| WhatsApp Banking Big on Payments Service In India Posted: 23 Sep 2021 08:15 AM PDT WhatsApp Payments, the UPI payment feature was rolled out to the instant messaging platform a few years back and was recalled due to several reasons. Again, it was rolled out to users earlier this year but it failed to get enough traction. Now, in an attempt to gain traction, WhatsApp Payments might follow the footsteps of Google Pay. Reportedly, WhatsApp is intending to give cashbacks to users who send money using the service. With this move, the Facebook-owned messaging platform intends to witness a boost in the usage of WhatsApp Payments WhatsApp Payments To Reward UsersAs per a recent report by WABetaInfo, the app might bring a feature that would reward users with a cashback. It is claimed that this feature is under development and might not be available for all users. Also, the publication has shared a screenshot to back its claim regarding the upcoming feature. The screenshot shows a new banner above the chats in the chat tab and it appears to be seen above the pinned conversations. The banner shows a gift icon and reads "Get cashback on your next payment". Also, it reads, "Tap to get started". Furthermore, the report notes that the cashback feature will be applicable only to users in India. Interestingly, any payment of Rs 10 or above will be eligible to get cashbacks. With this move, the platform eyes to increase the userbase of its UPI payment service that went out of beta in November last year. For now, WhatsApp has not alerted users regarding this new feature.WhatsApp Bets Big On PaymentsAs per a report by the Economic Times, WhatsApp appears to be betting big on the payments service in India. It is working towards creating awareness among users regarding the UPI service. The company intends to be working on a major ad campaign related to this service. | iPhone 13 Is 3x Better Than Fastest Android Posted: 23 Sep 2021 05:49 AM PDT The iPhone 13 models were just launched with the most powerful Apple chipset, the Apple A15 Bionic within it. As it uses the most efficient processor, it should be super fast, especially when pitted against Android flagships. As per a screenshot that is making rounds on Twitter by DHH, the iPhone 13 equipped with A15 Bionic is touted to be 3x better than the fastest Android device. Notably, this was observed while browsing the internet and rendering JavaScript. iPhone 13 vs Galaxy S21 Speed TestIn the Speedtest 2.0 that can be run through a web browser, it was shown that the iPhone 13 scores a whopping 238 points. In comparison, the fastest Android smartphone, the Galaxy S21 that is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor scores a meagre 84 points. To add to this, the Samsung Galaxy S21 in India uses the Exynos processor, which is not on par with the Snapdragon variant. Nevertheless, the Indian variant might achieve a much lower score. Furthermore, the benchmark also highlighted how fast the iPhone 13 can be as compared to the Galaxy S21. Going by the same, it highlights the lead that Apple has over Android makers, especially in terms of performance. With each passing year, Apple launches improved Apple Bionic processors that have an upper edge over rivals from Qualcomm and other chipmakers. This problem has become more acute now for the smartphones such as Samsung Galaxy S21 as there is a chip shortage, which has hampered the development of next-generation chipsets. We have come across reports that Apple is also facing issues due to the problems in the chip industry. Given that the Apple A15 Bionic is not a generational leap as compared to the A14 Bionic launched last year, the improvements in speed are modest for a competition against Apple. As the iPhones are already ahead of the Android phones' performance, this doesn't matter much. To conclude, the iPhone 13 with the A15 Bionic makes the device 3x or close to 200% faster than the Galaxy S21 despite the processor not being a complete revamp. |

Bharti Airtel Much Ahead of Jio in Active Subscribers in July 2021: TRAI Posted: 23 Sep 2021 02:23 AM PDT Bharti Airtel might not have as many 4G subscribers as Jio, but it still has more active subscribers than its competitor. Airtel focuses more on quality while Jio mostly on numbers. According to the monthly performance report shared by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Airtel's 97.74% users of the total subscriber base were active as compared to its rival Jio's 78.18% users of the total subscriber base. Even though Jio has added way more subscribers than Airtel in the month of July 2021, both the telcos had an identical number of active subscribers. Bharti Airtel had 346.07 million VLR subscribers (also referred to as active subscribers), while Reliance Jio had 346.49 million VLR subscribers. Vodafone Idea and BSNL Both Lose VLR SubscribersBoth Vodafone Idea (Vi) and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost active subscribers in the month of July 2021. Vi's VLR subscribers percentage dropped from 88.43% in June to 87.67% in July 2021. At the same time, BSNL's VLR subscribers percentage dropped from 50.63% to 50.49%. The most number of subscribers during the month was added by Reliance Jio, followed by Bharti Airtel, while both Vi and BSNL lost subscribers. Jio added 65,18,786 subscribers (6.51 million) while Airtel added 19,42,993 subscribers (1.94 million). Vodafone Idea lost 14,30,245 subscribers (1.43 million) while BSNL lost 10,17,669 subscribers (1.01 million). Even the huge number of subscribers added by Jio won't create a big difference for the company if a big chunk of them are inactive and the most subscribers out of the active ones are low average revenue per user (ARPU) customers. Jio had the biggest subscriber market share of 37.34%, followed by Bharti Airtel (29.83%), Vodafone Idea (22.91%), and BSNL (9.64%). It looks like an evenly poised market right now between the two top operators. If Airtel didn't have a lot of debt on its back, it might have been even ahead of Jio. It will be interesting to see how the market pans out in the coming months.
