is completely a digital process. The customer's picture along with the demographic details are provided to the telecom operators by the UIDAI. The customer can now get a SIM card delivered to his/her home without going anywhere to complete the KYC process. The self-KYC can be done electronically with the help of verification from UIDAI or DigiLocker. Further, the government said that users can convert from prepaid to postpaid or vice versa service simply with the help of a One Time Password (OTP). The user doesn't need to go to a retail outlet of any telco to complete the process. Everything can now be done sitting in the home. Presently, for completing the process, a user needs to travel to a Point of Sale (retail outlet) keeping his/her original identity document for the verification process. This takes a lot of time for both the customer and the company in issuing a new SIM. But with the help of the new measures now customers will be able to do everything from getting a new SIM to converting prepaid to postpaid or vice versa simply sitting at the home. The changes were much needed and will save everyone a lot of time.
Vodafone Idea Could Benefit With Shared Infra Cost in 5G Posted: 21 Sep 2021 06:33 PM PDT 5G is going to be the next revolution in the connectivity standards, and it is going to come with its share of challenges. One of the biggest issues that Vodafone Idea (Vi) and other telcos will have to navigate through will be delivering the network seamlessly to the end-user. Since 5G networks would operate on a higher spectrum band, they will require even denser infrastructure and backhaul to support the connectivity. This will involve a lot of costs for the telcos since they will essentially have to spend on both spectrum and the ground-level infrastructure. But there's something that the telcos can do, and it is something that will benefit Vodafone Idea a lot. Vodafone Idea Can Collaborate With Jio and Airtel to Save MoneyVodafone Idea can collaborate and work with the top two operators, Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, to save their money. Both Jio and Airtel have enough money to sustain and keep investing in their networks. Yes, with the relief package in place, even Vodafone Idea can do it, but that is only possible to a certain extent. If Vi can make Jio and Airtel share the infra cost with it, it will benefit everyone. This will also push the telecom connectivity standards a little higher. Vi has a lot of debt, and even with the relief package, it can't invest a lot in its networks very aggressively. Sunil Bharti Mittal recently said that he met Nick Read, CEO of Vodafone Group Plc, and talked with him about covering the lost ground. Mittal had further said that he would also talk to Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director (MD) of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), to approach the market with a coordinated strategy. If this thing happens, it will be a really good thing for the sector in the long run. Sharing infrastructure costs with each other will only result in a win-win situation for everyone. At the end of the day, Vodafone Idea is going to stay. Instead of beating down each other for a bigger market share, the telcos can go with a coordinated approach as Mittal has suggested and come with better results not only for themselves but for the entire industry. Neil Shah, Vice President, Counterpoint Research said that if there is no fibre in backhaul, 5G will not be successful even with large amounts of the spectrum at disposal. Shah said that if Jio lends its fibre to Vodafone Idea, it will be a win-win situation for both companies.
