Vodafone Idea Working on a New Business Strategy

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 08:02 AM PDT

Vodafone Idea Vodafone Idea, the third-largest telecom operator in the country, is working on a new business strategy. The new strategy will be finalised once the government comes out with the exact guidelines. The decision to go for a new business strategy was taken after the relief package for the sector was announced. The telco is also working with the other stakeholders for funding requirements. Himanshu Kapania, Non-Executive Chairman of Vodafone Idea (Vi), told ET Telecom that once the exact guidelines are released from the government, the management will complete its new business plan and then will come back to the board for the exact financial requirement of the company. Kapania confirmed that Vodafone Idea is also talking with the other stakeholders, and once the company has received a confirmation from the board, it will go to the stakeholders with its funding requirements.

Kapania Says Relief Package Shows Government's Intent

Kapania told the publication that the government's intent of keeping the environment a three market player is clear from the relief package. The non-exec chairman of the company further said that this relief package will provide short-term relief to Vi and will also influence the sector in a big way. Vodafone Idea got the short-term relief it needed from the government. Now all that Vi needs is tariff hikes. With tariff hikes, the telco will be all set for a graceful future. All of its cash flow issues will be resolved since there will be no debt to pay off, and the revenues will also increase. The relief package will certainly contribute to the company's growth and also bring 'ease of business’ to the sector. Even the 5G rollout in India will be positively impacted because of this. The telcos will now have more money to invest in the networks and purchase spectrum in the auctions. With 5G, their enterprise revenues are surely going to grow.

5G Smartphone Market Has Still Not Matured in India

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 05:10 AM PDT

5G Smartphones Indian market saw an influx of 5G smartphones in the first half of 2021. The second half is also going strong, with multiple new 5G smartphones launching in the affordable and mid-range category. But the market is yet to mature. In terms of 5G networks, India isn't even in the beginner’s stage since there are no live 5G networks. However, that doesn't mean you can't purchase a 5G smartphone. You can; it is just not in your best interest to do so now. Purchasing a 5G smartphone right now means you are over-paying for your device. How so? Let me explain.

5G Smartphones Are More Expensive Than they Need to be

The above statement is true for most of the 5G smartphones out in the market today. Sure, there are some which are really well priced, but they are still not what I would look for when going for a 5G device. If you simply compare two devices where one is 4G, and the other is 5G supportive and are also priced the same, you will notice that the 4G device has way better features and specifications as compared to the 5G one. Now, the question isn't whether you can or cannot buy a 5G smartphone! It is your money, your decision. But the real question is, why do you need to buy a 5G device? Is there any major use case of the 5G tech for direct consumers in India yet? No! Are there are any live 5G networks in India today? No! Will 5G networks reach your home by the end of next year? That's a big question mark, and no one can tell you whether it will. So why do you need a 5G smartphone today when you can buy a better 4G device for the same money? The thing is, smartphone makers face increased costs while manufacturing a 5G smartphone. This is because of the chipset's high cost. Thus, to keep the price of the device low, they downgrade the display and other components of the device so that consumers don't have to pay more than a certain limit. But the thing is, with most of the 5G smartphones today, you will be over-paying whether you like it or not. However, note that this doesn't necessarily apply to the flagship devices. Because for flagships, everyone is overpaying, and today, no flagship comes with a 4G SoC. So, if you are looking for a mid-range or an even more affordable 5G device, look if you have got a better 4G alternative for it. Chances are, you will find one better 4G device for the same price!

Reliance Jio Recent Offer Brings Misplaced Stock Reaction: BofA Securities

Posted: 29 Sep 2021 03:21 AM PDT

Reliance Jio Reliance Jio recently introduced a new offer giving 20% cashback to the users with three of its prepaid plans worth Rs 249, Rs 555, and Rs 599. BofA Securities, a global research firm, has said that Jio's recent offers have brought unwarranted stock reactions. For the unaware, the stock prices of Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) have seen a negative impact during the last few days. But the thing is, Reliance Jio's cashback offer is a part of the 'Maha Cashback Offer' at JioMart and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) is only looking to cross-sell here. The cashback offer will only be applicable on JioMart and other retail platforms. This won't affect the telco's average revenue per user (ARPU) since people are essentially paying the same amount, and the cashback is also not for recharges. Further, BofA said that 2GB daily data packs of the telco aren't that popular, which means the cashback offer isn't going to make much of an impact for the telco. BofA said that the cashback offer from Reliance Jio wouldn't impact the competitors in a major way since it is directly not related to the recharges.

BofA Securities Optimistic on Tariff Hikes

BofA said that it expects the tariff hikes to kick in around 3 to 6 months, with major ARPU flow coming through FY23 onwards. The research firm believes that the telcos need to go for 25% plus tariff hikes to ensure that the industry sustains. BofA further said that ARPU levels need to go high in the medium and long-term to ensure that Vodafone Idea (Vi) survives. This will benefit not only the telcos but also the government. The Indian government takes license fees and spectrum usage charges (SUC) from the telcos on the basis of their revenues. Thus, the higher the ARPU, the higher the revenues, and ultimately the government will earn more.