DoT Might Go to SC for Figuring Out Satcom Spectrum Allocation Posted: 23 Sep 2021 01:31 AM PDT The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is planning to move to the Supreme Court (SC) for understanding how it should proceed with the spectrum allocation to the satcom industry. The satcom industry and investors have asked DoT to not auction the spectrum, while on the other hand, the telecom companies operating terrestrial networks have argued that it should be the same rule for all. The telcos want the satcom industry to get its spectrum from the spectrum auction too. To clear out what it can and cannot do, the DoT is planning to move to SC. SC Order Has Put DoT In Confusing SituationAn order from the Supreme Court of India given in 2012 has put the DoT in a little confusing situation. The order says that the airwaves or spectrum are a scarce natural resource, and thus they will need to be provided to the interested parties through an auction. The SC order bars the government from administratively allocating the spectrum. But in the same year, a five-member bench had said that not all natural resources need to be seen in the same scope as airwaves/spectrum and thus auction should not be the sole criteria for each of them. As per an ET Telecom report, the DoT is planning to reach out to the SC for understanding what it can do in the respective situation. Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Enterprises, had previously said that the spectrum should be provided to the satcom companies without the auction route. Mittal had further pointed out that going the auction route would not even be in tune with the global procedure. Many of the industry bodies have argued that if the spectrum is sold or auctioned to the satcom companies, it will break their plans of investments in India. It is a peculiar situation for the government, and only time and the decision from SC will tell what will happen.
Bharti Airtel Increasing Metro Network Capacity for 5G Readiness Posted: 22 Sep 2021 11:16 PM PDT India's second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel, has partnered with Tejas Networks for expanding its optical network. Bharti Airtel has been making large strides in order to make its networks ready for 5G and also enhance its B2B and broadband services around the country. Under the deal, Tejas Networks will supply and install optical transmission network (OTN) for Bharti Airtel. This deal will help Airtel in extending Airtel's optical network towards the edge and will also help with the 5G backhaul. Bharti Airtel Partners With Tejas Networks to Expand Optical NetworkAccording to an ET Telecom report, Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Bharti Airtel, said that Airtel has been increasing the investments in its networks in the metro cities to ensure 5G readiness of the networks. Sekhon said that increased capacity would also help with catering to increased bandwidth consumption by fixed-line users and enterprise customers. Bharti Airtel's partnership with Tejas Networks will help the telco in making its networks aggressively ready for 5G and increased bandwidth demand in the future. It is worth noting that Tejas Networks recently sold a 43.3% stake of the company to Tata Sons for Rs 1,850 crore. What's interesting here is that Tata Sons is already working with Bharti Airtel for 5G. Airtel will be using the home-grown solutions provided by the Tata Group on its 5G networks. This partnership with Tejas Networks should certainly be a seamless experience of the common denominator Tata Group in the picture. India should see live 5G networks by the first half of 2022. There's still a long way to go and a lot of decisions that need to be taken. It will be a healthy competition between Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel when it comes to who will roll out the first 5G commercial network. Further, the subscriber market share in 5G is also something that the telcos will be looking to gain the upper hand on.

BSNL Beats Jio In Offering Long-Term Heavy Data Plan Posted: 22 Sep 2021 06:45 PM PDT Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) offers really economical plans and with great benefits. The same image is shared by Reliance Jio too. But there's one area where BSNL beats Jio comfortably, and it is in offering a heavy data long-term plan. Both the companies have one such plan in their portfolios, and Jio's plan is cut short severely by BSNL. Yes, BSNL doesn't have a PAN-India 4G network to back up its plans, but it is still a great offer for anyone if he/she can get into a good BSNL network zone. Which plan are we talking about? Let's find out. BSNL Heavy Data Plan That Beats JioBoth BSNL and Jio offer users a long-term 3GB daily data plan. BSNL offers its plan for Rs 2,399, while Jio offers its plan for Rs 3,499. The difference between both the plans is not only in the price but also in the benefits. The Rs 3,499 plan from Jio comes with 3GB daily data for 365 days, which means that users get 1095GB of total data with the plan along with 100 SMS/day and unlimited voice calling. There is no major over-the-top (OTT) benefit offered to the users but only a free subscription to a suite of Jio applications, including JioCinema, JioTV, JioSecurity, JioNews, and JioCloud. On the other hand, BSNL offers its Rs 2,399 plan for 425 days which is 60 days more than what users get with the long-term 3GB daily data plan from Jio. This also means that users get way more data with this plan is 1,275GB of data in total. Users also get a free OTT benefit of Eros Now too. BSNL is also giving the users an option of changing the caller tune. One other difference that you should note is the internet speed that the user gets after the fair-usage-policy (FUP) data is over. BSNL allows users to continue consuming the internet at 80 Kbps once the FUP data is consumed. At the same, Jio only allows users to consume the internet at 64 Kbps after the FUP data is over. These are big differences between the two plans. There's no question that BSNL's plan is way superior to what Jio is offering in the same category. Note that Airtel and Vodafone don't provide such a plan to the users in the first place. If only BSNL had a 4G network to back its plan, it would have been unstoppable. There are more plans offered by the telco that you can check out by going to its website.
