5G in India Will Only be Successful If This Happens

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 12:38 PM PDT

5G in India 5G networks aren't just a game of purchasing and deploying a ton of high-frequency spectrum for the telcos. There is a lot more to it, and all of it needs to happen for ensuring that 5G networks see success in India. First of all, the telcos will need to invest a lot in the ground-level infrastructure. This will include fiberisation, installing more towers and building micro-sites so that high-frequency networks can be delivered seamlessly. Then comes the spectrum into the picture. But it isn't that simple. Even the spectrum needs to be availed to the telcos at an affordable price. If it is too expensive, the telcos will either ignore it, or the services for the end consumers will eat away their pockets.

5G in India Only Possible If Telcos Share Infra Costs

Since fiberisation and other investments for the telcos will take a lot of money and time, the telcos can share infra costs and resolve their issues faster than ever. Specially telcos such as Vodafone Idea will only be able to afford such investments when it can share infra costs with other telcos, including Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio. In fact, the government has recently amended the license conditions, and now the telcos can share core network elements with each other. These new rules will allow the operators in coming out with new services at record times and also save them a lot of costs for setting up the infrastructure. It is also beneficial for the sector and the country in the long run. The faster the 5G networks will be rolled out in India; the faster India can leap ahead of other nations and become a digital country. 5G in India will only be successful if the sector and the government make a lot of wise decisions in the coming days. The installation of street furniture is also crucial. The 5G spectrum auctions are expected to take place in the first quarter of 2022, which isn't too far away now.

Android Auto Upgrades User Experience for Car Travellers

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 10:01 AM PDT

Android Auto Google has rolled out an update to Android Auto, which brings in new features and capabilities to the car infotainment screen. Notably, the update will let you play games directly from the display of your infotainment system while it is parked. These games will be powered by GameSnacks, an HTML5 platform developed by Google's Area 120. Previously, some of these games were available to people who enrolled in the beta program of Android Auto. One notable aspect is that these HTML5-based games require an active internet connection to play games. Besides this, if you have a dual SIM Android smartphone, then you need to choose the specific SIM that you want to use to make calls via Android Auto. Also, this update will bring support to the work profile feature of Android, which lets you take a look at forthcoming work meetings as well as messages on the display of your car. This feature should be useful while you travel and have to attend calls or reply to messages.

New Dashboard For Google Assistant Driving Mode

Besides the Android Auto update, Google is also updating the driving mode feature on Google Assistant in Android smartphones. This update will provide access to the new driving mode dashboard as you connect your phone to the Bluetooth system of your car or when you say "Hey Google, let's drive". As per Google, the new driving mode will display you basic viewable and tappable cards available with a single tap. This mode will let you hear new messages that you receive when you voice out "Hey Google, turn on auto-read". Also, you can respond to any message with your voice commands. The company will roll out the updated driving mode dashboard in the coming weeks for Android smartphones in English (Canada, Australia, US, Ireland, Singapore, India, and the UK), French, Italian, German, and Spanish (Spain and Mexico). In the US, Google is in plans to launch payment options on Android Auto. With this new feature, users will be able to pay for fuel through the car's infotainment screen through Google Pay. Initially, it will be available at more than 32,500 gas stations.

Apple MacBook Pro With Enhanced Display Resolution to Arrive Later This Year

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 07:01 AM PDT

Apple MacBook Pro Earlier this week, Apple released the seventh beta version of macOS Monterey. This iteration of the operating system was announced at the WWDC 2021. This iteration of the OS was expected to be available later this year alongside the M1X Macs that are rumoured for long. Now, an interesting development has been spotted via an internal system code, which shows that there could be support for two new Retina display resolutions. Perhaps, this could be from the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. As cited by MacRumors, the latest beta version of the macOS Monterey operating system adds mentions of a couple of new display resolutions in the internal system code. These files contain a list of resolutions that are supported and are shown within the Graphics/Displays menu within the System Information app.

Apple MacBook Pro With Improved Resolutions

The internal system code supports two resolutions – 3024 x 1964 pixels and 3456 x 2234 pixels. As of now, there is no Mac with an in-built Retina display that is based on these above-mentioned resolutions. On the comparison front, the 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution while the existing 16-inch MacBook Pro model packs a resolution of 3072 x 1920 pixels. These might assume that the new resolutions might be aimed at new MacBook models as these are relatively higher than that of their previous generation models. These could be nearly close to 4K resolution that could be used by an iMac or external monitor. With a higher resolution, the 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro could be an expected upgrade as there could be a larger screen. On the other hand, the 16-inch Apple MacBook Pro model is believed to get a better display in the upcoming version. The new screen resolutions should let the screen run at the native 2x Retina resolution. Notably, the current MacBook displays could be on a scaled resolution to minimise the size of the interface elements. From these numbers, the pixel density per inch on the Apple MacBook Pro models could be increased from 227 ppi to 257 ppi. As per the existing reports, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro are rumoured to be unveiled later this year with a new design, M1X chip and improved graphics. Also, it is speculated to feature additional ports as compared to previous models.

COAI Happy With Recent Amendments In License Conditions

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 04:00 AM PDT

COAI The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has expressed its happiness on the recent amendments introduced in license conditions which will now allow the telcos to actively share infrastructure with each other. This will allow the telecom operators to save high costs and also roll out services much faster. For the unaware, COAI is an industry body that represents telcos, including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea. COAI said that these amendments were long-awaited, and since they are here, they will benefit the industry a lot.

At Present Telcos Were Only Allowed to Share Limited Network Elements

COAI said that at present, telcos were only allowed to share limited network elements, which included things such as feeder cable, antenna, transmissions systems, and Node B. But now, the telcos will also be able to share core network elements such as MSC, HLR, IN etc. This will be of major help to the telcos because it will reduce the cost of network rollouts and also facilitate faster rollout. Back in April, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had amended the unified access service license (UASL) rules which widened the scope of sharing active infrastructure by the telcos. This move will result in a boost to the public Wi-Fi services and will also drive broadband penetration in the country. The telecom sector has been getting huge help from the government recently. On September 15, 2021, the telecom industry was provided with a relief package that would now ensure the survival of Vodafone Idea in the long run. The amendments announced now will change the game for the telcos when it comes to 5G. With sharing infra costs, telcos will be able to rollout 5G services faster and at much more feasible costs. Even with huge amounts of spectrum, if the telcos don't invest in ground-level infrastructure, it will mean that 5G in India won't be successful.

Fibre Broadband Is Different from Traditional Connection, What to Know

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 02:47 AM PDT

Fibre Broadband Broadband connections are an integral part of today's fast-paced world. The traditional broadband connections make use of copper phone lines to transact information. On the other hand, the latest technology in this segment uses fibre optic cables that traverse much longer distances despite comprising security as these cables are more reliable than copper at a relatively cheaper cost. Also, fibre optic cables are easier to scale than copper cables. Let's take a look at how fibre broadband and traditional connections are different from one another.

Fibre Broadband vs Traditional Broadband

Talking about the differences, the fibre broadband connections have more advantages than traditional broadband. These differences are detailed below. High-speed: The fibre broadband connections use high-speed fibre optic cables in order to deliver colossal data sets through larger distances. Also, it makes collaboration easier and faster. It offers data speeds of up to 40 Gbps with balanced download and upload bandwidth, enhanced productivity, customer communication, collaboration, and browsing as compared to traditional ADSL technology. High bandwidth: If you are looking for higher bandwidth for personal or business use, then you should invest in fibre broadband. Traditional broadband connections with copper wire infrastructure to transmit data were used for voice call transmission and do not require higher bandwidth. The development of internet technology brings the necessity to transmit data at high speeds over long distances. These could be resolved with fibre optic cables. Notably, fibre optic cables were designed for long-range networks. Some fibre types can transmit data up to 25 miles. High reliability: Fibre broadband provides consistent performance as there is a dedicated line to the users. Eventually, there is no delay in data processing and latency. ADSL broadband connections use a shared cable wire between users that can result in higher downtime and slower data transfer. High productivity: Fibre broadband connections provide a faster download or upload speed, thereby letting users to enjoy uninterrupted audio or video conferencing, browsing and streaming irrespective of the number of devices that are plugged into the broadband connection. Cable size: The internet speed is correlated with the right of the cable material that is used. The traditional broadband connection makes use of a copper cable to transfer data and copper is heavier than fibre, so it will reduce the speed. Copper wires consume large storage space while the fibre optic cables that are micro-thin can be stored in half the space of copper. Cost: It is expensive to set up a fibre broadband connection than the traditional ADSL connection. However, the cost of ownership over a longer time frame is lower as it is more durable, cheaper and requires less hardware.

BSNL Overtakes Jio In Wireline Broadband Subscribers Addition In July 2021

Posted: 24 Sep 2021 12:16 AM PDT

BSNL Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has taken Reliance Jio's throne when it comes to adding wireline broadband subscribers in the month of July 2021. For the unaware, as per the monthly data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for June 2021, Reliance Jio had added the most number of wireline broadband subscribers in India. But in the month of July 2021, Jio's throne was overtaken by BSNL, which is a very positive sign for the telco. BSNL's Bharat Fibre service is one of the best in India and offers users broadband plans at a very competitive price.

BSNL Added 0.50 Million Wireline Broadband Subscribers

BSNL added 5,06,674 subscribers (0.50 million) in the month of July 2021. The second position was taken by Jio, which added 2,59,975 subscribers (0.25 million) in the same month. Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea added 1,25,640 (0.12 million) and 11,340 (0.011 million) subscribers in July 2021. Note that we are talking about the wireline broadband subscribers and not the wireless subscribers. This is a positive sign for BSNL since it is showing its market standing in India when it comes to offering broadband services. Even though BSNL doesn't offer the most amount of over-the-top (OTT) benefits and other additional benefits, the fact that it has added the most number of wireline subscribers in the month of July 2021 is a great sign. BSNL's Bharat Fibre plans start at a monthly price of Rs 449 and offer speeds up to 30 Mbps. The internet service provider (ISP) offers plans with up to 300 Mbps internet speeds that also come with a free over-the-top (OTT) subscription of Disney+ Hotstar Premium. In comparison to July 2021, BSNL had lost 1,93,177 (0.19 million) subscribers in the month of June 2021. So this is a great comeback from BSNL, and the telco would certainly want the momentum to be its way only. It is interesting to see BSNL overtaking Jio so comfortably.

Bharti Airtel Stock Touches Lifetime High of Rs 752.60 Friday Morning

Posted: 23 Sep 2021 11:32 PM PDT

BSNL Bharti Airtel, the second-largest telecom operator, has seen its stock or share price touch a lifetime high on Friday morning. This is good news for the investors of the company since the telco's stock has been performing very strongly for the last few weeks. At the time of writing, Airtel's stock price is Rs 749, which is 3.05% in the green. The telco's stock touched a high of Rs 752.60 in the early trading session on Friday.

Telecom Stocks Performing Well on Friday

At the same time, even Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), the parent company of Reliance Jio, saw its stock price touching a lifetime high on Friday. RIL's stock price hit a high of Rs 4,505.45 in the early trading session on Friday. At the time of writing, RIL is trading for Rs 2,491.10, which is 0.05% in the green. Even Vodafone Idea (Vi), at the time of writing, is trading at Rs 11.30, which is 7.11% on the green. It is strange to see Vi's stock price going up after the monthly results that came in yesterday. However, the telco must have benefitted from BSE's Sensex crossing 60,000 points on Friday morning. On Friday morning, all the telecom stocks are in the green, and two of them have even hit their lifetime high mark. This is a positive note for the new investors that are trying to come into the market. As per the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), Reliance Jio added the most number of subscribers in the month of July 2021, followed by Bharti Airtel. Both Vodafone Idea and Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) lost subscribers in the same month. The relief package and the nearby 5G era is going to help the stock prices of the telcos more in the near future. The only telco that's in a confusing fix at the moment is BSNL which doesn't know when it will be able to come out with live 4G networks.

Vodafone Idea Top Operator of Choice for Users in Mumbai

Posted: 23 Sep 2021 10:35 PM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea (Vi) has seen exceptional performance in the Mumbai circle. Mumbai is one of the biggest markets in India because of the population it has. According to a release from the company citing TRAI (Telecom Regulatory Authority of India) data, every 4 out of 5 new mobile subscribers in Mumbai chose Vodafone Idea (Vi), as their preferred telecom network. This is basis of the effective new customers for the period February to June 2021.

Vodafone Idea (Vi) Recently Deployed Additional Spectrum in Mumbai

For the unaware, Vodafone Idea (Vi) recently deployed an additional spectrum in the Mumbai circle. The telco deployed 5 MHz of 900 MHz spectrum along with 5 MHz of 2100 MHz spectrum. This will help the telco in increasing both the coverage of its network and the capacity to ensure faster speeds for each user in the circle. In Mumbai, Vodafone Idea (Vi) holds the largest quantum of spectrum across different bands including 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2300 MHz, and 2500 MHz bands. The additional spectrum deployment in the 900 MHz bands will help the telco in ensuring that there is better indoor coverage for the users. Further, the additional spectrum deployment in the 2100 MHz band will ensure that users get great internet speeds wherever they are and also reduce network congestions. Clearly, with the response that it has seen, Vodafone Idea will treat Mumbai as one of its top priority circles. If the telco can deliver the same network experience in other parts of the country, it will definitely put it on the road to be the leading operator. It is interesting to see Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel missing out on the opportunity to claim their power in the Mumbai circle which is one of the biggest, but with 5G on the way, things might change a little. Vi would be on edge to keep the stats this way and with the relief package's backing, it will be interesting to see how things pan out.

5G, 4G Spectrum Bands Might Get a Price Revision Soon

Posted: 23 Sep 2021 09:09 PM PDT

5G One of the biggest issues in making 5G a faster reality for India is the spectrum pricing of the airwaves. The 5G airwaves are priced very much in the premium range as per the telcos. The telecom operators have made it clear that if they have to overpay for the 5G spectrum, they will ignore spending any money in the spectrum auctions. Looking at this, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has sent a reference to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), seeking fresh base prices of the different 5G and 4G spectrum bands. For 5G, operators are most likely to purchase the airwaves in the 3.3 – 3.6 GHz bands, 700 MHz band, and mmWave bands such as 26 GHz and 28 GHz. Further, the DoT has also asked the TRAI to consider a fresh base price for the 4G bands, which includes airwaves in the 800 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz and 2300 MHz bands.

When Will 5G Spectrum Auctions Take Place?

The 5G spectrum auctions are expected to take place between January – March 2022. According to some earlier reports, the government is most likely to schedule it for February 2022. As per ET Telecom, the DoT has asked TRAI for fresh base prices for different spectrum bands. The reason why this is a good move is not just because it will allow the telcos to roll out 5G services at feasible costs, but also because it reduces the burden off their shoulders. Most of the debt that the telecom industry has today is related to the spectrum. Thus, the telcos' wouldn't want to overpay for the spectrum they are purchasing from the auction. Bharti Airtel has made it clear that if the 700 MHz spectrum band is not priced rightly along with the other 5G airwaves, it will go ahead with rolling out 5G services with the help of 4G spectrum and Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology.

Excitel Offers Better Same Priced Plan than JioFiber

Posted: 23 Sep 2021 07:21 PM PDT

Excitel Excitel is one of the fastest-growing broadband internet service providers (ISPs) in India. The ISP has been expanding its business in multiple new cities of the country and plans to reach more and more tier-2 and tier-3 cities. At the same time, there is JioFiber, one of the largest ISPs in India, which is almost present everywhere. One thing that's common between Excitel and JioFiber is that both offer affordable broadband plans to the customers. There's one plan that both the companies offer to their customers, but Excitel's plan is much better. Here's what you should know about it.

Excitel Rs 699 Broadband Plan

Excitel offers its Rs 699 plan with 100 Mbps speed and truly unlimited data. The price mentioned here is exclusive of taxes. Further, there are no installation charges taken by the company, and users get ONU devices against a security deposit of Rs 2,000. What's great about this plan is that users can consume as much data as they want. There is no fair-usage-policy (FUP) limit restricting them to use high-speed data until a particular point. Further, the longer validity the users go for, the cheaper plan becomes. From Rs 699 per month, the price of the plan drops to Rs 399 per month if the users go for a yearly connection. Let's take a look at what Jio is providing for the same.

JioFiber Rs 699 Broadband Plan

JioFiber offers the same speed plan to the users for Rs 699. Even here, the taxes are not included. JioFiber restricts the user at 3.3TB data consumption in a month. But there's a free voice calling connection offered which is not a big deal, to be honest. There are no over-the-top (OTT) benefits offered with this plan, not even the Jio applications. It has a validity of 30 days, like Excitel's plan. JioFiber doesn't offer anything else with its Rs 699 plan. So the 100 Mbps plan from the ISP is as cheap as Excitel's plan, but it looks a little bland. With Excitel's plan, users at least get truly unlimited data. Further, JioFiber's long-term plans aren't that big of an advantage as compared to Excitel's long-term plans. The 12 months 100 Mbps plan from Excitel will bring the monthly price down by Rs 300, which means savings of Rs 3,600 at the time of purchase. All things considered, Excitel's 100 Mbps plan, which is priced the same as JioFiber's 100 Mbps plan, is a better option when the price to benefits ratio is concerned.
